Fantastic news. Tim Hudson is the very definition of professional and as perfect an example of what an Atlanta Braves player should be as you’re going to find. He’s a great player and an even better person, he’s a fantastic teammate and he makes everyone around him better.

Yes, Hudson is the ideal professional ballplayer that any team would love to have and I’m happy he is a Brave. I loved this guy when he was in Oakland and was so thrilled when the Braves got him.

That is what Huddy accepted to return to Atlanta this season. Injury or not, he could have earned at least 12+ million on the open market.

There are not a lot of athletes who accept less money to play for a team and city that they love (but many are Braves like Andruw and Chipper, to name a couple more).

I ain’t skeered of the Giants. The Braves offense had a better year in all major categories except for Slugging % and HRs. We scored more runs, had a higher OPS, and had the league’s best OBP.

Thus, I am looking at the playoffs one series at a time, and I like our chances, even if we have been struggling (by struggling I mean losing 5/6 to the Phils, not winning 7/9 against the Marlins, Nats, and Mets down the stretch…). We’ll worry about the Phillies later.

And the Giants won't be starting any bums or rookies....

…..so I like the Braves chances against Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez. Wait……Bumgarner……holy christ almighty, a ‘bum’ and a rookie.

But at least the soft-tossing lefty won’t be getting any starts.

But they’re kind of like alcohol, combined with a dimly-lit setting, and Huddy’s 17-9 record is kind of sexy.

King Felix – pitches in a smaller market, has not got a ton of press this year – Mariners lost 101 games

Does he deserve the award? You bet he does. Do the people who determine this know that? I’m not so sure about that part.

I've heard a lot of support for Felix...

on national sports talk radio, so I think he has a decent chance. Certainly a better chance than he would have even five years ago. The media is starting to come around on judging pitchers based on their W-L records.

We’ll have to see. If they give it to Sabathia over Felix, we’ll have our answer about the BBWA.

That's not going to happen

Even if they deny it to Hernandez, it will go to Price or someone with good stats beyond his W-L record. That ship has sailed.

I think we have to look beyond who wins.

Even if Felix loses a close vote, that shows progress. Yeah, it means he got screwed, but at least it will show things are progressing.

One other thing

I know they’re not supposed to think like this, but…Felix had a truly fabulous season last year but finished second to Greinke’s season for the ages. Anyone wavering over voting for a guy with a near .500 record might take that into account and have it push his vote over the line.

Look, I agree about Hernandez. He deserves the Cy Young award, but there is no need to cast aspersions on Hudson’s year in the process. People did that all year around here and I don’t think I’m the only one who tired of it long ago.

This topic seems to have struck a nerve, but I’m not quite sure where I trashed Huddy in the process, since I merely said that Hudson’s superficial 17-9 W-L statistic was attractive. But concerned that those with votes might see the superficial W-L of Hernandez as more than it is, and deny him of what he deserves.

But I’m not trashing Huddy’s season. 17-9 is the average girl with make-up on, but the 228IP, < 1 HR/9, and the 64%GB% are the girls I’d rather be staring at the rest of my life.

Fair enough, especially since you extended the metaphor. As I wrote, I got sick of people trying to tell us after every one of his starts this year that the sky was going to fall and that has made me a bit touchy.

As for Hernandez and the voters opening up to looking at stats in a deeper way, I really think that the fact that he leads all of baseball in Ks and ERA will carry a lot of weight with voters. If they were still stuck on wins, and wins alone, Greinke would have lost to Sabathia last year. Tarkus is right: this is a very different environment than even 5 years ago.

I’ve been having the discussion about Felix (and just Felix!), and as awesome of a season that Price has had, I really do believe it’s a two-horse race between Felix and CC. And that a Cy for Felix is a win for stats and progressive views, and a Cy for CC is a win for the old guard. It’s not so much that voters are so stuck on wins alone, because CC’s first Cy came with fewer wins than Josh Beckett, not to mention Tim Lincecum’s 17 wins beating out Brandon Webb’s 22 a few years back, but just the sheer contrast between CC’s sparkling 21-7 record compared to Felix’s kind of ugly 13-12.

I really hope that the progressive environment has changed enough to rightfully give it to Felix, but from the same organization of guys who denied Cal Jr. and Tony Gwynn unanimous HOF inductions citing threat to the “integrity” of the HOF and BBWAA, more obtuse decisions have occurred.

The reason I mentioned Price

Is that he may emerge as a “compromise” candidate. If someone can’t get past Hernandez’s superficially unimpressive W-L record, but also recognizes that Sabathia is a very good pitcher who walks out there with a huge advantage every night, David may benefit. Again, that’s a lame-o way to approach these things but I could see it working out that way.

It’s not like C.C. and Price had bad seasons under a “progressive” analysis (whatever that means).

Wins still count for something…at least until they start determining the standings and playoff spots by obscure stats.

he hasn’t been as good as Felix (or arguably Price or Liriano), but he’s been a damn horse for the Yankees, working long in games, every 5th day, pitching very well and giving his team (any team lineup be damned) a chance to win.

Now, I don’t think he’s pitched as well as Hernandez, and Price and Liriano have pitched as good as him if not better, but CC makes a strong case on his own.
