The Giants helped us (and them) avoid multiple playoff games, and now the Atlanta Braves will face the Giants on Thursday to open the POSTSEASON. Seems rather improbable after watching this Braves team for the past month. Our rotation is set with a Lowe, Hudson, Hanson top-three. Anything can happen now. Let's hope it's more Braves' wins than Braves' losses.
Moylan-led celebration here. On-field celebration with Bobby dancing, yes Bobby dancing, here. (thanks to Zach Klein).

General comment
Yeah, Buster Posey’s pretty good. But Jason Heyward is amazing.

YES YES YES!
WITH pur 3 man rotation maybe…just maybe we can do something
KINGSLYTUT - October 3, 2010
You know, this IS a wild card team.
With the guys we have now, we really don’t have any business being in the playoffs.
But for Bobby, we did it, and now we have a 1/8th chance at the World Series.

AND......
the Phillies will have to wait to “Stomp on our souls” (taken from TGP) hahaha gotta love a certain Mod over their

15ks - October 3, 2010
I just read the game recap at TGP...
…it’s really, really nasty. I can’t fathom the level of irreverence and viciousness TGP crowd has (or why there seems to be so much hatred of Cox and the Braves..) and I’ve never seen it in any of the places I’ve seen games. I’m not quick to stereotype but the Phillies fans seem to think winning four in a row earns you the right to be an unwavering asshole in all ways.
crimsonqueen9 - October 3, 2010
for your reasons
Please see the quote I use
ROBravo - October 3, 2010
maybe...
…but people aren’t just born that way. It’s nothing but gloating over any and everything bad for Atlanta and dismissal of any and all accomplishment. It’s obnoxious and childish. How are they going to act when their run ends? Genocidal meltdowns in Philly?
crimsonqueen9 - October 3, 2010
Start investing in suicide booths around the Philadelphia area. I forecast great financial returns.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Futurama style?
crimsonqueen9 - October 3, 2010
my bad...
I didnt want to turn this inot an anti Phillies thread. From what I’ve read all but one of their writers are pretty good (at TGP) and there is a mix between reasonalbe fans, and those with their heads up their ass (like every other SBN blog). Write what you want about them, but keep it in this blog, dont go trolling over there.
Shoert - October 3, 2010
trolling is for angry children
I was just taken aback by how much venom there was, especially considering the lack of bad history between the Braves and Phillies. I’d expect it between the Red Sox and Yanks. Oh well.
crimsonqueen9 - October 3, 2010
The recap wasn't nasty
Some of the comments were nasty though. They were started by some Braves fan who went over there commanding them to respect Bobby, so its not really surprising why they’d be pissed.
I’m just going to refrain from saying anything bad about any teams’ fans. I don’t think I believe in the “jinxing” thing, but I do believe in karma and people who troll on other boards or say nasty shit to other posters might get what’s coming to them.
E-Lizz - October 3, 2010
they sure were quick to throw out race
though when I made fun of the person who puked on the child and the off duty officer. Apparently they don’t accept that their fans, at least the ones that grab national attention, are douches.

There are a lot of young players on the team, maybe the whole winning thing will become contagious with them and they’ll carry it from year to year over the next decade, like the 90s Braves teams did.

It’s 4.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
You both seem to be missing out on the fact that the OP said year and not season.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
But it isn’t five years either. We made the postseason in 2005. We made it in 2010. We went four years without an appearance in between. If you really try to count those four seasons plus this one just because we have yet to play this year’s postseason, then it’s your own fault for failing at math.

-C
cthabeerman - October 3, 2010
You mean your Cornhuskers are LOSING Thursday night.
UMDBHIK - October 4, 2010
Not very likely.
I just don’t see it happening…unless Nebraska’s looking a week ahead to Texas.
I believe the Huskers have the ability to make any offense one-dimensional. The interesting part about that is that we’ll still force K-State to run the ball all game, which is their strength. It won’t be like Washington, where we forced a passing team to run all day as their NFL-bound QB went 4-for-20. Nonetheless, there are going to be third downs, and the Wildcats aren’t going to have an easy time with them.
I think Nebraska’s big advantage comes from the fact that the offense isn’t predicated on a single player’s success. K-State has one guy shouldering the load, and it’ll be easy for the Huskers to key in on him, whereas Nebraska has three players that average 75+ yards/game on the ground.
Both team’s passing attacks are pretty insignificant, but I don’t think either has shown much in that area on purpose. No need to give away the gameplan when you’re facing mediocre teams.
But, when Thursday has come to its end, I expect both of my teams will have won.
-C
cthabeerman - October 4, 2010
I expect NU to win big Thursday, because if you stop DT, there’s literally no one else to make plays. UCF kept him in check for the first half, so a real defense should be able to stop him all night.
Thankfully the game is in the Little Apple. Can’t wait to flip back and forth.

LEastCoastBears - October 3, 2010
When do playoff tickets go on sale?
TennesseeQuackAttack8 - October 3, 2010
I want to say they've already been on sale for a while.
At least, the radio has been announcing something about Braves postseason tickets for the last couple weeks.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
You’d be lucky if there are any left.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Ummm, it's atlanta.
Not saying this time things might be different since they haven’t been in the playoffs for a few years but I can think of at least a half dozen instances where I got great tickets (10 rows from the field up the third base line, a personal favorite location of mine) on the day of the game.
DogDaysofSummer - October 3, 2010

Hopefully the Reds will knock out the Phillies.
Stranger things have happened. Frankly, hitting the Phils in the NLCS would be terrifying.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
not really
Braves24 - October 3, 2010
If you aren't scared of 2x Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels
…then you haven’t been paying attention.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
I have but
if you didn’t see us almost beat Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels at the Phils with Beachy, Minor, and Hanson on the mound….then you haven’t been paying attention
Braves24 - October 3, 2010
"Almost" is relative
And I also saw us get embarrassed by dudes who probably won’t even be pitching for them the past couple days. I don’t see us getting past “almost” against any of the Big 3. I’d love to be wrong, but I just don’t see it.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
We don't even know if they phils will be in the NLCS so
this is kind of irrelevant
Braves24 - October 3, 2010
We don’t know if we are going to be in the NLCS.
frozendesert - October 3, 2010
I like to give us the benefit of the doubt :), but yea we don’t know
Braves24 - October 3, 2010
Well, that was the whole point of me hoping...
That they would not in fact make it. So here’s hoping the vagaries of chance and a short series make it a Braves-Reds NLCS. That’s a very winnable matchup for us.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
I think we can beat the Phils
but I already see that there is no point to continue this conversation
Braves24 - October 3, 2010
Apparently statistics show that the better playoff team (using season W-L) record only wins a series 60% of the time. And if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. If it’s not going to happen, it’s not going to happen. I’m not worried.
frozendesert - October 3, 2010
Research shows 60% it works every time.
PhuckthePhillies - October 3, 2010
Even setting aside records...
I think you have to look at the Phils’ starting pitching and shudder a little. They’re built for the playoffs.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
Hudson, Lowe, and Hanson? If they don’t have the lead when their starter is out of the game, they are very vunerable
Braves24 - October 3, 2010
Because Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine totally won like 8 world series for the braves.
The playoffs are anyone’s game because in any given series the pirates can sweep the yankees.
DogDaysofSummer - October 3, 2010
True.

Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 3, 2010
All on Conrad now.
The Braves just need to alter the scoreboard to flash “9th Inning” every time he comes up.
BulgingThyroidHiddenTestacle - October 3, 2010
All on the team now.
Everyone needs to rise up and cover everyone’s mistakes. Let’s make this postseason errorless!
Pavy848 - October 4, 2010
here's another
lingsched - October 3, 2010
Was Freeman having fun out there?
FreddieFreemanTime - October 3, 2010
he was crackin me up
they kept showing him on the video prior to the giants getting the last out and he looked like he was having a blast (was running in place in the clubhouse)
lingsched - October 3, 2010
I would've stuck Farnsworth in the face if I was you.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010
yeah
i was too overcome with joy to be angry at any of my less than favorite players
lingsched - October 3, 2010
lol
yeah. i mean, i probably would’ve kissed FUGA if he was still on the team.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010
Weird...
That the Phillies have 3 off days in the NLDS while all the other playoff teams including AL only have 2. Plus PHI and CIN are the closest cities the Division series.
braves077 - October 3, 2010
Since they got homefield advantage
they got to choose

what do you mean?
The best overall record in the MLB

Hudson's Soul Patch - October 3, 2010
I am really considering flying down Sunday
then just sleeping at the airport or something after the game and catching a flight back home monday.
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
If you're going, get them at Stub Hub
I got those for $24 each. (normally 40)
Hudson's Soul Patch - October 3, 2010
well the flight is of more concern to me than the game tickets right now.
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
...
Lennox - October 3, 2010
anyone got photos of the bravos watching the Padres-Giants game on the big screen?
MBL1 - October 3, 2010 via mobile
I was at the game today
It was electric! I was sitting front row in Left/Center field and giving Shane Douche-arino hell the entire game. I almost jinxed it when I yelled to Shane: “What you are looking at the scoreboard for? It’s 8-4 you bum!”. That was the bottom of the 7th. Needless to say, they went on to score 3 runs the next inning. Alls well that ends well I say.
I also want to comment on the stupidity of the staff at Turner Field. For some reason, I wasn’t allowed to bring in my 6ft tomahawk made from cardboard and a carpet roll. Apparently, it’s cool to bring it to the first game of the season but not the last one? Whatever…..Now on to SanFran Sissy to beat up on the Giants!
WOOHOO!
Sir Veza - October 3, 2010
awesome awesome awesome!!! i have missed this feeling!

Now that we've gotten here
let’s WIN IT ALL!

Fine, fine...
I guess I’ll actually watch baseball tonight.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010
when was the last time we face the giants in playoff?

Have we ever faced theM?
Since we switched divisions and all?

2002 Division Series
Time for some payback!!!
TonyAlmeyda - October 3, 2010
2002.
The Braves had a 2-1 lead but choked it. Livan Hernandez destroyed the Braves.
Tom Glavine was completely terrible. He got blasted in both starts. Had a lot to do with Atlanta not offering what he wanted in free agency.
AnEternalEnigma - October 4, 2010
Is the tribute to Bobby
from yesterday on the internet anyway? I didn’t get to see the entire thing.
Sir Veza - October 3, 2010
yes
its on mlb.com i think

Hmm...
That pennant don’t mean anything.
(By the way, anybody else here remember how we constantly belittled wild-card teams during the ‘90s and early part of the 2000s? I do. I guess the shoe’s on the other foot now.)
Thrashy Thrashy - October 3, 2010
Marlins won 2 WS with it
I can’t remember if one of Red Sox WS Championships was with the WC and the Rockies went all the way to the WC.
With Hinkse and MVP on our team, here we come!
Sir Veza - October 3, 2010
I think the 2004 Red Sox were a WC team
Kobe:The Legend - October 3, 2010
it means Postseason
and it looks pretty cool
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 3, 2010
2002 Angels
2002 Giants
both were WC team
joshant - October 3, 2010
I must say, it’s about damn time!!
I’m glad the first round starts Thursday. Three whole days of rest and preparation!!
I am PSYCHED!!
TonyAlmeyda - October 3, 2010
It’s basically like 4 days when you think about it. Half day today, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and then they don’t even play until 630 in San Fran. Jonny Venters won’t know what to do with himself. And hopefully EOF gets better by then.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010
When will they announce ROY??
Heyward vs Posey is gonna be epic
Hudson's Soul Patch - October 3, 2010
I think Posey has the edge
Kobe:The Legend - October 3, 2010
Not if the Braves beat the Giants.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 3, 2010
postseason is specifically excluded from the voting criteria
So it won’t matter one bit.
Jacob Peterson - October 3, 2010
they vote afterwards
and it’s close enough, that if Heyward dominates he’ll get it.
I’d settle for a Gold Glove for Heyward as a consolation though- something Posey will never get.
Broccoman - October 4, 2010
he can have it...
for his homer today if nothing else. But you could go with either him, Heyward, or Gabby Sanchez and could make a viable argument for either three.
Shoert - October 3, 2010
Gaby is out of the question because of not getting near the playoffs, Heyward and Posey, both were main keys in their respective teams for the playoffs.
Kobe:The Legend - October 3, 2010
Since when is ROY like the MVP? Playoffs should have nothing to do with it. Plenty of ROY’s have come from on playoff teams.
FitzFan - October 4, 2010
Gabby's Clothes-Line of Nyjer Morgan...
put him back in the running for ROY, in my opinion.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 3, 2010
The ROY doesn't even mean anything either...
Chris Coghlan won it, Tommy Hanson didn’t. Take your pick now.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010
Hanson would have won it, with more run support.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 3, 2010
it was just robbed but who cares?
I prefer a guy with less than 4.00 ERA than a guy with a pie-to-the-face injury
Kobe:The Legend - October 3, 2010
What does his injury in his 2nd season have to do with a damn thing?
Coghlan had a really nice year as well.
As for it not meaning anything, you can say that about any award. But it’s still looks nice on your resume.
FitzFan - October 4, 2010
Posey can have the ROY
Heyward will take the NLDS MVP
a hooter's baby - October 3, 2010
I lilke
Kobe:The Legend - October 3, 2010
You mean WS MVP.
MBL1 - October 3, 2010 via mobile
Yeah
Especially since they don’t give out MVPs for 5-game series.
Jacob Peterson - October 3, 2010
Posey will probably take it.
But Heyward will be Series MVP.
Pavy848 - October 4, 2010
lets do this shit!!
radamez85 - October 3, 2010
way ahead of you!!
Nice addition. GO BRAVES GO!!!
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 3, 2010
Fucking Rick Ankiel just has to ruin everything, doesn’t he?
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010
I'm ignoring that
Huddy and BMac are in it. Lets be thankful Melky didn’t make an appearance in this.
E-Lizz - October 3, 2010
can we please stop with all the negativity? anybody but McOut is ok. jeez. Ankiel at least has D. Nate has jack.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 3, 2010
I don't like your negativity about Nate.
E-Lizz - October 3, 2010
It’s not being negative. It’s being real. lol
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 4, 2010
Well, to be honest – Rick did get 2 walks and a hit in the final game.
He’s got to be psyched!

Kobe:The Legend - October 3, 2010
I just hope he doesn’t repeat what he did last time he was in the playoffs.

Pavy848 - October 4, 2010
Same here.
Though this is nothing new for me, as he’s been one of my favorite people on this blog since I joined. I always find his observations funny. Even if he is a Giants fan.

Game 4
If there is a game 4, you think Jurrjens pitches it on extended rest (and hopefully healthy) or Lowe on short rest?
Buffalo Braves - October 3, 2010
Lowe
Jtpdolphins2009 - October 3, 2010
Really depends on JJ's knee,
but I think you have to go with Lowe unless he craps the bed in game 1.
Jacob Peterson - October 3, 2010
Which won’t happen, don’t even mention it!!!!!!!!!!
PhuckthePhillies - October 3, 2010
If he does,
we’ll just score 12 runs to bail him out and win anyway.
Jacob Peterson - October 3, 2010
Now you’re talkin
PhuckthePhillies - October 3, 2010
I got my tickets for Sunday's game.
I’ve never been to a Braves playoff game before, so they’d better make me proud. Hanson vs. Sanchez is a pretty good matchup, too.
This is so sweet. This is the best I’ve felt after making the playoffs that I can recall. Bobby needs to go out in the playoffs, and they made it happen for him despite everything. As frustrating as this team has been at times, I love ’em to death. Even damn Ankiel.

TonyAlmeyda - October 3, 2010
I'm willing, if called upon.
I’m really freaking busy right now, but I can manage something if it sends my good juju the Braves’ way.

BREAKING NEWS:

Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010
Outstanding
-InsertWittyNameHere- - October 3, 2010
Maybe you'll be good in the clutch like Lowe
………oooooor we’ll get swept
Hudson's Soul Patch - October 3, 2010
I know this probably isn't necessary
Still, it annoys me to see them complain about how "Classless" we are, when in all honesty, they’ve clearly bothered us here more than we have them. Especially that little POS mvhsbball. He’s probably trolled here more than this whole board combined has theirs.
Sir Veza - October 3, 2010
Ok, that is a copy/paste fail
This is from TGP: “Still, it annoys me to see them complain about how "Classless" we are, when in all honesty, they’ve clearly bothered us here more than we have them. Especially that little POS mvhsbball. He’s probably trolled here more than this whole board combined has theirs.”

He's old
a hooter's baby - October 3, 2010
if he is too bad, I’ll just do my trick of firing up the atbat app on my phone and muting the tv.
I did that when MLB network showed the phillies games with their announcers.
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
Two things he isn’t:
Tim McCarver
Joe Morgan
I’m fine with him.
UMDBHIK - October 4, 2010
I actually have a really good feeling about the series.
the Giants are going to be home which is bad for us, but it may be bad for them too. they are going to be all kinds of jacked up playing in front of their crowd, which may not serve them well. You’ll have hitters all trying to be the man.
On our side, if our batters can show any kind of patience at the plate and make Lincecum work a bit and maybe even squeak out an early run, it will be a big blow to them.
remember, they have very little meaningful playoff experience on their roster – and basically none amongst their pitching staff. so if we can get them rattled even just a little bit, it will do a lot to help our cause.
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
So....
That happened
SuperNewb - October 3, 2010
When is post season roster announced?
Should be interesting. I would imagine KK, Minor, Martinez, and Saito will be left off. Does Beachy make it?
Which bench guy gets left off…Glaus?
Braves12 - October 3, 2010 via mobile
I think that means Beachy makes it.
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
The Braves would have went 6-1 in the regular season...
If not for two blown saves by Wagner. Remember the Renteria home run in the first week? But one of the two blown saves was thanks to some piss poor defense by Gonzo and Chipper.
AnEternalEnigma - October 4, 2010
Wait... went 6-1? What does that mean?
Against the Giants? Yes… I think that’s what you mean…?
SuperNewb - October 4, 2010
Yes.
AnEternalEnigma - October 4, 2010
Word...
Let’s win.
SuperNewb - October 4, 2010
the regular season record is kind of meaningless though
we played them so long ago that the two teams are vastly different now.
nuftjedi - October 4, 2010
I kind of don't want to be the person to say this... and I don't want anybody to think that I'm content with just the wild card...
But if we end up losing in the first round… even being swept… I think on some level I can be happy about this season, the smiles on Bobby’s face during all the post game videos did it for me. Again, I’m not saying I want to win the whole thing any less than anybody else, I’m not ready for it to end… but if it does, now we can always remember this:
SuperNewb - October 4, 2010
100%.
I’ve been saying since the Phillies stormed the NL East that I don’t care if the Braves get completely slaughtered in the first round. I would be thrilled if they just made it.
They made it.
Anything else is a bonus.
AnEternalEnigma - October 4, 2010
I completely agree.
All I wanted to do was to get in and at least have a chance. Would I love for us to take advantage of this chance and go all the way? Absolutely. But I can’t say I’d really be disappointed if we were, at worst, swept out in the first round. I’ve had so much fun this season and I’m just so elated that we proved ourselves to be among the best. I think the team is really happy with that too.
Sarahbeth - October 4, 2010
yeah. I haven’t seen Bobby look this happy in a long time. He usually plays it straight-faced, as is. But you can tell that all of this is very special for him.
I hope that, somehow, despite everything (injury, critics, Syndrome, etc), we win the whole damn thing.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - October 4, 2010
Thank you Bobby! You brought another great season to us. We'll miss you.
Enjoy your retirement, you earned it.
Pavy848 - October 4, 2010
How many hours of joy and entertainment did the Braves bring us this year? Even with the frustration and annoyance, I think it’s safe to say we all got our money’s worth on the team this year.
Anything else is just gravy.
UMDBHIK - October 4, 2010
Just got home....
a little while ago. I stayed for the concert, then watched the SF/SD game, and got to be part of the celebration. It was the most awesome thing, EVER. I made a few pics with my phone and I thought I had made some videos, but I apparently have not learned how to use my new phone very well yet. I’m old. Anyway, I’ve never seen Bobby look so happy. The entire team just seemed giddy, and as a result, so did all the fans. No one wanted to leave. I’m so glad I stayed, even though getting up for work in the morning is going to be bad.
I told you all it would be okay!
sddbaker - October 4, 2010
Wow
I’m really jealous. Unfortunately I had to
studygo on TC tonight so I couldn’t stay to watch the Padres game. Must have been pretty awesome. I’m hoping we get to have another party after 11 more wins.kauf67 - October 4, 2010
Yes, what an amazing game to see. Totally worth the two grand I spent for the weekend at the park. The only bummer was having to go straight to the airport after the game. I was dying to stay and watch the Dads choke. At least I heard the good news prior to takeoff; made the flight that much sweeter.
Hopefully I can make it back to Atlanta this weekend for the Sunday game.

Go Braves.
I hate (and love) the Giants. That’s all.

Tim Hudson = bad guy!
Apparently Braves pitchers love throwing at players even during tight games and tight playoff races.

Bobby being Bobby...
Bobby Cox on the last half-inning of the Giants-Padres game
"I was arguing with the umpire on every pitch. It would have been a 3,000-mile ejection."
Couldn’t have said it better…Go Braves!

I wish
Chipper and Prado would have made it to the postseason party, it would have been even more fun with them. Good luck Braves, someone keep those frigging bats awake, and find our lost set up pitchers.
