Talk about suspense, the entire season and this game alone all provided it through and through. The Braves fell behind early after a pinch-hit home run by John Mayberry Jr. Fortunately, the following inning the Braves offense came alive, scoring five runs. The Braves never looked back, despite giving up a few late runs due to an error by new third basemen Omar Infante.
Tim Hudson threw seven masterful innings, allowing just two hits in his outing. Both hits were two-run homers, but thankfully the offense was able to come together to back Hudson. Every starter had a hit, and each had an RBI aside from Brian McCann and Rick Ankiel. Omar Infante and Jason Heyward both had huge triples, and Derrek Lee blasted a solo shot to extend the lead to 6-2. Brooks Conrad had two RBI hits and played a solid second base.
Jonny Venters entered the eighth inning and allowed a single to Jimmy Rollins. The following play, Mike Sweeney hit a line drive that got through Infante's legs. The Braves then brought in Billy Wagner for the four out save. The first batter he faced, Wilson Valdez, battled through a tough at bat and singled in a run. Ben Fransisco followed with a two-RBI double, making the score 8-7.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Braves loaded the bases with one out only to see Alex Gonzalez ground into a 6-4-3 double play. At this point, I was admittedly nervous. Wagner did not look his best and the tables seemed to have turned. Thankfully, Wagner came through in the ninth in dominant fashion. Wagner struck out the side, including two nasty sliders to catch Shane Victorino and Brian Schneider looking.
The Padres and Giants are playing now. You know the deal, Padres lose and we're in, and if they win then there's a three game tie which means we play the loser of a one game playoff on Tuesday. This was a great victory in what was hopefully Bobby Cox's and Billy Wagner's last regular season game ever.

Wow, what a game. Now, Padres LOSE!
PhuckthePhillies - October 3, 2010
Yesss....
guess they will have to wait to “stomp on our souls” huh???
Shoert - October 3, 2010
It's amazing how it still comes down to one game
TurnerTheBurner - October 3, 2010
Just like everything with this team, seemingly,
this win was not easy. But they somehow came through. I am so glad that Bobby Cox’s career is not over yet.
Now, if we could just get the Giants to stop choking for 1 game. Only 1 game, though… I’m OK with them choking once the playoffs start.
Jacob Peterson - October 3, 2010
So glad they did it for Bobby and Chipper
Can we get a few more?

NCChopper - October 3, 2010
I feel like I'm gonna die of a heart attack.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010 via mobile
Hopefully you can at least survive until we win the WS.
Then you can die of happiness. :)
Jacob Peterson - October 3, 2010
are you guys going to put up a Padres thread?
or are we going to use this one?
kbertling353 - October 3, 2010
Me too
Wow I’m just glad Wags came back tough in the 9th
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010 via mobile
Pitching around Gonzalez with Denorfia on 3rd, 2 outs
kbertling353 - October 3, 2010
Oh, and guess who DIDN'T watch the game today?
You’re welcome Talking Chop.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010 via mobile
you sure you weren't watching the 7th and 8th inning?
kbertling353 - October 3, 2010
I swear on Jason Heyward’s health. All I’ve seen today were a couple highlights.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010 via mobile
Did you follow the score at all? I don’t know if I could handle not knowing what was going on.
Cayla - October 3, 2010
I got an update when it was 2-0, 7-2, and 8-7. That’s all,
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010 via mobile
1-0 Giants

if we win, everything will be fine. We won and now the giants are leading 1-0

WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010 via mobile
Yup
BigG1392 - October 3, 2010
When would it start?
Excuse my ignorance, I’ve just been trying to focus on a Braves win today without reading, watching or following anything.
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
Thursday
deewill23 - October 3, 2010
Thanks.
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
wouldnt it be better
if padres win and they have to play monday then tuesday against us. giving us rest and a advantage over both teams
jhunter723 - October 3, 2010
I am not rooting for a play-in game.
Let’s get in the playoffs, we don’t need a do or die situation. I don’t know about everyone else but I couldn’t handle it.
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
Yeah, having to play a playoff game would be MUCH better than having the Padres lose and getting into the playoffs outright. WAY BETTER!
BullManUGA - October 3, 2010
no, then we would play the Reds on Thursday with us being tired
one game playoff is going to be really nerve-wrecking
LEastCoastBears - October 3, 2010
Why does everyone think we would face the reds?
Under NO circumstances would we face the Reds in the first round.
DreamWithinADream - October 3, 2010
You could argue it would be better
IF you could guarantee we win the playoff game. But otherwise, you run the risk of us losing.
Cayla - October 3, 2010
We need rest
Just as much as anyone, remember Wags had to work a lot today as well.
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
reds
are much better game than sd or sf. ill tell you what. i can see a sweep against them
jhunter723 - October 3, 2010
No
I saw in The Great American Ballpark and watched them take 2 of 3 when Martin broke his finger. No team is easy, but once again I’m not rooting for a play-in.
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
SAT in The Great American Ballpark, excuse my spelling
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
Again
Under NO circumstances would we face the Reds in the first round.

EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Are the Braves going to celebrate if Giants win today?
deewill23 - October 3, 2010
yes
Jtpdolphins2009 - October 3, 2010
I imagine they will. The only bad thing is that we don’t get their celebration televised like it used to be back in the TBS days. :(
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Oh I highly doubt it.
UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010
It will probably be on Baseball Tonight or MLB Network if they do.
deewill23 - October 3, 2010
I would think so. I’m pretty sure Brooks said they were going to watch the game.
Cayla - October 3, 2010
I would think so. I think most of the team are watching the Padres-Giants game in the clubhouse.
LEastCoastBears - October 3, 2010

kbertling353 - October 3, 2010
Anyone have an update on JJ?
Hamstring good enough to go in the playoffs?
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
I do not want JJ pitching in the postseason.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
IF we get in and IF we make it past the NLDS, he’d have to pitch.
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010 via mobile
I disagree…..plenty of teams have run 3-man rotations all the way through.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
You think? If we had to, would you pitch JJ or Beachy?
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010 via mobile
Honestly?
Beachy…
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
BUT, he’d be on a short leash and a pitch count.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
A rookie w/ 3 starts who will be limited & who would have to go on short rest.
So now JJ is some crap pitcher who doesn’t warrant a start in postseason? So ridiculous.
FitzFan - October 3, 2010
How would Beachy be on short rest? That makes no sense at all.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Also, have you seen JJ pitch recently? He’s injured! What part of that do people not get?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
The Arizona Wildcats are 9th in the country?
Can I get a WTF?!

Kobe:The Legend - October 3, 2010

kbertling353 - October 3, 2010
And we’ll respond with DLowe, Huddy, and Cyborg. Not a bad retort.
UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010
Well, ya know what?
We’re gonna throw Lowe, Hudson and Hanson at them! BOOYAH!
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Yeah
It’s not like we’ve got a bad trio ourselves. It’s not going to be pitching that’s going to be the problem.
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
It’ll be a battle of anemic offenses.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
And I hate to even bring it up but....
Let’s just hope we don’t see the defense we saw this weekend
WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
If it turned into a battle of defenses, we’d lose.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
They have a pretty fat team, lots of Melky-esque bodies out there.
BenDuronio - October 3, 2010
Yet, somehow Kung-Fu Panda still makes pretty awesome defensive plays.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
You usually face pretty good pitching in the playoffs, IIRC. Might be wrong though…
Scott Coleman - October 3, 2010 via mobile
Braves celebration
On ESPN, they will have inside access to the Braves clubhouse if they clinch today. So that pretty much answers the celebration question. Everybody has pulled out chairs watching the Giants and Padres as well.
deewill23 - October 3, 2010
You mean ESPN is going to take a break from talking about NFL and Lebron?
UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010

I couldn't believe it when I was watching their Braves segment

BravesDawg16 - October 3, 2010
Most managers keep pitchers on short leashes in close games that matter.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Unless it’s Dusty Baker.
You mean you’ve already thrown 140 pitches 11 straight starts? You’re good for another 20-30 pitches, kid. In my day, pitchers used to throw a thousand pitches a day!

sepulcher - October 3, 2010
Casilla thought he had the comebacker, but somehow went past his glove?
Yakker - October 3, 2010
Error homage to the Bravos?
Affeldt coming in.
Yakker - October 3, 2010
It's Javier Lopez, not Affeldt.
AnEternalEnigma - October 3, 2010
My bad
Thanks. Saw Affeldt up earlier and thought he called for the lefty.
Yakker - October 3, 2010
Yeah, they sat down Affeldt quickly and got Lopez up.
AnEternalEnigma - October 3, 2010
Maybe get him back up to face AG
Yakker - October 3, 2010
Goddamn it.
Casilla took fielding advice from Brooks Conrad, apparently.
AnEternalEnigma - October 3, 2010
oh. fail
BigG1392 - October 3, 2010
bochy with another quick decision
Casilla-y, he’s been good, can’t take a pitcher out in that situation. you gotta let him work out of his troubles, build his confidence.

Pretty nice career for Ausmus.
Yakker - October 3, 2010

That isn’t right.
81 outs in the NLDS
108 in the NLCS
195 outs away from the World Series.
UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010
It's still a highly variable number...
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010

did the yankees end up a wild card team?
sepulcher - October 3, 2010

Yes
and the Rays won so celebrating wouldn’t look silly
kp.atl - October 3, 2010
Si.
Yakker - October 3, 2010
I can see it now...
Eckstein strikes out swinging, and the ballgame is over! The Giants are NL West champions1 And they are mobbing the closer on the field! Oh, now what’s this?? Every single player on the Giants’ 40-man roster has broken one or more limbs in a raucous celebratory dog pile! And oh, God, what’s happening now? The Phillies’ team plan has mysteriously been diverted here to San Francisco, and has just crashed into the field! What a terrible tragedy for the sport of baseball here tonight.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
That would only happen if it were the Braves.
kp.atl - October 3, 2010
I think we're due for a massive stroke of good luck.
Hell, if they just take out Rollins and Howard and maybe the Roys, I’ll be satisfied.
SS451 - October 3, 2010
This just in:
In a freak accident, Jimmy Rollins went all Huzzah and exploded taking out Howard and the Roys!
kp.atl - October 3, 2010
2007 was a shitty year in the NL. The wins leader was 90. Dang.

UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010

Burger Cake. Why choose?
Yakker - October 3, 2010
is that burger-flavored cake or cake-shaped burger?
kjrocker - October 3, 2010
Both.
UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010
J-Hey was just interviewed on baseball tonight....
Talked about wanting to get Bobby into the playoffs etc. Said he is in the clubhouse with the rest of the team watching the Giants/Padres game.
letsgobravos - October 3, 2010
Is that coverage going to be on ESPN/Baseball Tonight? Or will it be on ESPN2/etc?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
*of the team celebration, pending a Giants victory
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
guessing ESPN
looks like ESPN2’s going for the “alternate” fans, with like 3 hours straight of pool and MLS soccer
kjrocker - October 3, 2010

UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010

Jtpdolphins2009 - October 3, 2010
This is how it's going to be in the playoffs. Get prepared for it now.
AnEternalEnigma - October 3, 2010
If it means more Giants runs, I’m all for it.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
im watching the yahoo sports update, I swear it hasn't changed but one time in 10 minutes...
Allen Lawson - October 3, 2010
Because all Thatcher did was throw to first over and over
Yakker - October 3, 2010
Is it wrong that a little part of me is rooting for the Pads to win this game in 14 innings and come back tomorrow against Lincecum?
Yakker - October 3, 2010
yes bec ause if the Padres win, we still have to play on Tuesday to win the wildcard
Jtpdolphins2009 - October 3, 2010
Yeah, but if SD wins at home tomorrow, we play a one-gamer against SF (Bumgarner). Win that and we get to face Garland, Stauffer, etc.
Pads starters = yum, tasty.
Yakker - October 3, 2010
well except that our hopes rest on a 1-game playoff
kjrocker - October 3, 2010
Yes. Yes, it is.
TheLetter2 - October 3, 2010
LOL. Sorry. I did say it was just a little part of me rooting for it. I’m definitely at least 85% for the Gints.
Yakker - October 3, 2010
Yes.
I don’t want the Braves playing anything involving a one game elimination.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
YES!
Sean N - October 3, 2010
Far from a colts fan but that was a terrible penalty call
with the personal foul on lacey. reciever wasnt even down yet
15ks - October 3, 2010
Gonzalez just needed to say, "GO GO GADGET, EXTEND!" there.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
I say win it now, no chances....Giants need 2 more runs and 6 more outs
Allen Lawson - October 3, 2010
*6 more runs.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Question:
Assuming the Padres lose, who will we play in the opening round of the playoffs?
GouldisGold - October 3, 2010
SF
Yakker - October 3, 2010
That's what I feared.
Their rotation is a postseason monster.
GouldisGold - October 3, 2010
Sigh....
Do try to keep up. It’s only been stated OVER 9000 TIMES!!!
…………..Giants.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
My apologies.
GouldisGold - October 3, 2010
giants
but didnt you say yesterday that we sucked and we’d miss the playoffs? so why concern yourself?
15ks - October 3, 2010
This.
I started to respond with something similar.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Well I’m sorry for stating my opinion. I’m glad we made the playoffs, make no mistake about it.

Jtpdolphins2009 - October 3, 2010
It’s nerve wracking, isn’t it?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
the heart of the Pads order coming up...if they go 1 2 3 I like the Giants chances of closing it out!
Allen Lawson - October 3, 2010
What if they don’t go 1-2-3, but still don’t score any runs?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
So much for my Crim Just paper getting written today.
UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010
The Giants are useless.
FitzFan - October 3, 2010

Gints win expectancy now at 88% per FG
Yakker - October 3, 2010
I hate those stops
they are a jinx waiting to happen
Jtpdolphins2009 - October 3, 2010
You can’t even trust win expectancy when it’s at 99.8%. That’s far from comforting.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Nice Velcro beard there.
UMDBHIK - October 3, 2010
And yet another pitching change
yawn
Yakker - October 3, 2010
bochy is ready to use his entire bullpen
but of course bobby only has venters….
kjrocker - October 3, 2010
Good news: In the event that Bochy runs out of pitchers, Bobby already had Venters on a plane headed there.

WNWDOTCOM - October 3, 2010
I don't know about you guys, but Im rooting for the Reds to beat the Phillies. I think we match up much better against the Reds.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
+1
yondaime4 - October 3, 2010
Well if they beat the Phillies, who we can't beat I don't see it being much better.
FitzFan - October 3, 2010
Naaaaa....
Braves can beat the Reds.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Then they can beat the Phillies. People acting like beating the Reds will be super easy or something. They can hit unlike the Braves lately.
FitzFan - October 3, 2010
The Braves hit well today. They’re inconsistent with their hitting, yes. But, anything can happen in a short series.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
We'll beat em when it matters
Yakker - October 3, 2010
I'm rooting for the Reds because I hate the Phillies
good matchup with us or not
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
ESPN = Douchbags
Allen Lawson - October 3, 2010
TBS thought they could get rid of us.
They thought wrong.
Tim Goad - October 3, 2010
The Phillies are not unbeatable....The Reds can do it!
Allen Lawson - October 3, 2010
Joey Votto needs to go beast mode and hit 2 HRs per game.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
I'm going to be a huge Reds fans when they play Philly. I can't stand Philly and their arrogant fans.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
yep yep
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
yeah.
in Philly with their offense they can beat up on any pitcher – including Halladay.
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
It's too bad the official scorer couldn't give Ls to all three Philly starters who pitched today
Yakker - October 3, 2010
I'm glad ESPN thinks we can't win since they are usually wrong....lol
Allen Lawson - October 3, 2010
ESPN has been talking about the Giants as the only team that has a chance against the Phillies
rubbles88 - October 3, 2010
Good. that will just make it sweeter once we beat the giants.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
I look forward to the Braves proving everyone wrong.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
Well
It won’t be easy. We’re gonna need McCann and Lee to step up and get some big hits with RISP if we want any chance at advancing.
BigG1392 - October 3, 2010
The playoffs are like a fresh start. Everyone is 0-0. forget about what hapened in the last month.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
WTF!?
They’re talking about how awesome the Phillies’ bench is. SERIOUSLY!?
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
of course they are.
espn’s coverage of any sport focuses solely on one team.
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
They’re confused—think the Phils played their B squad today. OMG, Utley, Polanco, Howards off the bench!!!
Yakker - October 3, 2010
ROFL
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
Not really.
The Phillies bench scored 5 runs late in the game. It’s not fluff.
AnEternalEnigma - October 3, 2010
You mean the 2-R bomb from Werth that scored Howard or the 3-R 8th that Rollins jumpstarted?
Yakker - October 3, 2010
Seriously...
Why do people seem to think the Phillies played a B squad today? They had their A+ lineup out at the start, and most of them stayed in all game.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
The last three outs included Greg Dobbs, who was DFA’d this year, as well as backup catcher Brian Schneider. Most of the Braves’ runs were scored off someone who won’t make the playoff roster (Baez) and someone who will be the long man (Blanton). This wasn’t a B-squad? Look at the box score. The Phillies used 8 pitchers in tune-up work. The lineup at the end of this game had Bocock, Sweeney, Valdez, Schneider, and Dobbs on the field.
The Phillies did start their A+ lineup. They did not keep them in the whole game, especially the pitchers, which were handled like spring training. The whole thing was handled as a tune-up, and the Braves still nearly lost, just as they actually did lose the last two games, which were handled similarly, but not as obviously as tune-ups.
Atlanta has a good team, and in a 5 game series, anything can happen. Let’s not kid ourselves, though. This was B-squad. It was “everybody plays”. It was spring training ball. As it turned out, though (as is often the case in baseball), the AAAA team on the field at the end still nearly won. Far from being a valedictory on a fabulous season, the Braves backed in to the playoffs and have all the same questions outstanding that they did the last two months of the season — key injuries, relief pitching that is looking frayed at the seams, and starting pitching that is regressing. All the teams have flaws at this stage, of course.
I acknowledge your valid point that the Phillies started their A team, but your statement that “most of them stayed in all game” is just preposterous and it is not borne out at all by the box score.

EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010

but we winning the WC means bad news for the Division Champ (Phillies)
LEastCoastBears - October 3, 2010
So who will start first, Hudson, Hanson, or Lowe ? I wouldnt be surprised if Lowe starts game 1 considering how good he's been lately.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
It’s going to be: Lowe, Hudson, Hanson, most likely.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
I like this
rubbles88 - October 3, 2010
Sounds good to me. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of low scoring games.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
Sounds like that favors the Braves, then. They do much better in low scoring games…..even if they’re the ones trailing, it’s much easier to pull of the dramatic 9th inning comeback.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010
it was already announced Lowe would go in Game 1
nuftjedi - October 3, 2010
So what does everyone think?
Lincecum v Lowe (thurs)
Cain v Hudson (fri)
Sanchez v Hanson (sun)
Look about right?
Yakker - October 3, 2010
Yep.
EricGreggWasPaidOff - October 3, 2010

I can honestly say that even if we lose against the giants I'm proud of the Braves for making the playoffs.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
I really like our chances against the Giants....They are very similar right now to us and we can win....We need run production and Defense...
Allen Lawson - October 3, 2010
I agree. Clutch hits and defense is going to be crucial. I'm not worried about our pitching.

I started watching the Braves in 2007
I may be new but I stuck with them through some pretty shitty years. My first postseason feels really good!

I started watching the Braves in 1989.

Hey
me too! I mean I was always a “fan” in that I lived in Atlanta, went to a few games a year, but most years I couldn’t name you the starting lineup + pitching, and really didn’t care about the season at all. 07 was the year I started watching every day.

That 1991 season for the Braves was so magical. I feel bad for any Braves fan who was too young to remember that year.
BravesFan2010 - October 3, 2010
Indeed – such a magical season. I was young, but fortunately, not TOO young to remember it (I remember the postseason with crystal clarity, not so much of the regular season).

I was 11 when St.Louis beat us in 1982. That was a lifetime till 1991 so many losses...It feels like 91 now...I really like this team, they dont quit..
