Atlanta Braves Wednesday Winter League Wrap

Cory Gearrin wasn't supposed to be in the Arizona Fall League, and opposing hitters are wishing he had never shown up.

For most baseball fans the season never really ends, and for some of the players that's almost a reality. In our never-ending effort to bring you the very best Atlanta Braves coverage on the interwebs, every Wednesday we're going to give you a recap on how the team's prospects are handling themselves in winter ball. Most of the winter leagues have started up in the past few weeks, so we'll get you caught up on how things are going so far.

The Braves have seven players positioned with the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League, and Tyler Pastornicky is off to the hottest start, hitting .462 with a .962 OPS and 2 RBI in 13 at bats. He's been playing second base instead of his natural shortstop, a move that may become permanent. Outfielder Cory Harrilchak has also started well, hitting .286 with a .762 OPS and 1 triple in 14 at bats. First baseman Freddie Freeman was off to a slow start, hitting just .125 with a .576 OPS, 1 double and 1 triple, but he injured his finger sliding into third on that triple and his AFL season may be finished. On the pitching side, Cory Gearrin, who was a last minute replacement for Brandon Beachy, has made the best first impression, tossing 3 scoreless innings over 2 apparances, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 3. In his lone appearance, Kyle Cofield allowed 1 run in 1 inning, and Michael Broadway has allowed 3 runs in 3 innings over 2 appearances. Erik Cordier has had a tough time in the desert, allowing 5 runs in 2.1 innings in his 1 start, walking 2 and striking out 3.

The Braves have four players with Mayos de Navojoa in the Mexican Winter League, or the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico if you want to be more accurate. Matt Young picked up where he left off in AAA, hitting .435 with a .958 OPS and 2 RBI in his first 23 at bats. Wes Timmons has contributed early as well, hitting .350 with a .809 OPS in 20 at bats. Jason Lowey, who was surprisingly good after joining Myrtle Beach late in the season, beginning the year with an independent league team, has tossed 2 scoreless innings in 2 apparances, striking out 3 while allowing 1 hit and 1 walk. In his lone start, Tim Gustafson allowed 3 runs over 4 innings, giving up 5 hits and walking 3 while striking out 1. Despite the contributions of these Braves farmhands, Navojoa has started out 0-6.

The Braves have 3 players playing for different teams in the Venezuelan Winter League, which is called Liga Venezuela Beisbol Profesional down there. Steven Marek hasn't allowed a run in 3.1 innings over 3 appearances for Cardenales de Lara, keeping the batters hitless while allowing 3 walks and striking out 2. Infielder Luis Bolivar has just 1 hit in 11 at bats for Auilas de Zulia and catcher Jesus Sucre has gone hitless in 2 at bats for Leones del Caracas.

Great to see Pastornicky hitting so well...

and you gotta love how quickly the Braves’ Front Office addresses the weak spots in our minor league system. A year ago we were basically bare at 2nd, SS and 3rd. A year later, we have two top-talents like Salcedo and Lipka and then TP who projects, at the worst, to be a super-utility guy. That’s pretty awesome.

Great work CB.

I’ve always been impressed at how they attack needs. Back in the early part of the 2000s there were no catching prospects whatsoever. In the span of a couple years they added Brian McCann, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Max Ramirez, Brayan Pena, and Clint Sammons, all of whom ended up in the Majors.

this

They have addressed our weak spots very quickly and also filled it with great talent at the same time

Young

He’s obviously fast, but how are his jumps in CF? Could he be a viable solution for 2011?

He’s a very good outfielder. He really can run down a ball and he makes good reads from the time the ball is hit. His arm is very weak so that’s a bit of a detriment. Honestly, he’s better in left but more than capable in center.

I don’t think he’s a viable solution for 2011 because the Braves seem to have no interest in playing him in the Majors. If they did he would have come up at some point this year.

I heard about Fredi talking on a radio show that he had watched a lot of our Minor Leaguers this summer. I wonder if he would consider M Young differently than Cox. Also, with the talk of Infante getting a shot at possibly playing LF, would Wes Timmons be a Utility possibility?

Every time I was watching a Braves Minor League team play I was half expecting to run into Fredi. I don’t know if he’d view him differently. There’s also nothing saying that Cox didn’t like him, it could have been that he just didn’t like him enough to override some other people’s feelings about him.

I doubt Infante gets regular playing time, especially in left, making the question of Timmons as a utility player moot, but there’s not reason he couldn’t be a ML utility player.

Too bad

about Young. If he can play above-average CF (though the weak arm is a big problem, IMO), his decent BB rate makes him a cheap option in 2011. Perhaps as a 4th OF.

Pastornicky at 2B?...

I’d assumed he was being groomed to hopefully replace Gonzalez at SS after next year. But then maybe the plan becomes him at 2nd, allowing Prado to 3rd to replace Chipper. I think I like the first plan better, especially with Myke Jones seeming more like a 2B than SS, and Joe Leonard possibly ready to take 3B in 2012.

When I saw TP in the AFL a week or so ago, it didn’t look like he had the arm strength to play SS at this point. He is an excellent fielder though, excepting the arm.

I think if it’s between Jones and Pastornicky at SS, Jones is the better option.

And wow, Leonard ready in 2012? That would be moving mighty quick. You’re expecting him to tear through the minors in 2011? He’d basically have to have at least half a year of punishing AA in 2011 to even be considered a possibility to take over in 2012. I think that’s expecting way too much.

He is a college player, so advanced...

and yeah, if he starts next year in Myrtle (ala Milligan) and stays healthy and produces, I could see the team fast tracking him. Not saying he will progress that fast, but it’s a possibility considering his age and college experience. I’d have loved it if he got some winter ball to help speed that process along, but then maybe he’s getting a ton of work in instructs.

And really on Jones/Past? I’d read that Pastornicky was supposed to be a solid gloveman, and of course Jones had that huge error total which clouds my opinion.

As I’ve pointed out a lot, those errors come from getting to balls that other guys simply can’t. Jones is probably the best athlete in the system. I think he’d be better suited to 2B as well, but of the two he’s the more athletic, and thus the better option at SS.

Leonard broke his hand, so if he’s getting any work at instructs I’m guessing it’s pretty limited.

Sickels spoke highly of Salcedo’s tools. Is 2014 a possibility for him? Figuring A-/A+ in ’11, AA in ’12, AAA in ’14.

Sorry, AAA in ’13

He’s going to start back in Rome next year, so if he plays well to start out he could end up in Myrtle Beach to finish the year. I could see him coming up in late 2013 and being ready to be a Major Leaguer full time in 2014. Of course, it might take him a little longer. I think he’s an outstanding prospect.

Lynchburg

Not Myrtle… They’re ferocious Hillcats now lol

Thanks...

it’s gonna take a bit to remember that, as we’ve been Myrtle for so long.

This. Definitely need to change some stuff for my post tomorrow…

Salcedo

I’ve heard that he’s been play much, much better down in instructs. Look for a big season out of him next year.

Glad to hear that. I trust the Braves scouts, if they convinced the org to give Salcedo the biggest IFA signing bonus in org history, I figure the kid is pretty durn good.

The Braves were pleased with how he had performed during the season. I talked with Johnny Almaraz late in the year and he said they couldn’t have been happier with how Salcedo had done.

I saw him play once

He looked fluid in the field to me with a very strong arm but he’s not quite accurate yet. At the plate his swing is a little long and like many young players he can’t hit offspeed stuff.

Winter? Fall? What? it’s like 75 degrees in october.

Must be nice. It’s in the 50s here in VA.

It's nice

but I want some snow this year.

hmm so I guess TP will be taking over at 2B for us

Not that bad of a move considering the reports about his arm strength. Still leaves us without a SS for 2012

Myke Jones or Matt Lipka

There’s not much chance at all of Lipka being ready to play in the Majors in 2012.

Maybe draft a college guy who’s near major league ready, or just sign a veteran stopgap for a year.

Any kind of SS who would be ready to play in the Majors the year after he was drafted would be a top 5 pick.

How about those Giants?!

Nice work boys. That’s what I like to see.

Still got one more HUGE hurdle to go!
For the love of God, can Matt Young get some major league playing time.
he probably will

as a 4th 5th ofer now that melky is gone
