Could The Braves Announce Bobby Cox Replacement Thursday?

The Atlanta Braves will hold a farewell press conference for Bobby Cox on Wednesday at Turner Field, and salute their former manager one last time. According to David O'Brien of the AJC, "some believe" that the Braves could turn around on Thursday and hold a press conference to announce the hiring of their new manager, presumed to be Fredi Gonzalez. O'Brien notes that there are no playoff games on Thursday, so MLB would not frown on the Braves making a managerial announcement that day.

If indeed the agreement between the Braves and Gonzalez is already in place, as "some believe" it is, then it would make sense for the Braves to go ahead and make the hiring official, a move that would lend stability to an organization that prides itself on its stability and smooth managerial and coaching transitions.

Along those lines this would free up internal managerial candidates, Terry Pendleton, Eddie Perez, Brian Snitker, and David Brundage, to interview elsewhere without waiting around to learn the Braves final decision.

I’d love no more TP

I also like the hire too. The Marlins will regret this big time

Don’t get ahead of yourself. He’s the hands-down favorite, but it hasn’t been announced yet.

26 minutes

Time before DOB turned me into a jackass.

I hope the Braves hire Pendleton as manager.

Solely for the passionate hate posts that would pop up on TC.

On the bright side

We’d get a new hitting coach!

Hahahaha

Hahaha considering how angry I was before I read the second line of that

You’d be right.

I posted that video for ya

Its a fanshot.

I'm good with that

So long as Bobby Cox is ok with it.

Also, I find it hilarious that folks think that whoever the Braves hire would be “better than Bobby”. Whoever the Braves hire will be from the Bobby Cox school of managing.

Yes...

And no student has EVER been better than their teacher

…….?

Seriously. I very much want someone who can manage people/personalities the way the Bobby did to get the best out of everyone, I just hope the next guy manages his bullpen a little more wisely.

counting down the days til Pendleton quits

I guess Bobby Valentine turned us down?

will fredi

keep pendleton and mcdowell?

I would hope McDowell is staying…

Leo Mazzone for pitching coach
Keep McDowell!

If he has paid any attention to what our staff has done, he’ll keep McDowell.

Sure, why not?

As long as he keeps Chino.

Is there a rush? I wouldn’t mind us getting an agreement with Fredi, but we shouldn’t announce it until the World Series is over.

It’s been so set for so long, it almost already seemed silly not to acknowledge it long ago. Everyone knows what’s happening, it’s better to get it out of the way. It will be news for 1 day outside of Atlanta, and won’t bother anyone after that.

Plus, the sooner we do it, the sooner he can publicly get to work. I’m sure he’s already been talking with Wren about the future, but it’d be nice to let him actually get started officially.

It is not our job to protect the sanctity of the series, our job today is to start getting ready for next year. No use dilly dallying.

Phillip Wellman?

Just a thought… :-p

Only if it's in his contract

that he has to have a meltdown once per game. I think he really would be good though. Kinda wish we were hiring Eddie Perez over Fredi.

Fredi is gonna be the guy !

Fredi Gonzo has the insight of the organization as a whole, and really he did very nicely as a third base coach. If Gonzo is past over I would go with internal candidate and the only one would be Eddie Perez. T. P. is a bum and has no business manager a club, hell is even worth a damn as a hitting coach. T. P best year as a player came with the Cards and was a good MLB player but was never a Chipper Jones caliber 3B.

Are you suggesting that to be an excellent manager, one needs to have had a HOF caliber career as a player?

honestly, i'm not thrilled at all about gonzalez

this guy does what peeved us about bobby even more than bobby himself: questionable IBB’s, relying too much on “matchups” rather than statistics, taxing the pen, bunting when he shouldn’t… the list goes on. continuity should play a role in the decision but not if the opportunity cost is poor in-game decisions.

Honestly, there aren’t many managers that I’d trust at all to be any smarter about that stuff. I wish I’d paid more attention to his managing before

I’m happy just knowing he has had success, and mostly just happy that the long ago theory of TP for manager has passed.

I do hope that Roger stays at pitching coach, and I’d love to see Eddie move up to a bench coach role.

I think next year will be defined

more about weather or not we get some bats

I hear Fredi is the man

and indeed will be named manager on Thursday!

I believe Fredi got a bad deal being ousted from the Marlins. I’m not sure what to think about he being the next Braves manager, other than that it is no surprise.

I do think that Gonzalez is young enough to still change his managerial style and maybe he will eventually do less of the mistakes that Bobby used to do.
