Freddie Freeman will be the only Braves with Major League experience heading to the Arizona Fall League.
Today is the first day of play in the 2010 Arizona Fall League, baseball's premier winter league for top prospects to refine their game, and the Braves will send seven players out to Arizona to suit up for the Phoneix Desert Dogs, who will be managed by Yankee legend, and future Dodgers manager, Don Mattingly.
Freddie Freeman is Atlanta's best position prospect and the 21 year old first baseman played like it this season, garnering International League Rookie of the Year honors as he hit .319 with a .898 OPS, 35 doubles, 18 home runs, and 87 RBI for Gwinnett. He didn't fare as well in his first taste of the Majors, hitting just .167 with a .500 OPS in 24 September at bats, but all indications are that he will be Atlanta's opening day first baseman in 2011.
Tyler Pastornicky was acquired from the Blue Jays in the trade that sent Yunel Escobar north of the border just after the All-Star break. The 20 year old shortstop hit .258 with a .724 OPS and 24 stolen bases in 77 games for Single A Dunedin before the trade, and after coming to the Braves he was promoted to AA Mississippi where he hit .257 with a .699 OPS and 11 steals in 38 games. Pastornicky is a solid defender who needs to use his time in Arizona to refine his skills with the bat.
Cory Harrilchak was one of the more pleasant surprises of the 2010 season, as the 23 year old centerfielder was named a South Atlantic League All-Star after hitting .306 with a .773 OPS and 18 stolen bases in 60 games for Rome. After a promotion to High A Myrtle Beach, he hit .269 with a .735 OPS in 58 games. The lefty swinger is a plus defender and a solid hitter, but he needs to work on driving the ball more, slugging just .400 on the season.
Michael Broadway has slowly but steadily worked his was up the organizational ladder since being drafted out of high school as a 4th rounder in 2005. The 23 year old righty, who stands at an imposing 6'5", 225, started the year at AA Mississippi, where he had a 3.45 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 31.1 innings in relief, striking out 10.9 batters per 9 innings. He made his AAA debut in July and went on to pitch 22 innings with Gwinnett, compiling a 5.73 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. While in the AFL, Broadway needs to continue to refine his game and pitch in as many different late-inning situations as possible.
Kyle Cofield missed several months with a sore soulder, but the 23 year old, who is a member of Atlanta's 40 man roster, has shown a ton of promise, earning comparisons to John Smoltz. The righty, who stands at a massive 6'5", 230, had a 4.39 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP in 55.1 innings for Mississpi this year, but really shined late in the season when he moved to the bullpen, where he compiled a 1.84 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 14.2 innings over 8 appearances. He'll use the AFL to become better accustomed to working as a reliever.
Erik Cordier has missed nearly 4 full seasons to injuries in his career, including 2 Tommy John surgeries, but he's been healthy each of the last 2 seasons, and put up a solid year with Mississippi in 2010, with a 3.71 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP in 135.2 innings. The 6'4", 230 pound righty, who can get his fastball up into the mid-90s, also made 2 starts for Gwinnett, allowing 5 earned runs in 8 innings. Despite the fact that he's 24, Cordier is still somewhat inexperienced due to all the missed time and he'll look to pile on some innings in the AFL.
Cory Gearrin was a late addition to the Desert Dogs' roster, replacing pitcher Brandon Beachy, who found himself on Atlanta's playoff roster. The 24 year old sidearmer was a consistent force in Gwinnett's bullpen this season, leading the team with 52 appearances while earning a 3.36 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Gearrin likes to keep the ball down and get ground outs, which won't be an easy task in the thin Arizona air, but more than anything he needs to refine his control as he prepares to head into 2011 looking to earn a spot in Atlanta's bullpen.
Jamie Dismuke will also be with the Desert Dogs, serving as the team's hitting coach after serving in the same capacity for Gwinnett for the last 2 seasons. The 41 year old former first baseman played 9 seasons in the Minors with the Reds, Tigers, and Blue Jays organizations, hitting .278 with a .801 OPS. Gwinnett hit .263 with a .725 OPS as a team this season.

I've been so caught up with the Braves I forgot to get my tickets!
I was really hoping to see Beachy pitch, but at least Freeman will be there.

And I’ll be there tomorrow night, go Dogs!
king of games - October 12, 2010
I’ll definitely try to make a few games if I can make it work. I know of two other guys on TC who live in AZ so maybe we could do a little meet-up if it worked out for everyone.

That would be awsome. You can email me at goldenknight323@yahoo.com or AIM me at kingofgames323.

people still use AIM? I mean its still on my desktop but I didn’t think people still communicated that way.
bpk228480 - October 12, 2010
You don't have to lie...
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
Still have the Classic 5.9 version that auto signs on when I turn on my laptop.
bpk228480 - October 12, 2010
There’s still 2 or 3 people I talk to on there.
king of games - October 12, 2010
I really hope Pastornicky keeps progressing. We need him at shortstop.
Pavy848 - October 12, 2010
Interested
To see what this kid can do… I’m interested in seeing what Myke Jones can develop into as well, sea bass isn’t a long term option
HansonManCrush - October 12, 2010 via mobile
I think he was included...
in the Esco for precisely that, to be a long term option at SS.
Mr. Sanchez - October 12, 2010
He is not a long term option for SS
Braves24 - October 12, 2010
Depends on if or how quickly he finds his swing. His speed and defense are already there.
king of games - October 12, 2010
I think
The potential is there… Just bump up that .OBP francouer style (/sarcasm) and he’d be a good prototypical leadoff hitter… Light hitting SS with good speed and glove who can draw some walks… I like it
HansonManCrush - October 12, 2010 via mobile
Supid
Smart phone… Reply and spelling fail
HansonManCrush - October 12, 2010 via mobile
Yea his defense and speed are there. He needs to hit for power and pump up his walk rate a little bit. Maybe I said that too quickly, but I think he is going to be more of an utility player
Braves24 - October 12, 2010
I doubt he’ll ever hit for real power, which is fine if we can get some power out of the OF. Remember, Furcal never had 20 HR power.
king of games - October 12, 2010
He also averages around .280-.290 with at least 20 steals every year with decent pop.
Braves24 - October 12, 2010
exactly...
and his profile fits along with several other recent big league SSs. He’s not gonna be a Hanley Ramirez or yearly All Star type, but he has long term potential.
Mr. Sanchez - October 13, 2010
He’s got the tools but he has a very long way too go in developing doubles power and on base skills
jeg - October 12, 2010
Congrats!
Great season to honor Bobby…tip of the cap to the Braves! As a Phils fan, I look forward to next season’s division battle against 2 young, up and coming teams in the Braves and Marlins…should be interesting. I honestly used to hate the Braves when I was younger, but it seems like they have alot of likable players on their squad now and I have always enjoyed watching prospects grow into their potential. The NL East has the best young prospects of any division in baseball and next year should be fun. I had hoped you guys beat the Braves so that we could have the East showdown in the NLCS, but not to be….not to second guess, but I still can’t figure out why McCann called a slider on Freddie Sanchez when he obviously couldn’t catch up to Kimbral’s heater….or why Bobby took Kimbral out…that guy is better than Wagner right now…might have to draft him for my fantasy team next year. Good luck next season and if it doesn’t pain you too much, pull for the Phightins!
DirtyWaters - October 12, 2010
Giants....wow I can't type today
DirtyWaters - October 12, 2010
Pull for the Phightins?
I’d rather chew broken glass… Or shave my eyeballs, or do both at the same time, but thanks for the kind words
HansonManCrush - October 12, 2010 via mobile
How awsome would it be if Cliff Lee took out the Phills in the Series!
king of games - October 12, 2010
It would be sweet
Here’s to hoping someone’s able to shut them down
HansonManCrush - October 12, 2010 via mobile
Seriously. I can’t stand the idea of rooting for the Phillies. Last year, when they were playing the Yankees, the only team I’d want to root for less, I was rooting for snow to indefinitely postpone the whole series.
cbwilk - October 12, 2010
+1
Nathan Lowery - October 12, 2010
Good luck, can't root for you
but that profle pic is nice
a hooter's baby - October 12, 2010
Yea, thats never going to happen in my lifetime.
bpk228480 - October 12, 2010
I like the idea of Freeman getting more at bats, but I think they should let him rest and let him prepare himself for next season if he is going to start for the Braves.
Braves24 - October 12, 2010
Still five months until spring training; that leaves plenty of time for both work and rest.
joshmaurer - October 12, 2010
I’m still not sold on Freeman being our full time starting 1B next year. I’d like to have a veteran to split time with him to make sure he’s comfortable first. I would love to have Lee back one more year. Lee could start 3-4 times per week and Freeman could start 2-3 times. He just looked lost at the plate sometimes when he came up this year.
king of games - October 12, 2010
It will
Take Freeman a long time to adjust I think… He took half a year at AAA before he started rakin’
HansonManCrush - October 12, 2010 via mobile
Lee would be a pretty expensive platoon option. He’s still going to be somewhat sought after this offseason. If the plan really became to platoon Freddie a guy like Glaus, who wouldn’t cost much and could provide some upside, would be a more likely option. Though hopefully not Glaus cause I don’t think he has much of anything left in the tank.
cbwilk - October 12, 2010
Yeah, I’m hoping Lee just really likes it in Atlanta and other teams are afraid of his back issues. Not a lot on the FA market otherwise, maybe Wigginton, Nady or Berkman if he’s bought out. Wiggy might be too good to platoon, but he’s versatile enough to find ABs.
king of games - October 12, 2010
Maybe...
1B is the one position of which there is a wealth of talent available in the offseason. Here’s a quick look (and some of these may have changed…MLBTR will likely have a new article soon, but I’m just going off their 2011 free agent list).
In alphabetical order: Berkman, Branyan, Cantu, Dunn, Glaus, Hinske, Huff, Nick Johnson, Konerko, Adam LaRoche, D-Lee, Nady, Overbay, Pena, Sweeney, Wigginton.
A big veteran bunch there…16 players, more than enough for half the teams. And that’s not including possible A-Gonzalez/Fielder deals.
To be honest, I don’t know where Lee fits into that mix of players after his most recent season. Some of those players are club/mutual buyouts, some are Type B, etc., making them more or less valuable to prospective teams. D-Lee will likely carry an A tag, which should make him considerably less attractive to teams if we offer arbitration (not saying we should, because that’s where he’d be most expensive, realistically).
I could see him coming back at an extremely reduced rate, if he finds no other lucrative, contending takers. You’d have to figure he’d rather sign less for a contender than more for a non-contender at this stage in his career, especially considering he blocked the Angels and accepted the Braves trade this season.
Fangraphs put his value this season at $8M, which is sadly the price I think he’ll go for. If we could get him in the $4-6M range, I think it’s a luxury we can afford considering Freeman is so cheap.

cthabeerman - October 12, 2010
Seems to me that the Braves would want an RHB to platoon with Freeman, if that’s the plan, and many of the names you mentioned are LHBs. Mike Lowell is a FA RHB but who knows what he has left in the tank.
Yakker - October 12, 2010
He retired I think.
king of games - October 12, 2010
LOL
Well, there goes that idea. Not seeing a ton of interesting, cheap RHB FAs out there…
Yakker - October 12, 2010
It doesn’t matter if he’s right handed, he just has to be able to hit lefties.
king of games - October 12, 2010
Sure
But if he hits both righties and lefties, what exactly is Freeman going to be doing again?
Yakker - October 12, 2010
Starting a couple days a week and pinch hitting preferably.
king of games - October 12, 2010
Doesn't seem like a great use of resources
Yakker - October 12, 2010
I don’t think there’s any harm in bringing him along slowly, he’s not nearly as polished as Heyward was. I guess we could always platoon with Hinske, worst case.
king of games - October 12, 2010
You’re basing an awful lot on Freeman’s 24 at bats in September. He straight up murdered AAA. Check the stats, he’s in the top 10 in just about every category, top 3 in a bunch of them. The kid has nothing left to prove in the minors and there really isn’t any reason to bring him along slowly. If anything, based on his Minor League experience, he’s much more polished than Heyward.
cbwilk - October 12, 2010
Right
And running his clock to get him 10 MLB ABs per week seems like a waste to me.
Yakker - October 13, 2010
If he's up with the big club from here on out...
that “running his clock” won’t make a damn bit of difference in arb eligibility or free agency. This is assuming he’s already made his last non-rehab related minor league at bats, but considering the safety of that assumption, the extra 0.1-0.2 (if that, and since it was after September call ups it may be excluded) in service time doesn’t change a thing.
Mr. Sanchez - October 13, 2010
You’re right, I probably am overreacting, His swing was just really ugly sometimes in the Bigs. That being said, he has been a slow starter at every level thus far so he might be fine. I would still very much like some insurance in case he really isn’t ready yet.
king of games - October 13, 2010
RH 1Bs
aren’t as common. It’s a left-hander’s position by nature, although the focus on power and production at the plate from the 1B position has changed this in more recent times. While we would like a righty for our lineup, most teams won’t give two figs because whichever player they sign will be starting regardless.
This is one of the cases in which Lee would provide us extra value that wouldn’t necessarily be an advantage for other teams.
-C
cthabeerman - October 13, 2010
Payroll
Assuming we’ll go into 2011 with a payroll in the low $80s, we’re looking at a pretty tight squeeze. We’ve already got approx. $62M on the books, and that’s before the club option on Sea Bass and anything from Saito, Melky, Diaz, Moylan, JJ, EOF, and Prado, all of whom are arb-eligible. IOW, we’re screwed, and there’s some potential DFAs coming soon.
Yakker - October 12, 2010
You still pay DFAs
Unless someone picks them up, which usually won’t happen in the case of a truly bad contract.
Non-tenders will be running rampant, though.
-C
cthabeerman - October 13, 2010
Sorry
Meant non-tenders. Don’t think we’d DFA anyone making significant money.
Yakker - October 13, 2010
A guy that nobody mentioned
Conor Jackson would be a nice bat off the bench and a good RH bat to spell Freeman against tough LHP.
Jay212033 - October 12, 2010
Touche’, I like that.
king of games - October 12, 2010
I'm Sorry
But it really sucks that we’re talking about this right now.
Yakker - October 12, 2010
What about Ross?
Any thoughts on getting Ross some time at 1B this spring training? He’s a good enough defender behind the plate to make me think he could perform adequately in a platoonish role w/ Freeman at 1st.
I doubt management would want both their catchers out on the field at the same time, but might be worth considering.
chriti04 - October 12, 2010
Ross is too good to waste as a backup catcher really.
king of games - October 12, 2010
I do like this idea...
If it works, both Freeman and McCann can get their rest without much drop-off at the plate.
Dunno if Freddi will go for it, tho.
-C
cthabeerman - October 13, 2010
I think either this, or we need to trade him for an everyday outfielder. Ross could start for 2/3 of the teams in the league, and a starting caliber catcher with his contract would be immensely valuable in a trade.
king of games - October 13, 2010
We just re-signed him...
I don’t think there’s any chance of a trade involving him, at least next season. The following year, maybe…depends on how well the team is doing.

HansonManCrush - October 12, 2010 via mobile
Might as well
Hopefully everything will be cleaned up by the time February 14th rolls around.
Yakker - October 12, 2010
Seems like a fair AFL contingent
Freeman will get at least a 1/2 season trial @ 1B next year so getting him some extra ABs would be nice.
Even the scouts are divided on whether Pastornicky will be a ML starter or just a utility guy so I’d like to get every look at him as we possibly can before deciding if he’s got a future with us or if he’s just trade bait.
Cordier needs to make a breakthrough soon or he’ll be just another in a long list of talented kids who never made it to the show due to injury. Getting him in front of a new Pitching Coach can’t hurt his development.
I don’t really know what to make of Harrilchak. I’ve always thought of him as more organizational fodder than an actual prospect, but I’ve seen that many others disagree. I still see his upside as closer to Matt Young than a legit ML starter though.
The rest seem are just BP arms. It seems that we like to showcase them in the AFL for either trade bait or to see if they can fill in back there on the ML club.

Freddie Freeman went 0-4 with a K
Lance Broadway gave up a run and struck out two in an inning.
Phoenix lost 8-3.
Scott Coleman - October 13, 2010
Michael Broadway? Lance Broadway is a horrible person, while Mike is an awesome guy. And I’m not just saying Lance Broadway is a horrible person because he’s one of the biggest douche bags I’ve ever met, but also because there’s some irrefutable proof.
cbwilk - October 13, 2010
Oh wow
Yeah…definitely Mike Broadway, not Lance. That’s what I get for being lazy.
Scott Coleman - October 13, 2010
Wow, I didn’t realize the AFL started this soon after the season. I thought for some reason it started after the playoffs were over, but I guess we haven’t been to the playoffs in so long I forgot that the season did end 10 days ago.
I think Freeman needs to either be given the shot at the everyday job next year or put back in AAA for more seasoning if they think he needs it. You can’t platoon a young player like that who is still learning as you just won’t get him enough at bats. Not only that, but if you platoon him he won’t get many AB’s vs left handers and I think that hurts the growth of a hitter more than anything. You need to learn to hit lefties and righties…
