It was an unfortunate result for the Braves, who got a great performance from Derek Lowe, but couldn't muster enough offense and didn't play good defense behind him. Lowe had a no-hitter working into the sixth inning with a 1-0 lead, but he surrendered a home run to Cody Ross for the first hit and the first run.
Brian McCann gave the Braves the lead again the next inning with a solo home run, but Lowe ran out of gas in the seventh, walking two Giants to load the bases. A throwing error by Alex Gonzalez one batter later allowed the tying run to score, but replays showed that while the throw was high to Infante at second base, he did hold the bag. Another bad call by the umpiring crew in this series goes against the Braves. After a strikeout that would have been the third out, the Giants go ahead on a seeing-eye single.
The Braves had plenty of run-scoring opportunities. They left nine men on base and were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. The young lefty Madison Bumgarner did a good job of working his way out of trouble, and the Giants relievers were a bunch of magicians. Atlanta threatened in the ninth inning with runners on first and second and one out, but Omar Infante struck out and Melky Cabrera made the last out of the Braves season.
The Braves lose another one-run postseason game. Every game of this series has been decided by one run. Simply amazing.
Bobby Cox came out for a curtain call after managing this rag-tag group of players in his last game as the skipper of the Atlanta Braves. With the crowd cheering and chanting "Bobby, Bobby," even the Giants players tipped their caps and applauded the future Hall of Fame manager.
It is unfortunate and ironic that a manager who stressed fundamentals and fielding as much as Bobby Cox did, has his final series and his final game undone by poor fielding. We'll miss you, Bobby.
For an inning by inning recap of the game, go here. More on the game tomorrow morning, sad end to an exciting season.

our defense was our biggest weakness all year.
Braves Biceps - October 11, 2010
Thanks for all the memories Bobby Cox! I hope in your new consulting role, your first 2 recommendations are Fredi Gonzalez as your replacement, and Jayson Werth for left field!!!
leedawg - October 11, 2010
I’d rather see Werth in center. Centerfielders are much harder to find than left fielders, and Werth’s got the stuff to play league average or slightly better D.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
Thanks Bobby
Go Braves
Braves24 - October 11, 2010
I would happily take either Werth or Crawford
…and get Chone Figgins too!
deewill23 - October 11, 2010
Gotta wait and see what happens with Chipper first.
Scott Coleman - October 11, 2010
which is why I think any "big" move will be in the OF first
you can’t go nab an infielder when you might end up not needing them.
nuftjedi - October 11, 2010
i'd rather
take none of the above
drumzalicious - October 12, 2010
I'd have no problem with Werth playing center field against lefties
because then we can still use Diaz in left. Against RHP, we could use one of Melky/Ankiel/McLouth…. although I hope we are able to get rid of 2 of those in the offseason, leaving us w 4 outfielders
leedawg - October 11, 2010
Ankiel’s deal is up and Melky is a surefire nontender. Worst case scenario next year’s Opening Day outfield looks exactly like this year’s. Best-case, we get a guy like Werth who can provide a big bat and patrol center and either find a way to offload McLouth and find a platoon mate for Diaz or, if necessary, platoon McLouth and Diaz.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
I take that back. Melky started Opening Day. Replace him with Diaz, and next year’s outfield looks just like this year’s.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
We def. need a rosterbation
how many guys from the outfield alone are non-tender able?
Richie Grogan - October 11, 2010
I’m sure we’ll get one up in the next few days. Let’s just enjoy and reflect on the season for a few days though.
What everyone does in the privacy of their basement is up to them though.
Scott Coleman - October 11, 2010
No Werth plz.
Those types of contracts almost never work out long term.

Plus
He’s a scumbag.
Sam Jethroe - October 11, 2010
Werth cant and should not ever play center
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
I don’t want that dirtbag anywhere near Turner Field in a Braves uni. If you think Escobar was a bad fit, Werth would make him look like the team captain.
Aaron Meier - October 12, 2010 via mobile
Not to mention...
All the players would have to lock up their wives at home.

The thing that really sucks
If we had Prado and/or Wagner we would’ve easily won
Any chance we could get Beltre in FA?
KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010
What do you do with Chipper?
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
Please be realistic
He isn’t going to be able to do anything…
KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010
until
he is healthy
Braves24 - October 11, 2010
Yet he’s coming back. You want he should play left field again, or what?
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
What are you getting on about?
The guy already claimed he was going to try to come back. If he comes back the only place he can play is 3rd base.
We are stuck unless he decides to retire.
“Realistic”, my ass. Learn what you’re talking about.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
You think Chipper is going to be effective next year?!
the guy couldn’t do anything healthy this year, you think coming back from knee surgury he’ll be even better?
That’s what the realistic part is about…wake up he isn’t going to come back and all of the sudden be All-Star HOF Chipper
KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010
Listen, dude, not once did I claim Chipper was going to be effective next season. Not once. Reading comprehension is not your friend.
The fact is he did say he was coming back next season, and the only spot he can realistically play is at third base. Freeman will be locked in at first and there’s no way Chipper can (our would want) to play the OF. We are stuck with him at third unless he has a change of heart and decides to retire.
That means no Adrian Beltre. That was the point.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010

This looks like as good a spot as any.
Congratulations on getting back to the playoffs. My condolences on the briefness of the experience (You were beset with a staggering run of injuries which, negated, would probably have reversed the results.) and the (apparent) ending to the truly legendary careers of both Mssrs. Cox and Wagner.
I say “apparent” because these days one never really knows…do they, Mr. Favre?
I’m not a big fan of TBS’ poorly synched live MLB – TV broadcast, so I screw around trying to avoid the results until the fully graphiced and Stocktoned archived game shows up. So I was reading a book on Koufax (who risked the regular use of his arm so that Dodger fans could rejoice…what was he thinking?) and then decided to read a little online NY Times, thinking “If I just avoid the sports section I’ll be OK.”
The Times holds Bobby in a higher regard, I’m sure, than the Post does – because there on the front page was the story of the game and the close of the heralded career.
Again, congratulations on an exciting season.

I figure the 21K comments sort of links me to 'em.
Which would be fine if some folks (The reigning banhammer at Gaslamp Ball, fr’ instance) didn’t leap to the conclusion that I’m one of MCC’s representatives, you know? So I try to clear up confusion… before I reestablish it with my content.
They’re mostly OK folks. just some past differences of opinion.
victor frankenstein - October 11, 2010
I’m rooting for you guys against the Phillies, but I don’t really think you have a chance in hell to be honest.
Their 1-2-3 is better than our 1-2-3 and our guys shut your lineup down for most of the series. There are just too many holes in your lineup to compete against those bastards.
You do have hellacious pitching though, so who knows? Good luck either way. Timmy is the man.
get swoll yunel - October 12, 2010
good luck with the re-establishment there, victor.
i forsee you lasting oh, i dunno, 1 month before you’re banned here as well. careful, guys- you’re dealing with a sociopath. Victor was run out of MCC awhile ago for personal attacks made on members, among other things…
Anyhow, great series guys, honestly, the best division series out of all of them this year. all one run games, all could have gone either way. sad to see bobby go, and wish you the best of luck in 2011

FitzFan - October 12, 2010
disregardtherain - October 11, 2010
BRB. Gotta go throw up.
Seriously though, how much longer is MLB gonna let shit like this stand? That’s two games in this series that should have been tied but were tipped to the Giants by blown calls. I hope to God that they institute instant replay at that December meeting. I don’t want to see one more postseason loss dictated by the likes of Paul Emmel.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
What plays are reviewable and what plays aren’t? That’s really the issue here.
The games already drag on for way too long.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
More long
more fun
KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010
give each manager one challenge
if they get it right, they get one more. if not then their done.
any other “challenge” to a call is an automatic ejection.
I’d say anything other than balls/strikes is reviewable.
nuftjedi - October 11, 2010
I like the NFL system
two challenges and if you win both you get one more
Richie Grogan - October 11, 2010
Paul Emmel
REALLY bad job all around.
Last night he was calling outside strikes – fine and dandy.
But then he’d call the same pitch a ball.
Then he’d call it a strike again.
BOTH sides, all game.
When it’s on small call that doesn’t affect the overall outcome (Yes, not too many of those in this series.) that’s one thing, but when they’re gamechangers…or there are so many small ones that cumulatively one could argue that they influenced the game…intervention is called for. Maybe not the whole replay review, maybe just a verification of the correct optical prescription.
victor frankenstein - October 11, 2010
Emmel is an utter hack and should NEVER be allowed to umpire another baseball game at any level.
But this means that he will have many more years of screwing the pooch in MLB games, and some of them with huge consequences.
Sabean's_Folly - October 14, 2010
Might as well
It seems anytime a player or manager argues they get thrown within 10 seconds.
dragonhawk26 - October 11, 2010
In the postseason, virtually anything should be reviewable apart from balls and strikes. Let’s let the true winners move on.
It shouldn’t take too long. With the modern technology available, give the umps an ear piece to a guy in the booth with video access. He reviews it and calls in the decision. It would take 15 seconds or less. Any bang-bang play like that could be reviewed in no time if there’s any doubt.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
That seems reasonable, but this is Bud Selig we’re talking about here, so we know nothing like that is actually going to happen.
We’d also have plenty of those “is the evidence really clear enough to overturn the call” situations like football always has. Those are great.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
Bud Selig needs to go home and stay there. I hope the teams are so vocal at the December meeting that they have no choice but to do something to get the calls right from now on. Either a serious ass-whoopin for the umps or instant replay, or both.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
THIS
I don’t know why Bud Selig can’t get his head out of his ass and realize that instant replay in baseball won’t cause the games to take as long as he thinks it will.
For god’s sake — since he has done nothing but fuck up the game since he took over as commissioner, he at the very least owes it to the fans to institute replay in the playoffs so teams don’t get shit out of wins that they earned, but were screwed over by the umpires.
BW Smith - October 12, 2010
close calls in the postseason…except for balls/strikes
forgotten_glory - October 11, 2010
Bud Selig
can go suck a dick, he is so worthless
TurnerTheBurner - October 11, 2010
THIS
I’ve hated that useless putz for years. Screw your “human element,” Bud. No one gives a shit when it unjustly sends them packing from the playoffs. You’re lucky Ron Gardenhire hasn’t cleaved off your head yet; the Twins have had the worst of this nonsense by far.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
x1,000,000,000,000
Fuck Selig and all of the shitty umps in MLB.
NCBraves - October 11, 2010
Personally I think it's pretty pathetic, really.
The game deserves better. I just don’t see how it’s such a difficult decision to make. The first priority should be to get the calls right so that the games are decided by the players. Period. The technology is all there. The higher-ups just need to wake up and make the change. It’s past time.
Cayla - October 11, 2010
i agree, the umpiring was bad all around, yes, we caught the better half of the breaks, but remember that during the reg season we got cheated out of two, yes two, games by umps making bad calls on what were game winning plays at the plate.
we almost didnt make the playoffs because of those calls cost us two games in the standings. Personally, I see it as our “karmic umpire fund” being drained.
When calls go your way, you don’t complain. When they don’t, you do. Same with us. So really, in the end I think it all balances out. but, that’s just my op
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Get real, It didn't balance out in this series. Not even close.

I’m gonna start a countdown until the first official day of the off-season.
First priority: Get a group of guys to help Melky clean out his locker. If that worthless piece of crap is on the Braves in 2011, I’m done being a fan. I’ll start liking the Royals or something.

Priority #1: Non-tender Melky
Priority #2: Tell Chipper to make his mind up.
Priority #3: Look for suiters for KK. I’d love a KK-for-Figgins trade. Figgins had an off year, but there’s something seriously wrong in Seattle. He’d be fine here.
Priority #4: Decide what to do with DLowe. This will be very interesting.
or that’s what I’d do anyways.
Scott Coleman - October 11, 2010
Hire new manager?

would you rather have heyward or bumgarner? we’re split over at MCC, but most stick with bumgarner.
both will be top flight players for years to come, not to mention the posey/heyward battle
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
You’d rather have a solid #2/low #1 lefty than the probable best player in the National League for the next decade or so?
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
people have been calling bumgarner the next coming of andy pettitte.
heyward is showing good plate discipline, but its too early to tell if he will be an MVP type player. personally, he looks to be a low average, high OBP kind of hitter.
his development will establish his ranking in the years to come
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Seriously? He hit .277 during the season, and that’s with him playing nearly a month with a busted thumb which totally killed his numbers. He should’ve been on the DL, but he didn’t tell anyone about the injury because he already had so many guys out of the lineup.
He’s also 21, and was 20 for a majority of the season. He had one of the 10 best seasons in Major League history for a 20-year old. Do you not realize that? He came up just short of a .400OBP. 12 other players have done that in history. 11 are in the Hall of Fame and the other is ARod. And let’s not ignore that Heyward was arguably the best defensive RF in the NL at this young age and is one of the better base runners in the league.
This isn’t even worth discussing. There isn’t a GM, scout, coach, etc. in professional baseball who would honestly take Madison Bumgarner over Jason Heyward. That’s just stupid. And let’s not even get into the fact that a pitcher is much, much, much more injury prone than a position player.
MadBum is a fine looking young pitcher, but to honestly take him over Jason Heyward? To quote NFL Sunday Countdown, “Come on, man!”
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010

a hooter's baby - October 12, 2010
During the off-season I’m going to work on not over-reacting to certain posts. It’ll help keep me calmer and help me stay out of heated arguments. In other words, to (hopefully) help me mature a bit more as a writer.
But when I read that they’d rather have Bumgarner over Heyward…well, I just can’t hold my fingers back.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
hey, you’ve been watching heyward all year. we’ve been watching bumgarner all year. there will be differences of opinion, no doubt.
days like today are proof how invaluable a pitcher of bumgarners caliber are. that could have been madbum, so we call him, shutting us down and notching the win for you guys, evening out the series.
teams annually overpay for good young pitchers with good prospects, which is why i stand by madbum being the better pick for the giants.
its all up to discretion until we see how these players develop. considering how well we develop pitchers, id put my money on madbum to quickly rise to the NL’s Elite along with Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez. (i dont know much about your pitchers, any good young ones, other than hanson?)
as would i put my money on Heyward to rise the the NL’s Elite hitters, along with Posey.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Your argument works...
for your team.
We shit Bumgarners out of our farm system year after year, so he just wouldn’t be as valuable to us…

This quote makes me smile.
Sam Jethroe - October 12, 2010
you said “There isn’t a GM, scout, coach, etc. in professional baseball who would honestly take Madison Bumgarner over Jason Heyward.”
we did. we took bumgarner over heyward. drafted by the same guys who drafted lincecum, posey, cain and sanchez.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
To be fair
Lincecum was also drafted in 2003 by the Cubs and in 2005 by the Indians.
I’ll give you Sanchez though. Good pick from the 27th round.
award6 - October 12, 2010
I believe he was talking about right now.
Based on what’s known about the two right now, not back when they were drafted.
Tarkus - October 12, 2010
He's talking about right now. Nearly half the league took someone over Heyward. So what's your point?
FitzFan - October 12, 2010
I'd definitely take Heyward.
Pitchers are way too prone to injury. I’d take a top everyday player any day, at least over the long haul.
Tarkus - October 12, 2010
i agree that pitchers are more prone to injury, but in Heywards case, he’s already been on the DL, at 20… wrist, was it? that’s def not a good sign.
it remains to be seen whether heyward will develop into a top 10 player- how the Braves handle him will be key
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
He had a thumb injury.
That’s hardly cause for concern, nor any predictor for future injuries.
Look at Stephen Strasburg. For a couple months, people had him in the Hall of Fame, but now he’s probably out for at least a year. That’s what pitchers do. Heck, nine All-Stars this year previously had Tommy John surgery, including our own Tim Hudson. You rarely see those kind of injuries for position players, but for pitchers it’s fairly common. Kerry Woods, Mark Pryor, Mark Fidrych, the list goes on and on and on.
Tarkus - October 12, 2010
In regard to this series: I was proud of how our team was IN each game and could have won them.
We didn’t allow the Giants to run away with any of them. They all came down to the last at bat for each team.
About losing the series:
IF we were to be eliminated and not go all the way, I personally would rather it be the Giants than the dang Phillies.
NCChopper - October 11, 2010
the Giants don’t run away with games, most of the time. We built a 92 win season out of winning by 1-3 runs with every game- thats how the Giants are, they’ve been playing tight games all year.
We don’t score much, but our pitching allows less. We’ll take the Phils, I can only be confident.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Well, because of the nice gesture to Bobby by your team (and Manager) last – I’ll be rooting for you all the way.
However, it will be checking the box score via my phone or computer because I can’t stomach watching the Phillies on a baseball field another game this year.
I hope even if you don’t win the NLCS, you at least take them the full series and make them struggle for each win so they will be tired for whomever they might face in the WS. I’ll root for the AL before I’ll root for the Phillies.
NCChopper - October 12, 2010
Hopefully all the Giants’ weak ground balls will find a way through against the Phillies too

Kineticist - October 11, 2010
Anyone
who would like to blame Bobby for our loss in the NLDS can go kick rocks. The only team aside from the Braves to have any sort of serious injury in the post-season is the Reds. Other than that the fact that we got as far as we did without our:
1. Closer
2. Setup Man
3. Lead-Off hitter since May
4. 3rd Baseman
Just says a lot about how great of a job Bobby and Wren did putting this team together and holding it together.
All I know is Bobby doesn’t swing the bats. He doesn’t catch the balls. Nor does he throw the pitches. It’s not his fault we lost. Period.

DolphinNation - October 11, 2010

but I think we should say goodbye to him too. The Braves will never give him a shot at a full-time role and there are cheaper 4th outfielders out there

I'm wiping tears as we speak,
but just wanted to stop in to say thanks to everyone here at TC. I’ve been a Braves fan since I was a kid, but was unable to really follow them after TBS stopped showing the games. This year I found MLB.tv and this blog and it has been an awesome year. There are so many great people here that just make this a fun place to be. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone, and I can’t wait until next year.
And of course, thanks for everything Bobby. It’s hard to imagine the Braves without you.

Heyward.
Enjoy the offseason kid. We need you to stay hot through October next year

I would like to see us offer Arbitration to DLEE
If he doesn’t accept we get picks
If he does accept we have a nice 1B all next year…I think Freeman could stay down another year is this is a possible senario
KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010
he would be too expensive.

drumzalicious - October 11, 2010
Some of the stuff
I read on this site make me wonder…
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
Jason vs Freddy has a nice ring to it.
Jason and Freddy could be a scary combo. We just need a PInhead to join them.
Broccoman - October 12, 2010
No doubt
Plus we need to get healthy (Odarp, Chipper, Meds, JJ) and get Freeman entrenched at 1B.
DolphinNation - October 11, 2010
yep
that lineup and even if our pitching is 1/2 as good as this year, we are automatically a top team
nuftjedi - October 11, 2010
Just gotta fill the holes in the lineup
CF ?
Odarp – 2B
Chipper – 3B
McCann – C
LF ?
Heyward – RF
Freeman – 1B
SS ?

Infante as backup / platoon at third.... we're gonna need it.
SuperNewb - October 11, 2010
I like Infante as the super-util guy
DolphinNation - October 11, 2010
We just need to clone Infante at least twice. Then, no matter what happens to our infield starters, we’re good.
Aaron Meier - October 12, 2010 via mobile
I'd be shocked if we didn't pick up Gonzo's option
it’s cheap and there is nothing available that’s much better on the free agent market
leedawg - October 11, 2010
indeed
im quite confused why people are so eager to get rid of him.
drumzalicious - October 11, 2010
I'm not saying going out on the FA market
I just think we can fill that void in house.
DolphinNation - October 11, 2010
That would be
Because he sucks. Really really badly.
personally I’m aware of the reality that we have no choice but to keep him, but it doesn’t change my desire be rid of him forever.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
His bat is terrible, but he’s still got a quality glove and we have no viable in house options to replace him… yet.
I think we’ll for sure pick up the cheap option.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
Once again: we’ll pick up the option because we have no choice, unless we want to field Jeff Porter there. But that doesn’t mean he deserves to play, per se. I’d just as soon be rid of him if any other options present themselves this postseason. But they won’t.
J-Freak - October 11, 2010
They’re aren’t really many slick fielding SS with quality bats out there, though. We had one, but we got rid of him because he didn’t do things the “Braves way”.
Desiring something and actually being able to acquire something are different animals. Teams are not going to deal away quality SS unless it is for haul.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
You mean like play hard, run hard, be a team guy?
Tarkus - October 11, 2010
Yunel was just a huge flake. The Braves have always prided themselves on having a team full of stoic pros who aren’t prone to doing anything out of line, and Yunel just didn’t fit the mold at all.
It’s a shame because the guy was hugely talented and entering his prime, but what are you gonna do?
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
Agreed.
Loved the talent, hated the space between his ears.
Tarkus - October 11, 2010
Honestly...what about Mycal Jones?
He can’t be as bad as Gonzalez was the last month of the season, both in the field and at the plate.
DolphinNation - October 11, 2010
I think he's probably about 2 years away
leedawg - October 11, 2010
What about that Andrus kid?
Oh wait…he’s in Texas…FML
DolphinNation - October 11, 2010
Andrus doesn’t really have much of a stick, either.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
True
BUT he has outstanding speed and is a top 3 SS defender(Tulo/Reyes)
KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010
he's 22
with outstanding defense
Braves24 - October 11, 2010
Sure, he’s young, but he’s never really shown flashes of being that great of a hitter and he regressed considerably this year at the plate.
The guy has Luis Castillo power. It’s just non-existent.
Anything over a .700 OPSish for his career would be a surprise to me. This is essentially what Sea Bass gives you.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
Looking at the numbers, I don’t know if it’s fair to say he “regressed considerably” at the plate… his walk rate was actually up this season. It’s just that the .301 slugging % he put up is pretty horrific. And he gets caught stealing too often for his SBs to actually be a benefit. Maybe he was playing hurt…?
The above should read “.700ish” OPS btw.
get swoll yunel - October 11, 2010
Yeah, the .301 slugging % in that ballpark is scary.
dunnytwogloves - October 12, 2010
He's a Sally bat. Don't miss him at all.
FitzFan - October 12, 2010
in other words
he is a weaker version of Gonzalez
drumzalicious - October 12, 2010
At this point in both of their careers, Andrus is the superior defender (although not by a whole lot) and Gonzalez gives you considerably more pop while making a lot more outs.
Andrus could potentially improve at the plate of course, but the upgrade he would give us over Sea Bass is not so dramatic that we should be pulling our hair out or anything.
get swoll yunel - October 12, 2010
A-Gonz
D has been nothing short of spectacular. Yes. Yes. And once more yes. pick up his option.
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
ss = A-gon...right? signed till end of next year
Kineticist - October 11, 2010
He's has a $2.5 million option for 2011.
I think we keep him. I know he started pressing and tried to do too much in September, but he was the RBI leader for the team in August.
The small amount of money makes it worth the risk.

6. Nate McLouth LF
7. Alex Gonzalez
8. Rick Ankiel
9. Pitcher.
Looks pretty nice to me.

drumzalicious - October 11, 2010

KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010
I could take Ankiel for minimum, compete for roster spot type deal, as the 5th OF/defensive replacement.
Not for his option.
Broccoman - October 12, 2010
Would some time spent with Chipper, at a leisurely pace working on his swing, make him worth keeping just for his defense alone? if he could find a way to make contact more often, he could be a heck of an asset to this team.
If Chipper can get Nate to start hitting the ball, he can help anyone.
NCChopper - October 12, 2010
Infante probably would've been a better OF option than McLouth
deewill23 - October 11, 2010

Whew
That seems like it would take a miracle. He looks broken.
-InsertWittyNameHere- - October 11, 2010
recently yes, but before we made the playoffs it looked like he turned a corner
Braves24 - October 11, 2010
Yeah, definitely. Hopefully that means he’s not really broken and it would take little to get him back on track. Unfortunately, sometimes that takes a change of scenery.
-InsertWittyNameHere- - October 11, 2010
the thing about Nate
is that his ceiling is an all-star and gold glover
that makes it hard to just cut him loose vs. someone that has a ceiling of just being serviceable.
nuftjedi - October 11, 2010
If he was doing good before we made the playoffs, then why would he need a change of scenery? I understand what you are saying but why would we dump him when he was starting to turn things around?
Braves24 - October 11, 2010
I don’t think we should, not at all. I’ve just seen it before too many times that as soon as a guy switched teams he gets back on track (Yunel).
-InsertWittyNameHere- - October 11, 2010
Very nice
But would we still have gone after Lee if Chipper never went down?
kd8698 - October 12, 2010
I think so. We could have played Prado there with Omar at second, I guess, but it was obvious Troy wasn’t going to come around and we’d need someone.

Yeah as obvious a weakness as that is

Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
our FO is sketchy too, though they have made some killer deals over the last year and do very well in the draft.
yet zito, rowand, renteria, derosa eat up nearly half our payroll, or $45 mil. none of them have any role on the team in the playoffs (or even in the season, other than zito, who has sucked, to put it nicely) only renteria is off the books next year. we are stuck with $30mil in sunk costs of zito (til 2013) and rowand (2012)

drumzalicious - October 12, 2010
it’s funny, we only ended up with Ross to block SD, he fell into our laps, earned the RF job over 5 other OFs, and whaddya know? He’s an awesome dude, one of my fav Giants.
We really put together a scrappy team, Huff, Burrell, Torres (all had great years too). I’m surprised my Giants went as far as they have, after all, Bengie Molina was hitting cleanup on opening day. shivers
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
What’s the plan for DeRosa?
Completely forgot he was playing for you guys at the beginning of the year.
award6 - October 12, 2010
i dont know. we havent begun our rosterbation yet (for obvious reasons)
i assume he will be super-utility IF/OF? he pretty much fucked us this year, we signed him, then flappy tendons, so idk what the teams’ plans for him are.
there’s not a man i’d leave off the 25-man we have right now, so i have no idea where he’d fit in. not to mention the team is probably going to sign a big FA to get over the hump (into the WS) so that’s 2 roster spots that would have to go.
DeRosa is a class act, truly, i think he would retire and coach for us before taking some who deserves the spot more

And they are totally ripping the 2B umpire for standing right in front of Conrad.

I have to question Bobby once right now
In the 7th when Posey hit that weak grounder to Glaus for a 1B right after that Bobby pulls him out for Diory, who porbably could have made that play with his speed and much better D than Glaus
Why didn’t he pull Glaus out after our AB and put in Diory to start off the inning? Instead of wait for it…?
KINGSLYTUT - October 11, 2010

I am sick and tired of people throwing around “hindsight”, “monday morning quarterbacking” and “second guessing” as terms to justify any manager making any bad decision they might make and being allowed to skate from any criticism of it.
Here’s the original piece. I linked it last night, too. I don’t read Neyer a lot but it’s dead on the money.

Dream offseason - call me crazy
1 – Trade KK for Figgins to play CF and bat leadoff
2 – Trade DLowe to cut some payroll (get prospects in return) so we can acquire Carl Crawford via FA – 5 years, $80 million
Figgins – CF
Crawford – LF
Chipper – 3B
McCann – C
Heyward – RF
Prado – 2B
Freeman – 1B
Gonzalez – SS

Since when is Chone Figgins a good option at playing CF?
get swoll yunel - October 12, 2010
Since he’s worlds better than McLouth.
NCBraves - October 12, 2010
Not really. They were almost equally abysmal at the plate this year and Chone Figgins is an atrocious defensive CF. McLouth isn’t great out there but he isn’t terrible either.
If your rationale is that Figgins is due to rebound next season because he just had an off year, then why can’t the same be said for McLouth. They both have track records of success and fell off cliffs this season.
Considering that we’re stuck with McLouth’s contract either way, I’m not really seeing any sort of upgrade that Figgins could provide in CF. In the infield, maybe, nut not in center.

kauf67 - October 12, 2010
The way I look at it
Another WS title for Philly in 3 seasons would just leave me pissed off and bitter. Whether it’s reasonable or not, I was disgusted when the Marlins won a second title after only making the playoffs two times in their entire history (both wild cards at that). For the Braves to only win one in 14 tries while the Marlins pull a couple titles out of their ass only to immediately dismantle the team just drove me crazy. It will drive me equally crazy if the Phillies are able to get 2 titles in 3 tries. And their fans are bastards. No way I can pull for them.
I hate the Yankees as much as a the next guy, but another title for them (28 I think it would make it) would just be old hat for them. It’s expected. At this point, I’m not even sure how satisfying it is for them as fans considering their history of success and because they outspend everyone to such an absurd degree that winning a title isn’t even really that impressive.
Yanks all the way if comes down to the meteor match up.

I’m really thankful for this season and all the amazing memories this team gave me. From walking back from class finding out that Jason hit a HR in this first major league at-bat, to watching Ankiel hit one into the water, it’s been such a great ride. No, we didn’t win the World Series, but I think the injuries we’ve been plagued with here at the end were just too much to overcome, even for this team. We fought hard all year and never gave up, and I’ve never seen a team with so much heart. Sadly, I think reality hit us in the end. I don’t want to blame Brooks Conrad, I don’t want to blame anyone, really. I’m so proud of them and Bobby is too.
Thank you, Braves.

Tooner Field is a relic from when Time Warner owned the team, hence all the references to Turner’s Cartoon Network. And I guess I'll go Nostradumbass here...
2011 Opening Day:
Prado
Heyward
Chipper
McCann
Rasmus
Gonzalez
Freeman
McLouth
I hope it’s better though.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
I wouldn't bat rasmus that high
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
who would hit 5th then?
Freeman? Rookie.
Gonzalez? I’ll give up on Opening Day if that happens.
McLouth? LOL
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
No I like Rasmus there.
I hope we get him.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
A-Gon
But thats just me
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
all of us are

Kineticist - October 12, 2010
No way.
Regardless of who we add, Gonzo and his trash OBP shouldn’t hit higher than 7th.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
this
.294 Career OBP means he’s an auto-out.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
Stats don't mean everything
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
Did he not look like a guy with a career .294 OBP at the plate to you?
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
Is it safe to assume Crawford and Werth are out of our reach?
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
If Chipper retires…or I guess if we trade Lowe.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
Man, I would love Crawford in this lineup.
He would bring some speed the Braves haven’t had in awhile.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
$100+M for speed
no thanks. I’ll take Werth.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
Is that the tag you think?
Wow.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
Well the Angels already told the world they’re gonna spend big and they have a ton of cash. The Yankees will surely be in the bidding. The Sox could add (and probably need) an OF. And then there’s always teams who come out of nowhere and enter the bidding to drive the price up.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
Bleh.
I guess that’s how it goes.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
crawford can hit..
speed + hitting + fielding. > >> all our outfielders.

Bring on Freddi Gonzalez, Chone Figgins and a Jayson Werth, Crawford or Kemp…just do it..we have pitching for days.
radamez85 - October 12, 2010
yes
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
Are we talking about Colby Rasmus here?
Why would the Cardinals want to trade that guy?
What exactly would we give up to get him?
get swoll yunel - October 12, 2010
They’ve talked about trading him for months now. I’d be happy with him or Kemp.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
Because they hate him.
Didn’t you hear all the controversy?
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
No, I’m afraid I haven’t. That’s interesting, though.
Him or Kemp would be great. I just would worry about the package it would take to pry one of them away.
get swoll yunel - October 12, 2010
I think a deal of Randall Delgado, either Dunn or EOF and then a guy like Tyler Pastornicky seems fair for Rasmus. A little less for Kemp.

Hell of a year. Ravaged by injuries, and we still gave ‘em hell! I’ll remember the 2010 Braves fondly. The future is bright. Go Braves!!
Frozen Fan - October 12, 2010 via mobile
I’ve cried way too much than is healthy for it being over baseball. But I’m really gonna miss Bobby, even though I didn’t always agree with how he did things. And this team was just amazing. I only wish we had made it through completely healthy to show the rest of the world that.
I’m actually really glad that Bobby’s last game was here at home. It would seem wrong for it to be in San Fran, or worse if we made the NLCS… in Philadelphia. And major props to the Giants for stopping their celebration to applaud Bobby. Dodgers might be my #2 team, but the Giants scored major points in my book for that. Classy move.
Sarahbeth - October 12, 2010
Anyone found photos confirming or disproving the call that Infante was off the base?
None of the replays were clear (don’t have HD), been looking for a difinitive pic without luck.
Like the guy in “Dirty Harry”, “I gots ta know!”
John Drake number 6 - October 12, 2010
Haha I like the analogy.
I’ve seen the replay a few times. It’s almost impossible to tell. The number of close calls in this series is ridiculous.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
yeah it was rediculous. just when i thought i’d seen every type of close call, something new comes along. the only call i saw that was truly blown- not inconclusive, or tie to the runner- and not minding the strike zone- that’s up to each ump- was Posey at 2nd in game 1, but from the umps angle, i can see why he called safe, he wasn’t positiioned well in the first place
then again, in the playoffs everything is magnified. maybe we’re seeing this many blown calls (speaking to all the postseason series this year) because everything is under a mag glass, and umps really are this bad, we just didnt notice as much in the reg season.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Its been fun
A whole lot of fun.
Go braves and we’ll see ya next year. Who am I kidding, sooner than that.
I’m ready for NAHWAL already
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
Hey, so do you guys, hopefully without any bias, think Heyward is the superior rookie to Posey? we drafted Bumgarner over Heyward, too, lol. im split on whether i would have done the same.
Heyward is a higher OBP guy, but Posey has more power and plays a premium position handling the top staff in baseball. If they could split the award, I’d be happy. We had a great rookie class here in 2010.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Too early to tell.
But I’d vote Posey ROY for this season. He earned it. At the risk of sounding like a total homer, Heyward battled thumb injuries in the middle of the season and saw his batting avg drop to around .240 but I’m not about to give him extra credit for what I think he could have done if healthy.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
I think I misread the question.
Posey had the better rookie year. That’s my final answer.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
No
and that ercks me to say but Posey, as of right now, is better than Heyward
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
honestly, posey is blowing down every barrier i think anyone thought would stop him. no one, including myself, thought he would be this good. I know I’m on your site, so i don’t want to gush about him (you’ve seen his stats, and know how good he is anyhow).
I fully expect to see both players are superstars for many years to come.
the main diff between heyward and posey is the age. heyward is 20 vs poseys 23, so the development of Heyward will be critical to his success.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Ask me in
5 years and I’ll and the rest of BBTN would gladly sell the farm for Heyward
Kineticist - October 12, 2010
there are a few things i worry about with heyward. 1) his ability to stay healthy (already on DL at 20), 2) his SLG %. hopefully the power will come. 3) his ability to hit lefties. he appears to be a pull hitter who has trouble with lefties.
then with posey- 1) being able to stay healthy as a F/T catcher. 2) has demonstrated heyward-ish patience at the plate, but doesn’t have the walks to show for it. perhaps SSS, not sure
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Yep
I just started wondering not too long ago if Heyward was gonna be was of those guys who always has to play through nagging injuries. I’m not too concerned with the slugging, and he’s shown flashes of…(better word than “competence”) against lefties but other times they really get em. His plate discipline has been unreal at times though. As far the pull hitter thing goes, I believe he had a few oppo homeruns at your park near the beginning of the season. I know 3 games don’t mean anything, just saying sometimes he looks completely focussed, others, just lost.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
I gotta say, I'm surprised to see that Heyward's numbers next to Posey's are pretty comparable
Sure doesn’t feel like it. Posey’s been on fire.
wOBA*: Posey (.376), Heyward (.400)
As far as plate discipline goes O-swing: Posey (28.3%), Heyward (24.3%)
Slugging, we know Posey > Heyward
OBP, Heyward > Posey
I didn’t look up the last two because I pretty much know the story there. Still probably would go with Posey though because it’s hard to say these numbers pass the eyeball test. Posey seems tougher right now.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
It's the closest race we've seen in quite a while
Both guys should win, to be perfectly honest. When you see what Heyward’s done from Day 1 as a 20-year old and what Posey has done as a 23-year old catcher handling one of the two or three best pitching staffs in the league, it’s pretty remarkable. Both guys are going to be great.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
I heard somebody say once that they should give out 2 NLROY's instead of an ALROY one
And I gotta agree.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
im gonna have to agree too. i think both players possess different but incredible skill talents, and both should win the award.
i think it comes down to positional advantage, though. posey plays a premium position handling the top staff in MLB (by the numbers) and the staff has only gotten better with him calling games. Jonathan Sanchez used to be a loose cannon, so much talent, but afraid to harness it. but with posey catching, he’s dumped his personal catcher (whiteside) and has truly gotten a grip on his stuff, like you guys saw yesterday.
overall, both players are going to be the best at what they do- and as baseball fans, that’s the best-case scenario
sometimes im pissed we drafted bumgarner over heyward, sometimes im happy we went with bumgarner.
but overall, keeping both heyward and posey on the Giants past FA would probably not have been doable, as both will command top dollar, while bum will come cheaper than heyward in 5 years. but i digress, not the point.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
creek johnson post 1:
for the good of the game, and seeing superstars develop right before our eyes, i hope Heyward can stay injury-free… it was sad to see such a talent, like Griffey for example, have a career massively cut short due to health issues.
his competence against lefties may just be SSS, or it may be up to the quality of the reliever. our guy Lopez who K’d him every time is a top situational loogy, so that’s not the best frame of reference.
plate discipline is not something that can be taught, so heyward is the mass goods in that dept.
same guy, post 2:
the comparability of Posey’s numbers can be slightly misleading. he missed the first 55-60 games of the year due to being in AAA (dial in catching), and didnt start hitting for power (or even playing regularly) until bengie was traded and he was made F/T catcher, for some reason. so what we’re looking at here is 3 months of a starting postion’s worth of numbers.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Posey’s SLG was .506, Heywards was in the .450s, IIRC, but Heywards OBP is superior. Given that heyward hit in the 2 hole, while Posey cleanup, their natural OBPs are probably near each other, but Heyward does get the nod, .380 heyward, .350 posey (career avgs, inc minors).
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Heyward vs Lefties
OBP: .356
SLG: .399
OPS: .755
wOBA: .341
wRC+: 115
I’d wanna see him improve for sure, but it’s not like he’s Curtis Granderson out there against the southpaws.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
And do they have an adjusted OBP for that?
Position in the lineup?
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
yes, there are. they can be found on espn.com, shows a player’s stats by lineup position. Posey’s walks rate was much better when he was hitting in the 2 hole and the 6 hole, but have dropped since going into cleanup. but remember, SSS. it would take a year or more to get a full picture.
heyward is no curtis granderson… but he wishes he could be!! nah, just playin.
heywards splits aren’t great, his SLG is esp lacking vs LHP along with his average, though he takes walks great vs LHP. hopefully he doesn’t become stuck as a 2 hole hitter because his OBP is high and but his power doesn’t develop.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
I doubt he'll be stuck there
But since I have no idea who the next manager is gonna be I also have no idea where he’s gonna bat.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
On a side note
I fucking hate not knowing who it’s gonna be. People could feel however they wanted about Cox but you could never doubt what he was capable of, because he did it.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
how heyward develops will determine his BA spot. cox might have wanted to keep the pressure off heyward. his splits against LHP probably prevented a 3 hole position for him.
they haven’t said anything yet? no prospects?
i wonder if they will pull someone who has MLB managerial experience, or go with the AAA manager. the trendy pick these days isnt veteran managers
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
btw- BBTN is not exactly the basis for informed baseball. it’s pretty east coast biased, and some of their analyists are straight up stupid. Harold Reynolds, Buster Olney, Dave Winfield, John Kruk… Nomar is the only informed one who doesn’t talk out his ass.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Posey should probably win ROY.
But does that seriously count for anything? Chris Coghlan and J.A. Happ finished ahead of Tommy Hanson last year in ROY voting. Which one would you rather have now and going forward?
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
It's always fun to win.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
I guess...
I really don’t think this one’s locked up though.
Scott Coleman - October 12, 2010
Me neither.
Creek Johnson - October 12, 2010
me either.
i think the impact posey made on SF after arriving, esp after the molina trade, are telling. though they aren’t voting for MVP so that’s probably moot.
since their stats are near identical, here’s some tipping point thoughts-
i think Posey’s positional advantage may get him the ROTY, but then again Heyward was there from day 1 and was hyped up to begin with, whereas posey “came out of nowhere”.
also, heyward may get the award because there are more east coast sportswriters who cover the NL east and have seen more of heyward than posey, than there are west coast sportswriters who have seen more of posey than heyward
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Posey's gonna win it
But it’s amazing what Heyward has done this year for a 20/21 year old. A near .400 OBP, probably the most important stat for a hitter, is outstanding. Posey went to one of the best programs in the country and played for one of the best managers in college baseball and got all the seasoning he needed. They’re both going to be great players.

Just read this on Braves.com...
“At the end of his final news conference, which lasted a little more than five minutes, even the sometimes cynical, jaded and hardscrabble media members paid him his due. Usually there’s no cheering in the press box or the press room. It’s a hard and fast unwritten rule. Not on Monday, though. As Cox stepped down from the microphones, he was awarded a loud ovation.
That’s all anyone needs to know.”
That is just awesome.
Aaron Meier - October 12, 2010 via mobile
Funny how things work...
The Braves were very close to acquiring Cody Ross from the Marlins at the deadline until Chris Coghlan tore up his knee in the shaving cream celebration. That immediately made Ross off limits. By the time Ross was available again, the Braves had already gotten Rick Ankiel.
Wonder what would have happened if the Coghlan injury never happened…
AnEternalEnigma - October 12, 2010
how did that make Ross unavailable? he wasn’t injured at all in that incident
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
The Marlins pulled him off the table...
They were playing .500 ball, thought it too early in the season to trade Ross without Coghlan there to play. A month later, they’ve not gained any ground and the injuries start to pile up, and he’s let go.
-C
cthabeerman - October 12, 2010
so you guys would have ended up having to part with farm talent to get ross at the deadline, then he’s pulled back, and ends up on our laps for free as a blocking move to SD… odd how baseball works sometimes.
giant4life83 - October 12, 2010
Maybe its for the best to lose at home like this to the Giants, because I had a terrible feeling that Philly would have creamed us in the NLCS. Call me crazy, but this seems like a better way to go out than having to watch Philly and their fans celebrate at Turner Field. Obviously winning the World Series is the best way to go out, but this seems like the second best option to me.
10-4 - October 12, 2010
Observations
Didn’t read the comments so the question here may have already been addressed: Has anyone else noticed that whenever we obtain a position player from either outside or inside the organization who has hit well or reasonably well with their previous club or level they turn into mediocre or worse at the plate here in Atlanta? There appears to be one common element in this scenario—-Terry Pendleton. What does he do to or for these guys? With the exception of the pitching, the final month and a half of this season looked like the team caved under pressure. I’ve played enough baseball to recognize that when a team chokes the hitting and fielding is where it shows, and sure enough…….
