It's Huddy time!

I just ran into Don Sutton at the Starbucks on Howell Mill, he is super pumped for today's game, and that got me extra super pumped for today's game. I'm ready to get this game on! In the meantime, here are the batter vs. pitcher matchpus for today's starters:

After the jump is today's Braves lineup and the stats for the Giants starters against Hudson.

Star-divide

Today's Braves lineup:

  1. Omar Infante, 3B
  2. Jason Heyward, RF
  3. Derrek Lee, 1B
  4. Brian McCann, C
  5. Matt Diaz, LF
  6. Alex Gonzalez, SS
  7. Brooks Cocnrad, 2B
  8. Rick Ankiel, CF
  9. Tim Hudson, P

While Diaz, the righty, is in there against Sanchez, the lefty, Matty has not had much success against him, striking out 6 of 10 times they have faced each other. Let's hope that trend doesn't continue, as it may have been more appropriate to start McLouth or even <shudder> Melky.

Hudson has faced the Giants twice this season, and each time he has pitched really well. Billy Wagner blew his first save of the season in a brilliant Hudson start out in San Fran in April, but Wags teamed up with Hudson on August 7th in Atlanta to shutout this Giants team -- a lineup that will be almost identical for today's game.

If he is to shut them out again, he'll have to combine with a different bullpen mate to do so, as the Braves will place Wagner on the disabled list and activate Takashi Saito to take his place.

Giants vs. Tim Hudson PA AB H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Pat Burrell 36 34 7 1 0 1 3 2 7 .206 .250 .324 .574
Aubrey Huff 25 22 7 1 0 0 3 2 2 .318 .360 .364 .724
Aaron Rowand 24 21 8 1 0 0 1 2 2 .381 .458 .429 .887
Freddy Sanchez 22 21 3 1 0 0 0 0 3 .143 .182 .190 .372
Cody Ross 15 15 2 0 0 0 0 0 3 .133 .133 .133 .267
Edgar Renteria 10 10 2 1 0 0 1 0 1 .200 .200 .300 .500
Pablo Sandoval 6 6 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 .167 .167 .167 .333
Juan Uribe 5 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 .000 .000 .000
Buster Posey 3 2 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 .500 .667 .500 1.167
Andres Torres 3 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 .000 .000 .000 .000
Nate Schierholtz 2 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 .000 .000 .000
Matt Cain 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 .000 .000 .000 .000
Mike Fontenot 1 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 1.000 1.000 1.000 2.000
Travis Ishikawa 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 .000 .000 .000

Total 155 145 32 5 0 1 10 6 22 .221 .265 .276 .540

Huddy has handled most of these guys pretty well. Will Bochy start Rowand?

im making a sign for the game today

Any suggestions?

"Heyward's Better"

Payback for those Giant fans chanting “Posey’s better” at the san fran games

Make is so.

Better Captain: Picard v. Kirk?

Kirk. Only he could bed green women in style.

Kirk

Kicks ass. Scores ass. What more do you want from a starship captain?

Plus, he’ll fight to give you a good price on a hotel.

Geovany Soto
Russell Martin
Buster Posey = Just another flash in the pan.

BMAC MVP

I liked the "Congrats to Posey on NL ROY Runner-Up" idea from another thread

Is the concern winning the World Series or the ROY?

For Posey...

It should be winning ROY… since the WS isn’t in his future… just sayin’

We're not skeered...

of your stupid beards!

Key for a Braves win today.....

….is patience. Sanchez has walked more hitters than any other NL pitcher this year. Give Diaz’s lack of success against Sanchez and the fact that he’s possibly the least patient hitter on the team, I’d rather see McLouth out there in LF.

But they are going to HAVE to make Sanchez work. He’s got deceptive stuff, but they really need to be patient today.

And get Hudson a 3-run lead....

10 ABs isn’t much of a sample for Diaz vs Sanchez. It makes more sense to rely on Matt’s general success vs LHP. Anyway McLouth has looked awful playing LF. Diaz at least has become an average fielder in recent years.

Yeah, but McLouth’s left field experience is a small sample size. TAKE THAT!

Someone got told?

I just want to see someone in there with some patience...

….at the bottom of the order.

Diaz
Gonzalez
Conrad
Ankiel

Possibly the 4 least patient players on the team…

I will try my hand at predicting the future of this game

for your entertainment… End score, Braves 4-Giants 2, Kimbrel gets the save and Heyward hits a 2 run double at some point.

Posey will do his part with a solo home run but we’ll deal with it and push through and win the game.

There you have it, now you don’t have to watch the game. :-)

It seems like

all the ATL sports celebrities hang around Howell Mill

Did this game get sold out?

I would like Heyward to start hitting... K thanks
I hope Brooks has his 'Sunday Magic'' cap on....

….and doesn’t make 7 errors.

Get Hudson some early runs and let him do his thing.

Cocnrad

The extra c isn’t a great sign…

Anyone have the Giants lineup by any chance?

Is Sanchez available? We need his ground balls today….

Torres cf, Sanchez 2b, Huff 1b, Posey c, Burrell lf, Uribe ss, Fontenot 3b, Ross rf, Sanchez p

Sandoval out and Fontenot in today
Giants lineup

Torres cf, Sanchez 2b, Huff 1b, Posey c, Burrell lf, Uribe ss, Fontenot 3b, Ross rf, Sanchez p

Count me in as one of the ones who wanted to see Glaus at 3B to start the game.

Infante
Heyward
Lee
McCann
Glaus
Ankiel
Gonzalez
McLouth

is a significantly deeper line-up IMO.

Can someone explain why Rick Ankiel is in the starting lineup against an LHP? Hitting a crucial HR in San Francisco doesn’t change the fact he’s awful at hitting lefties.

Also, I would like to see Tim Hudson hitting 8th.

Also, I’m hoping it’s “Sunday Red” day today.

He's the best option in CF....

Let’s see if you’re still saying that at the end of the game.

I'm just going with popular opinion....

Ankiel is better defensively, can’t hit. Melky is worse defensively, can’t hit. It really doesn’t make much of a difference.

I’ll agree with you on him being the best defensive option.

Haha

Trust me, I’ve said multiple times that he’s probably the worst hitter I’ve seen in years. Has the ugliest swing, at least…

Especially

As both Melky and McLouth have owned Sanchez (in limited ABs). Still, Ankiel’s seeing the ball well right now, I guess Bobby wants to go with the hot hand.

Ankiel

Is seeing the ball well I think he’s been making good contact and Melky is one ice cream sandwich away from becoming the truck itself

Not to start rosterbating and all...

…but if the Yankees go after one of Werth or Crawford, what are the chances they shop Gardner or Swisher? They’d have Werth/Crawford, Granderson, Swisher/Gardner, and I hear they’re going to try their best to re-sign Thames.

I’d really like to see Gardner in CF.

I'd prefer

Ellsbury, Rasmus or Kemp.

I’d go nuts for Rasmus or Kemp.

Dodgers are nuts if they let Kemp go.

Rumors

Are Kemp has a bad attitude and Wren covet Rasmus

If the Dodgers are going to let Kemp go because of a bad attitude, then they are complete hypocrites.

I wouldn’t mind having that bad attitude in the Braves lineup every day.

Escobar

Showed us that no matter how good you are a bad attitude will get you shipped out of town in Atlanta

For someone not as good.

And

A decent pitching prospect you can flip for Kyle Farnsworth… Everyone wins
/sarcasm

I don't see the Cardinals moving Rasmus, despite the rumors....

….and same for Kemp. And not sure if it’d be wise to trade for Ellsbury after a year littered with injuries.

I’m just afraid Gardner would be the next Melky – just a product of his surroundings.

There’s no doubt Gardner is superior defensively to Melky.

I’m not talking defensively – I mean offensively. Melky put up good numbers last year because of the stacked NYY line-up.

We have PLENTY of defensive options who have trouble with the bat. I would prefer a more proven offensive threat.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Gardner is a lefty. Next year, with Heyward, McCann, Freeman, Infante (who hits RHP better than LHP), possibly Hinske… That’s a lot of lefties…

Yeah, he's a lefty....

….but so are two of the three options you mentioned.

His home/away splits this year....

Home: .274, .384, .401, 20 SB

Away: .278, .381, .357, 27 SB

His power came from Yankee Stadium, but he’s been about the same player. Braves could really use a guy who’s speedy and can get on base at a pretty great clip.

Are you not listening or just purposefully ignoring my point?

I am NOT saying he is bad away from new Yankee Stadium.

Nor am I saying he is as bad as Melky as a defensive CF.

NOR am I saying he is not a fast runner.

I am saying he is one of the weaker spots in the line-up in NY, so opposing pitchers are more willing to attack his strikezone. In Atlanta, the line-up would have a completely different make-up.

How is it fair to lambaste him for being a weak link in the Yankee lineup?

Also, even if he put up Melky numbers at the plate, his defense alone makes him more valuable than Melky. Further, it is unlikely that he would not put up better numbers than Melky.

Also, you just said you worried he was a product of his surroundings.

His surroundings in the line-up, not geographcially.

I think stadium is a very big component of “surroundings”. Especially for a LH Yankee hitter.

But if you look at the context clues, when I said “he is more productive because of the stacked NYY line-up”, that should help clarify my point.

No, mate...

I’m merely posting his home/away splits. You just read too much into it.

I just assumed it was a comment in reply to my post.

You know, since you posted it that way.

But the difference is..

Gardner isn’t a HR guy, he’s a top of the order speed guy who bats around .300 and plays good D. Melky was a product of the new Yankee stadium laughing pad to RF, so maintaining his HR numbers wouldn’t happen at Turner. I think Gardners game is best suited for a NL team.

Why do you keep bringing up non-points?

I never mentioned anything about HRs…

And yes, Rasmus is a LHB, but he is actually pretty good against LHP – only a .08 BA drop from RHP.

Gardner drops over .30 points BA against LHP. We already have enough hitters who struggle against LHP. Goodness gracious, you do not read.

Ok, Mr. GM

No need to be so condescending.

Nvm

Kicking a dead horse. I do agree that we should still aim for someone much better though.

Ellsbury is my preference

If we were to get any of these non-power CFs I keep hearing about, I really think Ellsbury would be the best. If we had that kind of speed at the top of the line-up, imagine what Freddi Gonzalez would do with it… He loved using Hanley’s speed… It would mean good things for run production… as long as we stopped playing LOBster ball…

Furthermore, we add another guy who can get on base consistently in addition to Omar, Prado, Chipper, Heyward, and McCann.

Wagner out of playoffs; Saito takes roster spot

Very sad to hear this… Wags has been a trooper all year. :( don’t know how to link it but it’s on CBS…

If Saito’s shoulder is okay to go (and I assume it is), we’re adding a very big piece to the puzzle.

Sucks

for Wags though… he wanted to get Bobby there and now he has to watch… I could not imagine how he feels… and Saito is no Wags… I’m sorry. I really pray and hope that Bobby doesn’t turn to Farnsworthless to try to save games for us. If he does, I will get in a plane, cross the pond, buy a foam bat, and beat him senseless…

My guess is that Kimbrel and Venters will get the workload for Wags, and having Saito (another guy who can close) gives us another great option.

Saito was very, very good this year. If he can replicate that, our bullpen hasn’t missed a step.

Agreed

but… Bobby has used Farnsy more than I ever expected… I know he likes his vets but geeeeeez… Everytime he comes into the game, i cringe and pray

Friday night was either Farnsworth or Martinez. Glad it was Farnsworth.

Again... agreed...

However, why are either of them on our playoff roster… ugh… couldn’t we find mark wohlers or john rocker?

My question is, who takes their place? Proctor who has barely pitched above AAA this year? Guys who haven’t pitched in the majors at all? We just don’t have any other options with Eric Go Bragh hurt, JJ hurt, and Medlen hurt.

Were it not for the injuries, Farnsworth would not have been in the package with Ankiel, and Martinez would not have spent a good portion of the year here.

I'm surprised

Martinez got as large of a cup of coffee as he did. I don’t think he inspired confidence in anyone and for a while there, I thought Bobby carried him just to prove how much he hates using the back end of his bullpen… At this rate, I have a strong feeling we shouldn’t count on Venters next year (Everyday Johnny will be fragile after his workload this year). However, for this playoff run, I’d love to use some of our young blood… granted they are not playoff (or in most cases MLB) proven, I’m sure we have one or two farmhands who would have been better than those two… and I’m partially serious about digging up Wohlers or Rocker… There has to be some rule about being able to use a FA who has been on a previous playoff team for you… I bet they’d be better than Martinez or Farnsy…

What a shitty weekend so far.

I need a win today.

On another note, I really dislike Buck Martinez. His voice is annoying, he adds almost nothing to the analysis, and does nothing worthwhile.

Thankfully his work for the year is over as soon as the Rangers/Rays series is.

Texas trying to choke their 2 game lead away here.

Not that Tampa is a poor team, but jeez.

Well...

he was a dang sight better than Rob Dibble on the morning drive show on MLB radio on XM.

Still, he's Vin Scully compared to Tim McCarver.

Vin Scully and Tim McCarver should never be in the same sentence. It’s like having Jamie Kotsay and Rosie O’Donnell together.

Agreed entirely.

Oh Jamie Kotsay, how we miss thee.

Upton is a postseason hitter

2 hours.

Saito to replace Wags

Thoughts?

We had to do it.

More of: anyone surprised it’s Saito and not JJ/EOF/Proctor? Personally, I’m not, but I could see justification for them

JJ doesn’t have relief experience and EOF is still having vision problems. I guess Proctor, but Saito is much better if he’s healthy…and the Braves say he’s healthy.

Haha

I just looked out the window(I live in a very ‘country’ part of Gainesville, FL) and seen a 300lbs red neck riding the tiniest scooter I’ve ever seen. That’s a pretty decent sign that I’m gonna have to move pretty soon….

Saving on gasoline by riding that scooter to the drive thru at Dairy Queen!

Baby Mama’s gotta get her some Blizzard.

I have one TV and 2 games to watch, Braves and Cowboys

Any suggestions of how I can make this work???

DVR.

Short that, then Braves.

Cowboys season ain’t happening.

Watch the Braves game. It’s infinitely more important.

if we wnat to get on base...

bunt it toward third… sandoval cant field that AND throw to first in time to get guys out like heyward or infante.
