I guess turnabout is fair play, and the Braves did steal Greg Maddux from the Cubs in 1993, so it is only appropriate that the Cubs steal him back this year to be a special assistant to the General Manager, a move that was just announced. That role could mean a myriad of things, but what it generally means is that a person is being groomed for bigger and better things. Let's just hope Mad Dog doesn't learn too much from Jim Hendry.
The Braves were apparently having some conversations at the Winter Meetings with Greg about joining the Braves front office in a similar capacity. As tied to the Braves as Maddux is, he may have more recent relations with the folks in the Cubs front office and may be more familiar with them, thus his choice of Chicago over Atlanta.
Apparently the Braves were also having similar conversations with Tom Glavine.

Maybe it was like last year
When Maddog took a position with the Padres – “They asked first.” Maybe the Braves should think about doing that next year…

I'd assume their spring training in AZ...
and closer to his Las Vegas home also has an impact on the decision.

I hope this wont interfere with my future plans. 5 years from now I was hoping to have Greg as our pitching coach, Chipper batting coach, with…..I dunno, Eddie Perez at the helm.
!Vive la Francoeur! - January 11, 2010
greg as pitching coach, chipper as hitting coach and smoltzy managing, can you imagine him pulling a bobby? we’d have umpires getting knocked out left and right

I would love to see that combo. With Glavine in there some where.

+1 for Perez!!!

i think id rather see smoltz join the front office than glavine, he did stay with us the longest.
but, i honestly think id rather have chipper in the front office over those 3, at least for now
but it would be nice if mad dog was to become out pitching coach, ala his brother mike, he’s done wonderful things with texas’s pitching staff, it’d be nice to see what mad dog could do with the braves pitching staff

I like Chipper and Smoltz but I don’t think that their talents are best used in the front office. Both are coaching and managing material. Maddux and Glavine both have the brains and experience (Glavine was/is a union representative) to become General Managers.

Chipper
as the Special Assistant Buckmaster/Redneck.

I thought Maddux had agreed to come down to Spring Training to be a special coach this year. I guess thats scrapped. F HIM AND HIS FAMILY

Unlike that of Big Mac...
…I’m not expecting a clamoring for a big press release about Mad dog’s history of steroid use. Then again, chicks dig the long ball…

Sigh.
Damn.
Lizziebeth - January 11, 2010
I think Maddux & Glavine should become our new hitting coaches. Remember this?

That’s too bad. I really hoped that Maddux would come back and work for the Braves.
I think Tom Glavine would make a good hitting coach, but Glavine seems the type to want to manage or be an executive for the players union.

Greg Maddux could come out as a steroid injected fetus eating child molester, and I’d still love him.

maybe because of this?

I had forgotten about that ad. When Maddux and Glavine go into the Hall of Fame together, that video should be played.
Mr. Glavine #47 - January 15, 2010
Come on, Greg. You’re shooting blanks with the Cubbies…lol
Chief Noc-A-Homa - January 11, 2010
Whew! When I first read the headline, I thought it meant he was going into the HOF as a Cub. Oh man, that would suck…
Bravely going forward - January 12, 2010
That would suck...
But he does seem to have a hard on for those pin stripes
HansonManCrush - January 12, 2010 via mobile
sheesh
this is annoying we can’t make good moves because most players hate the south and want nothing to do with us so they go anywhere but here even the AL central
