John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus runs down his list of still-available free agents, saying this about our former first sacker:
[Adam LaRoche] supposedly turned down a two-year, $17 million offer from the Giants this past week, and maybe it is a sign that he would rather spend the rest of his time hunting deer on his Kansas ranch.
Ouch. Though it does look like teams wanting LaRoche's services are dwindling. Perrotto says it may be down to just the Orioles. Of course, Adam's never been one to rush into anything. This free agent process seems to be following his personality to a tee.

Go hunting or live in San Francisco?
I think he’s making the smart choice.
ATLandUNC - January 10, 2010
Hey, San Fran’s a pretty awesome city.
gondeee - January 10, 2010
If you like smelling your own farts. ;^)P
Chief Noc-A-Homa - January 10, 2010
even if san fran did suck
id live there for 17 mil.
Doghnut - January 10, 2010
can't be worse than Pittsburgh...
I hope he gets a good deal soon, and would like to see him in Baltimore.
Mr. Sanchez - January 10, 2010
I love San Fran, but I don’t want to be there when it breaks off.

Like many other FA thinking...
They can demand what the want because they view themselves as the best 1B option on the market. Now in the last 2 years FA market has shown that if you don’t take early offers than you basically screw yourself longer that you think you can wait it out…..Laroche will probably settle for a either a 1yr deal or anyone still think that can get him on the cheap….I say he should have keep hunting because he doesn’t like SF/west coast
Hanson-Ace - January 10, 2010
Roachy should have signed this deal ~
Simply put Roachy needs to realize that he isn’t going to get top dollar free agent money even though he is in the prime of his career due to his first half struggles that he has every season. He was a great second half pickup for us and he got us away from the offense-less Kotchman but Roachy you are not worth a three year deal and over 20+ million dollars.
I would have jumped at the the chance to make $17million over two seasons plus the Giants are going to be bad anyway so they may have traded you regardless.
Only time will tell where Roachy will land, I just hope Glaus can stay healthy along with alot of our key starters.
Go Braves.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - January 10, 2010
LOL.
The Giants are going to be bad anyway. Thank you for your eloquent and well-researched point.
MichaelProcton - January 14, 2010
i still wish we brought him back…..regardless of his 1st half struggles…. i guess we couldn’t have afforded him though…..
lemke2blauser2bream - January 10, 2010
If he's turning down contract offers like that...
…no, we could not have afforded him.

Can you reccomend a book or website for me?
Hi guys, big braves/baseball fan, trying to learn more about the statistics/moneyball side of things (read moneyball, liked it, want to read about specifics though now). Can anyone reccomend me a book or website to read to learn about all the modern stats and defensive metrics etc? Thanks in advance.
fizzbot - January 10, 2010
personally i like fangraphs and yahoo is currently running a series of articles that explains stats…there are several other good places, but ill let one of the stat heads chime in for that :)
Doghnut - January 10, 2010
Amazin Avenue just did a primer piece with some great links.
You can find it here. Hope that helps.
Stephen Schmidt - January 10, 2010
Amazin avenue looks good, man I hate going to a Mets site though….
fizzbot - January 10, 2010
Just don’t make eye contact…they will try to convince you that Kelvim Escobar will win the Cy Young somehow…
bwellnjonesco - January 11, 2010
that made me smile.
Lizziebeth - January 11, 2010
How is Escobar going to win the Cy Young?
Ollie’s name is already being engraved on it.
Stephen Schmidt - January 11, 2010
Any other big sites I can read regularly I just read all that stuff you linked, thanks! OPS+ is a cool one..
fizzbot - January 10, 2010

San Fran just signed Huff, better hope Baltimore doesn’t sign Delgado Mr. LaRoche.
Adamal24 - January 11, 2010
He would be SO screwed. I like Roachie and I’ve been hoping he’d land on his feet, but if he doesn’t sign on the dotted line somewhere pronto he’s going to get forced into playing for a mil or two. Yeesh.
J-Freak - January 11, 2010
There is still the Mets job open.
Between Delgado and LaRoche, I think they’ll end up in Baltimore and New York, I just don’t know which one goes where.
cavebird - January 11, 2010
I grew up there, SF isn’t all bad. The cities around it are really nice. So he wouldn’t even have to live in the city. I think he’s be a good fit on that team.
FitzFan - January 11, 2010
Called right
I know you are from there…because you called it “The City”….I was stationed there in the early eighties…and when Journy’s song “lights” came out…I knew what they meant by City by the bay!!!!…
but yes he would not have live there and I would not if I was him…San Jose or Santa Clara/Sunnyvale is nice place to live
bravestatoo - January 11, 2010
Actually...
“Lights” was supposed to be about Los Angeles, but they didn’t like the ring of “sun shines on EllAaaa.”
MichaelProcton - January 15, 2010
It seems to me that if a player doesn’t sign by January 1 or thereabouts, he has pretty much given up on his best offers.
Which makes me think that the Braves could still sign someone like Jonny Gomes if they can get him for what he made in 2008—or less ($1.275 million). How come he is not with a team yet? And why hasn’t he played more?? Anyway… Not that he would be a huge upgrade over what we have now but he could hit 30 homers with more ABs.
Back to LaRoche… San Francisco isn’t unlike any other big city. 1—You can’t hunt in any city limits as far as I know, and 2) You have to drive outside the city to get to those hunting grounds. So what is wrong with SF?
proeye - January 11, 2010
Actually it looks like Gomes made only $775,000 last year. $600,000 base + $100,000 bonus + $75,000 minor league contract.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4737551
Is this guy a terrible fielder?? Why was he let go by the Reds??
proeye - January 11, 2010
The reasons Gomes is unsigned are...
1. He is an absolutely abysmal fielder. He is essentially a DH and there are plenty of DH candidates out there and not that many jobs available.
2. He has horrible contact issues and tends to slump at times because of it, although he has good patience and good power.
cavebird - January 11, 2010
Pardon my french
He Fuked up !!
