Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 9/7

Tonight is the final night of the regular season for all the full season leagues! Gwinnett is the only team continuing into the post season from here with the playoffs starting on Wednesday. Once those are done we will see if Jason Heyward gets the call for some Major League seasoning.

Charlotte 4, Gwinnett 7

M. Young 1-5 HR(1)
J. Heyward 2-4 RBI, BB
B. Barton 3-4 2B, RBI, SB(17)

Gwinnett finishes the season with an 81-63 record 2 games out of first place in the division but winning the wild card. They will play Scranton on Wednesday to start a 5 game series. Jason Heyward appears to be unfazed by AAA so far though he doesn't have an XBH in his 11 ABs. I wouldn't be surprised to see him catch fire in the playoffs and lead this team to some glory!

Mississippi 5, Carolina 0

J. Owings 2-4 HR(1), 2 RBI, K, 2 CS(3)
B. Hicks 2-4 2B, HR(10)

Mississippi finishes the second half of their season with a record of 34-34. I am a little surprised by that, but they have had the best starting pitching the league despite their offensive struggles. For the year they finish 65-73, which would be good for 4th in the division. (Interestingly, if they had been in the North Division they would have had the second best record on the season.) Jon Owings is a guy I always had hopes for but he was terrible in a return to the Pelicans this season after being pretty darn good last season. I don't know if he was injured or what to start the year, but he has been one of the more disappointing players for me.

Winston-Salem 7, Myrtle Beach 2

D. Linares 2-5 HR(15), 2 RBI
J. Sucre 2-4 K
R. Gress 2-4 2B, 2K

Myrtle Beach finishes the second half of the season 28-41, which was the second worst record in the league. I was going to talk a little here about how these guys declined and Mississippi improved when Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman were promoted, but the Pelicans were actually worse while those two were there. I have to admit, for Heyward and Freeman to produce the way they did while on such a bad team is pretty impressive indeed.

Rome 5, Augusta 6

L. Sumoza 3-4 2B, K
M. Kramer 2-4 RBI
B. Schlehuber 1-4 2B, 3 RBI
J. Teheran 3.1IP 10H 5R 0BB 0K

Rome finishes the second half of the season with a 31-38 record and 66-73 for the year. Not bad, and with all the youth on the squad I am fairly impressed with their performance on the whole. (One interesting side note is that Asheville was easily the worst team in the division in the first half and easily best team in the second half. That is some improvement!) It does not look like Julio Teheran showed up with his best stuff on this night. He has laid a couple of rotten eggs in Rome, which just seem like wild aberrations compared to his other outings. I don't know what to make of it.

Seriously, Thanks a bunch dude. Loved reading these most every night and it was great being able to keep tabs on our minor league teams like this. Thank you for all the hard work.

Gwinette braves

Heyword is indeed a great prospect and hopefully he will help lead gwinette to a championship however he was promoted to a team already playoff bound and his arrival should not overshadow the players that have gotten them here. Thanks for the continued minor league updates

In addition to Gwinnett, I’m very selfishly rooting for Durham in the first round too, so that I can head down there and watch the G-Braves in the finals. So hopefully these guys get it done in the first round and make it happen for me. I’m not ready to be done watching baseball yet.

Heyward will not be called up this year

Heyward won’t be called up this year. The official reason will be that the Braves don’t want to rush him. The real reason is that a call up would start his arbitration clock ticking. He won’t be in Atlanta any earlier than late May of next year for that reason.

What size roster will Gwinnett have for the playoffs?...

I assume 25? Just curious if the front office will do any more shuffling to help strengthen that club with the other seasons over, like maybe bring up Hicks or Linares to replace a struggling Van Pope at 3rd, maybe a 3rd C or an arm or two like Ortegano, Gearin, Gustafson, or Gunderson to bolster their staff.
