I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer this morning, but I'm also not going to jump on the Believe bandwagon of hype just yet. The counter slogan to "Believe" was written in a comment in yesterday's game recap and read, "I remain skeptical, do you?" That slogan got me thinking, and skeptical is really how I feel. After all, I've watched this team all year, I know about the ups and down.
I think it's great that we're branding this surge with the Believe slogan, but I remain skeptical and realistic about Atlanta's playoff chances. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to watch every minute of it and root like hell for the Braves to win every game, but they will have to win every game, and even then there's still a strong possibility that they won't make it.
As a marketing tool, though, you have to like this whole Believe campaign. "Print a sign, then come to the game and wave it." That's pretty genius from a marketing department that has the incredibly tough task of trying to convince Atlantans to come to a baseball game during football season.
I would give them even more credit it they hadn't put a little TM Trademark logo next to the "Believe" -- that makes it kind of hollow. Did they have to do that? To me that reads, "let's have a grassroots 'Believe' movement, but let's also retain the rights to any merchandise that we can sell which happens to coincide with it." Oh well, I suppose a Believe sign is just the foam tomahawk of this generation.
Anyway, this is a perfect opportunity for a poll.

Just win, baby! The rest will take care of itself!

ahhh sucks i have to work and can't watch any games
but I feel skeptical as well…If we actually played the Rockies I’d feel much better…but even if we win out..we might still be out
Go Braves

and on the Rox blog they said their believe sign was better..psh..

Jeez, what a buzzkill you are Gondee.
I’m going to use what is most likely a conglomerate of different movie lines: “If you don’t step out on that ledge, then you don’t risk getting your heart broken. And thats a sad way to live.”
I applaud the Braves for doing this. Not only for coming up with a snazzy logo, but for not seeking a profit out of it. Now if i show up at Turner Field tonight and they’re selling “Believe” shirts for $25, then i’ll be disapointed.
10-4 - September 29, 2009
He's not being a buzz kill....
he’s just vocalizing what most are thinking but not willing to admit. I also have my doubts. Not so much about the Rockies losing at least two, but with us running the table. It’s too easy to think that we will win out, which is pretty much what we have to do unless the Rox go 3-3 or completely lay an egg(fingers crossed). I do believe in my heart that we can do it…but my head tells me to question it.

If we had capitalized more on the 11 walks issued last night, I might be buying tickets to Atlanta and trying to make a game. The way our offense refuses to manufacture runs and give away bases loaded situations frustrate the hell out of me. Thank goodness we have great pitching.
For the remainder, I’ll be here in NC, cheering and watching every last minute and hoping and praying they find a way to make the playoffs.
Don’t ask me my opinion of our chances once there, but just making it will be a HUGE shot in the confidence of our team and the fans who support them.
BELIEVE – It’s fun, it’s free and 0 calories :-)
NCChopper - September 29, 2009
nitpicking a bit..
considering the run we’ve been on…
what the hell else can they do? a win is a win and we’ll take em anyway we can get em
Hcgadawgs - September 29, 2009
I agree
we’ve been scoring at a good rate lately.
VivaLosBravos - September 29, 2009
I’m gladly drinking the Kool-Aid of “Believe!” like a lot of Braves fans are right now and will continue to do so until this season is over, which I personally hope ends with a WS ring.
But I can do it and be honest about the game I watched last night as well.
4 runs. First 2 were not the result of hits, 1 solo homer and 1 run via bases loaded walk.
We were given 11 walks by the Marlins. I just wish we would have done more with the opportunities given.
NCChopper - September 29, 2009
Let’s just say that we took 11 walks from them…it makes me feel better!
:)
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Sounds much better, I agree. :-)
NCChopper - September 29, 2009
Adam Dunn would have walked 11 times in that game alone…and it is all your fault that we do not have him!!!
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
We do not talk about the D word.

did you happen to notice my thoughts on football not being as great a TV sport as baseball?
I’m interested in what you think.
=)
Jareth Cutestory - September 29, 2009
I dont think criticizing the sport itself for the commercialization of it by the tv stations is a fair argument.
Football is a great tv sport because you can see most of the action, the action is virtually non-stop, and it is a fast, violent game that we as humans love. Even the non-football lovers here will watch a replay of a guy getting absolutely leveled in a football game.
The very fact that advertisers spend so much money on commercials and that the NFL can get away with showing so many commercials is evidence that football is a perfect TV sport.
If it weren’t a good tv sport, people wouldn’t watch it. If people didn’t watch it, companies wouldn’t advertise.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
damnit. I had a big long post to respond to this and it magically disappeared (FAIL). so here we go again
Football for an educated fan is a horrible visual experience. There is a reason football players have 3 hours of film study a day. You can’t possible see everything that is happening in a single play with two eyes and the camera angles available. To properly view football you would probably need about 5 eyes that focus independently with about 5 screens. Usually a play ignored the secondary and WR until the ball is thrown. If the ball is not thrown I never get to see Riley Cooper bitch slap a silly DB (which saddens me.. I love me some Riley Cooper). The field is too big to get a close enough view to discern what is happening in every individual battle.
Baseball on the other hand is much easier to view because of the intricacies of the game. Essentially, baseball is about the battle between pitcher and batter, this is easy to capture. Whereas in football each individual battle is important and the QB is battling all 11 defenders essentially.
Even if you want to be really educated in baseball and watch the defenders move and where they are located in relation to different batters and different pitchers, you can usualyl ascertain this informaiton.
For these reason baseball is better for TV viewing, IMHO. The thing is Baseball is just as great in person. Whereas while football sucks on TV, it sucks even worse live, cause you can’t see shit ever. You almost never know where the ball is, and you rarely know what the call on the field is or are you able to get a good view of the cheerleaders. So football is drastically better on tv than live.
Justin everything you said is correct. The violent nature of football and the extended time between plays allows repeated viewings of Tebow pretending like he doesn’t have a spinal cord (too soon, honestly my heart dropped when it happened and i could only hope he was ok and I really dont like the Gators that much). Plus Football looks great in HD, so does baseball, but Football is better IMHO.
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
I wish more attention was paid to the lineman, those guys play their asses off and often get very little respect or acknowledgment.
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
nothing gets more more excited than a great block, especially a decleater on a free pickup… o wow… im gettign exciting thinking about it… this is why i love Riley Cooper… he is completely ambivalent to the idea tha WR are supposed to catch the ball. He is stuck in the 30s and thinks his job is to continually piss off various defenders by repeatedly knocking them on thier ass.
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
I don’t even know who the F*** Riley Cooper is!
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
I love baseball and football, and watch both, but who is Riley Cooper?
HEYJUDE - September 29, 2009
Riley Cooper is a person everyone should know… he is by far the best blockign WR in all of college football. he has impeccable hands and is supposedly one of the fastest players on the fastest team in the nation (the Gators).
he knocks a DB’s head off on a block at least once a game that you see (im guessing there is more but they never show it)
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
He’s still in college? That makes him even less meaningful.
cbwilk - September 29, 2009
how dare we not know the name of one of the mighty gators???
Doghnut - September 30, 2009
as i mentioned Im not a Gator fan…
Swo12bv - September 30, 2009
i was being sarcastic
Doghnut - September 30, 2009
i was not
:)
Swo12bv - September 30, 2009
I agree with all of that. In my post, I was referring more to the casual fans (the vast majority) as opposed to the intellectual ones that know the finer parts of football – like linemen.
Football is sexy because it is about the QB and the WRs. You can capture most of that on camera. That is why I think it is a better TV sport for the general audiences.
When I watch football, I have gotten to the point to where I focus about 99% of my attention on the battles in the trenches – amazing stuff goes on there!
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Like holding on every single play, which hardly ever gets called.
cbwilk - September 29, 2009
holding is a misnomer… it should be referred to as excessive holding.
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
Or tackling for most of them.
cbwilk - September 29, 2009
I'm with you on that!
If you can follow what goes on @ the line, it makes the game more enjoyable.
OOH, LOOK AT THAT BLOCK!

Jareth Cutestory - September 29, 2009
I have to admit
the first thing I thought of this morning was “man, it is going to be !@#$ hard for ATL to make the playoffs”
I think if they pull it off, it’s gonna be a 1-game playoff scenario. The Braves have to win out to make the playoffs. I don’t see the Rockies going 3-3 against two teams that don’t care if they win or lose.
It is going to be rough!
RehabReject - September 29, 2009
the dodgers may very well have to win to have home field. a sweep by the Pads would make them play a lot better in the final series though.
nuftjedi - September 29, 2009
Yeah, it’s different once the elation of last night wears of isn’t it? :P
bravos1984 - September 29, 2009
cautiously optimistic, would be how I would describe my feelings towards our chances
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
BELIEVE!!
why not. The Braves can’t lose even if they wanted to. They were losing to the Nats pretty much throughout the whole game and won on Sunday. Yesterday we had only 3 hits and managed to score 4 runs and shut out the Marlins. This team is clicking and is playing it’s best baseball in the last 2 or 3 years. Our tougest task is tonight. The Marlins will send Josh Johnson to the mound. He’s been solid all year but I believe we beat him to the last time we faced him. If we win tonight and the Rockies lose, I live in NY and I will be booking a flight to ATL for the one game playoff Monday night baby.
AlRoBraves95 - September 29, 2009
Dear Debbie Downer,
Gondee, thanks for your work on this board. I really appreciate it. Your love for the Braves is notable. This is the first time in a bit where we can hinge on every at bat. Forget your fears. There were so many years that the Braves were the best team in baseball and did not win. This maybe the year we were not and did what other teams did before us. Go Braves period. Enjoy the ride. Finally, will the Brave fans in Atlanta get the heck off there butts and go to the game and root like heck……25K, 30K is ridicules…this team deserves a packed house win or lose.

Ah well....
Of course I believe. I’ve been believing from the first day of spring training, never stopped believing when everyone was sticking forks in them, will believe until they are mathematically eliminated. That’s what I do, and who I am. I’m not going to look for the negative, when the positive is so much better for my disposition.
I think, maybe, I’m going to be able to make it down to the ATL for tomorrow night’s game, if I get a bunch of work done today. I’ll probably regret it Thursday morning, when I have to go to work on a couple of hours sleep, but what the heck.
sddbaker - September 29, 2009
You may regret it Thursday, but you probably won’t afterwards.

I’ve given up on the Braves about 15 times this year. As recently as two weeks ago I thought the season was over for them. But now, I believe. This team is going to do it, I have complete and utter faith.
cbwilk - September 29, 2009
Boo. This is an unnecessary reality check Gondee. I think we all realize it is an outside shot, it is simple arithmatic.
The team has earned our support and faith in their ability over the last month. If the fanbase wants to get excited, lets go for it. I believe the team will play to the best of their ability, and whatever happens happens.
Sid Bream's Moustache - September 29, 2009
Stop. Don't. Stop Don't Stop Don't Stop
I must agree with your healthy skepticism. Healthy because it’s like a vaccination against a broken heart. But in spite of my skepticism, when I took the poll I had to say I believe. As a Braves fan, how can I not believe? I have to forgive them for breaking my heart all those other times. That’s the joy and beauty of being a fan, you believe with your heart even when your head says it’s foolish.
I’m going to enjoy these last few games, however many there are.
sincesixtysix - September 29, 2009
agreed
can’t be afraid of getting your heart broke. It’s what lets you know that you’re still alive. I believe, however, ever since they started that “Believe” marketing ploy I can’t get that Monkeys song “I’m a Believer” out of my head. I guess you got to take the good w/the bad. P.S. Congats to the Angels. Seeing how they honored Adenhart after clinching puts a lump in your throat. Beyond baseball.
adc62 - September 29, 2009
I updated the story...
…and added this paragraph:
“I would give them even more credit it they hadn’t put a little TM Trademark logo next to the “Believe” — that makes it kind of hollow. Did they have to do that? To me that reads, “let’s have a grassroots ‘Believe’ movement, but let’s also retain the rights to any merchandise that we can sell which happens to coincide with it.” Oh well, I suppose a Believe sign is just the foam tomahawk of this generation. "
I know, I know, I’m a terrible person. I have no idea why I’m being such a downer about this. Feel free not to “Believe” me.
gondeee - September 29, 2009
maybe the tomahawk is trademarked. Can you get something trademarked this quickly?
10-4 - September 29, 2009
Could I trademark the trademark symbol?
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
too late. I copyrighted it 3 years ago.
10-4 - September 29, 2009
I think I understand your point a bit better
I agree it does feel a little hollow the more corporate it gets, and I am not doing this for the marketing campaign.
But just because the accountants want to make to make some cheddar, doesn’t mean this wave of excitement isn’t authentic:
""I haven’t felt like this," said Peter Moylan, who set a franchise record with his 85th appearance with a scoreless eighth inning that preserved Jurrjens’ effort. “I haven’t had the nervousness and the adrenaline pumping from the first through the sixth inning. It’s crazy. This is the reason you play, I guess, and it’s awesome.” "
I’m pumped, and I feel like these boys are gonna play their asses off for us

Don’t stop believing

justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Ha ha. Nice one.
Yakker - September 29, 2009
It’s still sad that even with a 7 game streak, it still might not be enough to get people to come to the game. lol, what more can they do? Most people in the south just don’t get baseball. Seriously, they just respond, “It’s boring. Is there a football game on?”
Sure, there are fans; but not as many as you would hope to find.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
I really don’t think this is a North/South issue.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Most people in the south think baseball is boring, man. It’s true. All my friends updates on facebook are “Go Panthers!!!!” “Go (insert college football team here)”. etc.
It has nothing to do with North/South, really. It’s just that people around here are completely nuts about football these days.
People are like, “why is nobody coming to the games?” etc
This is why.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
People all across the country are like that. Football is more exciting than baseball – TV makes this true. Baseball is not a TV sport, just like soccer and hockey aren’t. Football is a great TV sport, and as a result, it has become the most popular sport in the country.
People think baseball is boring because when they see it on tv, they see a guy standing on a little hill and throwing a ball….then standing on the hill for a while and throwing the ball again.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Football is a shitty TV sport. There are more commericals and time-outs than actual game. I’ll watch highlites, but I just don’t buy it.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
You are crazy. Football is the perfect TV sport. Why do you think there are so many commercials??? It is because people watch it more than anything else.
I really don’t get your dislike of football.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
It’s the same thing over and over again. It gets way too repetative to me by the end of the 1st quarter. It’s like watching soccer (or futbol), which equally sucks in my opinion. It just puts me to sleep. I’m not going to lie. That’s just the truth for me.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
You are missing out on a ton then.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
I’ll take your word for it. Let me know what I miss. lol
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
I’m with you Chief, football isn’t that great, especially the NFL.
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
I agree with you, but……….who the hell are you?!
(good to see you again)
Lizziebeth - September 29, 2009
I’m just an eskimo with a love for the Braves!! Good to see you too!!
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
wait, wait, wait
If you don’t like football, that’s fine (who am i to judge?).
But:
I’m sorry, but baseball is the most repetitive sport. Watching a guy pitch for 3 hours is repetitive. Football is different on every play.
Doghnut - September 29, 2009
That’s what most people would say, sure.
Football is either passing, or running on every play, if I’m not mistaken. And the running plays usually are wastes of time.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
wow…have you ever even watched a football game?
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Yep. I’m sorry that it’s so hard to comprehend people not liking the game. That’s life.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
It's easy to comprehend someone not liking football..
but as he says, your reasoning lacks basis in reality.
Mr. Sanchez - September 29, 2009
Why is the sky blue?
How high is up?
Why does football put me to sleep?
I don’t know. Don’t really care either. Reality bites.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
not really comparable to what you said about football though. I am not trying to tell you that football doesn’t put you to sleep. I am telling you that football is not repetative, nor is it the same play over and over, nor is running the ball a waste of time.
If you don’t like football, fine. I am not saying you should..
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
So my reasoning is bogus; I apologize. Football is kind of like a real-life lullaby to me. Many, MANY, MANY people would say the same about baseball. To each his/her own.
That’s all I got, boss.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
"To each his/her own"
Amen. I personally love football and will watch a Hokie football game over a baseball game, but with the way the race is right now you better damn well bet that I’ll be devoting the lion’s share of the flicking to the baseball game.
soup du jour - September 29, 2009
Baseball has real drama. Not guys doing ridiculous dances in the end zone.
People can have retorts for me all day long, but I’m not going to like football just because everyone else likes it. It sucks.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
It’s fine if you don’t like it. But, at least make your criticism of it accurate.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
What’s innacurate?…….. Oh, I forgot the punt. Passing, running, and punting.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
“running is a waste of time”
Inacurrate
“it is the same thing over and over again”
Inaccurate
“It gets way too repetative "
Inaccurate
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
By that same logic, baseball is either throwing or hitting over and over again…
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Easy, man. These are all my opinions. If they differ from your own opinions, then watch 2 football games in a row to make up for my incompetence.
People are aloud to, simply, hate one sport and like another(.) If not, then oh well.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
Agreed. I just think that if you set your prejudice aside and actually try to watch the game and learn about it, you will have a completely different outlook.
Football is none of those things that you said it was.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
lmao. So I’m “prejudice” because I don’t like football? Very interesting logic there.
Wow. I’m 24, man. I’ve seen my share of football. I don’t need to “watch the game and learn about it.”
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
Based on your commentary, I would say that you know very little about it.
And yeah, you are prejudiced against football, just like I am prejudiced against the NBA.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
Well, lucky for me, I could give two shits about football. As long as you like it, that’s all that really matters.
Thanks for your input.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
I could write a thesis on why baseball is better than football, but I will leave it at this…baseball is the only sport in which you cannot punk out at the end of the game. Basketball you can foul the other team; in hockey you can skate around and ice the puck; in football you can run the ball and even kneel on it at the end. In baseball you need 27 outs to win the game there is no way around it, you have to throw a strike, you have to bring it.
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
In football, kneeling is a cop out, there is almost no way that the losing team can win, they don’t even have a chance the last 1 minute 45 seconds of the game. To me football would be 1000x better if the kneeling was outlawed and the team had to run actual plays, which would leave the door open for a turnover giving the team that is behind a chance…. Read
I guess my point is that the losing team doesn’t have the full 60 minutes to try and win the game, they have 57 minutes and some change, but in baseball they always have all 27 outs.
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
woah,...
don’t want the other team to kneel, make a play and hold on to the ball. Yes, baseball has 27 outs, but no one in baseball has ever thrown up a white flag and put in a bunch of scrubs to close out a game.
If that’s your argument, the reverse can be said that football at least finishes games quickly when the outcome is determined, baseball on the other hand drags things out for another hour even if the outcome is decided (and the winning % of teams down ten runs with 3 innings left can’t be any better than teams down 20+ points in football or basketball in the closing minutes).
Can we just say both sports have their fans, and leave it at that?
Mr. Sanchez - September 29, 2009
You are correct, that is yet another gripe I have about the game. The winning team can effectively shorten the game by running the ball. In baseball you cannot do that, well I guess you can if you have a killer bullpen. Regard
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
Weird...
Regardless, you have to get every one of those outs to win the game.
But now I am done, there are football fans and baseball fans, and some people like both!
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
And regardless,...
you have to keep snapping a football until the clock has ticked down to 0:00 to win a football game. Not sure how one being measured by outs and the other uses a clock really matters. Blowouts are blowouts, and close games are close game. Each one plays by their own individually beautiful set of rules.
Mr. Sanchez - September 29, 2009
In my opinion, the fact that one is measured by outs and the other uses a clock really does matter...
It is the fact that baseball is not measured by time that you have to make the other guy swing, in football, measured by time you can milk the clock and snap and kneel on it for the last two minutes.
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
Jeez, again, posted before I can finish writing. It was supposed to say,
“in football, because it is measured by time you can milk the clock and snap and kneel on the bacll for the last two minutes.”
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
BALL, DAMN IT. Is anybody else having problems with the website?

mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
like I said...
each plays by their own beautiful, individual and independent set of rules.
Mr. Sanchez - September 29, 2009
so instead the qb would just snap it and fall down? the kneel is to prevent injuries and cheap shots
bpk228480 - September 29, 2009
No. Just throw a pass or have the running back run the ball.
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
cause I'm sure every team...
up 8+ runs in the top of the 9th is swinging like their down 1 in game 7 of the Series.
Mr. Sanchez - September 29, 2009
I like the way this eskimo thinks.
Lizziebeth - September 29, 2009
nobody is debating that baseball is better or worse than football.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
yeah. no debate there. baseball is totally better.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
Oh I agree, my bad, I guess I just stated it that way because you wanted a legitimate gripe against footbal and that is mine.

Hcgadawgs - September 29, 2009
lmao
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
Dude, the truth is right in front of you, but you can’t see it. If the Rockies, Nats, and Twins can fill up the house each night, why can’t the Braves?
a) alot of baseball fans in the south sold out to other teams after growing sour on the Braves
b) the rest never liked baseball to begin with, and will never give it a chance
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
14 years of domination has a lot to do with it, no doubt. But, it isn’t a “southern thing.” When was the last time that the Royals sold out a game? What about the Jays?
It is a cultural thing.
Either that, or Atlantians just suck.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
………..Football is the “cool thing” in the south. I’m sure it’s the cool thing in other parts of the country as well, but here, it’s the thing that everyone talks about 24/7. Nobody talks about the Braves. lol.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
As I was walking around the bowling alley Sunday evening
getting ready for league, I was wearing my Maddux Braves shirt. I was elated that we had just swept the Nats. 2.5 back. pumped. A good friend of mine looks at me and says, “you know it’s football season now, right?”
I reply, “Its still baseball season, too.”
“Who cares?”
That’s what most people, unfortunately, think about baseball down here (south Mississippi).
I CARE!
Jareth Cutestory - September 29, 2009
Interesting……….
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
I blame TBS
Well, not really, blame, but my theory is that the Braves, by virtue of the SuperStation beaming across the country for most of the 80s and 90s, created a lot of Braves fans all across the country, and especially all through the South.
Quick poll, how many of the regular posters on this board actually live in metro Atlanta? I know Roy does, but not many of the rest of us, I don’t think. We have NC, SC, VA, NY, CA and probably others all represented, but there’s really just no way we can pick up and get to games as easily as people who live in Denver or Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Yakker - September 29, 2009
Hmm.
I guess I’m still a regular poster. Or do I go to too many games (can’t post while I’m at the game)?!! Anyway, I’m here in metro Atlanta, and I go to roughly 30-40.
(This part is not directed at Yakker, I’m just following through on the topic).
I’m more than ready for any of the attendance bitchers (the ones who lump all Atlantans together) to pay my way so I can quit my job and go to all of them. Yeah, that’d be sweet! As it is, I work ~45 hrs a week, volunteer ~20 hrs a month and drive 300mi round trip to care for my 90 year old grandparents at least 2 weekends a mo. (sometimes 3). I’m not telling this because I want everyone to go “aww, how kind”, I’m saying that all of us are in various stages of life; some of us have circumstances we never even saw coming that will keep us from doing what we’d really like to do. And sometimes there ARE more important things, like this Sat. when I’m going to help the Hudsons raise money for cystic fibrosis research, specifically Team Colin. It may make me late to the game, now that they’ve changed game time to 4:00. But guess what? Colin is 2 years old and currently not expected to live past his 16th birthday (life expectancy for cystic fibrosis patients). Which is more important – going to the game, or helping raise money for this child’s medical expenses and research to possibly lengthen his time on earth?
This attendance bitching has been beaten ad nauseam here, and I guess it wouldn’t be so bad if I had seen some props given to the people who are able to rearrange their lives and show up. For, if you can’t appreciate what you do have, no matter how much you get, it will never be enough.
steps down off the soapbox…
Lizziebeth - September 29, 2009
I’d absolutely consider you a regular poster, I just didn’t realize you lived in Atlanta!
Yakker - September 29, 2009
Lizziebeth
I love, admire and appreciate people like yourself…..You get it….Kudos to you and the Huddy’s in this world :)
HEYJUDE - September 29, 2009
the reason the Twins sell out is because of its location (specifically that they have a monopoly on a 5-6 state area. The same is true of Colorado… and too my knowledge the Nats don’t ever sell out
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
well there the unfortunate one’s thats gonna miss this amazing run..don’t feel sorry for their ignorant asses one bit
Hcgadawgs - September 29, 2009
I'm not here to argue baseball > football,
even though I believe this to be true (I happen to like football okay). My argument is that football is a great TV sport. It may be great to some just because we can’t imagine a one-hour land acquisition game lasting any less than 3 hours. However, they INSERT TV timeouts into these games, which already have multiple timeouts (3 team timeouts, challenges, injury timeouts, etc)!
Baseball is the PERFECT media sport (TV & radio) because it has built-in 2-3 minute breaks between EACH half inning. It is, effortlessly, a perfect TV sport. Football had to work at it, and we just expect it now.
In my opinion.
Jareth Cutestory - September 29, 2009
correction: my argument is that football is NOT, inherently, a great TV sport.
Jareth Cutestory - September 29, 2009
I will agree that football is a great TV sport, in the sense that it only happens once a week. It’s like an episode of Gilmore Girls, I only have to get excited about it once a week and then can spend the rest of the week worrying about other stuff. That’s why football is so popular, we all have low attention spans. Baseball happens every day and with our microwave attention spans, people just can’t handle it.
cbwilk - September 29, 2009
agreed.
10-4 - September 29, 2009
THIS..
although the physical nature of the two games also contributes to one being able to be played every day, and the other about once a week (then again, if you count practice it gets up to 2-4 times per week where you are really hitting full speed).
Mr. Sanchez - September 29, 2009
Great argument! I will have to use that one, “the common man (i.e. football fans) does not have the intelligence or patience to follow a season of baseball.”
P.S. I wish Gilmore Girls was on everyday!
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
I think it is actually, I just can’t handle that much Alexis Bledel without going into a happy coma.
cbwilk - September 29, 2009
lol
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
Has anybody ever noticed that the people appear to speak in fast motion on Gilmore Girls…….lol, I watch it every now and then.
But theriouthly, they never pause in-between sentences. It makes me dizzy.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
I like it! Witty banter!
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
So y'all like the Gilmore Girls?...
must say, I’ve never seen more than 10 consecutive seconds of it. I guess that explains the football hate.
Mr. Sanchez - September 29, 2009
That tv show is undoubtedly better than 98% of the crap on tv now. One of the most well written shows of all time
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
They went to a Yale football game on the show one time.
cbwilk - September 29, 2009
LOL…
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
Well, that’s important. Lets face it, not many people have the time to devote 12-18 hours watching baseball a week. Even if they only watch 1 game a week, they can put off the current game and say ‘eh, there will be one tomorrow.’ Football games, with their much smaller amount, inherently are more important than an individual baseball game.
soup du jour - September 29, 2009
What are the vegas odds right now of us making that 1 game playoff? Anyone? I have no idea how to find this out I just tried googling it and got lost in numbers for 30 minutes…
fizzbot - September 29, 2009
shit, the odds don’t matter anymore…im sure they werent lookin too good 20 games ago and look where we are
Hcgadawgs - September 29, 2009
Not sure about Vegas...
but ELO gives us a 26% chance to win the Wild Card. If you consider the actual playoff game a toss-up, they’d estimate a 52% chance at forcing it.
VivaLosBravos - September 29, 2009
Hey
John Kruk says were gonna win it and thats all that matters! ha. pencil us in!

soup du jour - September 29, 2009
holy shit, can you imagine the electricity in the Ted if were still this close (maybe even closer) for the final 2 or 3 games of the season. it all comes down to this last homestand. you couldn’t ask for a better finish as a sports fan, this is what its about! you’d be an idiot not to be there! OUR braves might pull off one of the biggest comebacks in sports HISTORY! damn, i cant wait
WERE COMIN’ ROX, don’t just believe that, KNOW THAT!
Hcgadawgs - September 29, 2009
YA MOTHER FUCKERSSSS HERE WE GO BABY BRAVOSSSSSS!!!
fizzbot - September 29, 2009
I say we just let out our inner homer if only for one week, we have suffered for so long, it feels good to believe and be a total homer, swear words and drinking included!
fizzbot - September 29, 2009
“we have suffered for so long”
wow. its interesting how a fanbase loses its grip on reality. We haven’t made the playoffs in 3 years (we’ve had one losing season in the past like 17 years or something. The Royals have suffered for a logn time. The Pirates, the Reds, The Orioles even. The Braves haven’t suffered at all. We had one bad season preceeded by two average seasons.Pirates fans would probably kill for a .500 season at this point
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
Yeah, but we had to watch Jeff Francoeur.
justincredubil02 - September 29, 2009
+1 Nice
VivaLosBravos - September 29, 2009
Hey, I believe, as does everyone else on this board, that the Braves can do it. I’m just a little disappointed that most of Atlanta couldn’t give two shits about it, and even more disappointed that the front office has to try to generate the excitement.
John Holton - September 29, 2009
*see above for answers that some refuse to accept
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
yep, and if we happen to win the WS im willing to bet anything EVERYBODY will jump on the bandwagon and call themselves “so called” braves fans again
Hcgadawgs - September 29, 2009
then, and only then.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
that happens in every sport to every team
Doghnut - September 29, 2009
then we’ll lose a couple series the next season and be filling 20,000 seats again in a matter of a month

appreciate your fanhood though
adc62 - September 29, 2009
one game playoff??
could someone give the scenario of this? I’m just not sure, but if we and the Rox are tied at the end of the season for the WC, then we play one game to determine? When and where would this be? I thought someone else posted that it would be at home but why?
traphicg - September 29, 2009
1st tiebreaker is head to head, but they are even at 4 wins each. The 2nd tiebreaker is division record, which gives the Braves the advantage.

10-4 - September 29, 2009

mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
Yeah...
this place is acting a little strange today. Maybe it’s due to the huge display of negativity in the top of the front page headline.
sddbaker - September 29, 2009
Thank you...
I just want to say “Thank You” to all my fellow Braves fans and/or Atlantans who have been able to come, and will be coming to the games. You’re awesome, unless you’re the screaming idiot drunk who always seems to stand next to me near the bullpen (just stop, would ‘ya?). Then again, if you can’t come to the Ted, I understand and don’t mind so much because then I get to move closer to the field and get better pictures. ;)
Oh, and a HUGE, HUGE thanks to all the ushers, security, janitorial staff, concession personnel…basically everyone who works at the Ted. Yes, these people are paid, but not much and for many it’s a 2nd job. Imagine their lives, especially all the rain delay games where they only had a few hours of sleep before going to their other job. Yet they come back year after year and are some of the most accommodating, pleasant people I know.
Anyway, without you and your smiling faces, this enormously fun part of my life would not be possible. Thank you so much.
Love, Lizziebeth

1992 Pirates
This whole “believe” thing reminds me of the 1992 Pirates. Their fans had signs that all read “We Believe” during the end of that series. The Pirates didn’t win and they haven’t won anything since.
mdhenshaw - September 29, 2009
wow, there is negativity and then there is this
Swo12bv - September 29, 2009
just maybe
Their consequent failures had more to do with chronic organizational incompetence than an optimistic campaign.
VivaLosBravos - September 29, 2009
haha, i’m not blaming the pirates downturn on the sign. it’s just that every time i see fans for a team sporting the “believe” campaign that’s the memory I have.
mdhenshaw - September 29, 2009
Braves should only be a game back
The catch that wasn’t in colorado. Clearly shows that ball hitting the ground. Wish they had replay on catches if they did braves would only be a game back. Cards would of won that game and took 2 out of 3. Oh well i hope it doesn’t come back to bite the braves.
Richshuturmouth - September 29, 2009
Just put that on our “should have been” list.
We’re still taking the WC.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
(taps table impatiently)
Is it game time yet? :-\
bravos1984 - September 29, 2009
No rain forecasted in the ATL, and RR (retractable roof) in Wisconsin. I’ll be glued to that tv with bells on. 8 )P
And the 4 or 5 times throughout this season when ESPN did a cover story on the Bravos, these headlines are used repeatedly…..“Home of the Brave,” and “Brave New World,”…………….meh.
How ’bout, Return of the Braves
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
I’m pretty sure the Rockies game is in Colorado though.
sleezer1788 - September 29, 2009
………ewww
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
Maybe, but I could see Fielder and Braun really teeing off there. The pitcher they are throwing out there has been good this month, too. If Marquis continues to struggle, I could see the Brewers really blowing them out, because we all know they can score with anyone.
sleezer1788 - September 29, 2009
lol. Nothing would please me more than to see the Brewers beat up on the Rockies.
Well, I mean, the Braves winning the Series would please me more, but you get me.
…..Hopefully Huddy doesn’t have a meltdown tonite.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
Didn’t he allow 2 runs the last time he faced them? And I think that was his first game back. I have a feeling he will have a good game. He seems like the type who really steps up in big games. But maybe we should have KK start instead lol. He does like oppose aces.
sleezer1788 - September 29, 2009
Not sure, but we raped Johnson the last time we saw him.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
Eh, sorta. We got kind of lucky I thought. We really only had one hard hit, which was luckily enough to win. Hopefully he doesn’t pitch as well with the flu as Hanson did.
sleezer1788 - September 29, 2009
After only 3 hits against a really shaky pitcher last night...
I’m pretty skeptical about our chances against Josh Johnson.
pancanbra - September 29, 2009
Josh Johnson throws a no-hitter, yet loses 3-0…
mvandonsel - September 29, 2009
True, but you could say that maybe we would have had more hits if we had gotten more pitches to hit. A lot of the guys who got walked could have also gotten hits if they had had the chance.

If it all crumbles at the hands of the Nats……lol, let’s not go there.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 29, 2009
