The Atlanta Braves got a half game closer to their post-season goal today by shutting out the Marlins. Jair Jurrjens looked like an ace while pitching 7 strong innings, and Chipper Jones slugged his 18th homerun, one of only 3 hits the Braves had all night. They did, however, get walked 11 times.
At one point, Jurrjens retired 11 straight batters from the second to sixth inning. In his early and later innings he worked around runners like a magician with key strikeouts when he needed them most. Jurrjens allowed only 6 base runners and no runs. He comes up huge in a big game... but then, he's pretty much done that all season.
The Braves scored two runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. The Marlins starter, Anibal Sanchez, was a little more than wild and walked the first three Braves batters. A ground out and a sac fly later and it was 2-0 Atlanta. A Chipper Jones homerun two innings later pushed the score to 3-0 Atlanta. In all, Sanchez walked 8 Braves batters in just 5 innings. It's kind of amazing he only allowed 3 runs.
The Marlins bullpen also had a case of the walks when one of their relievers walked in another Braves run with three bases on balls. The Braves bullpen, on the other hand, was almost perfect as Peter Moylan and Rafael Soriano combined for only one walk in 2 innings of work.
Two games out of the wild card with six games left. I guess the word of the day is "Believe."

i printed it out on iron-on paper and made a shirt to wear to the game tonight. Not the best looking shirt in the world, but i don’t really care at this point!
10-4 - September 29, 2009
THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!
sdp - September 28, 2009
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
i like this even better:
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
LET’S GO MOTHER F-ING BREWERS!!!
mvandonsel - September 28, 2009
They looked pretty good against the Phillies
And Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun are both trying to break career records. Hopefully those 2 have monster series, and Cameron, Hart, Gamel, etc. etc. have a great next 3 games.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
They have an abysmal rotation.
VivaLosBravos - September 28, 2009
Jason Marquis has been horrible tho.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
Yeah, Hammel’s not too hot either.
ATLforlife - September 29, 2009
Here's a scary thought for Rockies' fans
If we manage to complete this amazing run, take a moment to think about the rotation probables
Tuesday: Tim Hudson
Wednesday: Javier Vazquez
Thursday: Tommy Hanson
Friday: Derek Lowe
Saturday: Jair Jurrjens
Sunday: Tim Hudson
So that means if we force a one game playoff against the Rockies, we’re throwing out Javier Vazquez to pitch a game played in Turner Field, on normal rest (maybe + 1 extra day). Awesome.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
Javy is a much better pitcher on the road. But still, that is pretty scary.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
His splits say
it’s hardly a difference at all. ERA is .05 higher at home, WHIP is .08 higher, and his K/9 at home is actually better.
Bring them on.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
really? hmm…i coulda swore I saw something that said he was a lot better on the road.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
I would bet
that if it comes down to the game on Sunday that Javy goes on short rest rather than Huddy. But i’m not Bobby Cox.
Hizilla - September 28, 2009
nah
I think he would go with Huddy. The only way it would be different, IMO, is if Huddy gets lit up tomorrow and we’re still in it on Sunday.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
Might be a moot point
if the Braves continue to not lose. Starting to remind me of September 2007.
Hizilla - September 28, 2009
And you consider that a healthy Hudson is a legitimate staff ace, there’s no reason to skip him. And if there’s need to substitute someone in the rotation, we’ve got a very effective #4 starter in KK waiting for a chance to pitch.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
I really love this team
was385 - September 28, 2009
all this believe stuff
reminds me of the movie hook….u have to believe and have a happy thought….
so the question is whats your happy thought???
ottie - September 28, 2009
my happy thought is The Braves scoring 10 runs tomorrow night and Prince Fielder hitting 3 HRs.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
“3 three run HRs.”
That’s better! :-)
bravos1984 - September 28, 2009
“3 three run HRs three nights in a row.”
Now thats even better!
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
That would certainly break a few records. :P
bravos1984 - September 28, 2009
While we're wishing for wishes
I wish to see a Ryan Bruan grand slam bunt. Because it would be awesome AND useful.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
hahah but that would kill the rally!
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
BANGARANG!
ottie - September 28, 2009
If i start believing that we can do this, then we will automatically lose 6 straight.
So I remain skeptical
esadb - September 28, 2009 via mobile
haha
nice… i’d like to see the sign at a game: “I remain skeptical. Do you?”

They had a off day thread devoted to watching the Dodgers and Braves games. Needless to say, they was plenty of disappointment at the end when we pulled it out.

Chipper's plea for fans to flood to The Ted
just got some national play on BBTN. Listen up greater-Atlanta area!
Jareth Cutestory - September 28, 2009
Seriously. Hop in a boat, or even shout it from the rooftops, but bring a buddy, and then go hang near the Ted, yo.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 28, 2009
LOL "hop in a boat"
Calling all Cubans!
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
LOL!
deewill23 - September 28, 2009
So the last time we faced Josh Johnson
3 ER on 6 and 2/3, 8Ks, but a Braves victory. I’d settle for that.
Now that the Marlins are basically eliminated, anyone think there’s a chance Hanley Ramirez gets a day off this series? I’d doubt it because I’m sure they don’t want to hand this thing to us, but there’s a chance, right?
Bronn - September 28, 2009
Basically=not.
You play until is is.
MichaelProcton - September 28, 2009
25,046 in attendance….
That is absolute HORSESHIT!!!!!
bravos1984 - September 28, 2009
not bad for a Monday night tho. Im gonna guess 30,000 tomorrow night.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
hmmm... look at it this way:
marlins, monday night… 25,046 is not bad. normally we’d be lucky to hit 20,000.
so, not great, but there was a definite boost by a few folks who are interested in a playoff run, and that can only improve with more wins and media hype.
brndn - September 28, 2009
it helps that we got a win on a night with no other important games (the Twins/Tigers got rained out)
Also, we finished about 2 hours before MNF finishes, so we get a little more coverage than usual. Im not expecting the word “baseball” from any ESPN announcers tonight after the Dallas/Carolina game.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
yep. good points.

They wouldn’t have needed a 1 game playoff.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
the Catcher in the movie kinda reminds me of Chipper. IDK why.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
Nearing the end of the road, but still getting it done?
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 28, 2009
Yeah. And just his personality. Just loves the game and doesn’t run his mouth…just plays.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
Haha...
Isn’t that Major League?

Have I ever uttered “I say f—- you, Jobu” after smacking a hit in slow pitch softball? Why yes I have
BraveSaluki - September 28, 2009
i literally LOLd
a guy on my team hit one the other day and ran around the bases with the bat in his hands

kp.atl - September 29, 2009
Funny thing on the special edition DVD
There’s an alternate ending where it is revealed that the evil owner chick was actually a baseball genius who, when faced with taking ownership of a team on the brink of bankruptcy had scouted out the entire roster of no name rookies and washed-up has-beans herself, and then created the fake scheme to move the team to Florida and act like she wanted the team to fail to motivate them into playing at their peak (and to hide the fact that she couldn’t afford things like chartered air travel and clubhouse amenities).
Lennox - September 29, 2009
13 straight to finish out the season. And then, we just take the whole, damn thing.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 28, 2009
Buster Olney said he would probably pick us to make the World Series if we make the playoffs
Just sayin…
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
Yeah, I saw that. Let’s just hope somebody takes care of the Yankees.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 28, 2009
I think we’d be able to drive a tomahawk into the big apple. :-)
bravos1984 - September 28, 2009
oh baby
if we beat the Yankees…oh man, I’d probably tattoo the date we won it all on my forehead.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
Greg Norton pinch hit grand slam
Eat your heart out, Jim Leyritz.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
if that happened
I would probably get evicted from my appartment for screaming so much.

VivaLosBravos - September 28, 2009
LOLOL
Jareth Cutestory - September 28, 2009
i will remember u said that
Swo12bv - September 28, 2009
That has the sound
Of a jinx which will take years to overcome.
If Buster Olney says it, run and hide/
Bronn - September 28, 2009
Bump that noise. Jinx this, Buster.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - September 28, 2009
Nah, gonna finally vindicate Eric Young’s 2008 WS prediction of Tigers/Braves
BraveSaluki - September 28, 2009
LOL!! Talk about missing the strike zone….
bravos1984 - September 28, 2009
You know, if we won the World Series
the extra revenue would help the Braves hang on to Hudson and Vazquez for next year. We wouldn’t necessarily need to trade a starting pitcher, even though it would bring a significant increase in payroll.
Returning all of these guys for next season while adding Heyward, and hopefully a full season of McLouth and LaRoche, might make us the early favorites in the NL.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
...especially as the defending WS champs?
MichaelProcton - September 28, 2009
Winning the WS doesn't make you a favorite next season
Example A: The 2006 Cardinals, who won 83 games, beat the Tigers in the WS fairly handily, and were never really contenders during the 2007 season, where they won 78 games.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
Ironic
since his son is rooting quite the other way right now…
VivaLosBravos - September 28, 2009
actually,
he said if the season played out another week or two
because in that time, we would definitely have a 3 or so game lead
Jareth Cutestory - September 28, 2009
Get out to the park!!
Chipper’s practically begging for people to come out and watch these games. I know a lot of us serious Braves fans don’t live in the ATL area, but for those of you who can, get out there!! They need us folks!!
paulyicecubes - September 28, 2009
25000 is good enough for a Monday night
Im gonna guess we have 30,000 tomorrow and wednesday night. If we win both and take Thursday’s game as well, The Ted will be packed this weekend.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
Attendance
I expect there’s going to 35,000+ this weekend if the Braves sweep the Marlins. Hopefully we can get 28,000+ for the next two games against the fish. I find that kind of hard with the flooding situation and school. On the baseball side of things. We have to score early against Josh Johnson, because when he settle in he’s a phenomenal pitcher. So a good strategy is to work the count against him and get into that Marlins Bullpen by 7th or earlier. Lets Keep It Going BRAVES!
deewill23 - September 28, 2009
we really need to play small ball tomorrow if we can. every run is big.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
We got 3 ER off Josh Johnson last time we saw him
So it’s no gurantee he’ll shut us down. Let’s hope McLouth can do what he’s done these past two games and just get on base.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
this
it seems that whenever Nasty Nate gets on base, good things happen
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
He’s one of the guys that helped get this thing started. He was huge in the St. Louis and Mets’ series, but he went into a 8 game slump starting during the series against the Phillies. We’re definitely going to need him to play well in order to keep this thing going.
Bronn - September 28, 2009

bravos1984 - September 28, 2009
Just win baby
I believe there’s a decent chance the Rockies lose two games. If we can win all six of ours, we’ve forced a playoff.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
im hoping
the Dodgers keep losing until this weekend, so they’re in a race for home-field advantage.
Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
If they lose the next 2 games
and the Rockies lose 1, they’ll still be trying to clinch the division by the time Rockies play them.
Perhaps too much to ask, but if the Dodgers have something to play for, it’s to our advantage.
Bronn - September 28, 2009
even if they've clinched the division
im sure they’d want to have home field. Think about it: Game 7 of the playoffs. Would you rather be playing at nice, cozzy Chavez Ravine where its 60 degrees, or in rainy, nasty Phillidelphia where its 40?
I know what I’d prefer.

Scott Coleman - September 28, 2009
I believe!!!!
We need to support this TEAM…… I know many of the braves true fans live away from Atlanta, but those who live there, MUST attend to the remaining games…..Chipper went straight to the point, he called people out!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to have the extra factor, more fans more energy around the players…….PLEASE dont let this braves down, they are doing all they can…….
WE WILL GO TO THE PLAYOFF, AND LISTEN…….WE WILL WIN IT ALL……BRAVES WILL WIN THE WORLD SERIES…..AND HANSON WILL BE THE WS MVP……..

The catch that wasn't!!!!!!
So colorado as seen in the picture should be up only one game. That great catch wasn’t a catch at all in colorado yesterday. This is tough to watch wish they had replays on catches.
As Troy Renck explained in today’s Post, Clint Barmes’ doubling-up of Albert Pujols on an over-the-shoulder, tumbling catch and throw-out to end the game Sunday may end up saving the Rockies’ season.
As Troy Renck explained in today’s Post, Clint Barmes’ doubling-up of Albert Pujols on an over-the-shoulder, tumbling catch and throw-out to end the game Sunday may end up saving the Rockies’ season.
But there’s more to the story. Maybe. If you’ve seen the replay, Barmes’ catch happened very fast. He sprinted to right field, fell over, rolled, sprang up and threw to first. All within maybe three seconds. TV cameras show it all from a distance.
Two photographers, though, got a different angle of Barmes’ play.
The first comes from Post photog Hyoung Chang. One of his photos can be found on the front page of today’s sports section:
But he also took this photo, which didn’t make the paper:
Clearly, Barmes is bobbling the ball on his way down. But it’s not clear in that photo what happens next.
For that, we turn to industrious reader Craig Welling, who posted this photo to the Rockies fan page at the Post Neighbor’s Forum:
It looks as if the ball hits the ground. Craig posted a series of photos at his Rockies photos blog, if you want to see the progression.
Barmes said after the game: "It all happened so fast. I know that it was in my glove, or it hit my glove. And I think as I was going down it hit my glove and then it went across my body or something. I don’t know. I know I came up with it in my bare hand."
Video of Barmes talking about the catch here.
And in his postgame interview, Jim Tracy said: it’s "the most difficult play to make at Coors Field."

Everywhere else has the matchup as Huddy v. Johnson, but BBTN made it sound like Huddy was going up against VandenHurk (near the bottom, in the matchup setion):
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/notebook?page=bbtn
I would love that game…I hope there is some truth to it.

They keep talking about how sick J.Johnson has been...
but one thing that bothers me is that athletes often play much better when they are sick because they don’t try to do too much. Not just baseball but basketball is another good example. It would be nice to face VandenHurk.
