Another big offensive day for the Atlanta Braves, with more help from the Nationals' defense. Atlanta got on the board quick in the first inning with four runs, one of them aided by a non-throwing (?) error by Pete Orr (thanks again, Pete). The key hit was a two-out two-run single from Yunel Escobar.
The Braves added a fifth run on an error in the second inning, then turned the game over to Tommy Hanson. The rookie of the year candidate pitched extremely well today, only running into trouble in the fifth inning, when, perhaps rushing to get through the inning and make the game official (because of the rain), he surrendered a 3-run homerun.
Hanson was better than the 4 runs in the line score make it look. He only allowed 1 walk (which did end up scoring) and 4 hits, while striking out 7. After that tough 3-run fifth inning, Hanson settled down to pitch two more scoreless frames.
It looked like it would be another bullpen nail biter for the last two innings, but after a solid eighth inning from Mike Gonzalez, the Braves bats awoke and put up 5 more runs. The Nats used three relievers in that inning as the Braves just kept banging away, oh, and of course there was another Nats error mixed in there. The highlight of that ninth inning was an absolute rocket shot homerun off the bat of Brian McCann.
It was a good thing the Braves got those insurance runs in the top of the ninth, as the Nats got lucky with some infield hits and a Braves error to threaten in their half of the ninth inning. Rafael Soriano came on to restore order with an easy-queso save.
The Braves keep winning, and now the Rockies will have all day to think about keeping up with Atlanta as Colorado plays tonight at 8pm.

Would you do us the favor of posting an open thread for the Cardinals and Rockies tonight?
bravos1984 - September 26, 2009
i'll 2nd this request
or even just an open thread for all sports. other sites have them and they seem to get a lot of attention and participation.
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009 via mobile
I love this idea
could we discuss baseball and college football? I will be watching both :)
HEYJUDE - September 26, 2009
Yes Gondee you must put up a thread for the Cardinals game. We are scoreboard watching.
That a boy - September 26, 2009
Baseball #1 important sport.
All other sport is run by the gays. :P
bravos1984 - September 26, 2009
Haha, Borat reference??
Do not shrink me gypsy. I am going to take your tears.
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009 via mobile
Yes! Very Nice!

bravos1984 - September 26, 2009
Great success!
“There is a woman in that car. Can we follow her??”
“No, no, no. In America women choose who they have sex with.”
“Whaaaat? You joke!”
“Nope. Isn’t that some good stuff?”
“It not good for me.”
Hahaha love that movie. That and Step Brothers are the funniest in the past 3 years.
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009
Step Brothers was so wonderful, and so under the radar.
MichaelProcton - September 26, 2009
probably for all the cussing. there was a little too much.
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009
No more than most mainstream R comedies these days.
MichaelProcton - September 28, 2009
The Hangover is #1
justincredubil02 - September 26, 2009
that was the best overall movie
but based off pure laughter, I’d take Step Brothers and Borat over The Hangover.
The Hangover gets a little more credit than it deserves, IMO, just because the last 2 minutes were hillarious.
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009
I did not stop laughing during that entire movie for more than about 30 seconds at a time…it was funny from start to finish!
I do love Stepbrothers though….Prestige, WorldWide!

“Mom, I really thought I was going to be raped. He had this crazy look in his eyes and said, ’lets get it on!”
Scott Coleman - September 27, 2009
I literally thought he was going to rape me for a second!
justincredubil02 - September 27, 2009
It's old but...
To Whom It May Concern: This will be my last letter. We have grown apart over these last six weeks. I now have two loves in my life: big-city livin’ and a voodoo woman named Phyllis. Ciao, Roberto."
jeg - September 27, 2009
The Hangover is so overrated.
There were a few funny moments, but mostly, it was a bunch of 30-year-olds making fart jokes.
MichaelProcton - September 28, 2009
yeah, I am pretty sure that you are in the VAST minority with that opinion.
justincredubil02 - September 28, 2009
Football isn’t so bad I can do without hockey, soccer, and the NBA is awful and ran by whistle blowing gays most def.
That a boy - September 26, 2009
This^
HEYJUDE - September 26, 2009
Precisely
nick9314 - September 26, 2009
I was gonna. I'm sooo down!
nick9314 - September 26, 2009
The Braves are on fire.
5 in a row, 13 of 15, 15 of 18. Now, all we have to do in keep it rolling, rolling, rolling for 8 more regular season games.
If so, it will be a truly epic stretch run and bode very well indeed for our championship drive hopes for next season — irrespective of whether we succeed in chasing down the Rockies.
fandave - September 26, 2009
Why don't we just pay a visit to the Cardinals' blog?
We could make some new friends
Jareth Cutestory - September 26, 2009
if you arent a member, it takes 2 days for them to activate your membership
wtf?
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009
seriously?
Lame.
I joined the Phillies blog in 2 seconds. I guess they need all the phans they can get.
Jareth Cutestory - September 26, 2009
They don’t need more fans. They already get over 1000 posts per game thread.
bravos1984 - September 26, 2009
I was over there one day
when they were playing the Braves and there were barely 100 for that game thread. Must have been an anomaly.
Jareth Cutestory - September 26, 2009
2 down 1 to go
anxious to bring out the broom for some more sweep action. So many MVP candidates this game. Tommy w/7 k’s. Yunel staying hot w/ the bat. Chipper regaining his swing. That Nat defense. Too many choices.
adc62 - September 26, 2009
In NAHWAL tomorrow
can I pick the Nats defense as the pick 2 click?
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009
YES
They are helping the Braves, are they not?
nick9314 - September 26, 2009
Yep
It’s like they want to the Braves to sweep them.
deewill23 - September 26, 2009
Well, the more they lose, the sooner they lock up the #1 pick for that high school kid that is skipping his last two years of shcool.
bravos1984 - September 26, 2009
Cubs/Giants update
5-1 Cubbies in the 8th!
If the Giants lose again today, I think it’s safe to say we can count them out (they’ll be 2.5 behind us and either 5 or 6 behind the Rockies).
Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009
At the very least, we should carry some serious swagger into next season.
Bravely going forward - September 26, 2009
I think we have some serious swagger going on this season.
adc62 - September 26, 2009
More like swaying between piss poor and rock solid.

drumzalicious - September 27, 2009
No worries
Jason Heyward is going to teach Chipper how to hit. We’ll be okay next year.
Bronn - September 26, 2009
In a related topic,
I just saw the end of the Lil Wayne Behind the Music. How conceited can one be?

Scott Coleman - September 26, 2009
BTW….I just thought I’d mention that we are 50-30 since June 27th. :-)
bravos1984 - September 26, 2009
is that the day we got rid of he-who-must-not-be-named?
Scott Coleman - September 27, 2009 via mobile
I’m scoreboard watching every night and we probably wont get in but, I know the Phillies, Cardinals, and Dodgers don’t want us to get in. They don’t want any part of our pitching. And if we do make it, I’m throwing a few bones on us winning the pennant. This team is exciting to watch right now for the first time in a good while.
