Braves Ripple Effect Minor League Promotions

After 2 outstanding years in AA, Matt Young will finally get a shot at AAA.

After 2 outstanding years in AA, Matt Young will finally get a shot at AAA.

With the promotions of Brooks Conrad, Clint Sammons, and Luis Valdez to Atlanta, it was inevitable that some other players in the system would be promoted to fill the gaps. Here's who's been moved up:

Gwinnett will add C Benji Johnson, OF Matt Young, and P Jeff Lyman. Lyman, who started 2 games for Gwinnett this season, has thrived mostly as a reliever, combining for a 5-9 record and a 3.46 ERA in 35 games between AA and AAA. Young, who was just named the Southern League's Hustle Player of the Year, followed up last year's Mississippi MVP season with another fine campaign, hitting .289 with a .827 OPS and a team record 42 SB. Johnson will now have played for Myrtle Beach, Mississippi, and Gwinnnett, combining for a .216 average and a .667 OBP in 69 games between AA and AAA.

OF Cody Johnson will join AA Misssissippi, hoping to insert some power into their lineup for the final week of the season. Though an oblique injury has slowed him during the month of August, the slugger managed to hit .242 with a .861 OPS for Myrtle Beach this year, becoming the first player in the Carolina League to hit more than 30 home runs since 1997, as he slugged out a team record 32.

The legend of OF Adam Miligan continues to grow, as he moves up to Myrtle Beach after playing for both Danville and Rome this season. In 61 games for those 2 teams, the first year player hit .361 with an astounding 1.029 OPS that included 12 home runs and 43 RBI.

Moving up from the GCL team to help out Danville in their championship series are C Jace Whitmer, 1B Alberto Odreman, and OF Kyle Rose. Whitmer had previously played for Danville, hitting .220 in 35 games between the D-Braves and the GCL this year. In 55 games in the GCL Odreman his .251 with a .720 OPS that included 9 home runs and 29 RBIs. Rose had a fine season as well, hitting .282 with a .736 OPS along with 26 SB in 47 games.

BOOOO

I wanted to see Kimbrel promoted to AAA. Ah well. Wonder if they will take the Hanson route with him like they are doing Heyward. Ya know, AFL, then AAA next year, Call up in late May.

ALSO

Apparently Tyler Flowers got promoted to the White Sox ML club

Same here

I was also hoping to see Kimbrel promoted to AAA, but I guess that will wait. Never know, he could get a call to the big club later in the month. It will be interesting to see what CJ can do, albeit in a very short amount of time and possibly with an injury.

I agree, it will be interesting, but both those factors add in that it won’t mean much no matter what he does. If he hits 10 home runs and doesn’t strike out at all, it’ll mean as much as if he strikes out every at bat. It’s one week when he’s still being affected by an injury.

Think that CJ

will start with Mississippi next year, or be back at Myrtle Beach for the start of the year?

He’ll be with Mississippi. He has nothing left to prove at the Beach. His game is hitting homers, driving in runs and working a high OPS. Even though the bad final month tanked his numbers, he succeeded at all of those. Yes, he strikes out a ton, but he’s probably always going to. He needs to face the better AA pitchers and see if he really is as good as he could be. Personally, I’m a huge fan and I think he’s going to shock a lot of people next year.

Mississippi…I believe next season will be his proving time.

Mississippi

It will be what makes/breaks his development. If he struggles and makes the adjustment then he will shine.

Possibly.

They could do that to limit him to just playing in Sept and not wearing down his arm for the AFL

Add P Ryne Reynoso to the list of players joining Gwinnett. Reynoso has had a nice season for Mississippi, going 7-9 with a 3.47 ERA. In his last AA start he allowed just 1 run over 7 innings. He’ll likely get 1 regular season start for Gwinnett before the playoffs begin.

Glad they finally gave Young the call. His hat with Mississippi wasn’t even red anymore, it had turned orange.
