Finally! A win for the Atlanta Braves. Can we just attribute this win entirely to Javier Vazquez. He threw 7 innings of shutout ball, walked none, gave up only 5 hits, drove in a run, and struck out 6, all while only throwing 88 pitches (and an amazing 63 for strikes). If we had needed him to he probably could have gone nine innings and captured a shutout, but with a 9-run lead there was no reason to over extend him. The fact that this was only his 11th win is a shame. This should have been win number 17 or 18.
The Braves offense had a second inning full of singles and a Padres error, which led to five runs. On the night, only one of the Braves 17 hits went for extra bases -- the solo homerun by Adam LaRoche in the sixth inning. Chipper Jones picked up a couple of hits, and could have gotten another if not for a terrific diving catch from the Padres center fielder -- the young Tony Gwynn. If he had not laid out for the ball it would have been a 3-run double for Chipper. Every Braves player in the starting lineup got a hit, including Vazquez.
Way to salvage at least one win in the series...

I love weeknight games
The ushers are carefree, so we got to sit in the lower deck with our upper deck tickets. Unfortunately, we ended up right near That Guy. This time, he was played by a cocky young buck who was making up chants and yelling. A “Martin” chant similar to the Mets “Jose” chant, and then “O-Mah” which was followed by he and his buddy yelling like Bostoners for 15 minutes. Someone from behind him did yell “I remember my first beer”. That was pretty good.

I'll take those fans
over the fans that don’t say shit and only claps during the “everybody clap your hands” moments. At least they are into the game, albeit obnoxiously, which is better than the other 80% who aren’t paying attention or don’t put in the energy to get behind the team when they most need us to.

There’s a big difference in yelling for your team and yelling to hear yourself yell. I obviously have no problem with cheering on the team, and do wish Turner Field had more life to it at times.

Point taken….I think down on the field, to the players it’s just the same, unless they are in ear shot of what’s being said. Noise is good, and if anything, makes them think the folks in the stands care, which I don’t think they do at times.

Go Javy. Go Braves.
been sick as a dog the last few days. Hope we can win the series this weekend. After losing 2/3 to the Padres, it only makes sense that the Braves will take 2/3 vs Phillie.

Excellent Bounce Back Win.
Now, we simply must take 2 of 3 from the Phillies.
I like our chances for a win tonight with Hanson on the mound and a seemingly resurgent Chipper anchoring the middle of our lineup.
Go Braves!

Disappointed!
The way he was cruising, I honestly thought we might actually get to see a Braves pitcher throw a complete game. The whole day, I was talking with friends about complete game this, complete game that, Nolan Ryan and the Rangers, and how guys like Roy Halladay make the complete game look so easy, and how Huddy versus the Reds last year was the last complete game for the Braves.
But seriously, a good win. Had a good feeling going into yesterday’s game, even with the rain delay and nonsense. I understand why Bobby pulled Javy, but I still wanted to see a complete game, dammit. But it makes sense that Bobby wanted to get Medlen back in there to get some confidence back, and Buddy to get the feel of pitching to major leaguers again.

You are mistaken.
Javy Vazquez pitched a CG against the Reds on June 17. It was a loss and he just pitched eight innings, but it was a complete game.

You're right
I do remember that now that you mention it, but I guess I have a hard time counting it since it came on a loss. How about I just saying complete game shutout, then? Then the answer is Huddy’s CGS from 2008, right?
royhobbs - August 28, 2009
Probably
Might be the last 9 inning CG win regardless of the shutout.
El Benefactor: The Rafael Belliard Story - August 28, 2009
Good win. Offense finally decided it was high time to show up, and we got vintage JV performance.Although a CG wou’ve been nice, I’d rather take the win. Lets keep it going in Philly

The Phillies and Marlins lost last night
So the 2 losses didn’t hurt nearly as bad as they could have, though a gain in the standings would have been nice. Might not catch the Phillies, but they could have a meltdown, you never know. But we are definitely in the wild card race,so Go Go GO!

Here’s a stat: at home this year we’ve only been swept 2 times all year: in April to the Marlins and in May to the Mets (but it was a 2 game series). That’s good baseball. Whoever says we are out because we can’t play well should rethink what they say
GoBravesNY - August 28, 2009
I don’t think anyone is saying we are out because we can’t play well. They are saying we are out because there have been too many times this season when we should have played well but didn’t and now we are in too deep of a hole to dig ourselves out of
The question now becomes not can we play well but can we play well enough to win ten in a row, or go 6-0 against the Phillies (tall orders) because that is what it will likely take to get in the postseason.
That’s baseball. Those stupid, frustrating losses in the dog days of summer will come back to bite you in September

Great game. Certainly helped to dilute the memory of the first two a bit.
Javy pitched like we all know he can and even got himself an RBI to help the cause.
The best part IMO was 17 hits and only 1 extra base hit.
Seeeeee, hits WILL win ball games, it doesn’t always have to be done via the home run.
Good to see, now let’s go kick some Philly butt.
NCChopper - August 28, 2009
Yup
Always great to win the last game of a series.
Yakker - August 28, 2009
Buddy
I haven’t seen BC pitch in a while and he looked as nervous as a ’ho in church. And his delivery seemed really fast, too. Or had I just forgotten. Meh.
Nice game to watch. Now let’s do that to the Phillies.
