Gwinnett 4, Charlotte 6
JoJo Reyes got roughed up a bit and consequently the G-Braves lost. The offense tried to make it up near the end of the game but thet just couldn't close the gap. Durham is currently losing their game, but if they win the Braves will fall back into a tie with the Bulls. Alvin Colina also went 2-3 with a HR.
Mississippi - Off
Meh, both of our top guys are down for the count.
Potomac 5, Myrtle Beach 3
Donell Linares keeps on hitting the ball. I think he has found that power stroke in the midst of the August heat. Again, he is 24 years old, but he will be in AA next season and he already controls the strike zone well (though without walking much), so he could be someone to watch. I've said before his best comp is probably Yunel Escobar and I still think that.
Rome 1, Charleston 2 - In Progress (5th Inning)
A couple of rain delays have ade this one go on longer than it should. If it progresses I will come back and finish it up. It does look like Randall Delgado bounced back well from his last outing.
Bluefield 3, Danville 5
Something I forgot about Cory Rasmus: He is only 21 years old still. He has been around and then MIA for so long that I just felt like he was older. Anyways, if he can carry his good performance this year into next season he could bolster our already strong pitching depth.
GCL Braves 4, GCL Phillies 6
Carlos Perez has been a little up and down this season. A couple of bad starts have ruined his ERA but his peripherals are not terrible. For a 17 year old I think he is doing quite well. I would bet he adds some velocity in the next couple of seasons.

In regards to Heyward's and Freeman's injuries
I think its unfortunate they got injured, but they’re both playing in the AFL so they aren’t really losing any games. It also makes sure both guys get back to 100%, instead of them trying to play through an injury and doing some serious structural damage.
P.S. When i checked earlier, Cody Johnson already had 2 swinging K’s. Is this guy ever going to learn?
Scott Coleman - August 27, 2009
Its harder for him now that he doesn’t have much protection in the lineup. The part about it that gets me though is that I was hoping it would press him into being a little more selective, but he is still swinging at stuff outside the strike zone way too much.

Hey yondaime
I think Linares is a third baseman. Could he be Chipper’s replacement, or do the Braves need to look elsewhere? 24 now would put him at 26 after a year in AA and one in AAA. I believe Chipper’s contract is for 3 more years with the 3rd year being a team/player option. Chipper or the Braves may be ready to plug that position after a couple more years. I don’t know much about Linares, but do you think he has the power and other tools to be a corner infielder?

ehhhh, I dunno. I am going to have to see what happens to him at AA next year. I really think his best case scenario is Yunel Escobar, maybe with slightly more power. Probably more of a super utility guy in the future. I honestly think he is going to be at least a useful bench guy for us in a couple of years.
yondaime4 - August 28, 2009
Yunel escobar with more power?
Sounds good to me!
Scott Coleman - August 28, 2009 via mobile
I said best case scenario. I think we will find out next season what he is really all about. Though you can say that about anyone going to AA.
yondaime4 - August 28, 2009
I’m not sure if he could be considered super utility if he’d only be able to play 3B and 1B. I really don’t see him being even adequate at 2B and definitely not at SS.
cbwilk - August 28, 2009
sorry I meant to throw super -corner guy in there.
yondaime4 - August 28, 2009
That’d work just fine. I’m very interested to see how he progresses next season. I’ll say one thing, when I saw him back in early May, he spoke almost no English, and when I saw him in late July, he spoke pretty decent English, so he’s definitely a guy who doesn’t mind putting work into something.
cbwilk - August 28, 2009
Yeah I meant to mention that as well. Cuban emigres seem to have the hardest time transitioning to life in the US, probably partly because of where they come from and how old they are when they get here. So I think a lot of times you can take their first year as a wash.

Adam Milligan question:
Where do you think he’ll start next season? Myrtle Beach? He’s just killing the ball in Rome and his K numbers arent all that bad.
Scott Coleman - August 28, 2009
The Beach sounds right. Unless he hits like .800 in ST and they decide he’s ready for AA. But yeah, the Beach sounds more likely.

Why are we still doing the daily minor league scores when Heyward and Freeman aren’t playing?
I kid I kid.
It’s unfortunate about Cody. I really don’t understand players unwillingness to dedicate time to learning the strike zone and not swing at sh*t that isn’t in their zone.
Sparhawk - August 28, 2009
if learning the strike zone were so easy
or just a matter of dedicating time, there’d be a hell of a lot more Chipper Jones-es out there than there are. It’s not as easy as just spending time and all of the sudden it gets better. In a lot of cases, you either got it or you don’t.

Matthew Weaver
He’s been on a huge tear for Danville lately. He was abysmal in the GCL and early for Danville, but he’s got his average up to .330 with a HR and a few doubles. He was a top 10 round draft pick this year out of JUCO, that could be one to watch.
rstrangeiv - August 28, 2009
Good to see Rasmus putting it together. As a 19 year old supp 1st round pick in ‘06, he could bring it at 95 mph and had two other plus pitches. Has anyone actually seen him pitch this year? Hyde was our 4th rounder in ’06 and is finally over injuries and doing well. We have an abundance of BP guys in the ml’s. Wonder if any can do a Medlin and switch to the roatation?
