Atlanta Braves Fan Confidence Up

We have to go back two weeks (since I forgot to post the poll a week ago) to see that the Atlanta Braves Fan Confidence has jumped from 60% to its current 73%. This continues the up and down trend that we've seen all season, and matches the confidence that the fans felt in the team exactly one month ago -- proving again that in the eyes of Braves fans that the team has not necessarily improved over the last month, but they have also not gotten any worse.

Only prolonged winning can bump this thing up any higher, and we have yet to reach the confidence level that we started the season at -- 76%. Perhaps a couple more series victories, or maybe even a series where we win every game (is that too much to ask), and we could see the confidence level shoot up.

If the Braves go the whole week with Infante and Gorecki in the outfield, my vote is going down on Friday. It’s ridiculous that the team keeps playing games in a pennant race with effectively one or two potential position players available on the bench (since Bobby won’t pinch hit whichever catcher doesn’t start in most cases).

Check out our performance relative to salary and other teams:

Salary vs. Performance

So not a single team is performing the way it should have been expected to based on its salary.

I find this chart difficult to give any credit to, due to the simple fact that it has EVERY team not doing what was expected. I think that if there were a few teams who were steady, there might be some merit, but when ALL of the subjects are “incorrect” based on the theory, something is wrong with the theory, not the subject matter.

Eh, what?

I admit this chart is a bit weird, since it’s just ranking the records on one side, and ranking the salaries on the other, but teams like the Cardinals, Rangers, Marlins, and Rockies are all doing really well on this chart.

I just don’t think comparing a team’s wins to its payroll ranking is a good way to evaluate the success of that team.

I think it is interesting, especially in a vacuum. In years past, I always enjoyed seeing the Yankees hit the top in payroll and be further down the list in performance.

I think that looking at it from a business side and assuming that fans like winners and will come see winners (sorry Marlins), it shows which clubs are doing more with what they have. No, it measures no individual performance marks or team performance other than W-L, but those steep lines say a little bit about an organization and their contracts.

Sweep the Padres and watch that meter go even higher!

Number one reason confidence should be up…we have been playing well and winning games despite some injuries to the team.

Why confidence should be down…not many games left and the Rockies are white hot right now.

Thought Lincecum had them last night. The Rox have a pretty easy schedule from here. The Dodgers are the only tough team out of the bunch.

In Buster Olney’s chat today, he agreed with a question that said the Braves had the easiest schedule from here on out.

I am not sure if I buy that or not.

If not the easiest, though, we’ve got to be in the bottom 5. Tons of games left against the Mets and Nationals. Plenty left against Florida, too, who just shouldn’t be as good as their record based on run differential.

What exactly is the confidence poll supposed to measure?

I mean I have very little confidence that this team will make the postseason. I have very little confidence this team has gotten/will get the most out of the $100 million they have spent.

But, I’m confident that we have talent and a good team and will deliver a competitive product on a consistent basis. I’m confident that we are a better organization than say the Pirates.

Just curious as to what criteria people who vote in these use

When I’m voting, my three criteria are

1) How much do I like the team on the field right now
2) How confident am I in their prospects for this season
3) How good do I feel about this team beyond this season

Generally in that order. That third component has only increased over the course of the season, with Heyward and Hanson performing so well, not to mention guys like Freeman, Medlen, and Kimbrel. The second component is starting to drop, but I really do like this current team, and I feel confident that we can win any game we play right now.

The only time I feel like the game is going to be a coin toss is when Lowe is pitching. (They should go ahead and start warming up Meds in the 2nd or 3rd regardless how the big guy is doing.)

He’s like Jamie Moyer, in that he has the most wins, but also the most losses………and we all know what happened to Moyer. Personally, I think Meds could start every 5th day. But with Huddy coming, that’s not even worth any serious thought.

I treat it as mostly a confidence vote in Frank Wren. My vote goes up when he does something I like such as trade for McLouth, Church, and Laroche. It goes down when he leaves Jordan Schafer, Diory Hernandez, or Greg Norton on the roster too long or waits too long to call up Jason Heyward.

Lets’ just sweep the Padres this week. We need that with Philadelphia on deck this weekend
