Game 120 Recap: Braves 15, Muts 2

I suppose that one good turn deserves another, or in this case, one 8-run inning deserves to be paid back. After our "ace" gave up 8 runs in the fourth inning of Tuesday's game, the Braves batters put together their own 8-run inning in Wednesday's game and exacted at least some measure of revenge. The Braves put up 8 in the second inning, highlighted by a mammoth homerun from Brian McCann.

Adam LaRoche followed in the 6th inning with a mammoth homerun of his own. The more I watch LaRoche this go-around with the Braves, the more I am convinced that his swing is even more fluid than it was during his first stint with Atlanta. He also seems to be really enjoying his time back with the Braves. Should we start drumming up the sign Adam chants already?

Not to be outdone by the offense, starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens didn't need but a few runs as he held the Mets to just a pair of runs through 6 innings of solid work to finally win his 10th game of the year. This was his 5th attempt to try and win his 10th game. He has now had two excellent outings in a row after being beaten around to begin August.

Amazingly, the only regular in the Braves lineup without a hit was Mets-killer Chipper Jones. The only other lineup regular without more than one hit was Garret Anderson, everyone else had 2 or 3 hits. Rookie Reid Gorecki got his first major league hit, a run scoring single in the ninth inning.

It was great to see the Braves bounce back with some confidence after they took a beating the day before. Now all we have to do is beat Johan Santana...

Final - 8.19.2009 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E

I’m going to the game tonight! go Kawakami!

me too, i will be wearing my Hanson jersey and doin the chop

I’m trying to get tickets as we speak…

Last night's win was so sweet....

..the black coffee in my Braves mug tastes like it has sugar in it. ;-)

After Tuesday night’s embarrassing loss, this team could have taken the field last night unmotivated and played like it. It was a joy to watch them give it right back to the Mets in fine fashion.

It would be great if some of the other teams in the WC race would lose a game or two, but we’ll just have to take care of our business on the field and not lose any ground.
.

And how great was Jurrjens last night! Our ACE took the mound and put up yet another great performance. He deserves a better W/L record. Per Joe and Boog last night from the booth:

JJ: In 26 starts – 19th time he’s allowed 2 runs or less.

I recommend we take care of the Mets tonight for the series and head back home to fry some fish.

Close enough to a grand slam. If Infante wasn’t so good, it would have happened.

Having to face Santana could be a good thing. This team seems to play up to the big time pitchers and who better than KK to toe the rubber!

Let’s take the series.

History tells us

that the Braves will win tonight. While Johan has a nice ERA against us, we don’t let him beat us. I’m almost positive he is still winless against Atlanta. Besides that, we all know that KK gives us his best against the best in baseball. Didn’t these two already hook up earlier this season, and KK won the matchup? Correct me if I’m wrong…but this sounds familiar.

Anyway, I look for a nice, fundamental win from our boys tonight. Maybe a 2 run homer from Chipper, as well (and I think that’s all we’ll need!)

They did hook up, right before (or after, I don’t recall exactly) the AS break. Johan finally beat Atlanta and KK lost he matchup, but it wasn’t because he didn’t pitch well.

You are wrong.

Santana shut us down – 7 IP, 0 runs, never got a runner past second. Braves lost 5-1, although Kawakami had a decent outing but struggled with his control.

Santana is one of the top three pitchers in baseball. I really hate to face this guy right now.

Ah...I was afraid of that.

That’s why I left the possibility of being wrong in my comment. I just vividly recall the stats before that start, and how, until that night, KK had won all of his premier matchups. Oh well, I’m not worried about tonight.

Kawakami seems to deliver against big name pitchers. Hopefully he continues that tonight.

Loved watching the game last night. Normally blow-outs aren’t all that exciting, but blowing out the Mets/Phillies will always be excited.

And to ad what NCChopper said about JJ. There always seems to be one Brave who doesn’t get run support. I remember a few years back when Smoltz was unhittable and the bullpen kept blowing games for him. You just hate when that happens to pitchers who really deserve the wins. JJ has been stellar this year, it’s just to bad he doesn’t have a record to support it.

They showed a chart on air last night. His run support for the entire month of June was like 1.53.
He was 0-4 in June. I can’t remember the others, but this one really stuck out.

he delivers, but the poor guy never gets the W. Its always a duel, and then the team scores after KK leaves the game.

thats more like it

I stayed for every mut bashing inning. Savoring each run. The Braves came out w/attitude after the thumping they took the night before. Heres hoping Santana doesn’t have the same attitude tonight.

PSA

Anyone who think they’re being cute by doing “first” comments is wrong. You’re being retarded, and I guarantee you they will be deleted.

Thanks, that was really starting to bug me.

you must be swift

I’ve never seen one on TC

+1, and I hope I never do.

Should we start drumming up the sign Adam chants already?

Yes please! Freeman hasn’t hit for much power this year and his OBP is weak too. He clearly needs another year or two to develop in the minors. I’d like to see Laroche re-signed as long as it’s not a really long deal or a very high yearly average.

He’ll want a stipulation in his contract that he won’t be in any form of a platoon, and Bobby won’t guarantee that.

He also will want 3-4 years. At this point I think the Braves need to lock up Adam as soon as possible.

Wait until next May when he’s hitting .180

Going to that game last night was awesome!

Unfortunately, I forgot a camera, so no pictures, but here are my highlights:

1. Pregame, the Mets made a special first pitch for a child with autism to show how kids with autism can still function in the world. Very sweet gesture
2. In connection with Welcome Back Veterans, the Mets treated a veteran to front row seats to watch the game with his family. Again a sweet gesture. When they announced it, it brought applause from the entire stadium which was very cool.
3. An 8 run inning!
4.The 3 HR’s and chopping in Citi Field. (quick story: when Parnell threw the wild pitch, my dad leaned over to me and said, "I bet this costs McCann a Grand Slam. So of course, to spite NCChopper, BMac hits a HR)
5. FUGA beating out an infield single. i was on the floor laughing
6. The pitching, especially watching JJ give up a leadoff triple and not give up a run and Boone work around Matty look like a fool trying to play defense.
7. Medlen pinch hitting- Bobby finally wised up to not use Norton :)
8. Gorecki’s first hit and RBI
9. On the scoreboard, there was a lightbulb that blew, and it blocked out half of Frenchy’s name in the Mets lineup; so the black hole in the Mets lineup
10. Hearing “Fire Omar” chants when Redding gave up those runs
11. Hearing “Larry” chants for Chipper, and cheers for Church

On a side note, the Mets love their world series of 1969, almost too much. Come on, pennant in the grass in center field and logos of the Mets 1969 in paint along the first and third base lines; just too much.

To sum up, it was an awesome game to go to, with the bats backing a great pitching performance. This being my first Braves game since the summer of Frenchy, it was awesome

Very cool man. Thanks for sharing some of the experiences at the game.

LOL

poor Muts. they dont have a jersey to retire like we did with Maddux soo they recognize a team from 40 years ago! way to go Muts, way to go.

actually, very funny

because in the section of their retired numbers, (which besides Jackie Robinson is 2 other people), there are no names, just the numbers in a baseball planted on the outfield wall down the left field line. Of course, since they don’t have anybody to retire, they have a little baseball with the word “Shea” in it.

Great recap. Glad you were at the game to witness the beating of the Mets.
But, curious as to why would BMac hitting a GS spite me? I had that GS graphic poised and ready, hoping it would happen. I was glad for the run scoring with the wild pitch, but I was really hoping BMac would get the GS instead.

Perhaps we’ll finally get one of those tonight. :-)

Him not hitting the grand slam spites you. The word “spite” has now lost all meaning to me, like when you look at the same word a bunch of times and it doesn’t look right anymore.

Yeah, I read it like 3x and still not sure the connection.

yeah, i’m not even sure if the word spite is right. More of, when BMac came to the plate I thought to myself, “oh maybe NC will finally get a GS graphic” and then the WP happened, my dad made his comment, and BMac hommered. Almost like there is a curse of the GS graphic.

Most of you

have no idea how much fun it is to watch the Mets get blown out on SNY (the Mets station).

Of course, during close games when the Mets are in contention, I hate having to watch on SNY, so I usually watch on mute…

Was it just me, or does Ron Darling just talk about his “playing days” exclusively? Their broadcast is pretty awful, so for those of you hating on Chip Carey, you have no idea how lucky you are

this x100 million

Chip is better than people give him credit for. I’m not saying he’s the best…

Rob Dibble is the worst on MASN (Nats)

I don't know....

he really, really irritates me.

The final straw for me

was when he asked Joe if Jamie Moyer was a HOFer

I dunno

that wasn’t so illegitimate of a question. HOF voters still take wins way to seriously, and Moyer has 250 of them.

Almost 10 a year!

I hope nobody’s actually considering him, though. The only categories he’s ever led the league in are earned runs and HR allowed. Not exactly a “dominant player in his era”

Oh, of course I agree

I mean, I don’t think he is legitimately in the discussion. But I wouldn’t be at all shocked if he saw his name on a HOF ballot at least once. Probably (hopefully for the legitimacy of the hall) he doesn’t actually meet the threshold to remain on the ballot. But I can see him being considered.

Very Very Very true

Ron Darling sucks. It’s a tiny step up from ESPN and Joe Morgan…It’s that bad.

Mr. Parnell...

I would PAY the Mets to let Ricky Bobby Parnell pitch again!

muts?

Maybe this is why so many people make fun of this site, not even the writters are classy, let alone the trashy comment section.

I’ll be at the game tonight rooting on the Bravos, but being a baseball fan first.

(bows at feet)

We’re not worthy!!! We’re not worthy!!! Bump the Muts!!

Get off your high horse.

What does it say about you, contributing to the “trash” in the comments? If you don’t like it, I’ll be happy to show you the door.

Take off your white wig and stop judging me!
They confirmed you???

“Writters” may not be classy, but our writers are.

That right there is one example of why I love this site.
Tip my cap to ya Lizzie.

correcting minor spelling errors does not contribute.
This is a "fan" site, you know like "fan"atic!

If you want class, there’s always the National Geographic Channel. Anyway, since when did baseball not include jeering and name calling? It’s all a harmless part of the wonderful world of Baseball.

Sorry you were offended, can I show you to www.espn.com? You’ll fit right in!

Sorry guys, that sort of irritated me…

Classiness Defined

Thrashed88
joined Jul 27, 2009 – so in 2 weeks, you have heard “so many” people making fun of this website? Interesting. I have been a member much longer than that, and the only ones I have ever seen/heard make fun of this site are the Mets fans and Phillie fans – and the reasoning to that should be obvious. Most other SBN sites have a good amount of respect for this site and its members.

Here are your “Classy” contributions to this website:

Uh didn’t Blanton go undefeated with them last year and win a world series? and didnt he hit a HR in the world series? and hasn’t he been their 2nd best pitcher this year? yea that didn’t work out…

Sarcasm is always classy.

way to stay classy, mvhsbball

Calling out posters that vent their frustrations by sarcastically saying that they are being classy is not classy.

In summary, STFU and GTFO.

Oh, and you stay classy, San Diego.

You should really stop trying to protector and defender, its quite ridiculous

Sarcasm is always classy.

A sarcastic comment about sarcasm. I’m sure that’s some sort of irony.

I haven’t claimed to be classy. I am one of the most sarcastic people on here, and I don’t run away from that.

Not an attack

oh…sorry.

:)

I see that now. Yes, irony is everywhere.

I hate to say it, but its true.
Do not sign laroche.

unless he take a one or two year deal, which he wont most likely.
