Update: Totally didn't see that other Danville game when I was looking at the scoreboards. Now get off my freaking case.
Wow, so my trip was definitely 3 hours longer than it should have been. I love that.
Durham 4, Gwinnett 5
Please bring up Buddy Carlyle now and send Acosta down. Brandon Jones now has 3 homers in his last 6 games after going 0fer April-May-June. He also mainted that .765 SLG he is putting up this month. Is this a fluke or is he making up for lost time? Or has he been hanging out with Manny and Big Papi? Also, Gwinnett now has sole lead of the division.
Mississippi @ Huntsville = RAIN
Salem 3, Myrtle Beach 2 - Game 1 - 7 Innings
There really wasn't anything else worth mentioning here. Cody really needs to start hitting bombs again.
Salem 10, Myrtle Beach 1
Man, Edgar Osuna got beat like a guy who is pitching poorly and gives up a lot of hits (bad analogy?). And for anyone paying attention to this boxscore, the opposing pitcher is not the Jose Capellan that pitched for the Braves. Gerry Rodriguez is still maintaining an .800+ OPS for the Pelicans and has hit much more consistently since he was promoted.
Rome @ Hagerstown - RAIN
Danville 10, Princeton 2 - Game 1 - 7 Innings
Another rough game for the Braves affiliates. David Hale hasn't been all that spectacular since he signed but surprisingly tonight's walk was his first of the season. He is a guy who has been tabbed as having control issues and I wouldn't be surprised if the Braves are keeping him in Danville to work out some kinks in his delivery and decide how he is going to be used in the long term.
Danville 13, Princeton 0 - Game 2 - 7 Innings
Cory Rasmus, longtime possessor of one of the most electric arms in the system, finally showed us tonight what he is all about. As you see from the line above and my revised title, Cory Rasmus tossed a no hitter tonight (albeit in a shortened game) the only blemish was a 5th inning walk. I am glad to see Cory get some returns on his new arm. Hopefully he can build on this, because he is going to need to move quickly if he wants to make up for lost time. Also this might have the most wasted offensive night ever.
GCL Blue Jays 10, GCL Braves 7
The Braves bats were flashing their power on this night, but the pitchers made sure the Blue Jays were doing the same thing. Layton Hiller has shown some real power so far this season (21 XBH in 139 AB) but his plate discipline is some of the worst I have seen (2 walks vs 46K). This guy is 21 years old and playing in the GCL, so he obviously has some stuff to work on. But he remains intriguing to me, if still a longshot.

I know Rome is in rain delay
But HOW can you not mention the fact that Cory Rasmus has a no-hitter through 7?
ATLandUNC - August 12, 2009
Because he didn’t want to jinx it?
cbwilk - August 12, 2009
because when I checked it there weren’t any stats like it was a rainout. ill check it again
yondaime4 - August 12, 2009 via mobile
Another rainout in Mississippi
Heyward truly is the RainMaker.
Bronn - August 12, 2009

carlyle made his case tonight.
yondaime4 - August 12, 2009
No kidding
What’s his stat line for all his rehab appearances? Anyone know/ care to look it up?

Harilchak
Has been awesome this season! I was really down on this years draft because of our 1st rd pick of Minor but this draft class has been pretty good so far with a couple of suprises. And Minor might turn out to be an awesome pick but so far Harris, Crim, RSF, Jones, Hefflinger, Masters and Rose have all played well so far since being drafted.
Jay212033 - August 12, 2009 via mobile
harrilchak is definitely my favorite guy so far. he has all the tools but power and could move quick. the problem though is all these guys should probably be playing a level up from where they are. still nice though.
yondaime4 - August 12, 2009 via mobile
I liked what I saw out of him. He’s kind of small and wirery, but he’s a gamer. (Please no David Eckstein references.)
cbwilk - August 12, 2009
How about some love for Reid Gorecki, he has put up a solid .840 OPS this season. Last year between Richmond and Miss, he put up a .847 OPS. He is old, but maybe he will get a shot next spring at a bench role.
MatM - August 12, 2009
I’d like to see Matt Young from Mississippi get a look too, as a 4th OF.
Mighty Healthy - August 12, 2009
I can't see that happening.
Right now it looks like the outfielders in ’10 will be Heyward, McLouth, Church, and Diaz. If Schafer tears it up in the spring then maybe we keep him too. Of course we may let Church or Diaz leave by not offering arbitration.
KC Ryan - August 12, 2009
still think Heyward starts in AAA
and our outfield will be McLouth in LF, Schafer in CF and Church/Diaz in RF.
i DO think that Freeman starts out next year as our 1B, though.
apoxonbothyourhouses - August 12, 2009
you don't think they learned from the Schafer experience this year
not to rush up a positional player? I hope you’re right though, I think if they did that they’d have to be overwhelmingly surprised with his development. I think it’s more realistic they give him another year to get bigger and develop his power a bit more.
Cracker! - August 12, 2009
You can’t compare Heyward to Schafer…
bwellnjonesco - August 12, 2009
I didn't
I compared Freeman to Schafer, only because poster is recommending he starts the year in Atlanta at 1b.
Cracker! - August 12, 2009
Sorry Cracker!!
bwellnjonesco - August 12, 2009
no problem good buddy, my post wasn’t really clear, but I was referring to the AA to MLB jump of Schafer in reference to Freeman
Cracker! - August 12, 2009
I gotcha, yeah I misunderstood ya.
bwellnjonesco - August 12, 2009
unless Heyward is hiding an injury, then I’d say that you couldn’t compare them.
Sparhawk - August 12, 2009
and you'd be right
Cracker! - August 12, 2009
You’re crazy.
Heyward is our opening day RF in ’10…
When you’re the best hitter in the minors, regardless of age, wtf else are they gonna do with you?
timmy3 - August 12, 2009
Youve got it backwards.
esadb - August 12, 2009
I think they let Church walk over Diaz since we’ll have too many lefties in the OF. I also think Schafer starts in CF next season.
Mighty Healthy - August 12, 2009
I've said it before, will say it again...
how much longer does Rasmus stay in rookie ball? His already logged a solid # of innings, and done very well in them. Maybe it’s time for a move up to Rome, maybe join the bullpen in the Beach? It’d be nice to get him at least one or two starts in A ball this year just to gauge where he’s at.
Mr. Sanchez - August 12, 2009
I think quite a few guys have earned some promotions but it doesn’t seem to be happening. No need to rush these guys, but does anyone know why some guys just aren’t getting promotions? Just no room currently on other rosters?
Sparhawk - August 12, 2009
I have no idea why RSJ hasnt been called up b/c the 1B for Rome is hitting under .150, while he’s proving that Danville is no match for him.
Harrilchak is blocked a little by the logjam in the OF at Rome, so I would imagine if Heyward moved up, then someone from MB would move up (Cody??) and then Milligan would move to MB and CH would go to Rome, but unless someone else moves our ML OF is a little jammed up.
rstrangeiv - August 12, 2009
great, thanks!
Sparhawk - August 12, 2009
The thing is, at this point in the year, they typically don’t promote a ton of guys. If you promote a guy at the lowest level, like from Danville to Rome, then you have to make a promotion or an outright release at the higher levels. Sometimes it’s Ok to have a kid really dominate a level and feel great about his season. Their careers are going to be longer than one year.
cbwilk - August 12, 2009
How do the players feel about it?
bwellnjonesco - August 12, 2009
Honestly, at this point in the year, everybody wants to go home. Really, by the time mid-August hits, they’re counting the days to the end of the year. Unless they’re getting moved up to the big leagues, I doubt they’re that concerned.
cbwilk - August 12, 2009
Apparently there’s more to do in Rome for fun than in Danville. Having been to Rome, GA a couple of times, this does night speak well for the nightlife in D’ville. Then again having been to a few of the towns on the Appy League circuit (Greenville, Pulaski), yeah they all are pretty bereft of fun.
timmy3 - August 12, 2009
This is true. Haven’t been to Rome yet, but I know there’s nothing much going on in Danville. I was told the only Appy League town with anything worthwile is Johnson City.
cbwilk - August 12, 2009
Yeah, Johnson City’s actually not half bad.
timmy3 - August 12, 2009
you can always drop some inexplicably,...
like Zeke Spruill.
Mr. Sanchez - August 12, 2009
Cory Rasmus is the man. Glad he’s finally out of Orlando and I hope he punishes every team he faces.
cbwilk - August 12, 2009
+1
Everything we’ve heard he has a great arm…hopefully he’ll progress fast and get by these injury problems.
soup du jour - August 12, 2009

Is continuing to put up some nice numbers.
