Pitching wins championships, just remember that. Tommy Hanson added another win to his Rookie of the Year resume as the Braves bested the Nationals Tuesday night at Turner Field. Hanson had a shakey first inning, struggling to find his command on every pitch, but he battled through, actually struck out the side in the first, and only allowed one run to score. After that, he was pretty much in command. He got some help from the third base umpire, who ruled Nyger Morgan out on a steal attempt, when he seemed to be safe -- that led to a Washington coach being ejected.
As for the offense, it was pretty much evenly spread out, with everyone contributing. Every regular got at least one hit. Ryan Church was 2-for-3 with 2 walks filling in last minute for Nate McLouth. Chipper Jones was 2-for-4 with a walk and a homerun that was absolutely crushed in the 7th.
We broke the Nationals 8-game winning streak and sent their best hitter, Adam Dunn, home with a golden sombrero.
The Braves did some good hitting with runners in scoring position, getting some key run-scoring doubles from Martin Prado in the third, and Yunel Escobar in the fifth. Just a lot of good hitting in this game. And a lot of good pitching. More games like this, please.

Let’s swat the Nats out of town.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - August 11, 2009
Go plan, I hope we can keep the wins coming.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - August 11, 2009
Good sorry.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - August 11, 2009
Peter gammons just said something on baseball tonight to the effect that Hansons delivery is going to effect him in the long run, like in 3-5 years he is gonna have arm trouble, can anyone comment on this? Are there any comps? Please? This worries me.
fizzbot - August 11, 2009
It's an odd delivery, no doubt
but driveline mechanics did a breakdown (I trust them a bit more than Gammons for mechanics) and they seemed to like his overall mechanics. Most people who don’t really know mechanics (myself included) automatically think when they see something different, it means future injury, but that’s not necessarily true. And the last part, cross your fingers. No matter how good your mechanics, injury can hit any pitcher.

WeStillHaveBobby - August 11, 2009
I approve of this post.
Hanson’s arm action is sexy.
VictorW - August 11, 2009
So what does this mean? is he gonna be ok? I’m worried… future of our franchise…
fizzbot - August 11, 2009
it means
what will be is what will be. There’s no reason to be overly worried about an increased chance of injury because of his mechanics, but at the same time, pitchers do get injured. He’s got just as good a shot as any other pitcher of staying healthy. If you want to see the kind of mechanics that get you injured, go watch Mat Latos pitch.
was385 - August 11, 2009
Kyle says he loves Hanson’s arm action, which he considers the most important part of a pitcher’s mechanics.
He says Hanson’s tempo is bad (which it is), but that, I believe, just means he’s easier to steal off of. Kyle doesn’t like the followthrough though, which does look kind of like Peavy’s followthrough, but that’s not as significant as arm action. Basically, Kyle thinks he is less likely to be injured than the average pitcher.
VictorW - August 11, 2009
F U Peter Gammons.
I’ve heard it mentioned before, but scouts ALWAYS find little flaws in every prospect. Im not too worried.
Scott Coleman - August 11, 2009
People like Gammons commended Mark Prior’s mechanics and harped on Tim Lincecum’s, these guys really don’t know about probable injury risk they’re just floating out non-sensical opinions
McCann's the Man - August 11, 2009
in all fairness
Prior’s mechanics out of college were considered damn near perfect
was385 - August 11, 2009
I’m just saying it’s pretty much a crapshoot
McCann's the Man - August 11, 2009
That was a myth perpetuated by the loud-mouthed Tom House. That’s the only reason anyone thought it was “perfect.”
VictorW - August 11, 2009
I was under the impression the Prior’s mechanics were horrid…
mvandonsel - August 12, 2009
the best mechanics in the world don’t protect you from Marcus Giles
cirela20 - August 12, 2009
It would be nice to get some help
Fish and Phils are both in extra innings.
VivaLosBravos - August 11, 2009
even having them just wear out their staffs would be pretty nice
was385 - August 11, 2009
That’s certainly 1 silver lining about the extras for them tonight.
11 and counting for both so far…
NCChopper - August 11, 2009
especially the Phils
since we’re about to start a series where our pen (fingers crossed we have an easy game tomorrow) will be well rested.
was385 - August 11, 2009
speaking of bullpen, angels released justin speier today. Don’t know if we’d be interested but we should, he’ll only get league minimum and he’s been a good setup man in the past
McCann's the Man - August 11, 2009
not a half bad idea
Bobby (for all his flaws) seems to be able to get the most out of retread relievers a lot. Wouldn’t mind replacing right about now.
was385 - August 11, 2009
and he can’t be worse than a guy like acosta
McCann's the Man - August 11, 2009
Wasn't Speier briefly a Brave at some point in the past?
The Keith Lockhart Era - August 12, 2009
Yeah, hoping the Cubs wear them out before we get ’em.
NCChopper - August 11, 2009
Hey who knows the way FLorida is planing an being so streaky just like the Phil’s the race is still pretty open. We just have to keep winning an I love seeing the 8 runs being scored in a game.
Go Braves !!!

Getting really dangerous, there.

2-1 the count to Johnson

Bradley missed a homer to CF by 5 feet
Scott Coleman - August 11, 2009
At the leaast
would have been nice for Lee to bat with someone on base. Easily the most dangerous man in the Cubs’ line-up.
Bronn - August 11, 2009
wheres Ramirez? That guy is always hurt.
Scott Coleman - August 11, 2009
I think they just put him on the DL today or he’s headed there soon

his HR numbers died all of sudden after after June.
Scott Coleman - August 11, 2009
My fantasy team
had Adrian Gonzalez, Ian Kinsler, and Bay on it. They all started off hot and all PLUMMETED. Still 19 games ahead of anyone else so I guess I don’t have too much to complain about.
was385 - August 11, 2009
Actually

Yeah. Treading water.
bravos1984 - August 11, 2009

BRaves1 - August 11, 2009
Wow.

Bronn - August 11, 2009
I went to a baseball game today. A team had 7 runs on 4 hits through an inning, and 13 runs on 7 hits through 2 innings
GoBravesNY - August 11, 2009
So let's see
Cardinals lose, Cubbies lose, Astros lose, Brewers lose.
Everyone remotely involved in the NL Central race loses. Everyone in the NL East race wins.
Bronn - August 11, 2009
Giants are also winning :/
Still only the 5th inning though..
WeStillHaveBobby - August 11, 2009
Lets go Dodgers, Lets go!
Beat the Giants. We can gain a game on 3 teams in the wild card as long as the Rockies keep losing.

Rockies,Giants,Cubs

with this pitching staff and the bats finally picking up (McCann still has to get going again), I like our chances.
was385 - August 11, 2009
nice, especially since the cubs are about to fall way back imo. I also think the giants offense is too suspect and they don’t have great pitching beyond Cain and Lincecum, good not great. I think it’s down to the Rockies, Marlins, and us for WC
McCann's the Man - August 11, 2009
I really think
this team can make a huge run if we make it to october!! we have the stuff!!

GoBravesNY - August 11, 2009
McLouth tweeked his hammy in BP. LaRoche got the night off to let Infante get a start in…he’s also 0-7 against Lannan.
Scott Coleman - August 11, 2009
oh. any update on Nate? He okay? LaRoche makes sense, but the Nate tweaking sounds scary

And yes, they showed at least one shot of Jeff Francoeur hitting in a Braves uniform. I’d understand if the trade was like a week ago, but you’re “the worldwide leader in sports.” Someone should have been on top of that highlight package.

The Braves must regain the same winning attitude, they had in the 1990’s,when they had Smoltz,Maddox,Glavin,Gant,Justice,Chipper, etc. And the captains of the team, need to make sure, the promising youngsters on the team are raised with the right attitude. Get the right attitude Braves:“win, win, win, and win again.”All misbeliefs such as " I can’t", must be eliminated."The Phillies, are not a better team. The Dodgers, are not a better team, nor the Yankees, nor the Red Sox. We, the Atlanta Braves, are the best team in baseball ! ! " Without that daily mind set, FORGET IT .
