Game 113 Recap: Nationals 1, Braves 8

Pitching wins championships, just remember that. Tommy Hanson added another win to his Rookie of the Year resume as the Braves bested the Nationals Tuesday night at Turner Field. Hanson had a shakey first inning, struggling to find his command on every pitch, but he battled through, actually struck out the side in the first, and only allowed one run to score. After that, he was pretty much in command. He got some help from the third base umpire, who ruled Nyger Morgan out on a steal attempt, when he seemed to be safe -- that led to a Washington coach being ejected.

As for the offense, it was pretty much evenly spread out, with everyone contributing. Every regular got at least one hit. Ryan Church was 2-for-3 with 2 walks filling in last minute for Nate McLouth. Chipper Jones was 2-for-4 with a walk and a homerun that was absolutely crushed in the 7th.

We broke the Nationals 8-game winning streak and sent their best hitter, Adam Dunn, home with a golden sombrero.

The Braves did some good hitting with runners in scoring position, getting some key run-scoring doubles from Martin Prado in the third, and Yunel Escobar in the fifth. Just a lot of good hitting in this game. And a lot of good pitching. More games like this, please.

Let’s swat the Nats out of town.

Go plan, I hope we can keep the wins coming.

Peter gammons just said something on baseball tonight to the effect that Hansons delivery is going to effect him in the long run, like in 3-5 years he is gonna have arm trouble, can anyone comment on this? Are there any comps? Please? This worries me.

It's an odd delivery, no doubt

but driveline mechanics did a breakdown (I trust them a bit more than Gammons for mechanics) and they seemed to like his overall mechanics. Most people who don’t really know mechanics (myself included) automatically think when they see something different, it means future injury, but that’s not necessarily true. And the last part, cross your fingers. No matter how good your mechanics, injury can hit any pitcher.

I approve of this post.

Hanson’s arm action is sexy.

So what does this mean? is he gonna be ok? I’m worried… future of our franchise…

it means

what will be is what will be. There’s no reason to be overly worried about an increased chance of injury because of his mechanics, but at the same time, pitchers do get injured. He’s got just as good a shot as any other pitcher of staying healthy. If you want to see the kind of mechanics that get you injured, go watch Mat Latos pitch.

Kyle says he loves Hanson’s arm action, which he considers the most important part of a pitcher’s mechanics.

a clean arm action is the most important part of the delivery and Hanson definitely has that going for him.

He says Hanson’s tempo is bad (which it is), but that, I believe, just means he’s easier to steal off of. Kyle doesn’t like the followthrough though, which does look kind of like Peavy’s followthrough, but that’s not as significant as arm action. Basically, Kyle thinks he is less likely to be injured than the average pitcher.

F U Peter Gammons.

I’ve heard it mentioned before, but scouts ALWAYS find little flaws in every prospect. Im not too worried.

People like Gammons commended Mark Prior’s mechanics and harped on Tim Lincecum’s, these guys really don’t know about probable injury risk they’re just floating out non-sensical opinions

in all fairness

Prior’s mechanics out of college were considered damn near perfect

I’m just saying it’s pretty much a crapshoot

That was a myth perpetuated by the loud-mouthed Tom House. That’s the only reason anyone thought it was “perfect.”

I was under the impression the Prior’s mechanics were horrid…

the best mechanics in the world don’t protect you from Marcus Giles

It would be nice to get some help

Fish and Phils are both in extra innings.

even having them just wear out their staffs would be pretty nice

That’s certainly 1 silver lining about the extras for them tonight.
11 and counting for both so far…

especially the Phils

since we’re about to start a series where our pen (fingers crossed we have an easy game tomorrow) will be well rested.

speaking of bullpen, angels released justin speier today. Don’t know if we’d be interested but we should, he’ll only get league minimum and he’s been a good setup man in the past

not a half bad idea

Bobby (for all his flaws) seems to be able to get the most out of retread relievers a lot. Wouldn’t mind replacing right about now.

and he can’t be worse than a guy like acosta

Wasn't Speier briefly a Brave at some point in the past?

Yeah, hoping the Cubs wear them out before we get ’em.

Hey who knows the way FLorida is planing an being so streaky just like the Phil’s the race is still pretty open. We just have to keep winning an I love seeing the 8 runs being scored in a game.

Go Braves !!!

Swapping my comments on Marlins and Philles

over to here.

Heyward

anyone know what he did tonight or was Mississippi off

Game canceled

rain, I think? Heyward is the RainMaker

Okay

Christ Coste flies out to left with Tejada on first in the top of the 11th. Going to the bottom of the 11th in Florida

Utley pops out in the top of the 11th

1 out.

Bottom 11 in Florida

Coghlan draws a 4 pitch walk ahead of Nick Johnson, with 0 outs. Hanley on deck.

Getting really dangerous, there.

2-1 the count to Johnson

and this guy’s misses aren’t even close.

Kid’s name is Wesley Wright.

Lets go Cubbies!

Top of the lineup due up…

Cubs held the Phillies. Now let’s score!

2 outs

Phillies, at least

are running out of pitchers.

ahhh

Bradley missed a homer to CF by 5 feet

At the leaast

would have been nice for Lee to bat with someone on base. Easily the most dangerous man in the Cubs’ line-up.

wheres Ramirez? That guy is always hurt.

I think they just put him on the DL today or he’s headed there soon

Just got a cortisone shot

So they’re hoping to avoid putting him back on the DL.

This makes me miss the games I saw in the Astrodome.
Minute Maid park is nice – but something about the Astrodome…

Just missed it….

FUCK

Phillies HR

Ben freaking Fransisco.
Kevin Greg Sucks.

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Wow

Adrian Gonzalez is 6/6 today against the Brewers and not one of those hits is a homer

I've heard that he's pretty good.

his HR numbers died all of sudden after after June.

My fantasy team

had Adrian Gonzalez, Ian Kinsler, and Bay on it. They all started off hot and all PLUMMETED. Still 19 games ahead of anyone else so I guess I don’t have too much to complain about.

Actually

Feel a bit like a genius. I’ve had him on my fantasy bench for a while since he’s been slumping (and I have Joey Votto) but just today I decided to put him back in for a while.

Albert Arias

now pitching for Houston

Marlins win.

SHIT SHIT SHIT.

Dammit. Houston let us down.

Lol at MLB Network

Cecil Cooper pulls a guy who just walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th, and still gets second-guessed.

Game over

Marlins win

Damn Marlins win

Lets go cubs!

We need some help tonight.

We’ll it’s looking like it’s a good thing we won, just not for the reason we hoped for.

So, if the Phillies hang on to win, have we made ANY progress with our win tonight?

Stopping the Nats streak was nice, but we sure would have liked to have some help elsewhere.

Wild card…Colorado is down 6-3 and the Giants are only up 1-0. Cards are losing in the 9tth as well.

Let's go Derrek Lee

You’re my hero.

Actually, I’ve always liked Derrek Lee, he’s among my favorite non-Braves.

Cory Rasmus at Danville

Has a no hitter going thru 6!

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2009_08_11_dnvrok_prirok_1

Let’s hope it doesn’t turn out like the Rich Harden perfecto.

as long as our prospects perform well

I could really care less about what the team does

Got under that one.

Did he?

Well, he was my best hope for a Cubs comeback.

I recorded “The Cleaner” and want to watch before it’s much later…. come on Cubbies!!

Ball 4 to Jake Fox.

2 run HR time?!

nevermind…its Geo Soto.

hey

he got a hold of one earlier just foul and hit a homer yesterday I think

If he could just reach base

Soriano is on deck. For what it’s worth.

really? well lets hit another one then! 1-2 count

god damnit.

K for Soto. Soriano up w/ 1 on and 2 out.

He needs to put those long arms to use.

damn phillies and marlins won..

Anyone watching MLB network

Cardinals just scored on something stupid.

cubs suck

Ballgame.

really?!?!? Chad Durbin. wow Chicago

Hey all, I see we had a great game. anything not mentioned by gondee that I should know?

Philles and Marlins were both losing at various times, and both pulled out wins in the 11th inning.

Had a chance for a HUGE day, and it turned out just to be okay.

Yeah. Treading water.

Hanson was filthy.
And everyone contributed on offense…even Hanson w/ 2 sac bunts.

wow. how did Infante do in his return

steller. it won’t take him long. he was charged with an error, but it was really mac’s fault.

At least the Rockies are losing

they’ll probably win it in the 11th.

this made me lol in a sad kind of way

that would be the Braves luck

Thanks for NOTHING to the Cubs and Astros.

Well, we do appreciate you taking the losses to extra innings.

i'm in picture withdrawl

Now the Reds are trying to blow it.

jk, they beat the Cards.

Well, as long as we keep winning, something good has to happen.

Phillies only had three hits

Wow.

Just saw that. 4 runs on 3 hits.

Nice work Cubbies.

I went to a baseball game today. A team had 7 runs on 4 hits through an inning, and 13 runs on 7 hits through 2 innings

So let's see

Cardinals lose, Cubbies lose, Astros lose, Brewers lose.

Everyone remotely involved in the NL Central race loses. Everyone in the NL East race wins.

Giants are also winning :/

Still only the 5th inning though..

Lets go Dodgers, Lets go!

Beat the Giants. We can gain a game on 3 teams in the wild card as long as the Rockies keep losing.

which 3?

Rockies,Giants,Cubs

cubs, right. forgot about them

Rockies (down 7-3), Giants (NOW DOWN 2-1!) and Cubs (Lost 4-3)

last one of the night

Great Game for the BRAVES tonight.
I think I’ll end my night remembering that positive note.

good point, we are all being a bit to skeptic. Hanson pitched great and offense showed up. it was a nice win

I like your way of thinking here! Let’s keep it rolling Braves!!

Yeah. Plus, we’ll have plenty of chances to make sure FLA and PHI lose.

exactly this^
"we'll have plenty of chances to make sure FLA and PHI lose"

Yeah, like this weeekend!

dont forget the AAA team next week!

and hope Pedro gets rocked tommorow

that should be fun to watch..I hope he gets roughed up like Smoltz did against the Yankees lol..

anyone know the Mets record??

baaaaaaaaaaaad

dont they have a thing that their not going to shave until they get to .500???

they’ll look like a bunch of cavemen if they do that.

thats why there are hermits walking around NY

Francoeur and I think Cora already dropped that

there’s going to be some thiiiiick beards going on in that clubhouse..

52-60 going into play today and losing now

how far back are win in the wild card if the rox and giants both lose?

i think three

with this pitching staff and the bats finally picking up (McCann still has to get going again), I like our chances.

nice, especially since the cubs are about to fall way back imo. I also think the giants offense is too suspect and they don’t have great pitching beyond Cain and Lincecum, good not great. I think it’s down to the Rockies, Marlins, and us for WC

I really think

this team can make a huge run if we make it to october!! we have the stuff!!

and the rockies lost dex fowler for a while possibly, he’s getting an mri on his knee

I hope they keep adding on

Back to the Braves- was there a reason McLouth/LaRoche didn’t start?

McLouth tweeked his hammy in BP. LaRoche got the night off to let Infante get a start in…he’s also 0-7 against Lannan.

oh. any update on Nate? He okay? LaRoche makes sense, but the Nate tweaking sounds scary

it sounds like its still just a little sore since the LA series.

okay. thanks

Churchy has been fine in the leadoff spot tho. And against 2 lefties is even more impressive.

I’m starting to like Church leading off and playing center.

Yeah, it was a lefty starter, and LaRoche sort of got platooned.

4-1 Dodgers

Okay, im gonna stop now.

At least the Pirates aren’t good for nothing.

Please, don’t. I am enjoying all these runs against the Giants.

Cory Rasmus ended up with a no hitter

what is his pitchig style??
Is he a flame thrower or a crafy pitcher

idk

but hes 22…almost 23 in a rookie league. So maybe we shouldnt get too crazy about him just yet.

9 ininngs? GREAT! We got mad love today in the minor leagues.

nope. only 7, but still. and he only had one walk. in other news, BJones had a walkoff HR

yeah i saw that. he’s workin hard for a september call up.

And no Heyward yet again tonight =…( damn rain.

BJONES??! I’m sensing a call here soon come september..

how many guys can be on your team after the roster expands? Isnt it like 32 or something?

don’t know but off the top of my head I can think of a lot who deserve

yea plus Buddy looked really sharp

just some advice for future posting

if you wanna add to a previous comment, hit the “+ reply” button below the comment. It makes things MUCH easier to read

FYF actually homered off Scherzer. He has as many HRs in a Mets uniform as he had in a Braves uniform this season. HE’S TURNED THE CORNER

come back next week when we go to NY

I knew

he was a Met all along..

It's like in the old 80's professional wrestling

I half expect him to rip off his Mets jersey to reveal a Braves one, hit David Wright with a steel chair and go running back into the Braves dugout while being showered with boos from the Shi.. Citi Field faithful.

anyone see where gwinnett is going to be on MLB Network

I was able to watch them on Peachtree TV last night (Monday) and they will be also televising them again Thursday night.
It will be nice to see how Huddy does.

great win for the Braves. see everybody later

I agree! Let’s keep it going……..So much fun to watch!!

The Phillies

should be pissing their pants right now thinking about playing us this week..

So ESPN just previewed the Sunday Night Baseball match-up

Between the Braves and Phillies.

And yes, they showed at least one shot of Jeff Francoeur hitting in a Braves uniform. I’d understand if the trade was like a week ago, but you’re “the worldwide leader in sports.” Someone should have been on top of that highlight package.

a week?

Try nearly a month and a half ago.

Someone has poor reading comprehension issues.

+1

Hook-ed onn Pa-hon-iks has not worked for him.

Go getem Braves!

The Braves must regain the same winning attitude, they had in the 1990’s,when they had Smoltz,Maddox,Glavin,Gant,Justice,Chipper, etc. And the captains of the team, need to make sure, the promising youngsters on the team are raised with the right attitude. Get the right attitude Braves:“win, win, win, and win again.”All misbeliefs such as " I can’t", must be eliminated."The Phillies, are not a better team. The Dodgers, are not a better team, nor the Yankees, nor the Red Sox. We, the Atlanta Braves, are the best team in baseball ! ! " Without that daily mind set, FORGET IT .

I still wonder why poor Boone Logan can’t be trusted with an 8-1 lead. The last time he picthed was tuesday, august 4th for Pete Smith’s sake.

Were saving him for situations that call for someone to come in and shut it down.
