Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 8/1

Gwinnett 15, Columbus 4

  • R. Gorecki 4-6 2 2B, 3B, 2 RBI
  • C. Burke 4-6 2 2B, RBI
  • B. Jones 3-6 2B, 2 RBI, 2K
  • A. Colina 3-5 2 HR(5), 5 RBI, BB
  • J. Reyes 7IP 5H 0R 1BB 1K

An offensive explosion from Gwinnett! The team put together a total of 21 hits with 10 of them going for extra bases. JoJo Reyes pitched pretty well, inducing a lot of groundouts and not walking guys. He only threw 80 pitches but I assume he is still on a strict count. This is definitely a nice way to start the final month of the season.

Montgomery @ Mississippi - RAIN

Kinston 7, Myrtle Beach 0

  • M. Fisher 2-4 K
  • CJ Lee 1-3 2B, K

There actually some decent pitching performances from our minor league games tonight. Some of them were against us. Kinston's starting pitcher left the game after striking out one batter and then the relief corps came in and shut the Pelicans down for the rest of the game.

Asheville 3, Rome 7 - Completed in 6 innings due to rain

  • Y. Campusano 2-3 2 RBI, BB
  • L. Sumoza 4-4 2 2B, 4 RBI
  • R. Delgado 6IP 6H 3R 0BB 7K

Yoel Campusano finished July hitting .348/.397/.518 and it looks like he is picking up where he left off to start August. Luis Sumoza has posted consecutive sub .600 OPS months. May is the only month he has been over .700 for year (.793). He hasn't hit any homers since May either. Hopefully this is the start of a turnaround for him. July was the best month of the season for Randall Delgado who posted a 3.00 ERA and struck out 28 batters in 27 innings. His walks were still high (15) but he is inducing ground balls pretty well and looks like he is turning his season around a bit.

Danville 0, Bristol 1 - Game 1 - 9 Innings (these were extra)

  • C. Masters 8IP 4H 1R 1BB 8K

Chris Masters came out dealing in this game. Too bad the Bristol pitchers were a little bit better. Actually Masters only run was unearned (an error by the catcher led to the run). Masters has a 47/4 K/BB in 39.2 IP so far this season. I have been told by team that these are acceptable stats.

Danville 4, Bristol 1 - Game 2 - 7 Innings

  • LV Ware 3-3 2B, RBI, CS(2)
  • RSF 1-3 2B, RBI
  • B. Oberholtzer 6.1IP 4H 1R 0BB 7K

Here we have another excellent pitching performance that did not go to waste. Oberholtzer has been every bit as good as Masters with a 35/5 K/BB in 38IP and a 1.42 ERA. These two guys along with Teheran really give us some options going into next season. It feels like the Braves always have good LHP prospects and Oberholtzer and Masters are a testament to that.Lets hope they can carry it to the next level.

Is Yoel Campusano’s name Yoel or Joel? I’ve seen both. Just curious

also

when do you see the Delgado boys moving up? They seem to be doing well

I believe it is Yoel. At least thats how I believe he spells it. Most likely the proper english counterpart to his name is Joel but he just wants it spelled that way. And I doubt the Delgado’s will go anywhere this season. There is only a month left and neither guy has been really dominant for a long period of time. They are both young still and there is no glaring need to hurry them to Atlanta with the pitching we have already.

I will say that both of the baseball cards Campusano has had, last year with Danville and this year with Rome, have had Joel on them.

yeah, but I think this is a recent thing because His player page had him as Joel till about 3 weeks ago and it suddenly changed to Yoel. I dunno for sure though.

Yeah, it’s always interesting when guys decide they want to go by something else. I remember when JC Boscan was Jean.

I think I remember you mentioning that.

Is he a different guy from the Albaro who played for Danville last year?

That’s who the cube lists him as.

Same guy, but I’ve never seen him called Albaro anywhere.

so does minor league splits
Why would Reyes be on a pitch count?

He’s still rehabbing from his injury.

Omar Infante will rehab in Rome Tuesday night

Just saying.

Another homer for Heyward tonight

in his first at-bat

and a walk!

who is this Heyward fellow you guys keep talking about?

Is he supposed to be good or something?

intentional walk

and that’s exactly what I’d do if I was managing against him. Chances are at this point that he’ll do at least as much damage if you pitch to him.

I happened to deliver some pizza to some West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (Mariner’s org) players last night and they were just raving about Heyward and Freeman, because they just finished playing them. Rode the elevator up with Greg Halman, but I didn’t really talk to him or the other guy on the elevator, the guys I delivered too were really cool though, and we talked baseball for a minute. My mind drew a total blank though when I was trying to remember what prospects were with that team, and I forgot Phillippe Aumont and Carlos Triunfel were with that club. I’m hoping to get another delivery to them in the next couple days because that was a pretty cool.

LOL.

What a good pizza guy story!
