I suppose a pitiful game deserves a pitiful recap. I didn't watch this one, I was out on the town tonight, but what snippets of the game I caught on random TV's looked pretty pitiful. On first blush looking at the box score, it looks like we really missed a starting first baseman, second baseman, and shortstop. Until we get that full compliment of starters back, I don't know what to think about this team. I need to see that starting lineup out there, and then I'll decide if we can make a run at either the division or the wild card.
Right now, I'd say we miss both by a few games. Some folks have to get hot, and stay hot. It may be the booze talking, but I'm looking forward to having Rochey back in the lineup. He needs to get out of BWI, though. More riveting post-deadline analysis tomorrow.
Anyway, fill in your own comments about the game. This is a make your own recap, recap.

I’ll throw in a bit, as I watched the first 5 IPs before I had to go pick my GF up…
Schmidt looked much more like a pitcher than I’d ever seen him before. Think part of it might have been the weak ATL lineup, but part of it legitimately was not. Working both sides, changing eye levels and speeds, he had guys off balance. He definitely worked around the heart of the order, but you take what the other team gives you, I guess.
Hard to root for the opposing pitcher, but hard to root against Jason after all he’s been through…

You are absoulutely right Yakker. He didnt look like a pitcher that missed the last two seasons. He was on. Changing speeds, hitting his spots and keeping the Braves offense off balance.
But what really fustrated me while I was watching the game was, Schmidt at times was hitting 87mph with his fastball. COME ON!! He was clocking 87 from the start of the game up until he felt in the 6th inning. Even the our announcers said that the Dodgers organization are aware of his lack of speed. We are off to a bad start already. We lost 2 out of 3 from the Marlins, We got 6 more games with the blues in the blue, and we our middle infielders are out. I am a little worried

Exactly
And when he did throw the FB to keep guys honest, it was up in the zone, where the hitters couldn’t do too much damage.

Umm...
I’m sorry, but one hit in 6 innings against a guy with a BP fastball is pretty pitiful.

Apparently
His CB was filthy. Chipper was quoted after the game as saying there was little difference between Schmidt’s FB and change, but the CB was much, much improved.
Yakker - August 1, 2009
But still...
A guy with exactly one plus pitch going mowing down the lineup for 6 innings? Not gonna cut it.

The Braves were showing off their warning track power tonight. They hit several balls hard, but they went right to the outfielders, or seemed to just die in the gaps. There were times when they did look pitiful at the plate, but as i said, thye hit a lot of hard fly balls right at the outfielders.
10-4 - August 1, 2009
Irrelevant.
Don’t you know that from the KJ discussions?
MichaelProcton - August 1, 2009
Pitiful is just not a word you want to see in a recap of your team’s effort of a game, but unfortunately it’s accurate. Like 10-4 said, we hit a ton of fly balls for outs, but they managed to get 12 hits thorough the defense, we should have done better.
It’s not like we didn’t have opportunities – we got 6 walks (and only gave up 1) and to start the 7th with back to back hits by Diory and Barbaro (yes, you read that right) the top of the order failed to get even 1 run across. We simply did not take advantage of the chances we were given. We were 0-6 with RISP and left 10 men on base. So, it wasn’t all fly ball failures.
Granted, Schmidt has his game on and from what the announcers said, was literally pitching for his Dodger life last night after his recent outings…but our aggressiveness/impatience at the plate once again let him off the hook of having to throw a lot of pitches more than once.
I hope Lowe can pitch well tonight.
Phillies and Marlins BOTH won last night. We really need to take this series at home if we can, and the next 2 games will NOT be easy.

Not enough coffee yet ugh....
…Fixed: ….start the 7th with back to back hits by Diory and
BarbaroNorton.And, we had a 2 runners on in the 1st, 3rd & 4th too before this.

LaRoche/Chipper comments:
This makes me think the chemistry of the team will not be hurt and may even be improved with LaRoche coming back. MB’s blog had this about Adam being stuck in Baltimore last night because of weather.
I think these two are going to enjoy being on the same team together again, maybe that sense of “fun” will be contagious and help gel this team a little more here in the late summer.

Chipper has a plane?
Yakker - August 1, 2009
Even with our full lineup this team is not a great hitting team. We’re only four games out of the wild card but we’ll have to play well for the rest of the season. So far we’ve only played well for a week and a half at the most.

this
MichaelProcton - August 1, 2009
This worst part was the amount of times we walked: six (!) times! And we can’t even manufacture one run!
But, there’s still two more games to play. We could still win 2 of 3. Hopefully Prado, Esco, & Laroche can jump in today’s lineup and make it happen.
beeswax - August 1, 2009
Escobar not playing today – Prado may.
LaRoche for sure if he gets out of BWI..LOL.
