Per K-Ros:
The Phillies have reached agreement on a trade that would bring them left-hander Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco from the Indians for Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson, according to major-league sources.
My first thought is that this gives them a very tough 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation. My second thought was "I wonder if this will put pressure on the Braves or anyone else in the division to make a big move."
I say we keep standing pat. Maybe get a reliever, but keep standing pat. We'll get our Cliff Lee when Tim Hudson returns in a few weeks.

I know it helps their team, but we need to stand pat for now. Don’t deal one of our good prospects for temporary help when already 8 games back. Huddy will certainly help and last night was a fluke, nothing more.

The NL East was an uphill battle as it was. None of the wildcard teams have done anything substantial, so I’m not terribly worried. The Braves control their destiny and I think are the most complete team right now competing for a wild card spot.
Before acquiring Lee, the Phillies had the third best rotation in the NL East. IMO, after acquiring Lee, the Phillies still have the third best rotation in the NL East.

If they have their offense and Hamels, Halladay, Lee, Happ, and Myers/Blanton as a starting rotation next year there is no doubt in my mind they’ll win this year and next year. I don’t want to live with that being a Braves fan in the Philadelphia area, and neither should any Braves fan…I’d much rather not have to wait for the Phillies run of dominance to end.

I just hope Frank doesnt view this as," I got to make a move". We made all of our moves already early in season. McClouth and Chruch (not liking Chruch so far) add a reliever, Omar comes back, Caryle is looking good down in triple A,Campillo hopfully returns to form, Timmy in the bullpen or if Kawakami continues to struggle(control) move him to the bullpen and move Tim to the rotation. I am not afraid at all. Would like another bat but if we cant this year get one next year.

We need a bat
We really need to try and find a big bat. The Phils already have the best offense in the majors. There rotation is still not to the level that ours is, but Lee will help them to win some close games when their offense isn’t hitting. I still think our rotation is the best in the NL and most likely the majors and with Hudson coming back and either him or Kawakami becoming a bullpen pitcher I like that improvement in our pen. But we’ll continue to lose close ball games like last night if we don’t go get a big bat. I don’t know who might be out there but I’m hoping that Wren can find somebody for right field because Church is just aleft handed hitting Francouer who doesn’t have the disappoint that Francouer came with.

Since the Trade Church has 6 hits, Francouer has 17. Church has 1 homer, Francouer 3. Church’s BA has gone from .275 to .273. Francouer’s has gone from .253-.262. Francouers OBP has gone from .285 to .292. Church’s has gone from .327 to .337. The OBP is the only aberation. And I really believe its a product of him batting mostly 8th in front of the pitcher’s spot…

this move does not scare me THAT much. You still have to win a 3 game series. Plus, Lee is on my fantasy team, which means i’ve been following his fantasy numbers pretty closely. He has been somewhat shaky this year, but obviously that lineup will probably help his numbers as well as him pitching in the NL. I hope the 1-2 punch you’re referring to is Lee and Happ, because Cole Hamels has been mostly garbage this season.

All i’m saying is that when he was acquired last year, I remember him being touted as the kind of guy that would turn the phillies rotation into a solid one. Someone above said we control our destiny in the wildcard race and that is a true fact.
Equally true is that we have to somehow get past the Marlins, Rockies, Giants and Cubs or Cards.
I don’t like our chances at all and think we should be aggressively trying to improve the team with a top drawer set up man for the Bullpen and/or a RH bat with power.
We have good pieces that can be bundled as a package.
I do, however, fully agree that we should by no means gut our future by dealing our top few prospects.

I would make a Kotchman and some other lesser prospect for Martinez swap. Kotchman is a viable starter for the Indians at 1B and he will come relatively cheap next year. I would not give up Freeman. Freeman’s upside is too great.
Martinez would be a fine addition to the middle our lineup, but only for 200+ games. I assume he would also be a major defensive downgrade at 1B from Kotch.
I would love it if we could get Martinez, but Freeman is damn close to untouchable.

So the phils got Lee.
I’m not so sure we should stand pat. Basically every team ahead of us is doing something the Phillies are doing something in the NL East lead. The Giants already got Garko and are looking to get Sanchez as well. The Cubs and the Rockies are already rumored to be looking to add pieces and we can’t expect the Brewers to continue this decline and not add any type of starter.
It would be nice for us to get a bat. Heck even a reliever, I’m just not sold on us staying pat.
V-Mart would look nice as our 1B. Yes we lose some Defensive prowess over there but our Line Up finally will have that #4 hitter to go behind Chipper.
Who do we trade for him?
I have no idea, maybe start with:

Cody Johnson
One of our A ball Pitchers
Kotchman as a throw in
I’m not sure but i know it could get done without giving up Freeman. They want pitching and we have Medlen as a ML ready type and tons in the Lower A ranks

I’d like to say that it sucks but it’s very good. They don’t even really need outstanding pitching, just good enough to hold opponents to 5-6 runs. That offense is ridiculous.

I’m bummed about the Phillies’ acquisition of Lee. But I’m curious to see how he’ll pitch in that ball park. He’s a fly ball pitcher and that field is not known to keep a lot of long balls within the yard. I just can’t believe how they didn’t give up any of their top 3 prospect, or Happ in that deal. They made out very well in that deal…
Seems like a lot of folks here are suggesting that we trade for Victor Martinez. My question would be, where would the Braves play him? No way, we’d move Mac and it’s not like we have the DH position. I think our biggest concern is our bullpen. Hudson could be a possibility, may not be a bad idea to let him work his arm back to strength. Michael Wuertz of the A’s is also pitching lights out right now.

But the point was to show that the guy is a fly ball pitcher (which I still believe that he is, even with his recent stats). You tell me that he’s got less than two seasons of being a ground ball pitcher, so does that then make him a ground baller? Do you no longer take into consideration all those previous years since ’02? If Pujols had a season where he hit 10 HRs and started spraying line drives all over the field, and then continued that over the first half of the following season, would you guys define him as a line drive hitter and overlook all the power numbers from previous seasons? I doubt that you would.

it all depends. If a pitcher has shown a recent change in style, you have to concede that they are no longer what they once were. Barry Zito was once an ace-caliber pitcher. He hasn’t been for a couple of seasons now, but according to your posted reasoning, he should still be considered that because he once was that.

Yes, I see your point…and my example with Pujols is a little exaggerated as in the case of Zito, who is nowhere near his old form back in Oakland. But at the same time, can we conclude at this point that Lee has made such a drastic change? Has he added in a splitter or sinker into his repertoire that has generated all these grounders? I can be very wrong but last I remember, he had a number of fastballs, circle change and perhaps a curve ball.
