Man, call this the rehab game. Jeff Bennett, Buddy Carlyle and James Parr all made appearances and only Carlyle pitched well tossing a scoreless inning. Alvin Colina was the only other Brave to collect more than 1 hit. We were up against Philip Humber for crying out loud.
West Tenn 1, Mississippi 4 - Game 1 7 Innings
Jose Ortegano comes out DEALING in his first AA start. You know, for a guy that probably never touches 90 on a radar gun the guy actually strikes out a decent amount of batters. Another thing to remember about him is that he doesn't turn 22 for another week. Not bad at all. Also Jason Heyward is good.
West Tenn 0, Mississippi 1 - Game 2 7 Innings
Jason Heyward is now hitting .443 in AA.
I didn't put it up there, but Cole Rohrbough had another bad outing in this game giving up 5 runs in 4 innings. He was doing fine until the 5th inning and then walked a guy, surrendered a double, a single and then a homer and then was pulled from the game. He just seems to lose confidence or fall apart when one thing doesn't go his way. I really don't know what to make of his season so far.
Rome 4, Kannapolis 1
I really wonder if the Delgado guys try to match each other every time out? Whatever it is they posted consecutive excellent starts. Adam Milligan is going to make me keep writing about him as he has now homered in 4 straight games and is batting a Heyward-like .500 in his last 10 games. I f he keeps this up he is probably going to catapult himself into our post season top 10 lists.
Danville 6, Burlington 4
Mycal Jones is keeping up his impressive run with a 9 games hitting streak that has seen him knock 11 XBH in that time. In 100 ABs in July he has a .942 OPS and is looking like a good pick up in the 4th round. The only issue I have with him is that he is already 22 years old and I think he needs to be pushed up to Rome, but I don't think there is room for him right now. Tyler Stovall kept up his erratc behavior in this one with lots of Ks and walks. On the season his line is 26.2IP/33BB/35K.

I really like the CJ line. Not because of the hits or anything but the 2 Walks. Hope he keeps that up
Also Kimbrel apparently was mad at the world tonight. 5K’s in 2 IP? wonder how long before he is our closer this guy is dealing.
Some nice performances all around except our rehabers in AAA. Hopefully they stay there

CJ has been taking his share of walks this season, and in fact the only person in our entire minor league system who has more walks is Matt Young in Mississippi. Until he starts striking out aboout 1/3 less than he does now I am going to be reticent.
Also Craig Kimbrel leads the minors in K/9 with 15.9 per 9 innings. Unreal.

The Adam Dunn comparisons have go to stop. He strikes out more than Dunn and walks less. There is no one currently in the majors who struck out in 33% of their ABs in any full season in the minors. Not even Mark Reynolds.
I am not saying he is going to crash, but his contact rate makes it VERY likely that if he is going to struggle against better pitching.

the thing is everytime (on this board) the Dunn comparison is brought up its shot down…becuase of waht yondaime says… CJ strikes out more and doesnt take walks (althoguh his BB% has jumped like 4 pts this year….so thats definate improvement.
I dont blame you for thinking it, because it definately has been passed around… but it just doesnt work that well. He might be Dunn one day if he gets his contact up and BBs up…but i doubt it… The power and defense is definately comprable.

Except...
Adam Dunn put up really good numbers in the minors. The most he ever struck out in a season in the minors was 101 times. In 4 minor league seasons his numbers were, .304/.425/.525/.950

but those 101 Ks were in 128 games… so it certainly wasnt good…around 130 for 162 game season (it less than Cody…but thats not saying much)

I wasn't implying that it was good...
Just that it wasn’t as bad as CJ, who struck out 177 times in 127 games in class A last year.
I think the comparison is there, it’s just not really that good of one. They both have huge power and strikeout a ton, but Cody probably has more power and will strikeout a lot more.

seems as though the Braves organization as a whole uses AA as the stepping stone into the majors and AAA for all of its AAAA players.

AA has become the home of prospects in recent years and it is general feeling among baseabll type folk that A+ to AA is the most difficult transition in baseball and if you can handle that you can probably handle the pros. Occasionally you get those AAAA type players who are roster filler and that is sort of what AAA is. Just a roster holding pen. But even if he starts next year at AA you may see him go to AAA if he dominates AA and there isn’t anywhere in Atl for him.
The scary thing is he has been every bit as good in July as he was in Rome.

With the disappointments this season from Rohrbough and Locke, the poor starts of guys like Kimbrell and Devall, and the lack of any prospect at AA or higher once Hanson was promoted, I was starting to fear that the organizational pitching well was drying up.
But with the success of the Delgados two, the way Spruill has turned it on, and the continued success of Ortegano (among a few others) I think we’re still in good shape. Drafting Mike Minor helps, so we should be able to find the arms for 2011 and 2012.

I feel like the lower minors are teeming with guys who will be good. The problem is they are in the Low minors now so they won’t get a lot of national recognition. But there is a great core of guys down there with Teheran, Spruill, Hoover, Milligan, Jones and Hale along with our good looking young catchers Matt Kennelly, Christian Bethancourt and Braeden Schlehuber.

One weird thing did happen
Cory Gearrin got the save for the Pelicans, but he struggled a bit, giving up 3 hits and a run. He’d been dominating there both before his promotion and following his demotion. Guess no one is perfect.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I heard that he’s got an almost side arm motion, which fools hitters pretty well along with his frisbee slider. We’ll have to see if the odd delivery will keep fooling players as he goes up the ladder.

Nope, you’re right, he’s got a very low 3/4 delivery and I think that’s a huge part of things. The other is the shock of a guy who’s 4’3", 97 pounds throwing that hard.

I know he’s short, b ut i didn’t get the impression that he’s slight. Never seen him in person, but on milb.com he’s listed at 5-10, 205 lbs… Now considering they usually add inches and subtract weght from guys in the official listing, I always figured he was pretty pudgy. Even if those numbers are right, 205 is definitely not skinny when you’re only 5-10.

but it showed exactly why he is striking out this many people. He’s got a mid-90’s fastball and one of the most impressive sliders I’ve ever seen. The thing has a ton of movement and a really sharp break, along with being pretty hard. The problem he’s obviously having is that he’s not used to having to throw it in the strike zone and now the more advanced hitters are laying off balls out of the zone that less advanced hitters would lay off of, hence the huge walk totals.

im generally worried about guys with nasty sliders as it seems to be a precursive to arm problems, specifically when thrown from a low 3/4 arm angle…does anyone know if this should be a real concern or not?

Was at the MB/PNats game
Most quiet game I’ve ever seen in my entire life. More to come on it much later.
But Kimbrel’s stuff was incredible that night,a nd after his second inning-ending K, he had the most happy look on his face on his way back to the bullpen. Rorhbough was really pissed when he was getting the hook in the 5th, but Rocket had no choice – as mentioned, he simply lost it after walking the best hitter in Marrerro. Disturbing was the sheer lack of production from the top two hitters in the lineup that night, Miles and Gress. And one last thing to take note was that the Pelicans were leading 6-0 in the second inning, and pretty much went useless afterwards, and held on – a win’s a win, but I don’t think it should’ve been this hard.
Attending tonight’s game as well, weather permitting.

And yet, the Pelicans can’t even give him, well anything. He was wearing the jersey of a previous Pelicans with #20, with the name plate completely missing, and his helmet was a red/black Braves helmet with no A emblem on it, with #10 on it. And he was sharing bats with Miles and Lee all night.

Hey man, if you’re up there, head over to the park early. They don’t have a problem with you going in and watching batting practice. The guys start up around 3 or 3:30. They’ll ask you to leave at about 5:45, and you just go outside, get your ticket and come back in at 6. It’s always fun watching BP and the guys are very relaxed and willing to talk for a while then. Well, Gress wore 20 earlier in the year with MB, but I’m sure they took the nameplate off when he got sent down. They carry extra jerseys for situations like his, where he gets called up to the team on a road trip. The nameplate’s not on there cause theyu’re on the road. The helmet is the one from Danville, where he was number 20. No clue why he’s using that one. And with the bats, it’s possible his stuff got sent to Myrtle Beach instead of to Winston-Salem or Woodbridge, and that’s why he has to borrow.

Campusano is not far behind MIlligan. The Rome 2B, is hitting .500 in his last 10 games. He is 21-42 with 3 doubles, 2 triples, and 3 HRs. Also, 4 BBs and only 2 Ks.
The closer at Rome, Jaye Chapman has been in 19 games, pitched 22.1 innings and has an ERA of 0.40 (that is right!). He has 13 SVs, 4 BBs, and 29 Ks. Holding opponents to a .113 BA. Not bad work.
