Talking Chop

Could a trade be brewing between the Braves and Dodgers

The Braves have been pretty quiet so far leading up to the trade deadline, but if history is any guide, they usually don't just stand pat. We get this twitter post from Ed Price at Fan House:

Lots of scouts checking out #Dodgers Double-A team. #Braves had two people there, and Atlanta has the pitching LA could use.

I passed on a note earlier in the day that Tim Hudson is on track (so far) to return by August 15th. This could be the Braves just testing the water or making sure all their bases are covered in case someone does call and ask for one of our pitchers, or (in a more exciting world) it could be the precursor to something big between the Braves and the Dodgers -- who have a history of deadline deals. If it was one scout from Atlanta I could dismiss it, but two scouts.

Either way this is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Word has it that the Dodgers are still in on Halladay

Maybe the Braves would be brought in as a 3rd team. I won’t try to work out how all the pieces would fit.

Ummm why in the world would the Dodgers want Holliday they already have four good outfielders.

That would be Roy Halladay.. You know.. the pitcher for the Blue Jays… :D

Wow I know it was going to happen to me sooner or later, My bad Andy I surely appologize.

haha

no worries, I made a similar mistake talking to a friend a couple of days ago. It happens.

Good news

Any time you can swing a deal with Ned Colletti, it’s a good thing.

It can’t be JV going to LA.

Who would they be after?

They need a SP, so it would have to be Vasquez, right? Kawakami isn’t really an upgrade for them, and we aren’t trading anyone else they would want.

JV has a full no-trade to all West teams.

Right. Then this is just rumblings. There isn’t another good fit

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ros&cid=498&stn=true&sid=t498

The team we were watching. Lambo is their #5 spec. Gonzo maybe?

i doubt we trade gonzo. not unless we get another bullpen arm from another team first.

Lambo is a stud

really? well i’d rather get a pitcher or infielder than ANOTHER outfielder if we trade Gonzo or anyone else.

We already have McLouth, Heyward and Schafer as our center pieces, along with potentially Cody Johnson in 2 years or so. We also have Church and Diaz who work a nice platoon.

And if we could get Lambo for Gonzo that would just add to Wrens legacy.

Which is the stud part, exactly?

And Bell is their #10 and a switch hitting 3B

22 years old, 9 homers, OPSing .848…not bad. But he’s made 16 errors?

He also has knee problems, and you have to be careful with that.

Also at AA

Justin Sellers, who occasionally pops up on hotsheets, and things. I’m surprised he’s not considered one of their top 10 prospects.

Baseball America, by the way, listed Lambo as their top prospect before the season.

Justin Lindblom is on their pitching staff, and is their #4 prospect (again according to baseballamerica).

Scott Elbert is their #5 and also at AA.

So maybe the Braves are just covering their bases in case the phone rings.

Hopefully

this is a deal of Vazquez for a ML player plus a good prospect or two and not Vazquez for a group of minor leaguers.

It’s Gonzalez if anybody, cant be Vazquez and nobody else makes sense

Vazquez can block any trade to the NL and AL West

Isn't can a conditional word?
If its Gonzo

I would be kinda happy. just hope we can bring back some goodies.

That would be funny because he would be the second player traded right before we play that team

Would Gonzo be enough to get Juan Pierre?

I’d shoot myself if we traded away Gonzo and all we got back was Juan Pierre.

Why would you want Juan Pierre, he had a good 50 game stretch that’s it. Elbert for Gonzalez would be nice

He's got an incredible work ethic

the kid wants his ABs back.

I could care less about his work ethic, his contract is an albatross

Yikes

I don’t see how the Dodgers are paying that much to a 4th OF.

funny thing is they’re also paying Andruw 5 million to produce for the Rangers.

“kid”?

He's got a baby face.
Wait a minute...

You’re being serious about this?

Maybe an OF?

I always thought we matched up well with the Dodgers: we need OF’s, they got four OF’s, while they need SP, and we got an extra one or two of them. I wonder if the Dodgers would move Kemp or Ethier for Vasquez?

once again Vazquez CANT be traded to the NL West or AL West

You don’t think he might waive a no-trade clause to play for a sure playoff team? The Dodgers could extend him a year even.

He wants to be close to his family in Puerto Rico, going to LA defeats that purpose

Not to mention

We are in a play off race ourselves. Only thing is we just need the Phillies to come back to earth.

The difference between 30% odds and 99.9% odds is pretty large.

indeed it is

but the fact that we are not that far out and would be closer if not for some foolishness in todays game coupled with our closeness to PR i think he would prefer to stay.

only thing that would make him closer is playing in FL

He’s still playing for a good team in a playoff race and he’s very close to his family, he’s not going to go out west

Did he tell you so?

Has already demanded a trade from arizona for this reason. He might waive it next year at the deadline because then he’d only be there for half a season but we won’t trade him at next year’s deadline. Also you guys dont have to act immature and insuate that I said he told me so, if you just use common sense then you’d realize he’s not going out west

I can’t imagine that he’s gonna really be going to Puerto Rico THAT many times duringg the season? I’d say he might veto a trade to the Giants or Dbacks, but if I’m him, looking at the Dodgers’ record, I’m seeing visions of a ring at the end of the season…It might be enough to make him want to go there. I dunno, just sayin’. People have a way of changing their minds when push comes to shove…

this

I challenge you to find one report where he says he would waive his no trade clause to west coast teams, then you can make these claims

He doesnt need to.

The point is, just because has a NTC, doesnt mean he will definitely use it. What is so hard to understand about that?

As I recall

he has stated that he would use his NTC in the media, don’t recall where, but he has also made it clear he wants to stay in Atlanta. He loves Bobby. I’m pretty sure McCann’s the Man is right.

remember

its most likely Gonzo not Javy.

Not Vasquez

I’ve been hearing alot of rumblings about Vasquez being traded.Well I hope he’s not traded for one ,the guy has been real good for us this year. The Brave fans I think are putting all their eggs in one basket and by that I mean they are banking on Hudson coming back and being just as good as Vasquez.I just don’t see Hudson being as good as Vasquez and that’s no knock on Hudson.Hudson won’t get it done like him being that he’s coming off Tommy John surgery.Just today he gave up 3 runs in his rehab start,I just hope they don’t trade the guy he has been doing his job and no thanks to the offense. If he is traded Hudson will be in line to step in and he doesn’t have it as of yet to get it done like Vasquez.Plus we have been playing better as of late and I don’t see the Braves bowing out at least I hope not.On top of all that Cox went on and on during the off season how he always wanted Vasquez to play for the Braves well now we have him and to trade him now especially with him being as dominant as he has been would be unexplainable.I mean how can Cox begin to explain to Vasquez he has been traded after all that talk during the press conference they held together. It would be expected if he was playing like Reyes but he’s not he has been just as good as J.J. and to trade him would hurt the Braves I think.

First off, it’s Vazquez. Second, nobody is mentioning him in trade possibilities because he hasn’t been good in fact it’s the exact opposite. He’s been so good that his trade value is at an all time high. We have 4 other guys who are performing very well and Vazquez is eating up a large chunk of the payroll. He’s in trade rumors because he’s the only one with a big salary that has trade value so we accomplish two things. Get quality young talent in return and clear salary. We won’t move him until we’re sure Hudson will be fine and there’s a 99.9% chance that we don’t trade Javy until the off-season.

KJ and maybe JV ...... but for what ?

What would the Braves expect to get that would help ?
Bring Broxton back to GA …. not likely (elbow)
Schmidt comes back to ATL ? very doubtful …. with the logjam at SP and Hudson coming back and LA needs him too much.
Manny …. not with that big contract and even larger ego – LA would LOVE to hand off that contract but there wont be any takers – just like Andruw’s phat deal.
Holliday – no (LA would not give up his slugging %),

I could see some value taking Kemp and Leech for KJ because they both have contracts for 2010, and KJ is set for a big time arbitration raise this winter.
Javy is likely going back to the AL – but will Seattle would give up Mel Stocker (From AA) instead of that hot/cold hitting OF Clement (whom Seattle is shopping).

Please explain why they would want Kelly, and for the final time Vazquez will NOT go to the dodgers

how do you know? they do have the best record in baseball. the weather in SoCal is much nicer than Hotlanta. are you guys buddies?

Once again he has said countless times that he doesn’t want to go out west because he wants to be close to his family in Puerto Rico. You don’t have to be buddies with him, you just need a basic understanding of world geography.

Jeff Clement has never played the outfield in his entire career.

He already demanded a trade from Arizona for this exact reason earlier in his career

Just when I'm going to check their prospects and see which ones are in AA

Yall have them all posted here. Good work, team!

They're probably trading for Vazquez

…just kidding, McCann ;)

Haha it’s alright. It just gets frustrating when you point it out and people continually ignore the facts

No I know, I understand.

On a more relevant note, I wouldn’t mind at all if we traded Gonzo…I like him a lot, but he’s not untouchable.

Well, considering the healthy strike he just took today

I would imagine that just killed any chance we had of trading him for anything of equal or greater value.

How bad was it? Didn’t catch the game today

Looked worse than the Braves are making it out to be. We’ll see.

I didn’t think it looked too bad. Got him on the forearm, as opposed to the hand or wrist, so at least there’s some padding. Maybe just needed some ice and a bit of rest and he’ll be okay.

Didn't sound bad the way they described it on the radio.

They said he didn’t even want to come out.

And the facts are...

That he’s a human being, thus, he has the power of choice! Not to mention the capacity to change his mind.

especially if we got a scott elbert in return

Who do we want of the guys at AA?

I mistakenly said that Lindblom was at AA when he’s since been promoted to AAA. Still, I’d love to have him, because he doesn’t walk many guys, doesn’t give up a lot of good contact, and would be ready for 2011 (when we’ll need some pitching). I’m not sure how common it is to trade a relief pitcher in his walk year for a solid SP prospect, but if we could get him for Gonzo, I’d go for it.

Josh Bell is a bad defensive third baseman with knee problems, but he’s a switch hitter with decent power…I don’t know what kind of trade deal he’d end up involved in, but if it was Bell and some high-level relief prospect for Gonzo, that might be pretty good.

Obviously, it’d be a coup to get Andrew Lambo, as he’s widely viewed as the top prospect in the Dodger’s organization. I don’t know what it would take to pry him away-Vazquez probably, but Vazquez isn’t going to go to LA because of all the reasons mentioned above, and might not be sufficient anyhow. But then again, Lambo’s path appears blocked because of the huge contract Manny has, and the fact that they have Kemp and Ethier under control for several more years. There’s almost no way we get him, but he’d be a great LF to go with Schafer and Heyward in 2 years.

Scott Elbert apparently also got promoted to AAA. Epic fail on my part, earlier. Apparently, he posts both ridiculous K rates and ridiculous walk rates. So, he’s still got some smoothing out to do. But he’s logged some time in the major leagues, which may have dropped his price down a bit. I don’t know if we’re interested in him or not.

Vazquez

If Vazquez has to be traded I hope the Braves don’t get screwed like they got screwed in that deal with the Angels for Casey and a relief pitcher.I hope they get good prospects are keep him until they can get a better offer.

Please shut up. How did we get screwed in the Tex deal. Kotchmans defense alone has saved hundreds of runs and that can be more or just as valuble as a first baseman who hits 30 bombs. We didn’t get screwed in that trade, because we got a cost controlled major leaguer for 2 in a half months of a rental.

I simply don’t read this guy’s comments anymore. Waste of time, because he seldom has anything interesting to say, and it’s hard to read because he doesn’t put spaces following punctuation. He also doesn’t separate into paragraphs or anything, and doesn’t correct his typographical errors, so he’s ridiculous hard to read. Basically, the cost/benefit aspect of reading his comments comes out negative.

“Hundreds of runs”? Seriously?

Its called figurative speech. Seriously!

Why not Mobile?

They are playing six straight games against Mobile. Why should we assume the reports are correct and the Dodgers are the team we are scouting? The Dbacks may be looking at KJ to fill the void left by Felipe Lopez. Obviously I am just guessing, but it makes more sense than the countless posts about trading Javy to the West Coast when he has a no-trade clause.

Why would the DBacks trade prospects for an ML player, arent they rebuilding if anything?

It makes more sense than Vazquez going to the Dodgers, but considering Kelly is up for arbitration after this year and then a free agent the following year, it’s not a good fit. They’re 15 games under .500. Not the time for them to be giving up prospects.

...which he has the option to waive whenever he sees fit.

I just think the most logical explanation is that the braves are shopping a reliever for prospects. Dodgers are looking for bullpen help, braves can spare a guy like Gonzalez.

Doubtful !!!

Seriously doubt the Braves really make any moves, but if they do I believe they will be minor ones. Maybe for a bullpen pitch for KJ or something like that or they could move Gonzo perhaps but doubtful especially since he just got banged up in today’s game. I know they said nothing was wrong however, they always say x-rays are negative we will not know for sure until gonzo takes the hill again. Hey lets dump Moylan I swear if he comes into another game an gives up anything else he should be gone. Of course it could have something to do with the fact that he has pitched in 53+ games this year. True abot Vasquez he can block a trip to the West Coast an I just don’t think the Braves are comfortable enough yet that Huddy will be ready this season to jump right in an contribute.

Dodgers just don’t match up in a trade on our end either.
Time will tell only a few more days to wait & see.

Huddy wont be his self til next spring .

Remember how long it took moylan and gonzo to come back from Tommy John surgery . Plus i think its possible JV would take a cheaper contract to stay in Atlanta after he becomes a free agent . If anybody needs to go to LA its needs to be Lowe who came from there .

Everybody responds differently.
Oh, and wouldn't they have just resigned Lowe if they wanted him?
Twins are interested in kj..

What do the twins have to offer?

two words:

denard span

Hey, now!

Don’t get me all excited like that. I’d love to get that guy. That said, I have a hard time believing the Twins would give him up for KJ, even if their OF is overcrowded. But we can imagine how awesome it would be if they did.

Forgot about him..hmmm that'd be a steal
I think

These rumors will get killed pretty quick.

I think the guy that might have been getting moved was Gonzo. now he has a slight injury.

Of course he could come back in a couple of days and dominate and still get traded but im pretty sure he was the target.
