Yunel Escobar of the Atlanta Braves named the NL Player of the Week

Antics aside, avoiding the media aside, Yunel Escobar had a really good week, and received some credit for it by being named the National Week Player of the Week. While it was a short week, just four games, Escobar tied for the N.L. lead with two home runs and three doubles while batting .500 (7-for-14). He posted a 1.143 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage, along with four runs scored and eight RBIs. Believe it or not, Garret Anderson (.538, 1 HR, 2 RBI) was also considered.

Of course, Yunel did miss a key hit-and-run sign that may have cost the Braves their only loss this week, but who's really paying attention to things that don't show up in the box score anyway.

Yunel FTW

Frosted tips FTL

derp

what’s ‘FTW’ and ‘FTL’ ?

Excuse my lack of web-speak.

i think

FTW is For the win
and
FTL is For the loss

But im not sure.

I think I like the frosted tips. But who really cares? 90% of the time dude is wearing a hat.

this is correct

Yunel is awesome.

Frosted tips are not.

this is correct, too :-p
Go Yunel!!!

…..alll this talk about “avoiding the media”…….I didn’t even think dude spoke English.

Whose choice is that?

He’s been playing baseball professionally here for, what, five years?

Ah Crap

Now he is gonna think all his BS is acceptable. Booby will die from a coronary if Yunel keeps this up.

Keeps what up?

Solid D?
Solid O?
Winning us games?

p.s. Nobody is perfect. Far more good to focus on, as opposed to the bad.

Dont disagree but dude has some serious mental lapses. Bobby damn near died when he missed the hit and run.

I’m guessing they had to re-work the signs via the Mets. Honest mistake. He’s just a kid. Kids will make mistakes. But I think he’s learning from them.

that pitch was well inside also, dont think he would have put much of a swing on it anyway

maybe him missing the sign will help us in the long run.

yesterday, McLouth called time and cleared things up with Snitker at 3rd. i’d rather have a guy call time and get the sign than miss it.

Yes, the signs had to be changed…Frenchy knows all our signs and Church knows all of theirs. As Joe Morgan ranted during SNB last night for 20 minutes, they probably changed the indicator. Granted he is a professional, and so any mistake is going to be scrutinized and rightly so. However, I think we should give him a break as it could have happened to anyone. Not a free pass, though, he has made some boneheaded plays in his day.

28 year olds who have been in professional ball for several years aren't kids.
Good for you Yunel.

Now change your hair.

Count me as one who hopes Yunel never loses the frosted tips – not like the dude is a candidate for ever really looking normal anyway. Keep rakin’ my man

Bobby

Said that Yunel’s missing the sign wasn’t a big deal.

Also, this Love/Hate Yunel thing with other fans on this site (hate him when Braves are losing, love him when they are winning)…Y’all are acting like Yankees fans. The guy is a good player and cheap.

I agree. I like Yunel, and I like his intensity. What comes with that is that sometimes he’s going to have trouble controlling his temper and he might be overaggressive. But he’s got guts and he obviously loves the game. I would like to keep him around for a while. I hope he becomes as well-regarded as the other SS in the division.

My thoughts exactly

I mean, yeah, boneheaded plays this and that. The guy is one of the best SS’s in the game in his second year in the bigs after defecting from Cuba. The guy doesn’t speak great English and obviously there has been an adjustment. But you don’t become as good as Yunel is without a lot of fucking work, so you can criticize all you want, but some of the criticisms I have seen are pretty ridiculous.

Absolutely. The kid’s so good that the Braves felt comfortable trading Renteria, which led to the Braves getting Jurrjens. He’s going to screw up, because, let’s face it, he has a ten-cent head sometimes, but there’s no denying that when he’s on, he is one hell of a player.

And when Francoeur was "on," he was great too...

What’s your point?

Could not agree more

I find it funny how some continue with this “not in the boxscore screws ups”, but fact is he has been the Braves most consistent hitter the ENTIRE season.

I agree

I love Yunel and am getting really sick of all the fans on here bashing him for nonsense. He’s leading the team in RBIs, makes amazing defensive plays, and is very clutch. Yea maybe he missed the sign, but look at the pitch, it was waaaaaaay inside, probably would’ve missed it if he tried to swing at it. People will complain about his probably 6 or 7 mental lapses he’s had this year, but seriously, they need to stop complaining. He’s created far more runs than he’s broken.

You still don't leave the runner out to dry.
Who cares about what kind of hair he has.
yep.

I mean, he has a hat on all the time anyways. But I guess I’ve gotten used to the tips.

When I saw his pic on the front page, I thought he had been traded, and I almost had a heart attack.

But, coronary rhythm restored, GO YUNEL! Dudes been my favorite player the last two years. Love this kid!

Yeah!

And yeah! Him and Martini, who was NL player of the week a few weeks ago. And Infante.

Yunel Has sooooooo much Swagga.
Missed Sign...

I guess him not swinging at a pitch in on his wrists is what caused us to leave the bases loaded the inning before, and give up 3 runs in the top of the 9th. Yep – it was all Yunel’s fault.

If you had told me we’d win 3 out of 4, and only lose to Santana, I’d be pretty happy. Just like if we win 3 out of 4 against the Giants, and only lose to Lincecum. It happens.

I can't believe that some of you

actually believe that Yunel cost us the game on Sat.?!?! How bout the mini village that McLouth left on-base or Norton whiffing on two straight FB down the middle after having a 3-1 count with the bases loaded now that’s what cost us the game!

Norton is crap and should be demoted to the grounds crew. Hell he would probably miss the tarp. Nevermind

WHY

in the world, did we call him back up. WHo is that 55 year old 1st basemen that we kept around for so long? I would rather have him back?

Because we don't have the money to pay a guy to sit at home.

And Franco sucked more than Norton is by the time he hug ’em up.

I know its been said above me but,

Honestly can one of you guys that said yunels missed sign cost us that game explain that to me? What about our bullpen giving up all those runs and other players choking with the bases juiced? Yunels missed sign cost us a baserunner to second. big f’ing deal. He did not cost us the game and way too much is being made out of that incident, partly because joe morgan and the rest of the goons at espn aren’t intelligent enough to come up with original material to talk about.

Those are physical errors.

Ignoring a sign is a mental one. He’s too old at this point to be making mistakes like that.

The kid has

an undeniable talent on the baseball diamond. He just does not fit in. It is not his hair that should bother anyone, but the way he seems to rub teamates the wrong way.Reminds me a bit of how Clemente was first received in the clubhouse and the media,as well as fans. The language barrier seems to be a part, but I fear it is more than that. Booby Cox is old school about fundamentals, and Esco has his own flair, and is less concerned about those aspects of the game.Given his importance to the teams performance on the field,Bobby will try to fix it over the remainder of the season it appears. If he cant get some semblence of Booby Way to play the game, then maybe they make an attempt to move him in the off season. All that said, he is moving to star status pretty quickly.I hope we keep him for a long time.
