It was a glorious night at Turner Field. The Braves kicked off the evening by retiring Greg Maddux' number-31 jersey and honoring him on the field. Mad Dog ended his speech to the fans by saying, "let's go beat the Mets." The Braves heard him and complied by hitting well, pitching well, and fielding like gold glovers.
Starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens controlled the Mets all night, doing his best Greg Maddux impersonation and limiting the New York club to just 2 hits through 6 innings. Jurrjens also fielded his position quite well. The bullpen kicked in some good work as Boone Logan, Luis Valdez, and Kris Medlen kept the 2-hit shutout intact for Atlanta.
The Braves scored some runs for JJ, pummeling the Mets starting pitcher, Mike Pelfrey, for 9 runs over 4 innings. Brian McCann got the scoring started in the first with a rocket-shot double to right field. McCann came up a triple shy of the cycle after adding a two-run homerun in the third inning, one batter after Martin Prado went deep. The Braves chased Pelfrey in the fifth by stringing together 6 straight hits.
Both McCann and Yunel Escobar raised their average above .300, as each had a 3-hit night.
You know how often I talk about the Braves not hitting with runners in scoring position, well tonight they got the job done by going 8-for-13 as a team with runners in scoring position. Of course, it didn't hurt that they had 9 extra base hits. Let's keep beating the Mets. We're at .500, and there's no reason to look back now.

Facestealer - July 17, 2009
We were CELEBRATING in my house with this win.
Great night all the way around.
Maddux ceremony, .500 and 2 in a row against the Mets!
Only thing better would be tomorrow night making it 3 in a row!
NCChopper - July 17, 2009
This^
HEYJUDE - July 18, 2009
One of the best nights all season.
Ranks right up there with the 1-0 win over Halladay and the near no hitter, 5 run rally against the Cubs.
LETS GO BRAVES.
Scott Coleman - July 17, 2009
Even better
Florida tied the game in the 8th and now are batting, bottom 9, tied at 4.
Bronn - July 17, 2009
Woohoo!
Bonifacio singles. Man on first, no outs.
Bronn - July 17, 2009
And HanRam may as well have brought a cot with him to the plate, because he wasn’t seeing anything to pitch, there. 4 pitch walk, Runners on First and Second.
Bronn - July 17, 2009
Now a 2-0 count to Cantu
Chad Durbin is losing it.
Bronn - July 17, 2009
The giants are in extra innings too
Scott Coleman - July 17, 2009 via mobile
I would have voted “11,” if it was an option.
Go Braves! Go Marlins!
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 17, 2009
Wow. I checked the game in the 6th. At first glance, I thought we had scored one run with out any hits with 12 errors. Then I thought, how can the mets not have scored with us having 12 errors. Then i realized…the zero is going with the one to make ten. I was relieved… and very excited. Let’s go get Santana tomorrow!!!!! .500 BABY!!!!!!!
dlkinser86 - July 17, 2009

NCChopper - July 17, 2009
End of 9, now

It looks like the umpires want to go home.

Marlins are going to run out of pitchers, soon. Badenhop is their long relief man, I think. After him, they’ve got 2 guys left.

OK, Fish held them in the top of 11th – time to WIN this game.
NCChopper - July 17, 2009

Pirates just walked off against the giants!!!
Zeus12888 - July 17, 2009
Who got the hit?
Bronn - July 17, 2009
good deal. i hate the giants.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 17, 2009
Giants lost
Garrett Jones with a walkoff homer.
Bobby Cocks - July 17, 2009
Wow, seriously?
So you’re saying the Pirates score two runs in this game and win, and the two runs are both solo homers by the same guy?
That’s awesome.
Bronn - July 17, 2009
Yea, and he was just called up 2 weeks ago…counting those two, he’s already hit 7!
Zeus12888 - July 17, 2009
He’s on pace to be on the cover of a magazine or something.
Bronn - July 17, 2009
Can anyone be this good?
Zeus12888 - July 17, 2009
Hey look
He’s only 28 years old!
And apparently an original draft pick of the Braves.
Bronn - July 17, 2009
God, i dont care what people say during the draft...
we have the best damn scouting organization, period.
Zeus12888 - July 17, 2009
:(
esadb - July 18, 2009 via mobile
Haha, quote in the open thread over at Amazin Avenue:
Gage23 - July 17, 2009
you can do that...
and it still wouldve been the biggest blowout of the night…ouch
Zeus12888 - July 17, 2009
Zeus12888 - July 17, 2009
wow
i wonder how frenchy felt to be on the other side of this game and then go 0-4 and know thats exactly why your on the other side of this game.
-i think he should be on suicide watch
ca$hmere36 - July 17, 2009
yeaa...
see what we can do with no FYF?
Zeus12888 - July 17, 2009
I wonder if he cares… You would think if he did, he would work on his plate approach, he would try to get better, he would root for more than just Frenchy. But from his attitude, I’m wondering if he really cares.
Gage23 - July 17, 2009
Oh what a night!
Just got back to my hotel from the game. All in all, one of the best games I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The Maddox ceremony was fantastic, I had a great seat, the weather was beautiful, the fireworks afterward were very entertaining, and oh yeah, the Braves obliterated the Mets. Now I get to sleep in on the world’s most comfortable bed, eat lunch somewhere nice, go shopping at Ikea and H&M, catch tomorrow’s game somewhere with good food and big screens, pick up my son and daughter-in-law at the airport, and head back home.
Any suggestions on a good, (not too seedy) place to watch the game tomorrow?
sddbaker - July 18, 2009
Taco Mac
Locations in Decatur and on Lindbergh Dr. Both quality for game-watching.
Both are non-smoking, unfortunately for me, but good for family outings.
Audi - July 18, 2009
Taco Mac
On Peachtree and 8th is a good one too. Depends on where you’re staying, though. If you’re near Ikea and H&M, you could always stick around and go to the Fox Sports Grill also in Atlantic Station.
royhobbs - July 18, 2009
I went to that Fox Sports Grill once. Horrible experience. Went at lunch time with some co-workers and after we were seated, 20 minutes passed by and no one came by to offer drinks or take orders. I had to walk up to the front desk and request service.
Food sucked too.
But I guess if you just want to watch a game and not focus on actually being served, then yeah, it’s good for that.
Sparhawk - July 18, 2009
I agree, it’s not the best place in Atlanta to watch a game, but if she’s in Atlantic Station at the time, it’s pretty much the only place to go watch a game.
I really, really miss the Jocks & Jills on 10th/Peachtree, that was one of my most favorite places to watch sporting events away from home. Their Turner Field shuttle was one of the best things on the planet, too. Stupid repeated sexual harassment cases.
royhobbs - July 18, 2009
That place blows.
The last time I was there was for my friend’s birthday a few years ago. Someone’s food came about 30 minutes after everyone else’s. Waitress was nice about it and very apologetic. She got the manager of the place. That guy was a total dick. Didn’t apologize and was completely unsympathetic.
VictorW - July 18, 2009
I went in there...
got insulted by the hostess, looked around, and left. Some people treat you like the most pathetic loser in the world if you go by yourself to a restaurant. The place looked a little too stiff or something anyway. I actually ended up listening to most of the game on the radio while driving around some areas of Atlanta I have wanted to see but never been to. It was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.
sddbaker - July 20, 2009
Dantannas!
Cammando2317 - July 18, 2009
If you like your car getting booted, sure
royhobbs - July 18, 2009
Agreed.
Best game i’ve been to in a looooooooong time. Perfect night! i took some pictures, but we were in the upper deck, so somebody else probably has better ones.
10-4 - July 18, 2009
I was in the upper deck as well....
…but the front row, between home and third. Really a fantastic view of everything, including the dugout and my crush in the broadcast booth. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my son’s super-dooper-always-a-great-picture-even-from-the-upper-deck camera. Selfish kid took it with him to Puerto Rico!
I may try for the Taco Mac, but could just end up at the Fox Sports Grill. I’m sorely tempted to go to today’s game, because it’s just so beautiful, but don’t want to deal with the traffic.
Thanks!
sddbaker - July 18, 2009
Yeah, i may have been right behind you. 406, row 8
10-4 - July 19, 2009
I’ve been watching ESPN for close to two hours and I’ve seen the Cubs game 5 times. I haven’t seen the Braves game once.
Gage23 - July 18, 2009
Pay attention then.
I’ve seen it plenty.

Question
Did the people at home get to see the tribute video montage for Maddux?
royhobbs - July 18, 2009
I saw it. Was Glavine at the ceremony tonight?
jeg - July 18, 2009
Not on my PTV feed in NC.
I noticed in the commercial breaks (we don’t get the commercials here, just a shot of what’s on the field in between innings), people and players were talking about him on the scoreboard screen, but all I could see were chins and sound that was distorted.
NCChopper - July 18, 2009
We get the same thing, no commercials. And we dont have anything on PTV besides Braves games.
Gage23 - July 18, 2009
Same here.
NCChopper - July 18, 2009
Check the fanshots, I posted the video of the tribute, just have to wait past the first 17 seconds to get to it.
royhobbs - July 18, 2009
Although it might be a moot point, since you’ve posted it, but no. I got to watch the ceremony but not the video.
jug - July 18, 2009
Just watching the highlights on Sportscenter....
“Greg Maddux joins Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Dale Murphy, Phil Niekro, and Warren Spahn as the only members of the Braves Hall of Fame.”
They also said “former Phillie Wes Holmes”
10-4 - July 18, 2009
probably one of the best games ever
