Wow! Wow!
The Atlanta Braves have traded the once-Golden-Boy, Jeff Francoeur, to the division rival New York Mets for outfielder Ryan Church. I am beside myself. I mean, I knew the Braves would get rid of Francoeur somehow, but I didn't think they'd get rid of him to their biggest rival. The Mets must have indeed been the last resort for Frank Wren.
Church doesn't represent a real upgrade in the power department, though he certainly uses more of his ability than Francoeur does, but he is an equal defender and is better at getting on base. Here is a comparison of their stats for this year:
On first blush I like this trade. We get a better hitter, even if we did have to give up the once-face of the franchise (but that ship sailed a while ago). The risk here is that Francoeur figures something out and comes back to bite us time and again, but the odds of that happening are pretty slim if you've watched Francoeur over the last couple of years.
Good trade by Wren. While we would have saved about half a million in the deal, apparently the Braves also had to send the Mets cash to cover the differences in salaries. Wow! Jeff Francoeur is so bad, that we had to pay someone to take him. Still, good trade by Wren.
Looking at the split-stats for Church this year at the Mets new ballpark, which is playing like a pitchers park, he does a whole lot better away from there. His home slash splits are .216/.297/.278, while his road splits are .326/.359/.444, with 13 of his 16 doubles coming on the road. That makes this deal look even better. We could be getting a hitter who is just itching to get out of Citi Field.

Cash also going to the Mets
so we don’t end up paying any less. The thing that a lot of fans are ignoring though, is that Church has been fine away from Citi field with a .326/.359/.444 line and it’s been that cavernous home park that has killed him. If we get this production from him for the rest of the year then this is a great trade.
was385 - July 10, 2009
Bye fyf:( I hope he tanks with the muts and he finds a AL team and becomes the player we always wanted him to be
Buttafuco13 - July 10, 2009
If he tanks...
Will he even get another shot?
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
I hope you suck in NY bye, Its fine if you do well with an AL team
Heyward is the next crime dog - July 10, 2009
I think this proves that Frank Wren is committed to trying to win the division. While this may not be a blockbuster trade, this and the McLouth trade are good steps towards addressing our weaknesses to make a run for October. Is Church going to win the World Series for us? No, but he he’s an upgrade and I think the trade indicates that we’re going to be aggressive instead of rolling over at 5 GB days before the All-Star break.
jug - July 10, 2009
Mwahahaha!
Enjoy New York Frenchy, they’re going to love watching you suck terribly.
Perrinbar - July 10, 2009
Put Frenchy on suicide watch
Mets fans are going to be way more brutal to him, if you think his psyche was weak here, just wait
Cracker! - July 10, 2009
He's going to complain
about not seeing any pitches to hit while batting ahead of Cora and Santos.
Bronn - July 10, 2009
Frank Wren.
Seriously, anyone that thinks that Wren is a bad GM for whatever reason is starting to run out of reasons to do so…
ejruiz - July 10, 2009
FIRE WREN!
justincredubil02 - July 10, 2009
I like the constant activity
He’s not content to sit on his hands. Loved the McLouth deal and this deal. He didn’t buckle for Peavy, that non-deal showed more about Wren then anything else.

Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2009
Wow, I almost shit my pants when I read the headline. lol. Upgrade indeed. Now we only have KJ to rip on now.
mad_dog_maddux - July 10, 2009
Good Trade
Now who is Ryan Church?
Bronn - July 10, 2009
He's a league average or better RF...
IE lightyears ahead of what Frenchy has given us on a regular basis lately.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
I PRAYED AND WE GOT CHURCH
Cracker! - July 10, 2009
While certainly trending down, Church’s ISO this has been very adversely affected by Citi Field. I mean, look what it has done to David Wright! He’ll most certainly pick it up at Turner Field and be at least better than a .700 OPS guy, and hopefully above the .785 mark he posted in ’08.
soup du jour - July 10, 2009
that
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2009
While he’s only got 1 HR away from Citi Field, his away splits are .326/.359/.444. That’s an .800 OPS! From a right fielder!? How is that possible?
Maybe we can expect that from him.
Bronn - July 10, 2009
so long, FYF hello success
cirela20 - July 10, 2009
Nice Trade
I like this trade… he can deliver with runners on scoring position instead of batting double plays… good move by frank, now we need to get a power bat and we are going to be in the race in october
JoeyBraves - July 10, 2009
Fixed.
justincredubil02 - July 10, 2009
Who would've thought 2 years ago we would trade Frenchy for Ryan Church?
Back in ’05 and ’06, nothing short of Albert Pujols or Johan Santana would be acceptable.
Funny how things change.
Thanks for the occasional cheer Frenchy. You won our hearts over as a wide-eyed 22 year old rookie…and then you proceded to crush our hopes and dreams of you in RF the next 10 years.
Good Luck in NY.
And if you hit a HR against us, you better be ready for the beer about to be thrown on you.
Scott Coleman - July 10, 2009
Highway Robbery!
Way to go, Wren!
WeNeedDavidJustice - July 10, 2009
How bad is a guy when your biggest upside is that you don’t get hurt a lot.
Quotes and moves like this make me VERY happy Omar Minaya works for the Mets.
Cracker! - July 10, 2009
And most of them are in the major leagues!!!
VivaLosBravos - July 11, 2009
Well, doesn't get hurt...
Or plays through the pain. It’s one thing not to get hurt and play 140 games a year. But for Frenchy (or any player) to tell the manager he’s ready to play every single day for multiple years, that’s a quality worth lauding. They got a little impatient with Church’s injuries (which really started with Yunel’s knee to the head.)
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
wow, just wow.
can someone explain to me why the mets would do this?
Slee - July 10, 2009
no, just be happy about it.
Sparhawk - July 11, 2009
Upside and a dislike of Church by Manuel.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
My Mets friend just texted me to say...
“Francour for Church. I think I am going to be sick.”
taney71 - July 10, 2009
wait church is a lefty?
Slee - July 10, 2009
Who cares? French is G.O.N.E!
scstrato - July 10, 2009
with him platooning with Diaz, that won’t be much of a problem.
Darin H - July 10, 2009
I'd be surprised if all he did was platoon.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
Ryan Church, I love you if all you do is the following:
1) Recognizing which one is the pitcher and which one is the catcher.
2) Don’t attempt to bat lefty out of the right handed batter’s box.
3) Don’t crap in the infield dirt during innings (between is probably okay).
4) Show up most days with a glove.
5) Don’t punch Chipper in the groin 50% of the time.
Bronn - July 10, 2009

Frenchy interview on Braves live
Gage23 - July 10, 2009
Gotta tip my hat to him, he was very gracious to the Braves and the opportunity they gave him.
NCChopper - July 10, 2009
Wish him all the best. I was always hoping he would turn it around this year.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2009
Wanted to add
I would have preferred he turn it around big time and be the player we kept hearing he could be.
I just hoping now as a Met he doesn’t become a Brave killer when we face him like some others have.
NCChopper - July 10, 2009
It was nice that he got the opportunity to live his dream of playing for his hometown team, but I’ve long since abandoned hope that he’s going to become a major league level hitter.
Bronn - July 10, 2009
Frenchy always wanted to play football. I think he saw baseball as being “easier” and “less tackles,” in his mind. Hopefully he can man up.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2009
When the Mets release him at the end of the year and he's jobless
Maybe he can finally take Clemson up on that deal.
Cracker! - July 10, 2009
well as much as i have bagged on him the past couple of years, i was always rooting for him and it will be weird to see him in a mets uni
Slee - July 10, 2009
Joe said he (Church) can play any position in the outfield…my brain is thinking Diaz in Right and Church maybe in Left?
Hey, a girl can dream.
NCChopper - July 10, 2009

NCChopper - July 10, 2009

He’s actually a better defensive CF than McLouth is.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
This sucks
You guys are sorry! Francoeur was an Atlanta Brave! He is only 25yrs old…plenty of time to improve. He did good once he could do it again. I hope he tears it up in NY.
For who? Ryan Church…this guy has not even played a full season and he is like 31yrs old…..!!! Forget this guy!
Also what am I supposed to do with my Francoeur shirt?

Matt_Grbac - July 10, 2009
Javy at an in-store promo last fall…

He was so sweet; thoroughly interested in what each person said and brought to get autographed…willingly posed for pics, and seemed genuinely surprised so many people came to see him.
Lizziebeth - July 10, 2009
I can remember really liking Javy when I was 8 or 9 years old. I liked watching him play. I also had a poster of Greg Maddux on my wall when I was in 3rd grade. I was uber pissed when I somehow lost that poster.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2009

The only thing that sucked about this is he was traded within our division…an Atlanta Braves NO NO….but Moving FYF for anything more that a couple of lower A prospects was going to be a tall order. I am still not a FWF (fan)…because of his inability to land big fish but from my armchair in the sand but this one made me stand motionless and slam the fecies gate shut to prevent excrement as the words that “Slee” and a few others has said surged from my vocal chords….WOW (repeat after pause) WOW!
bravestatoo - July 11, 2009
He's already HAD plenty of time to improve.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
Bottom line: the Atlanta Braves HAD to move Frenchy to compete this year. Again, wish him the best, but it wasn’t working. I was cheering for him last night with those hits, but that’s baseball.

Matt_Grbac - July 10, 2009
First three were hard for me. Especially that first name on the list.
But that last one you listed doesn’t bother me at all.
Bronn - July 10, 2009
Think of it this way: At least he’s still playing baseball.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2009
True...but can we....or those that actually still like Frenchy....root for him in a Mets uni?
Matt_Grbac - July 10, 2009
Sure, but he will still swing at the first pitch, regardless of where it is, he will still swing at a breaking ball outside the zone, and he will still not hit homeruns, no matter how hard we cheer for him.
justincredubil02 - July 10, 2009
lol, I was one of the lone peeps standing up for Frenchy around here, dude. I feel ya. But for the most part (sans the throwing arm)………he was poison at the plate the last COUPLE of years.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 10, 2009
Haha...
So his throwing arm some times helped at the plate? :P
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
blame smoltz for leaving, and glavine for going after the money a few years ago.
I miss Andruw, but that was definitely the right move to make.
And I never fell in love with Frenchy. I used to like him, but when he turned into super-bitch, I lost all feeling for him. I wish him the best and all, but I think he is done as a Major League player.
justincredubil02 - July 10, 2009
done! really
Come on dude…he can turn it around. He is still younger. He hasnt even hit his prime.
Matt_Grbac - July 10, 2009
He has not improved in one single area since his rookie season. His fielding has gotten worse, his average has fallen, his OBP is the worst in the majors for starting position players, his power is all but gone, and his Ks aren’t getting better.
Frenchy is going to be one of those flashes in the pan that we will one day look back on and wonder what could have been.
justincredubil02 - July 10, 2009
I said all that to say that I think his peak was his first year.

Darin H - July 10, 2009
And seriously
Why would you need a smoke screen to bring up Heyward anyway? It’s not like they weren’t allowed to just call him up to the team anytime they wanted. Just call him up, tell him he’s playing right field and batting 6th/7th, and be done with it.

I don't like the trade
I really didn’t like this trade. Frenchy is he bad, yes. I think he can be fixed, and I thought A. Jones could be also. I would have rather seen him sent down and let him work it out down there. Yes he may only turn out to a 15-20 HR guy with around a 700 to 750 OPS but that is aceptable. Frenchy is an athlete and I really think people need to think this through and not just be happy he is gone. I have liked the moves Wren has made so far, but not too big on this move. Yes he may have just need a change. I think Wren talked to scouts and they thought that Jeff could not be fixed, they are the pros not me. I think the trade will end out alright, I hope church doesn’t not have any problems with his previous concussion.
atlbravesfn12 - July 10, 2009
How is a 700 to 750 OPS acceptable for a power corner position? Not to mention that Franceour had become a whiny bitch about things.
dlkinser86 - July 10, 2009
church
Over 750 is and 15-20 HR is. Church is just a little over 700. I will miss his nice arm in right, I have no idea about Church’s does anyone know?
atlbravesfn12 - July 10, 2009
supposed to be very good
if not as good as FYF’s pretty dang close.
i am confused…do you like the move or not? lol…you kinda said both. I think you may have talked yourself into liking the move throughout your post.
justincredubil02 - July 10, 2009
Haha I know i was a little off with the OPS, but 750-800 is nice. I like the amount of doubles Church has, but not the amount of HRs. I hope his arm is good, and i wish he was a righty hitting. I don’t really like the move, but I can live with it. I just would hate to see Frenchy trn it around. It would be awful that the bravse have had Mark Derosa, Jason Marquis, A. Jones, Davies, Frenchy. It doesn;t look good for the braves and it just may be time for a new hitting coach.
atlbravesfn12 - July 10, 2009
just look at his slash stats…he is hitting for a better average, with a better OBP, better OPS and better SLG than Frenchy.
Remember, he is playing in Citi Field where not many HRs go out.
justincredubil02 - July 10, 2009
Yeah true about Citi Field
I just hope Frenchy is released/ non-tenured after this year and the Braves can pick him up with a a minor league deal. Then have him work in minors with a hitting coach. I am unsure if we have any great minor league hitting coaches, but I am sure they can work with Frency. What a story this would be, even though it is not likely. I just hope Church can do the job.
atlbravesfn12 - July 10, 2009
No. A thousand times no. We don’t need him taking up space on a roster. Your 1984 Old Cutlass blows it’s motor and you sell it to Cash for Clunkers. You don’t go to the junkyard and try to get the car back for $500. It’s a POS and you got rid of it and got a good deal. Goodbye Jeff. Don’t come back.
BullManUGA - July 11, 2009
Said thing is, I have a Cutlass =(
Gage23 - July 11, 2009
What's your point?
DeRosa’s never been able to hold down an everyday job, Marquis has had just a handful of above-average seasons, Jones still sucks, Davies was mediocre last year and has been just bad this year.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
UZR actually says Church is the better fielder.
And he can play an above-average CF to boot. I certainly think he’s a better option there if McLouth is hurt or taking a day.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009

taney71 - July 10, 2009
Who was it that made the Failcoeur T-Shirt?
Get working on a Met’s themed one, you can make some serious coin by the end of august.
Lennox - July 10, 2009
Even if French gets it together and bites us
I won’t mind, because whatever he finds in New York he was never going to find it in Atlanta.
SunDolphin - July 10, 2009
I agree. If he does somehow turn it around up there, it wouldn’t matter, because it wouldn’t have happened here, not with TP, not with the pressure. If he turns it around, it’s because "change of “scenery,” or whatever. It’s not because we didn’t give him a chance. We gave him more chances than he deserved, frankly.
Gage23 - July 10, 2009
He's worked with plenty more coaches than Pendleton.
They’ve all failed.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
I LOVE this trade
First off I have had an odd liking of Church when he was a Nat and a Met. Its irrational but anyways.
So this year he has a .280/.332/.375.707 line and as gondeee has said that itself is much better than Frenchy.
But his numbers look much much better when you platoon him with Diaz/Infante and take him away from Citi:
Away .326/.359/.444/.804
vsRHP .310/.360/.424/.784
Who would have thought we could trade Frenchy STRAGHT UP for a hitter who should hit over .300 with ~800OPS in the role we will ask for him, with good defense, and doesn’t add salary? Wren is a freaking genius.
bbxxj - July 10, 2009
Not irrational. He’s been a pretty good hitter ever since he was an EXPO, and when he’s completely healthy, he’s been nearly awesome. He was the Mets’ best hitter last year for two months, before Yunel ninja-kicked him in the head. Just check his 2008 Pre-and-Post-All Star splits. He OPSed .882 before the All Star break.
In 2008, aside from a flukey season from Dmitri Young, he was the best hitter for the Nationals, as well. Zimmerman had a bit of a down year, and they didn’t really have anything else, but still. He’s a good hitter, and a good defensive player, and the only preventing him for being better known is a lack of pure power and some tough luck injuries.

The best part of this deal is that we dont have to watch the FYF spotlight in rain delays anymore
Heyward is the next crime dog - July 10, 2009
+100
TennKen - July 11, 2009
Please...
I bet they’ll find a way to torture us with it anyway.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
Guys, check out the links posted on Amazin' Avenue's blog
They are all pretty much equally awesome.
My favorite was this gem from Baseball Think Factory.
Bronn - July 10, 2009
That article was the funniest thing I’ve read all week. Possibly, almost as funny, was the next article down the list with the headline, “Royals – acquired nothing.”
FineHamAbounds - July 11, 2009
This is so true
for my 5th birthday, my brother (who was 10 years older than me) got me a whole box of Hoops basketball cards. Inside the box, I pulled a Michael Jordan UNC card. At the time, Scottie Pippen was my favorite player (for some unknown 5-year-old-child reason) and my brother immediately traded me a normal, every day, run of the mill Scottie Pippen card for that MJ one…I have held him in disdain ever since!
LOL
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2009
Follow up story
It must run in the family though, because several years later, I traded away my household chore of doing the dishes every other week (my younger brother and I switched off) to my younger brother. In return I gave him $25.
Yes, I paid him $25 to do the dishes for a whole year. The best part of this is that he thought it was a good deal, and made the same deal the next year for a slight increase to $50!
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2009
hahahahaha
Heyward is the next crime dog - July 11, 2009
Holy Shit
This trade just surprised the hell out of me. I mean, I assume that Frenchy won’t figure it out (he had better not become a good hitter all of a sudden), but to the METS?! Holy Shit!
Andy Braves Fan - July 10, 2009
Wow
I knew this was coming, and I even hoped for it, with a sort of clinical detachment. But seeing it happen is another thing.
I am torn. From a baseball perspective, this is an awesome move. There is about a 97% chance we fleeced the Mets on this one. But that being said, I am going to miss Frenchy’s wild-pitch striking out first pitch swinging double A demoting .650 OPS’ing ass.
Expect a full length fan post from me (and likely others) in the near future on this, but Frenchy was the future face of this franchise for several years, and it wasn’t until this year that I finally gave up that dream. And lets face it: Frenchy sucks at baseball, but hes a good dude. Every game I’ve been too he has been cool with the fans, always smiling, even when he is sucking.
And we can’t even wish him well, because he is a met. I am deeply conflicted.
Sid Bream's Moustache - July 11, 2009
Hey guys what's going on in here
royhobbs - July 11, 2009
is that a frenchy quote?
NYSaint - July 11, 2009
unfortuneately, yes it is.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2009
But it's not so unfortunate for US anymore!
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
Good luck with that, New York
bigjoe - July 11, 2009
Can't say I dislike this one.
I feel kinda bad for Frenchy, though. I mean, he had to know it was coming, but to a division rival where he’ll see us several times a year? I’m sure he was hoping he’d end up in Seattle or something.
But I’ll take present-day Ryan Church over present-day Frenchy. The only thing about Frenchy I’ll really miss is the arm, so long as it’s not attached to a bat.
FineHamAbounds - July 11, 2009
Yeah, he'll probably hate coming back to Atlanta to play against us.
But I think Church’s arm might just be a better replacement than you think.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
i know this is really off topic but....
does anyone think than wren got church for more trading possibilites. obvi nym was last option for FYF. do you think were done with trades… everyone wants another power bat. i like church. hell of a player from what ive seen. but i alsoooooo have a tempting feeling that frank and bobby are getting tired of yunies days off. maybe church and yunie for a decent defensive shortstop and a hugeeeeeee power rf at bat. not much time to make another move. but i woudlnt put anything past frank after todays trade lol sneaky bastard
+10 million on getting rid of fyf
BOBBYCOX - July 11, 2009
Frank is The Mayon
I’ll be interested to see what happens. With Kelly Johnson on the mend, and Omar Infante due back after the break, we are going to already have some power back. Frank has won me over, though. Whatever he decides to do, it will be in the Braves’ best interests.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 11, 2009
it sucks that it had to come to this
it is a good move to make, but still just upsetting that it had to happen.
nuftjedi - July 11, 2009
What a day.
FINALLY rid of Francine and a nice win in Colorado.
Lets get the next 2 and finish the first half at .500.
Scott Coleman - July 11, 2009
Been reading
The posts over at AA…God bless Frenchy. They hate him already. Seriously, it’s gonna be like being thrown to the lions.
Glad we are rid of him and I LOVE the trade but I feel sorry for anybody who is going to have to go through what he’s facing.
WienerDog - July 11, 2009
I’ll admit to kinda feeling the same way. I don’t hate on Frenchy….he drove me nuts at the plate but there was never any serious hatred for the guy.
I’m afraid he may have a huge awakening in NY and the kind of fans he’ll encounter with the Mets if he doesn’t produce and quick. Failcouer T-Shirts will be tame in comparison.
NCChopper - July 11, 2009
Cash
So am I the only that thinks we need to get a collection fund together to send to the Braves to show our appreciation and attempt to provide the difference in money. I mean FRENCHY is GONE and we actually got more for him than we had to give up to get KBurg back in the day. Impressive
TMAC85 - July 11, 2009
Frank Wren must work with hypnosis (if anyone has seen Curse of the Jade Scorpion, lol)
But hey, thanks to ESPN, Frenchy is going to be featured in at least one nationally televised game a week now……..eep.
RIP Frenchy
Chief Noc-A-Homa - July 11, 2009
Who?
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
Can Frenchy hit Lowe?
(From Braves site) TIDBITS:
So Frenchy’s debut in a Mets uniform in Turner Field will be against Lowe.
Predictions?
NCChopper - July 11, 2009
breaking balls away
and he goes 0-3 with a walk (yes, i said it) and 2 Ks.
justincredubil02 - July 11, 2009
That's great and all
But more importantly, what number is Francoeur going to wear for New York?
royhobbs - July 11, 2009
I think I read 12?
bigjoe - July 11, 2009
Correct.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
Zero risk
Not only is this a great trade but I disagree with anyone who thinks there is any risk at all associated with it. There is zero risk to the Braves here. Even if he miraculously becomes a useful player, he would have never done that with Atlanta and anyone who says otherwise hasn’t been watching him over the past couple of seasons. It’s an immediate addition by subtraction and is also another addition by subtraction to the Mets as well.
ajones2522 - July 11, 2009
Absolutely.
If it only takes the option away from Bobby of running him out there 5-6 nights a week, that’s a net positive.
MichaelProcton - July 11, 2009
had to make it 200 comments. liiiiiiiittle bit ocd.
Go Church!!
