2009 First-Year Player Draft Open Thread

The Braves did pretty good with four of the first 100 draft picks last year, but this year while the quantity won't be there, the quality should be. The Braves have the #7 pick in the draft's first round, then don't pick again until the third round and pick number #87 overall. Then that will be it for the day.

The odds makers have us selecting either UNC RHP Alex White or Vandy LHP Mike Minor, of course we should never underestimate the love Braves Scouting Director Roy Clark has for high school pitchers. The odds are that the real apple of our eye, Georgia high school pitcher Zach Wheeler, will not be available by the time we pick.

Clark doesn't want to tip Braves' hand:  Mark Bowman tries to infer what the Braves are going to do by reading the body language of Roy Clark.

Braves look to make most of early draft pick:  Carroll Rogers hears the same thing Bowman does and gives us a similar but less inferred take on what the team might do today.

Could Minor be a lock:  Baseball America's Jim Callis says he has the top-8 picks locked down, with the Braves taking Matt Minor.

[UPDATE: 6:40pm]

The Braves officially select Mike Minor with their first pick.

Mayo is sticking with Minor for us.

http://twitter.com/JonathanMayoB3

Wow Matzek is falling quickly on his list.

Why wouldn’t we take Matzek if he is still available

I'm sour on Minor

I don’t get why he’s so high, he just doesn’t seem like top of the first round talent.

He’s safe and he’ll sign for slot. Everyone I’ve read says Minor is the most likely pitcher to win 100 games in this draft. Even if he’s a 2 WAR pitcher for six years, he’s a safe bet. The Braves can take him and have a fairly good chance of having a #3/4 starter from 2011-2016 and won’t have to worry about negotiations taking all summer. They can get him in at Rome or Myrtle Beach, give him some innings, and look forward to him being at Mississippi next year. I’m strongly opposed to the move, but…

That’s a great way to think. A lot of times the flashy players don’t pan out.

Well yeah, but we have five Mike Minors in A-ball right now. One will pan out from that group. There’s just so much more we could do with the pick.

I agree

I’m not happy if we draft Minor. I’m willing to take a chance that our pick will be a complete flop. With a pick this high I dont want someone that is a middle of rotation at best, most likely a back-end guy. Why not take a chance with a top 10 talent.

After rereading reports on Minor

Im not sure i would take him. Alex White or Matzek would probably be better.

I agree. I trust the scouting department though and think they will make the right pick

Matsek = The best

Matt Purke

I like him a lot.

He wants a lot of money.

He won’t take anywhere near slot money

Seriously, whats with this stupid package showing former picks? A good 70% (guesstimate) of baseball players were drafted. Come on now.

Amen

And they were showing all the first rounders. I would have rather seen the people who got picked in the 26th and 44th rounds

Piazza was the first guy they showed. Haha

haha I must have fallen asleep for that. facepalm

Minor for Team USA

Saw Minor pitch here in The Netherlands last year for Team USA. He was named best pitcher of the tournament (beating Strassburg, who was on the same team)..

Damn, where's Aaron Crow on Callis' list?

Him and Law both have him out. Signability.

How much is he gonna cost?

He wanted I think 4.5 last year, so probably something in that general vicinity…I’d stay away, you don’t want him to pull a Matt Harrington

How long is each team given for the draft? For each pick, I mean

15 minutes

No way. This is only scheduled for 2 and a half hours.

Dang

So we won’t be picking till like… 7 30?

It's 4 minutes each
When the hell do the picks start?

This thing is boring.

Some minor notes…

Strasberg seems a lock at 1, Ackley at 2. Sanchez is going 4th to Pittsburgh, they’ve already reached a deal. Baltimore is taking either Wheeler or Hobgood.

I’m hearing that Baltimore is leaning towards Hobgood, so it’s all on the Orioles.

Err...

I mean giants

Law said earlier he’s feeling Wheeler-Matzek/Crow-White at 5-6-7.

Uncle Bud at the podium. Here we go

4 minutes per pick. THANK GOD

 Wheeler/Matsek

I swear to god, I will fall of my chair laughing if I don’t hear “Stephen Strasberg” in 3:17

Sea would shit if the Nats pass on SS

BEN MCDONALD IN THE HOUSE!??!

I know right?!?!

WHos the Bravos rep? I forget, bubt it was posted here…

I completely forget…I read it also

pick trout if he’s there…i see this kid in the neighborhood….he’s the real deal….(i have no idea what i’m talking about when judging prospects)

once he was intentionally walked twice in a game with the bases loaded….i’m rooting for the local guy

It take “a couple hundred years” for a pitcher to learn

What

nevermind

Hey Harold Reynolds, you know whats a risk?

Taking a slap hitting middle infielder second overall

First overall? Darryl Strawberry. Good work, Seattle

Strasburg goes first. Big shock. The delayed applause slayed me

Is that Jay Buhner?

Was it a bald guy with a vicious goatee? If so, yes

There goes Ackley

whats the situation right now?

who is up with what pick? Who of “our guys” are left?

Strasburg, Ackley. No change to how things were at 6pm.

Tate next?

Tate here i’m guessing

Apparently

the Braves no longer like Matzek.

What?

Why do you say that?

Has to be because of signability. These teams are fucking CHEAP

It’s ridiculous.

Is every team going to take the full four minutes to pick?!?!?

probably the teams don't, but mlb network wants them to

They’d actually do well to expand the time for each pick to let the talking heads talk about each pick more. 1 minute discussing the first up in the air pick?

Pads take Donovan Tate

YES, Padres take Tate

There goes Tate

So, Sanchez, Hobgood, Wheeler…and hopefully not Minor.

For the love of god

Alex white please

I won’t criticize anything the Front Office does for a month if they pick one of Purke, Matzek, and Green and pay for them.

Yeah, I really like Green and Matzek.

I like what I have learned about Green today

He seems to have tons of upside.

Purke is tooo skinny. If they pass on an avail. Matsek I’d be pissssed. We have extra cash because we have no 2nd. We’d def. regret it down the line.

4th and 5th are supposed to be Sanchez then Hobgood

Miguel Sano

Are we in the running for him on July 2?

Why are they talking about the Pirates? They’re taking Sanchez. This coverage is stupid.

PIT takes Sanchez.

J. Mayo is on a roll.

JORGE?!?!? LOL

I almost shit my pants when I heard Jorge.

Can’t blame bud, Tony and Jorge are almost the same word.

Let’s pray SF takes Matzek over Wheeler. We’d draft Wheeler

Jason Churchill on Tate…

It’s not Matt Bush, but it’s certainly not the best player available. The Padres are just bad at this.

But they’re boring, they have to get ATHLETIC!

I don’t particularly agree. Tate has monster potential and if there’s one thing the Padres need, it’s high ceilinged position players. Kudos to the Padres for taking the risk; certainly better than spending comparable amounts on a HS pitcher or taking an inferior talent.

Yeah, I cut off the back end of the quote talking about his potential

Lets not draft wheeler.

what is the down-side to Wheeler?

HIS MYSPACE IS OFFENSIVE

He’s a high school pitcher.

18. yr. old. guy. lol

which is what we seem to always draft

Every high school boy in Georgia!

Wheeler is safe pick. He’ll sign and he’s around the same talent level as Matzek or Purke, though below. Less risk and risk exclusively in a baseball sense rather than signability.

Both of those reasons.

Mainly the second one.

Theres Hobgood…come on Giants…no Wheeler…

They should take Matzek

He’s a local guy for them. Leave Wheeler to us.

BAL takes Hobgood

Shoot. I would’ve liked Hobgood if he had fallen to us. I would’ve loved to see Wheeler-Matzek from 5-6.

Woot We better take Matzek if Wheeler goes.

Matzek / Wheeler available

interesting to see which one we get, if either

FW don’t be cheap, we don’t have to pay for a 2nd

I’ll never agree with overdrafting and saving money. That’s all I have. Alvarez wasn’t the second-best player last year, Sanchez may not be the 24th best this year, and goes No. 4. Ok.

I’m so anxious.

This broadcast (on MLB network) is lame

You think they could learn from watching the NFL draft and have something more interesting b/t picks

Selig is putting me to sleep

he sounds like an old person telling a story.

I hate the stupid same line

With the Xth selection in the 2009 “first-year player” draft, the X team selects Y player.

Mix it up Bud!

So can anyone explain why we don’t just draft the best guy available with our pick, and if it’s a “signability” thing, we don’t just take the #7 pick for next year…?

wouldn't it be the #8 pick next year?

Either way, the point still stands.

Time value of having a prospect in your system and developing him.

Is it really worth it to just make a major reach with the Minor kid over another year of delaying the time getting a prospect in your system…? It isn’t like we’re hurting for low-level pitching talent right now.

Agreed

You don’t get this kind of pick every year—unless your team sucks. The braves have to take advantage of this opportunity.

That’s a call for someone else. I’d be hesitant to punt a pick unless the disparity in talent available is large. That’s not the case for next year from what I’ve read (tons of college pitching).

SF takes...

Wheeler! Hell the fuck yeah
We are up!
Prays for White

I just don't get why you're so excited about him...

Wheeler to Frisco. Dammit.

MAT-ZEK MAT-ZEK MAT-ZEK

Get your rusty nail ready...

C’mon Franky, go with Matzek

Matzekkkkkkkkkkk

Wheeler looks horrified

Haha

really?

I don’t think he smiled once.

i’m sick of that word already

2.5 min to go

damn they got wheeler that kills me

on my feed

SF still has 46 seconds left…

watch us draft Frenchy again.

Thats Tate, he’s already off the board. Thank god

$20 says it is White or Minor. Puke

Jim callis has been exactly right so far
that means mike minor… hopefully not

Most people had the first 6 the same

VROOM VROOM PARTY STARTER…GO BRAVES

I’ll probably stop watching after this. Draft shows are f*cking boring.

Cmon, Roy

Just draft a high schooler already.

mlb.com has it for free live

here we go fellas

Apparently, the Braves need pitching.

Facepalm

ATL takes Minor

The Braves need more pitching?

Braves need hitting.

Minor. FUck. I do not approve

Welcome aboard Mike Minor

Minor…
What’s with the applause… was that mocking applause?

dammit…I wanted a position player here…namely, Green.

Cincinnata reds?

yeah, he’s pretty bad

Mike Minor was 38th on keith Law’s top 100

Just fucking shoot me

God effing damnit

College player

interesting — hope he’s Joey Devine-ish

He’s a starter

i was referring more to the

college-player almost ready to dominate aspect of Devine when he was drafted

Alright, we can slot him right into the rotation!

Wait.

not atlanta joey devinish…

When he’s on, he’s a No. 4 starter in the majors who could play up to a No. 3 because he has command and control

hahahahahahaha FAIL

Wren’d again.

Matzek>>Minor. I hate signability

need more drinkability.

signability is horrible. They need to establish a base salary for draft picks.

Positives:
He should get here quick and be solid for awhile.
He’ll sign quick.

Negatives:
He could be Jeremy Sowers

Negatives:
He could be Jeremy Sowers

Puke

Because if there’s one thing we need quick, it’s another starting pitcher.

Cowardly pick

Hope it doesn’t blow up in their/our faces.

=[

Well I’m out.

ditto.

what a let down.

LOL

Look at the Wheeler interview right now… the kid sooo doesnt want to be a giant.

hahaha amen.
“I know that Giants have a history, of, uh, being good?”

I think he’s just not smart.

WHAT A SHITTY PICK. FUCK YOU BRAVES GO TO HELL

Relax

Hanson was a sign and follow and Medlen was a 10+ rounder…

You “whoa is me” guys are funny.

Weren’t you threatening to kill people during the open thread last night?

crappy pick… sigh…

its "woe is me dude"

Three signability picks in the first seven. Ridiculous.

economy is down!

depressing day…

God damnit. I can’t believe we wasted our first top ten pick in years on talent that could be had at the bottom of the first round in ANY draft. If we choose Matzek and he doesn’t sign we have next years #8! Fuck. Signability.

That’s actually the point I was trying to make above. I feel like having next year’s #8 wouldn’t be the end of the world.

So apparently drafting this Minor character is a fail.

Well, balls.

Not exactly. He’s first round talent…just not top 10.

Sounds like Matzek is screwing himself

with his $$$ demands

He’ll get something close to it. Lots of teams left who will pay him $5 million (IMO). Detroit next probably.

or not

maybe these teams know more than the talking heads in this chat room…

Tomato, Tomato

87) Jacob Stewart, OF, Colorado HS

With no second round pick, making a big splash in the third round with Stewart is intriguing. It will cost a lot of money to get Stewart to pass up Stanford, but perhaps not having a second round pick would free up the cash. If they could actually sign Stewart, this is a good draft.

John Sickels thoughts

The signability thing isn’t surprising at all, though… the Braves are probably hurting for cash.

They have a top 10 payroll and are currently 25th in attendance (going on %).

That is a joke.

Yeah, the Braves are strapped for cash, but that’s the kind of thinking that gets you in trouble…shorting the draft money because you don’t want a prospect that’ll cost 5million vs. 2.5 million is going to cost you in the long run. The one thing that bothers me more than most is that this guy isn’t the best player available. He CLEARLY isn’t. When you start going away from that you’re going to find yourself in the Astros position.

I completely agree. The draft is the wrong area to be cutting corners… in any sport, really.

Maybe he won’t sign =]

Minor? If the Braves offer slot, he’ll take it, no doubt. He’s not sniffing #7 next year with Ranaudo, Blair, Harvey, Pomeranz, etc. there. I mean, we might try to go under slot, but I can’t see that.

does selig have a speech probelm? is it documented?

Interesting pick on Turner. He was the original “Porcello-like contract” guy and they ended up with him in the end. Matzek could easily fall another ten picks.

Pitchers like Minor can be successful in a rotation that includes a couple of hard throwers; they’d offer a much different look. That isn’t to suggest that Glavine wouldn’t have won 305 games without John Smoltz or Pedro Martinez. Rather, Glavine’s success goes to show that pitchers with supposed “fringy” stuff can make it in the majors. If Minor has a hero, it should be Glavine.

I don’t think anyone doubts Minor will be a major league starter; in fact, all the analysts I’ve seen have said he’s the safest thing in the draft. It’s just that comparable talents will be selected around pick 30. Hell, Mike Leake would’ve signed for slot and he’s a better prospect.

Another signability pick, this one at least has a reason behind it.

Bud Selig is the most boring human on the planet

The guy can not talk

Keith Law: Roy Clark is tied up in a closet in Atlanta’s offices.

Jason Churchill: Roy, don’t worry buddy. I’ll be in Hotlanta in September to break you out! Not a surprise, but a few weeks ago, I would have bet the farm against a pick like this.

Keith Law: A low-upside polished college lefty with the seventh pick. I’m a sucker for upside, and they passed on probably a dozen guys I’d like better who bring that upside to the table.

I mentioned this over on BH just now…the last 2 college pitchers we selected in the first round were Joey Devine and Dan Meyer. Both were traded 3 years after they were drafted to Oakland.

And Matzek drops to the Rox

Shock, Awe

Matzek should kill himself and not sign right now. He’s probably looking at the ceiling right now with tears in his eyes shouting his throat out.

that should teach him to preach about wanting big $

Yeah definitely. No sympathy for him at all. He’ll get paid, but the pain at AAA/ML will make him earn it.

Rockies normally are pretty cheap with their first rounders (Reynolds, Weathers, Friedrich). This was a great decision though.

Does this reek of Matt Harrington to anyone else?

Haha that’s what Matzek gets

You just know that these top 10 pitchers are going to fall to Boston & NY.

BTW, I’m completely over the Minor pick after seeing tonight’s lineup.

McLouth
Esco
Chip
Mac
FUGA
NORTON!
Diaz
KJ
pitcher

I missed what happened to Prado

did he aggravate the hamstring last night? I didn’t see a DL of him today.

Coming around 1st in the 15th he came up lame and couldn’t make what was an easy advance to 2nd.

any word on time to back in action?

Hopefully Kotch can come back as soon as DL time is over

I haven’t even heard anything but what the Pirates announcers noticed last night.

what was the deal with Purke

What do you mean?

curious what we didn't see in him

He was in the Matzek/Turner boat as far as wanting more money. Also, his mechanics weren’t as good as Matzek’s.

he got hurt

Crow to KC. Very interested to see what the A’s do next.

GMDM probably snapped a pen in half when Matzek got picked. Royals are willing to throw an absurd amount of money around now.

Crow either finishes the year in the majors or starts 10 there

Green to Oakland.

So jealous of that pick. Shortstops are an Oakland need too.

NEWS FLASH

McClutcheon makes an out!

Hahahaha, someone just called Green the best defensive shortstop in the draft. LOL worthy.

He’s the best defensive SS in the top 15, thats for sure

Holy crap.

what?

Rangers just picked Purke who was apparently going to fall out of the 1st round this afternoon from bonus demands.

Whelp, the HS pitchers falling prediction never really materialized. You were hearing Purke falling into the Supplemental round this afternoon.

I approve of this.

LOL on the bullshit Rizzo is spewing right now.

I thought Mike Rizzo was younger.

And they’re keeping Storen as a reliever? Come on.

Indians take White, and their guys on the floor look none too happy about it

Oh my god, Matzek looks near tears. This is hilarious

Wait, what’s happening. I don’t have the feed on.

They just interviewed Matzek…his eyes looked red and he kept looking up and stumbling over his words

Oh my

He is soo not signing.

I would put so much money on him not going to the University of Oregon. He could go JUCO and jump back in next summer though.

I want to turn this off, but the interviews keep dragging me back.

Who’s this doofus with the obscene tan?

MLB prospect “expert” and the failed former Texas GM. Gotta give it up for the great panel they got this year.

No, not John Hart. The other dude. With the big hair.

Something Marcos. He’s MLB prospect guy.

borchering to AZ

justin will be sad — he’s always looking for the next Chipper

Haha. Everyone thought hitter/pitcher was lock for the D’Backs. False.

So...

where does Minor fit, right now, into our prospect rankings. And compared to the rest of our pitching prospects. And where does everyone think he starts – A ball?

College pitcher

probably could start higher than A — probably AA depending on what the headcount is

I personally think he’ll dick around in Danville for a couple starts and finish the year in Rome.

Yeah, depends on the rotations. He could go anywhere from Danville for a few to Myrtle Beach.

I’d put him behind Heyward and Freeman now.

I’m not sure he’s top 15 right now, honestly

Really?

DeVall, Rohrbaugh, and Spruill have better ceilings, but Rohrbaugh has been incredibly inconsistent and the other two aren’t out of Rome. Teheran still hasn’t thrown this year. Hicks is struggling a lot. Kimbrel struggled and he’s a reliever. I could slot him as low as six behind DeVall, Spruill, and Teheran.

I didn’t see “pitching prospects”, I was going overall.

As you said earlier, we have several guys just like him at Rome right now

Still confused why they didn’t try to hit a home run with this pick.

Wheeler looked like the Giants shot his dog when they drafted him

That kid was positively crushed he didn’t fall one more slot.

Way to not make the flashy pick, Frank the Wrench. Could have really stumped them if you just said “pass.”

I want an interview with Frank.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/Michael-Minor.shtml

strong scouting report.

I’d like to see 2009 stats, because the 2 seasons I saw did nothing to help me

All I know

is 6-6, 3.9 ERA or something

good work with stats that matter
Hey douche

I said all I know. I’m lookin for the rest of them.

http://www.churchofbaseball.com/2009/04/2009-draft-mike-minor.html

Suck it

Hopefully his lack of a sharp breaking offering this year is just a symptom of complacency, and that coaches will get the best out of him by the end of the year. If that’s the case, and he begins to consistently pitch like he did against Cuba, then perhaps a late 1st round team like the Cubs will take a look.

HEADSMACK

hard to get all that excited about that…

Yeah

I was on the vandy site… same stuff there

110.2 IP in 16 GS
37 BB
114 K
10 HR
.262 BAA

All throughly unsurprising.

When I look at those numbers, the first thing that comes to my mind is TOP TEN PICK

1.32 whip

Man, the salt just keeps on getting rubbed in.

maybe he blew FW b4 the draft....

guess we’ll never know

Maybe they confused him with David Price 2 years ago.

I chalk it up to inexperience

the braves haven’t had to make a decision like this in 18 years…

For real

We haven’t had a top 10 since 91. And no college pitchers 1st round since Devine.

Whoa, there goes Shelby Miller. So all the bonus babies are off the board now

Amazing by pick #19. I think it’s hilarious Miller was only slightly less talented, much cheaper, and went last of the 4. Bet the Stros are upset right now.

Is Chad Jenkins' real name

really Stephen? How do you get Chad from Stephen?

middle name dork

I’m out.

Craig Biggio is wearing a WBC lanyard. Wow

“I’m very pleased with the guy that we got and I know that the baseball world thought that we were taking Zack Wheeler,” Clark said. “But we’re very pleased with the guy we got.”

YOU DIDN’T HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE ZACK WHEELER, OTHERWISE THE BASEBALL WORLD WOULD HAVE BEEN RIGHT!

“There were some pretty good players on that team and I know one of them throws 100 mph, but this guy is a winner,” Clark said. “We’ve been tracking him for a long time. We were hoping for the opportunity to select him and now I’m just hoping for the opportunity to sign him.”

He’s….a winner. Oh my god, I’m in hell.

Lol

When someone says he’s a winner, you can tell there’s not much to like. Clark can’t be pleased.

While his recently compiled statistics might not be eye-opening, the Braves saw Minor flourish when the Vanderbilt coaching staff allowed him to start calling his own games during the latter part of the season. In addition, they remembered him as the hurler who went 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA in six appearances (five starts) with the United States collegiate national team last year. After beating the Cuban national team twice, he was named Baseball America’s Summer Player of the Year. As Clark pointed out, his statistics proved to be better than Team USA teammate Stephen Strasburg, the heralded right-hander who was taken by the Nationals with Tuesday’s first overall selection.

Cuba is no joke. “Remembered” lol

that remember is pretty strong, i heard that Strasberg is ok

His numbers suffered last year at Vanderbuilt due to a lack of confidence in throwing to third and fourth-string catchers, as Vandy’s catching injuries forced inexperienced backstops into regular duty and limited Minor’s off-speed repertoire.

no wonder he was better last yr

HEY, LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!!!

http://web.usabaseball.com/news/stats.jsp?ymd=20080727&content_id=34673&vkey=recap_usab&gid=2008/07/27/jpnnat-usanat-1

Minor: 3-0, 0.75, 36 IP, 13 BB, 37 K, .179 BAA
Strasburg: 3-0, 1.06, 34 IP, 6 BB, 48 K, .137 ERA

So Mike Minor’s one less earned run in 2 more innings give him better stats. Gotcha.

he might as well of just said he has “heart”

"We were hoping for the opportunity to select him..."

Either Clark is full of shit, or he’s a fucking retard. I’m hoping it’s the former, and Minor was only selected because of money. If not, he needs to be fired ASAP. Well, I guess if he’s a “winner”, that makes up for it. He probably has a lot of heart, mental toughness, grittiness, and clutchiness as well. I just hope that he can be traded at peak value for a useful player.

Wow, Gibson is a great pick

2 rounds today?

I think we get to round 3.

We’re almost upp

David Hale 6’2 RHP Princeton

Braves draft David Hale another pitcher

Hale didnt fare to well in the Ivy league he was projected more as a 6th to 8th round pick. His fastball tops out at 93-94, He also has a decent changeup

Hale is from Marietta and pitched for Princeton. This article says he is a top 75 prospect and majored in operations research and financial engineering.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?sid=aNmDnPTWUbjE&pid=20601079

K. Law says

His fastball runs from 91 to 94 mph but is flat with just a little tailing life. His 83-84 mph slider is an average pitch right now with a hard break and adequate tilt

http://tinyurl.com/mp53wb

I still think all of you guys completely wigging out are ridiculous

So you all clearly know way more than Roy Clark & team because you’ve read a bunch of scouting reports from secondary sources. And you all clearly know what’s going on with the finances of the Atlanta Braves.

I don’t mean to pull a “Dusty Baker has managed X number of games, how many have you managed?” sort of argument, but seriously, now…

MLB drafts are unpredictable as fuck. Settle down.

I'd love to be so zen about this draft

But you don’t take a second round talent at #7 unless you’re the Pirates. This is a bullshit pick because even though Minor is described as a “safe” pick, no pitcher is actually low risk, due to the probability of injury or flame-out. Therefore, when you’re picking this high, you absolutely have to try to hit a home run by taking the second or third best player in the draft if he falls in your lap like Matzek did. If he doesn’t sign, you pick eighth next year.

I am suprised we havent taken a 3rd basemen yet unless they want to convert one of the 2 SS we drafted
