The Braves did pretty good with four of the first 100 draft picks last year, but this year while the quantity won't be there, the quality should be. The Braves have the #7 pick in the draft's first round, then don't pick again until the third round and pick number #87 overall. Then that will be it for the day.
The odds makers have us selecting either UNC RHP Alex White or Vandy LHP Mike Minor, of course we should never underestimate the love Braves Scouting Director Roy Clark has for high school pitchers. The odds are that the real apple of our eye, Georgia high school pitcher Zach Wheeler, will not be available by the time we pick.
Clark doesn't want to tip Braves' hand: Mark Bowman tries to infer what the Braves are going to do by reading the body language of Roy Clark.
Braves look to make most of early draft pick: Carroll Rogers hears the same thing Bowman does and gives us a similar but less inferred take on what the team might do today.
Could Minor be a lock: Baseball America's Jim Callis says he has the top-8 picks locked down, with the Braves taking Matt Minor.
[UPDATE: 6:40pm]
The Braves officially select Mike Minor with their first pick.

Mayo is sticking with Minor for us.

Wow Matzek is falling quickly on his list.
esadb - June 9, 2009
Why wouldn’t we take Matzek if he is still available
eaheckman10 - June 9, 2009
Money.
17843 - June 9, 2009
I'm sour on Minor
I don’t get why he’s so high, he just doesn’t seem like top of the first round talent.
gondeee - June 9, 2009
He’s safe and he’ll sign for slot. Everyone I’ve read says Minor is the most likely pitcher to win 100 games in this draft. Even if he’s a 2 WAR pitcher for six years, he’s a safe bet. The Braves can take him and have a fairly good chance of having a #3/4 starter from 2011-2016 and won’t have to worry about negotiations taking all summer. They can get him in at Rome or Myrtle Beach, give him some innings, and look forward to him being at Mississippi next year. I’m strongly opposed to the move, but…
17843 - June 9, 2009
That’s a great way to think. A lot of times the flashy players don’t pan out.
eaheckman10 - June 9, 2009
Well yeah, but we have five Mike Minors in A-ball right now. One will pan out from that group. There’s just so much more we could do with the pick.
17843 - June 9, 2009
I agree
I’m not happy if we draft Minor. I’m willing to take a chance that our pick will be a complete flop. With a pick this high I dont want someone that is a middle of rotation at best, most likely a back-end guy. Why not take a chance with a top 10 talent.
garriscp - June 9, 2009
After rereading reports on Minor
Im not sure i would take him. Alex White or Matzek would probably be better.
esadb - June 9, 2009
I agree. I trust the scouting department though and think they will make the right pick
eaheckman10 - June 9, 2009
Matsek = The best
graf - June 9, 2009
Matt Purke
I like him a lot.
esadb - June 9, 2009
He wants a lot of money.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
He won’t take anywhere near slot money
eaheckman10 - June 9, 2009
Seriously, whats with this stupid package showing former picks? A good 70% (guesstimate) of baseball players were drafted. Come on now.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Amen
And they were showing all the first rounders. I would have rather seen the people who got picked in the 26th and 44th rounds
eaheckman10 - June 9, 2009
Piazza was the first guy they showed. Haha

haha I must have fallen asleep for that. facepalm

Minor for Team USA
Saw Minor pitch here in The Netherlands last year for Team USA. He was named best pitcher of the tournament (beating Strassburg, who was on the same team)..
Rotterdam Braves Fan #10 - June 9, 2009
Damn, where's Aaron Crow on Callis' list?
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
Him and Law both have him out. Signability.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
How much is he gonna cost?
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
He wanted I think 4.5 last year, so probably something in that general vicinity…I’d stay away, you don’t want him to pull a Matt Harrington
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
How long is each team given for the draft? For each pick, I mean
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
15 minutes
Rotterdam Braves Fan #10 - June 9, 2009
No way. This is only scheduled for 2 and a half hours.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Dang
So we won’t be picking till like… 7 30?
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
It's 4 minutes each
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
4 i guess
esadb - June 9, 2009
When the hell do the picks start?
This thing is boring.
esadb - June 9, 2009
Some minor notes…
Strasberg seems a lock at 1, Ackley at 2. Sanchez is going 4th to Pittsburgh, they’ve already reached a deal. Baltimore is taking either Wheeler or Hobgood.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
I’m hearing that Baltimore is leaning towards Hobgood, so it’s all on the Orioles.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
Err...
I mean giants
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
Law said earlier he’s feeling Wheeler-Matzek/Crow-White at 5-6-7.

Has to be because of signability. These teams are fucking CHEAP

It’s ridiculous.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Is every team going to take the full four minutes to pick?!?!?
gondeee - June 9, 2009
probably the teams don't, but mlb network wants them to
Rotterdam Braves Fan #10 - June 9, 2009
They’d actually do well to expand the time for each pick to let the talking heads talk about each pick more. 1 minute discussing the first up in the air pick?
17843 - June 9, 2009
Pads take Donovan Tate
esadb - June 9, 2009
YES, Padres take Tate

I won’t criticize anything the Front Office does for a month if they pick one of Purke, Matzek, and Green and pay for them.

Yeah, I really like Green and Matzek.
gondeee - June 9, 2009
I like what I have learned about Green today
He seems to have tons of upside.
justincredubil02 - June 9, 2009
Purke is tooo skinny. If they pass on an avail. Matsek I’d be pissssed. We have extra cash because we have no 2nd. We’d def. regret it down the line.

4th and 5th are supposed to be Sanchez then Hobgood

graf - June 9, 2009
Jason Churchill on Tate…
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
But they’re boring, they have to get ATHLETIC!
Lennox - June 9, 2009
I don’t particularly agree. Tate has monster potential and if there’s one thing the Padres need, it’s high ceilinged position players. Kudos to the Padres for taking the risk; certainly better than spending comparable amounts on a HS pitcher or taking an inferior talent.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Yeah, I cut off the back end of the quote talking about his potential
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Lets not draft wheeler.
esadb - June 9, 2009
what is the down-side to Wheeler?
justincredubil02 - June 9, 2009

VictorW - June 9, 2009
Wheeler is safe pick. He’ll sign and he’s around the same talent level as Matzek or Purke, though below. Less risk and risk exclusively in a baseball sense rather than signability.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Both of those reasons.
Mainly the second one.
esadb - June 9, 2009
Theres Hobgood…come on Giants…no Wheeler…
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
no wheeler

get swoll yunel - June 9, 2009
wouldn't it be the #8 pick next year?
justincredubil02 - June 9, 2009
Yes

yes
eaheckman10 - June 9, 2009
Either way, the point still stands.
get swoll yunel - June 9, 2009
Time value of having a prospect in your system and developing him.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Is it really worth it to just make a major reach with the Minor kid over another year of delaying the time getting a prospect in your system…? It isn’t like we’re hurting for low-level pitching talent right now.
get swoll yunel - June 9, 2009
Agreed
You don’t get this kind of pick every year—unless your team sucks. The braves have to take advantage of this opportunity.
buzzdeadwax - June 9, 2009
That’s a call for someone else. I’d be hesitant to punt a pick unless the disparity in talent available is large. That’s not the case for next year from what I’ve read (tons of college pitching).

God damnit. I can’t believe we wasted our first top ten pick in years on talent that could be had at the bottom of the first round in ANY draft. If we choose Matzek and he doesn’t sign we have next years #8! Fuck. Signability.

That’s actually the point I was trying to make above. I feel like having next year’s #8 wouldn’t be the end of the world.

maybe these teams know more than the talking heads in this chat room…
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
Tomato, Tomato
17843 - June 9, 2009
87) Jacob Stewart, OF, Colorado HS
With no second round pick, making a big splash in the third round with Stewart is intriguing. It will cost a lot of money to get Stewart to pass up Stanford, but perhaps not having a second round pick would free up the cash. If they could actually sign Stewart, this is a good draft.
John Sickels thoughts
graf - June 9, 2009
The signability thing isn’t surprising at all, though… the Braves are probably hurting for cash.
They have a top 10 payroll and are currently 25th in attendance (going on %).
That is a joke.
get swoll yunel - June 9, 2009
Yeah, the Braves are strapped for cash, but that’s the kind of thinking that gets you in trouble…shorting the draft money because you don’t want a prospect that’ll cost 5million vs. 2.5 million is going to cost you in the long run. The one thing that bothers me more than most is that this guy isn’t the best player available. He CLEARLY isn’t. When you start going away from that you’re going to find yourself in the Astros position.
soup du jour - June 9, 2009
I completely agree. The draft is the wrong area to be cutting corners… in any sport, really.
get swoll yunel - June 9, 2009
Maybe he won’t sign =]
graf - June 9, 2009
Minor? If the Braves offer slot, he’ll take it, no doubt. He’s not sniffing #7 next year with Ranaudo, Blair, Harvey, Pomeranz, etc. there. I mean, we might try to go under slot, but I can’t see that.
17843 - June 9, 2009
does selig have a speech probelm? is it documented?
StottsEra - June 9, 2009
Interesting pick on Turner. He was the original “Porcello-like contract” guy and they ended up with him in the end. Matzek could easily fall another ten picks.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Pitchers like Minor can be successful in a rotation that includes a couple of hard throwers; they’d offer a much different look. That isn’t to suggest that Glavine wouldn’t have won 305 games without John Smoltz or Pedro Martinez. Rather, Glavine’s success goes to show that pitchers with supposed “fringy” stuff can make it in the majors. If Minor has a hero, it should be Glavine.
TradeAndruw - June 9, 2009
I don’t think anyone doubts Minor will be a major league starter; in fact, all the analysts I’ve seen have said he’s the safest thing in the draft. It’s just that comparable talents will be selected around pick 30. Hell, Mike Leake would’ve signed for slot and he’s a better prospect.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Another signability pick, this one at least has a reason behind it.

And Matzek drops to the Rox
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009

that should teach him to preach about wanting big $
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
Yeah definitely. No sympathy for him at all. He’ll get paid, but the pain at AAA/ML will make him earn it.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Rockies normally are pretty cheap with their first rounders (Reynolds, Weathers, Friedrich). This was a great decision though.

I missed what happened to Prado
did he aggravate the hamstring last night? I didn’t see a DL of him today.
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
Coming around 1st in the 15th he came up lame and couldn’t make what was an easy advance to 2nd.
17843 - June 9, 2009
any word on time to back in action?
Hopefully Kotch can come back as soon as DL time is over
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
I haven’t even heard anything but what the Pirates announcers noticed last night.
17843 - June 9, 2009
what was the deal with Purke
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
What do you mean?
17843 - June 9, 2009
curious what we didn't see in him
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
He was in the Matzek/Turner boat as far as wanting more money. Also, his mechanics weren’t as good as Matzek’s.
17843 - June 9, 2009
he got hurt
graf - June 9, 2009
Crow to KC. Very interested to see what the A’s do next.
17843 - June 9, 2009
GMDM probably snapped a pen in half when Matzek got picked. Royals are willing to throw an absurd amount of money around now.
Crow either finishes the year in the majors or starts 10 there
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Green to Oakland.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
So jealous of that pick. Shortstops are an Oakland need too.
17843 - June 9, 2009
NEWS FLASH
McClutcheon makes an out!
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
Hahahaha, someone just called Green the best defensive shortstop in the draft. LOL worthy.
17843 - June 9, 2009
He’s the best defensive SS in the top 15, thats for sure
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
lol, true
17843 - June 9, 2009
Holy crap.
17843 - June 9, 2009
what?
fizzbot - June 9, 2009
Rangers just picked Purke who was apparently going to fall out of the 1st round this afternoon from bonus demands.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Whelp, the HS pitchers falling prediction never really materialized. You were hearing Purke falling into the Supplemental round this afternoon.
17843 - June 9, 2009
I approve of this.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
LOL on the bullshit Rizzo is spewing right now.
17843 - June 9, 2009
I thought Mike Rizzo was younger.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
And they’re keeping Storen as a reliever? Come on.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Indians take White, and their guys on the floor look none too happy about it
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Oh my god, Matzek looks near tears. This is hilarious
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Wait, what’s happening. I don’t have the feed on.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
They just interviewed Matzek…his eyes looked red and he kept looking up and stumbling over his words
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Oh my
He is soo not signing.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
I would put so much money on him not going to the University of Oregon. He could go JUCO and jump back in next summer though.
17843 - June 9, 2009
I want to turn this off, but the interviews keep dragging me back.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Who’s this doofus with the obscene tan?
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
MLB prospect “expert” and the failed former Texas GM. Gotta give it up for the great panel they got this year.
17843 - June 9, 2009
No, not John Hart. The other dude. With the big hair.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Something Marcos. He’s MLB prospect guy.
17843 - June 9, 2009
borchering to AZ
justin will be sad — he’s always looking for the next Chipper
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
Haha. Everyone thought hitter/pitcher was lock for the D’Backs. False.
17843 - June 9, 2009
So...
where does Minor fit, right now, into our prospect rankings. And compared to the rest of our pitching prospects. And where does everyone think he starts – A ball?
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
College pitcher
probably could start higher than A — probably AA depending on what the headcount is
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
I personally think he’ll dick around in Danville for a couple starts and finish the year in Rome.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Yeah, depends on the rotations. He could go anywhere from Danville for a few to Myrtle Beach.
I’d put him behind Heyward and Freeman now.
17843 - June 9, 2009
I’m not sure he’s top 15 right now, honestly
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Really?
DeVall, Rohrbaugh, and Spruill have better ceilings, but Rohrbaugh has been incredibly inconsistent and the other two aren’t out of Rome. Teheran still hasn’t thrown this year. Hicks is struggling a lot. Kimbrel struggled and he’s a reliever. I could slot him as low as six behind DeVall, Spruill, and Teheran.
17843 - June 9, 2009
I didn’t see “pitching prospects”, I was going overall.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
As you said earlier, we have several guys just like him at Rome right now
Still confused why they didn’t try to hit a home run with this pick.
buzzdeadwax - June 9, 2009
Wheeler looked like the Giants shot his dog when they drafted him
That kid was positively crushed he didn’t fall one more slot.
Way to not make the flashy pick, Frank the Wrench. Could have really stumped them if you just said “pass.”
The Keith Lockhart Era - June 9, 2009
I want an interview with Frank.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/Michael-Minor.shtml
strong scouting report.
graf - June 9, 2009
I’d like to see 2009 stats, because the 2 seasons I saw did nothing to help me
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
All I know
is 6-6, 3.9 ERA or something
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
good work with stats that matter
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
Hey douche
I said all I know. I’m lookin for the rest of them.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
http://www.churchofbaseball.com/2009/04/2009-draft-mike-minor.html
Suck it
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
HEADSMACK
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
hard to get all that excited about that…
Smoltz's Beard - June 9, 2009
Yeah
I was on the vandy site… same stuff there
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
110.2 IP in 16 GS
37 BB
114 K
10 HR
.262 BAA
All throughly unsurprising.
17843 - June 9, 2009
When I look at those numbers, the first thing that comes to my mind is TOP TEN PICK
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
1.32 whip
graf - June 9, 2009
Man, the salt just keeps on getting rubbed in.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
maybe he blew FW b4 the draft....
guess we’ll never know
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
Maybe they confused him with David Price 2 years ago.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
I chalk it up to inexperience
the braves haven’t had to make a decision like this in 18 years…
fphjr01 - June 9, 2009
For real
We haven’t had a top 10 since 91. And no college pitchers 1st round since Devine.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
Whoa, there goes Shelby Miller. So all the bonus babies are off the board now
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Amazing by pick #19. I think it’s hilarious Miller was only slightly less talented, much cheaper, and went last of the 4. Bet the Stros are upset right now.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Is Chad Jenkins' real name
really Stephen? How do you get Chad from Stephen?
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
middle name dork
graf - June 9, 2009
I’m out.
17843 - June 9, 2009
Craig Biggio is wearing a WBC lanyard. Wow
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
YOU DIDN’T HAVE THE CHANCE TO TAKE ZACK WHEELER, OTHERWISE THE BASEBALL WORLD WOULD HAVE BEEN RIGHT!
He’s….a winner. Oh my god, I’m in hell.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Lol
When someone says he’s a winner, you can tell there’s not much to like. Clark can’t be pleased.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
Cuba is no joke. “Remembered” lol
graf - June 9, 2009
that remember is pretty strong, i heard that Strasberg is ok
graf - June 9, 2009
no wonder he was better last yr
graf - June 9, 2009
HEY, LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!!!
http://web.usabaseball.com/news/stats.jsp?ymd=20080727&content_id=34673&vkey=recap_usab&gid=2008/07/27/jpnnat-usanat-1
Minor: 3-0, 0.75, 36 IP, 13 BB, 37 K, .179 BAA
Strasburg: 3-0, 1.06, 34 IP, 6 BB, 48 K, .137 ERA
So Mike Minor’s one less earned run in 2 more innings give him better stats. Gotcha.
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
Smoltz's Beard - June 9, 2009
he might as well of just said he has “heart”
Smoltz's Beard - June 9, 2009
"We were hoping for the opportunity to select him..."
Either Clark is full of shit, or he’s a fucking retard. I’m hoping it’s the former, and Minor was only selected because of money. If not, he needs to be fired ASAP. Well, I guess if he’s a “winner”, that makes up for it. He probably has a lot of heart, mental toughness, grittiness, and clutchiness as well. I just hope that he can be traded at peak value for a useful player.
buzzdeadwax - June 10, 2009
Wow, Gibson is a great pick
bigjoe - June 9, 2009
2 rounds today?
graf - June 9, 2009
I think we get to round 3.
ATLforlife - June 9, 2009
We’re almost upp
graf - June 9, 2009
David Hale 6’2 RHP Princeton
graf - June 9, 2009
Braves draft David Hale another pitcher
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 9, 2009
Hale didnt fare to well in the Ivy league he was projected more as a 6th to 8th round pick. His fastball tops out at 93-94, He also has a decent changeup
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 9, 2009
Hale is from Marietta and pitched for Princeton. This article says he is a top 75 prospect and majored in operations research and financial engineering.

playertobenamedlater - June 9, 2009
I still think all of you guys completely wigging out are ridiculous
So you all clearly know way more than Roy Clark & team because you’ve read a bunch of scouting reports from secondary sources. And you all clearly know what’s going on with the finances of the Atlanta Braves.
I don’t mean to pull a “Dusty Baker has managed X number of games, how many have you managed?” sort of argument, but seriously, now…
MLB drafts are unpredictable as fuck. Settle down.
get swoll yunel - June 9, 2009
I'd love to be so zen about this draft
But you don’t take a second round talent at #7 unless you’re the Pirates. This is a bullshit pick because even though Minor is described as a “safe” pick, no pitcher is actually low risk, due to the probability of injury or flame-out. Therefore, when you’re picking this high, you absolutely have to try to hit a home run by taking the second or third best player in the draft if he falls in your lap like Matzek did. If he doesn’t sign, you pick eighth next year.
buzzdeadwax - June 10, 2009
I am suprised we havent taken a 3rd basemen yet unless they want to convert one of the 2 SS we drafted
