I have to say it is hard to get excited when you know that Heyward, Hanson, Medlen, Hernandez or Locke aren't down there doing their thing. Let us see who can fill their shoes!
Columbus 3, Gwinnett 2
Wes Timmons has been on Fire lately hitting .444 in his last 10 games with 6 doubles, 11 walks and 3 stolen bases. Seriously, teach him to play RF and let him just go up to the plate and take his walks. Dude has 27 of them in 158 plate appearances. Granted he only has some limited doubles power, but I think I would rather stick a dude out there who can work a count and make contact that the corpse who is out there right now. Just sayin. (I'm not really advocating putting Timmons out there, though a little part of my brain really does want it to happen just to be rid of FYF.)
Mississippi 3, Mobile 4
Mississippi was up against the guy who most likely now bears Tommy Hanson's crown as the top RHP prospect: Jarrod Parker. They did tag him for 2 runs but he struck out 9 men in 6 innings. Willi Cabrera might finally be starting to come around as he has posted an OPS over 1.000 this month and has equalled his HR output from last month in just 7 games. He posted an .818 OPS last year at Myrtle Beach with good power (32 2B and 16HR in 469 AB) with good control of the strike zone (35BB/51K). He is 22 right now so he could definitely still contribute in Atlanta in the next couple of years.
Myrtle Beach 5, Potomac 6 - Game 1 - 7 Innings
What a weird game. The Pelicans had 4 hits, 12 walks and only 3 strike outs for the game. Richard Sullivan seems to be settling in the Carolina League having allowed 3 runs or less in his last 4 starts along with a slightly higher K rate in that period. He is another ground ball pitcher in the low minors for us. We seem to have a lot of those these days.
Myrtle Beach 5, Potomac 1 - Game 2 - 7 Innings
Four games in two days for the Pelicans. That has got to be rough. I don't really know anything about CJ Lee, but he is nearly 25 years old playing in High A right now. He is hitting pretty well for the Pelicans but doesn't appear to have any pop in his bat and has never been effective stealing bases. Cole Rohrbough has a 5 something ERA right now but the fnny thing is he has given up 1 run ing 5 of his 7 starts and 3 runs in one of the others. His last start however, he gave up 10 runs and that pretty much ruined his stats. For the most part his control has been acceptable and his stuff is still good (he has 30K in 31.2IP) and I would guess that he is now our top pitching prospect (unless you want to make a case for Spruill or DeVall).
Rome 1, Charleston 4
Randall Delgado's ERA is doubling each month this season and I don't think that is really a good sign. His walks are escalating with each outing but he is maintaining a very good K rate so we know his stuff is still there. I'm not losing hope on a 19 year old, but maybe they need to pull him to the bullpen to help him get things ironed out for a few games.

Timmons
Just a quick note. You mentioned how nice it would be to have Timmons up there, taking the walks and getting on base and such. The only drawback being a lack of power. Remember, Tony Phillips was a valuable corner OF (without much power) for a number of years, primarily because he walked a ton also.

Eh...
He played a lot of MI, certainly more than corner OF.

I wonder how long Schafer will be out with his wrist thing? I really, really hope he lets it heal, tears up the International League, replaces Francoeur’s spot on the roster, and moves McLouth over to right field very soon. I’m not sure how much more of Francoeur I can take…

This.

If we can get a Schafer producing a .700+ OPS in CF and McLouth with an .800 in right we could be very very good. We just have to be able to not drop any farther back in the standings than we are right now.

Agree
Going into the Month of July we need a win streak…to put us 10 wins over .500. I think Philly now has heated up. We have two interleage series in this month and it seems we again pull the hotest AL teams….With all the moves we have had lately it is good to see Chipper leading the way so we can “jell” fast and start sweeping some of these series…up next..the pirates…they hate us now?

It looked bad when he went 0-5 with 2Ks his first game back but on Thursday and Friday he was 4/8 with 5R 2RBI HR SB 2BB and 1K. I’m not sure why he didn’t play this weekend as it could be his wrist or he was getting some time off.
But yes, I would love to see Schafer pull it back together and have him come back and post something like .250/.340/.400 so we can move McClouth over to RF and get rid of the French black whole.

It was his wrist...
He apparently tweaked it.

Expect big things from Cole Rohrbough
When he’s healthy, and staying that way is the problem for him, he’s pretty unbelievable.
But Heyward is starting to get me concerned. He seems to be banged up a lot.

I think they’re just being uber-careful with Heyward.
rbratt3 - June 8, 2009
Where is Teheran?
Haven’t heard anything about him in a while…
When is Heyward due back?
Andy Braves Fan - June 8, 2009
Teheran is in extended spring training, he’ll probably start in Danville. And who knows when Heyward is due back…
Little Lady - June 8, 2009
Probably a good idea...
Wouldn’t set a good tone to advance him before he shows he masters that level.
MichaelProcton - June 8, 2009
Or
Before he can actually stay healthy long enough to pitch a few innings…

Hey dude,
thanks again for doing these, they’re killer. Also, for any fans in North Georgia next week all the minor league teams will be home except MS, who will be visiting Chattanooga, which means it would be possible to take a fairly easy road trip and see every squad. . . I was planning on going Sunday, 6-14 to see Gwinnett, Monday to MB, Wed MS at Chattanooga and Thursday at Rome but had some stupid non baseball-related, make-or-break financial real world crap come up and ruin all my fun. So you go, and let me live vicariously through you.
Meatloafin' - June 8, 2009
Excellent suggestion.
I know how you feel about “real world crap” spoiling baseball fun. It happens to me all the time.
BTW, The new (probably 7 or 9 years old, now) park in Chattanooga is a really great place to watch a game.
fandave - June 8, 2009
Lol I still miss the old ballpark in Chattanooga. I’m hoping to catch a couple of the Mississippi games though.
I had really hoped Heyward would be in AA by the time they played their first series here, but this damn injury is messing that up.
timmy3 - June 8, 2009
I went to HS in Chattanooga...
It’s a great place to watch a game. My senior year was the year all those guys got called up from Mississippi, and I had McCann and Frenchy hit homers for me at my graduation party I hosted. Adam Dunn also came through just before I got there. I also saw a lot of Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot and Rocky Cherry.
