Like what I did with that headline? Yeah, I do too. It's been one heckuva week -- with some long anticipated good news and some unexpected bad news.
Frustrated fans voice displeasure
No, that link is not about Braves fans and Tom Glavine, it's about Pirates fans and their displeasure with their organization for trading Nate McLouth.
[...] fans used words such as "bonehead," "awful" and "typical" to describe the trade of McLouth to the Atlanta Braves for three minor league prospects. The sentiment was clear: Most people were more than willing to express their displeasure.
On Thursday, at the clubhouse table where McLouth used to play cards with relievers Sean Burnett and Jesse Chavez, a candle bearing McLouth's uniform No. 13 was lit, along with a photo of him in uniform, the Post-Gazette reported. "We'll miss him," Burnett said.
Other players were angrier.
"There ain't a guy in here who ain't [ticked] off about it," said first baseman Adam LaRoche, according to the report. "It's kind of like being with your platoon in a battle, and guys keep dropping around you. You keep hanging on, hanging on, and you've got to figure: How much longer till you sink?"
Those guys are Drama. I've never heard of lighting a candle for a traded player... that's a little weird. I also just Love it when athletes use war analogies to explain their situation. No, Adam, what you're going through is Nothing like guys getting killed in battle, not even close.
Meet Tommy Hanson, Your New Atlanta Braves Starter
Here's a great link about our new young gun. I especially like their comparison of his release points for all of his pitches -- you can really see one of the reasons why he is so tough to hit.
Tom Glavine speaks and does himself a disservice
Mark Bradley at the AJC has a good article about Glavine and his spat on 790 this morning. He echoes a lot of what I said earlier (or maybe I echoed him, either way).
Baseball Prospectus Minor League Update
Kevin Goldstein gives us an update on Jordan Schafer, who after going 0-for-5 in his return to the minors on Wednesday, went 3-for-4 with a homerun, 4 runs, and stolen base last night. Recently traded pitcher Charlie Morton also had a good night in his Pirates minor league debut, throwning 7 scoreless innings, and striking out 7.
Fresh on the market, Glavine says a couple teams have called
I promise to keep these updates to a minimum. Do we really care where he goes?
Glavine feels cheated of chance to pitch
His comments here are a bit more sane, but still just seem like a broken record.

That article about the Pirates players was hilarious. You think Adam was bitter that after getting dumped on the Pirates, he gets his best teammate taken away, and is now officially the best player on the team again?
bigjoe - June 5, 2009
lmao
I thought lighting a candle was a little weird, too. Welcome to the real bigs, Nate. ouch. lol
The Pirates doomed themselves when they changed the pirate in their logo from a Captain-looking dude, to the first mate-looking dude. The Captain one was totally better. But whatev. They even screw up their best mascot. Lame.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - June 5, 2009
They doomed themselves when they changed mascots from Pirate Parrot to Pirate Parrot + pedophile looking pirate
bigjoe - June 5, 2009
Either way, they're doomed.
I’m looking forward to sweeping the fuckers next week.
HA

Please dont jinx us.
rockybull - June 5, 2009
Not with lucky 13 on our side
Chief Noc-A-Homa - June 5, 2009
HAHA
Thats funny you should say that…..correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Braves get blanked 2 straight games earlier this season by the Pirates? Even more embarassing the are the only team to lose to Ian Snell this season. I’ll repeat…. THE ONLY TEAM TO LOSE TO IAN SNELL. He actually shut them out. LOL!

It's not like McLouth died or anything
A little overkill. But an amusing read, nonetheless.
royhobbs - June 5, 2009
I thought that same thing. I wonder if they had a candle light visual outside PNC too.
rocket8188 - June 6, 2009
I hope Schafer gets a few more days in the minors than Frenchy did last year. I assume he’ll eventually come back up when Francoeur is traded or released.
redwards95 - June 5, 2009
maybe this is just me, but I think they are going to give Frenchy an extension on proving himself AGAIN
thanks to the work he has been putting in of late. Good work. Then again, I could be completely wrong. He’s got solid D as well, which people can over-look.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - June 5, 2009
The Braves Brain Trust has hung with Frenchy for a long time now, waiting for him to get out of the ditch and back on track. To the extent they continue to perceive him to be working hard, having a positive attitude and showing occasional flashes of offensive resurgance, I think he will continue to be in the lineup.
The night after the dramatic 9th inning homerun, I heard Bobby Cox’s pre-game interview on Braves Radio and he said something like, “he’s getting his stroke back”. He also made a hopeful statement like, “… he may be about to really get it going”.
fandave - June 5, 2009
And then he went right back to sucking it the next night.
pancanbra - June 5, 2009
I hope Schafer stays in AAA at least until the All Star Break maybe til August or September just whenever his swing is back and he impresses good for a long enough time. He needs more than a few weeks in AAA thats for sure or else sending him down in the first place was stupid.
rockybull - June 5, 2009
Nice collection of articles Gondee.
And yea, lighting a candle?? Thats a little bit homo
Zeus12888 - June 5, 2009
LOL, thats what I first though.

The Adam LaRoche Insane Statement To The Media Award
Playing games as part of a Major League Baseball Team and participating in actual War (with associated death, gore and pure hell) are in no way whatsoever analogous.
Well beyond stupid.
fandave - June 5, 2009
LaRoche will pay for that one next week. (salutes)
Chief Noc-A-Homa - June 5, 2009
Real nice read by Bradley. Glad to see someone at the AJC has some sense left
Zeus12888 - June 5, 2009
Even more entertaining....
did you follow his link to his other post?

sddbaker - June 5, 2009
Seriously, a candle?
Hil-a-rious articles. Thanks gondee.
Lizziebeth - June 5, 2009
Bradley definitely summed things up nicely. And Glavine’s quote from cbssports.com:
Without any other quote, this stands alone to defends the Braves organization. Glavine left in 2003 because of money. And he was returned the favor. End of story.
Gage23 - June 5, 2009
Anybody else catch that? Ol’ rubber arm is apparently a Pirates fan. Who knew?
jug - June 6, 2009
I don’t think that’s the same Bennett.
jwrocks - June 6, 2009
Oh, I think it is.
jug - June 6, 2009
Can we have..
a biggest whine bag poll? With smoltz, glavine, and FYF going for the gold?
dabraves - June 6, 2009
gotta add the pirates players into the mix.
