Louisville 6, Gwinnett 4
Alright when did we sign Bobby Brownlie? Whatever, he started for the Braves tonight and gave up 6 runs in 4.1 innings. I know our depth has been thin since trades, injuries and promotions have gone through, but man, Bobby Brownlie?
Mississippi 6, West Tenn 3
You know I have to wonder what happened to Eric Campbell's power. Say what you want about his attitude, but he has always been able to hit a baseball a long way. Not this year however. Ryne Reynoso just continues to plug along and have a solid season starting to Mississippi. I don't know what kind of future the guy has with the organization but he has pitched well pretty much every where he has been.
Myrtle Beach 4, Kinston 7
Well that didn't last long for Kimbrel. After being utterly dominant for nearly 2 months with Rome he came back to Myrtle Beach and had a solid first outing. This was not solid however, giving up his first runs in almost a month. Frederick Freeman just keeps on hitting and Jason Heyward hasn't been bad in his last few games either. Cody Johnson on the other hand cut his strike outs for the month of June in half from the previous two months but his OPS dropped by nearly 200 points. So what do you do? Find a happy middle ground. He did this last year in the second half and put up great numbers, so lets hope that is what we are seeing here.
Augusta 5, Rome 6
JJ Hoover came unhinged a little bit in the 3rd inning when his defense allowed a couple runs to score and he hit a batter. Otherwise he was pretty solid. Only 2 of his runs were earned and he is quickly becoming the best pitcher on this roster. I will say that he was absolutely filthy in the All Star game with no one being able to make good contact against him and his breaking pitches just falling out of the zone. He was probably the most impressive pitcher there.
Danville 3, Greenville 4
They still put up 11 hits in this game. The Braves have a history of guys in the Appy league putting up big power numbers with Eric Campbell and Cody Johnson being the most recent guys coming to mind, but they have two or three guys here who could crack 10 homers I think. Julio Teheran is looking more like the hyped up pitcher we have been hearing about and he is still only 18 years old (only one of his runs was earned). He did have a wild pitch, a hit batter and a throwing error in this game so we know he is still raw, but his arm is looking good so far. Chris Masters has 14 strike outs in 6.2 innings so far. Those are Kimbrel type numbers.

You forgot to mention that...
Beachy started for the Beach.

Craig Kimbrel
Thats fucked up.
esadb - June 29, 2009
Question about Heyward:
Where will he most likely play in Atlanta? He’s been a DH, CF and RF and im pretty sure he could man LF as well. What position would he play? My bet is RF. He has a good arm doesn’t he?
Scott Coleman - June 29, 2009
Maybe the Frency experiment will be over by then and Heyward can man rightfield. He could always play in left too…
bwellnjonesco - June 29, 2009
That experiment should be over after this year, God willing.
TradeAndruw - June 29, 2009
He probably won't be a standout in any spot...
But he’s athletic enough that he probably won’t be bad in a corner spot, and his arm is good enough (if not great) to handle RF without any problems.
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
I saw an article on minor league outfielders and defense somewhere, discussing how it translated to the majors. It had several different metrics as well as some notes from scouts, and everything on it had Heyward as above average to well above average in right field with a good arm. I know they play him in CF some, but I think he’s going to end up in RF.
Michael Scarn, FBI - June 29, 2009
he has pretty much always been labeled as a RF. He plays the other spots so they can get some other people playing time or get all their best bats in the lineup.
yondaime4 - June 29, 2009
It’s good to see Schafer is back and playing well. The sooner we can get him back in Atlanta hitting like he did in April and get rid of Francoeur and Anderson, the better.
redwards95 - June 29, 2009
ha
Did you hear Bobby’s interview after tha game yesturday? Anderson isn’t going anywhere…
bwellnjonesco - June 29, 2009
Synopsis please…?
Michael Scarn, FBI - June 29, 2009
Basically, Bobby was asked about possible moves to settle the offensive woes of the team. Garrett Anderson was brought up as a possible moving piece, but Bobby quickly shot that down. Bobby added that (with his “I can’t believe you asked me that question” look) Anderson is such a great hitter and spoke about how tremendous GA has been hitting ALL season.
Thats the gist of it…Bobby loves GA…
bwellnjonesco - June 29, 2009
You guys do realize he's OPSing 748 since April, right?
Not, like, in the last two weeks or the last five games, but the last two months. And he’s getting better by the week.
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
.748 from LF, is like getting .680 from 2B.
When taking defense into account, he’s probably been worse than Kelly has this year. Bobby just sucks.
Anderson is a half win below replacement. Kelly is still at least above replacement for this year.
timmy3 - June 29, 2009
I could have swore that he just won a couple games for us…
Thats why I think stats like this are mostly a waste of time…
bwellnjonesco - June 29, 2009
“Replacement Player A” would still be marginally better.
Maybe that’s Brandon Jones?
timmy3 - June 29, 2009
And it’s a team sport so obviously, no one player wins the game.
timmy3 - June 29, 2009
You're correct!
Good thing it’s lunch time, I really didn’t want to get into this..
bwellnjonesco - June 29, 2009
I’m not heading anywhere with it… Just something I noticed.
Getting props for a .750 OPS is something that should only happen if you’re an elite defender at a key defensive position. Garret is over-matched in LF, and should really be DHing. And with his bat that means he needs to just retire.
timmy3 - June 29, 2009
It's not props.
It’s a statement that he hasn’t been awful for most of the season, and if you look at his more recent numbers, he’s been quite good.
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
No, it's definitely not.
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
I would like to see BJ and Burke in Atlanta and Diory and Blaco in Gwinnett
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 29, 2009
He's OPSing over 900 in the (nearly full) month of June.
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
I would still like to get Diaz some AB’s
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 29, 2009
Devall
Anyone know why he hasn’t pitched since the 21st?
blitzerlover - June 29, 2009
I seem to remember him having pitched like yesterday, or within the past few days…
Little Lady - June 29, 2009
Chris Masters is looking like a good pick. I wonder when Hoover will move up to the Beach
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 29, 2009
I'd bet he'll be up pretty quick if he shows he can keep his walks in check...
5 BB in 3 IP in his only start there earlier this season. They don’t want to see that again, I’m sure.
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
Masters has only 1 BB in 6.2 IP
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&cid=429
I think more than anything this is a case of a talented 21 yr old who is far too advanced to be facing rookie-ball hitters.
timmy3 - June 29, 2009
Oh you were referencing Hoover…
He’s definitely pitched awesome in Rome, I think he’s ready to move up for good.
timmy3 - June 29, 2009
Yeah, but he still hasn't been able to string together 1 or 0 BB starts.
Given that his outings usually don’t make it to 7 IP, I’d bet that’s what they’re looking for.
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
Schafer 2 SB??
BRING HIM UP!!! BRING HIM BACK!!! SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE!!!!!
did anyone see Matthews Jr steal home last night? Awesome
traphicg - June 29, 2009
I love seeing guys steal home
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 29, 2009
Wasn't there another one last night too?
MichaelProcton - June 29, 2009
Getz from the White Sox…
bwellnjonesco - June 29, 2009
Man, if Baseball Tonight was actually enjoyable anymore I’d keep up with this stuff.
soup du jour - June 29, 2009
Yeah I know I used to love watching baseball tonight but its not that good anymore
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 29, 2009
I actually saw it on CNNSI.com, they have a special story today about stealing home.
bwellnjonesco - June 29, 2009
Bobby Brownlie really?
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 29, 2009
It’s a shame he’s not a good pitcher, cause he’s such a great guy.
cbwilk - June 29, 2009
I have a Bobby Brownlie autograph. DO YOU?!
bigjoe - June 29, 2009
LOL think of who you are asking. OF COURSE HE DOES!
yondaime4 - June 29, 2009
Something like 8 or 10 of them…
cbwilk - June 29, 2009
soon to be more, now that he is a brave
yondaime4 - June 29, 2009
Yeah, since they just got him I found a few of his minor league cards I didn’t have. Bobby’s a good dude, he’ll pretty much sign whatever you hand him. He’s easy as hell to recognize too; I saw him last year at Nationals minor league camp for the first time and there was no doubt about who he was.
cbwilk - June 29, 2009
Brandon Backe is now a FA they should sign him and put him in Gwinnett
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 29, 2009
Oh god no.
