I don't know if this loss was the so much the Braves inept offense as much as it was the absolute dominance of Josh Beckett -- who seems to always own us. Beckett threw a complete game shutout, striking out 7, and allowing 5 singles. He also erased several threats by getting two double plays and getting a little help from his catcher, who threw out Chipper Jones at second base on a wild pitch that didn't get away long enough for Chipper to advance. Thanks to those plays he faced only two batters over the minimum. Beckett has now allowed the Braves only 2 runs in the last 40 innings he has thrown head to head against them.
The Braves offensively couldn't get anything going, and Derek Lowe was victimized by some lucky hits off the Green Monster and an unfortunate throwing error by Kelly Johnson. Lowe got a nice standing ovation from the Red Sox fans when he was relieved in the seventh inning.
With all that pitching and not a lot of offense -- and perhaps a sense of urgency to get the game in before the rain came -- the game lasted just 2 hours and 11 minutes.

Good news
Thank you Brian Roberts and Greg Zaun! Orioles re-take the lead in the ninth. Now close it out and keep us 4.5 back!

Ha...
I see you neglected to mention the inevitable FYF GIDP the only time we had a legit scoring chance in the game.

I predict
27 strikeout and no hits tommorow vs Wake

Fuck you, Beckett. Seriously. I mean that.

Thinkin about it
The Beckett/Lowell for Hanley deal was a huge one. Just imagine both teams if it wasn’t made.

Sell everyone that we can
and play bad on purpose to get the no.1 pick next year

Furman?
Is that you?
justincredubil02 - June 20, 2009
That's a bad idea...
because even though we had the best pick in 20 years, we’d still only pick the 24th best player.
Little Lady - June 20, 2009
Particularly if the first 23 were asking for three times what they were worth.
MichaelProcton - June 21, 2009
AMEN TO THAT!
I am all for it.

sorry guys
we were up in Boston this weekend and decided to go to the game and just like the last game we attended (last saturday in Baltimore) the Braves lost…. just this time they didn’t blow a game Beckett was just too much which was my worry going in.

Apparently Derek Lowe isn’t taking the loss too hard. I hear he’s out enjoying the Boston night life.
cbwilk - June 21, 2009
He and I were out partying together!!
mvandonsel - June 21, 2009
You were at Gypsy Bar? Nice.
cbwilk - June 21, 2009
Nah, I was kidding, I have mostly stuck to the pubs in Boston, I heard Gypsy Bar was off the hook though. I was talking to an Atlanta fan on Friday night, I guess McCann came out of the player exit and was signing a bunch of stuff for people, I didn’t see him, but the people who saw him were stoked!
Last night, I was talking to some guy that had a Carlyle jersey, he was from Omaha. The guy said Buddy grew up in his living room. He must have been legit, Buddy threw him two balls during BP, pretty cool. By the way, Fenway is ridiculous.
mvandonsel - June 21, 2009
Good stuff man. Glad you’re having fun on your trip!
cbwilk - June 21, 2009
Good to hear Buddy feels up to throwing.
MichaelProcton - June 21, 2009
I hear he used to do that a lot.
Little Lady - June 21, 2009
Yeah, he’s got a pretty seedy rep up there.

Um…shabby, nefarious, underhanded.
cbwilk - June 22, 2009
Hey, only 10 hours
until we get to see FYF and KJ try and hit a wakefield knuckball! I cant wait
Scott Coleman - June 21, 2009
Send 'em down
Send ’em down. There has to be a T-Ball team that needs help.
chicken little - June 21, 2009
Frenchy would still try to pull the ball if the T was set up all the way in the other batters box.
That a boy - June 21, 2009
Man, I used to destroy t-ball with opposite field power. It really doesn’t matter what level you play at, hitting to the opposite field is a good strategy.
