Pretty rough night in the Braves system. I did find one interesting thing though:
Jason Heyward - Player Profile
Yep, that's right, it says Jason Heyward is currently playing for the Danville Braves. I wonder if he is down there for an injury assignment? If he is, why was he never placed on the DL? Weird. Could just be a roster glitch by MILB.
Gwinnett 1, Syracuse 7
To give you an idea of how poor this game was, Pete Orr hit a homer and Ryan Langerhans had an RBI double. You know things aren't going well when those two guys are hurting you. Bullpen journeyman Rafael Cruz made his Gwinnett debut tonight after pitching...not completely awful?... at Mississippi.
Western Tennessee 4, Mississippi 5 - Final 16 Innings
An odd end to this one. Travis Jones led off the 16th with a single, went to 2nd on a balk, was sacrificed to 3rd by Phil Britton, Greg Creek and Eric Campbell were then intentionally walked, and finally Concepcion Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to score Travis Jones. Awesome. I do just want to make the point that Gorkys has seen his AVG fall nearly 30 points in the last two weeks. As a result he has posted a .697 OPS for the month of May and most of his value right now has come at the expense of lefties who he is hitting .373 against to go with a .939 OPS vs his .648 OPS against RHP. And as you can see he was caught stealing again tonight. Hopefully he can turn it around this month.
Myrtle Beach 2, Winston-Salem 4
Richard Sullivan has been an interesting case since he moved to the Beach. At Rome he pitched 29 innings and allowed 37H, 5BB with 27K and a 3.67GO/AO to go along with a .306 BAA. In Myrtle Beach he has pitched 40 innings with only 32H, 12BB and 29K and a 1.9GO/AO but only a .219 BAA. Interesting how his hits are down and walks are up and his Ks are way down, yet his ground balls are down by almost half. He is still allowing about the same amount of runs. He is just doing it differently. Or he could have been pitching much better at Rome, but the defense was so bad that it just inflated his ERA.
Rome 4, Bowling Green 7
Delgado has given up 11 runs in his last 7 innings. Hopefully there isn't anything wrong other than he is 19 in the Sally league. Sucre pushes his streak to 16 games and his AVG up to .370. He has 9 hits in his last 13 AB with four 2Bs in that span as well. He hit .389 in May and is starting June off pretty solidly. I wonder how long he has to do this for them to swap him and Matt Kennelly.

Heyward
The reason Heyward is on the Danville roster is so they won’t have to put him on the DL. They did the same thing with Cory Gearrin earlier this season. Danville is currently getting ready for the up coming season and they sent guys down there similar to the instructional league to play against live hitting and pitching to keep the timing down when they do return.

I don’t know if you guys knew this or had it posted, but Rocket Wheeler’s ex-wife Leigh Ann was killed in a pedestrian accident in Murrells Inlet SC on the night of the 28th I believe. I think services were held today.

I’m starting to think that Jason Heyward is a tad bit injury prone….

He might be one of these fast twitch muscle guys. People who are so naturally athletic their muscles tend to pull easier than those who aren’t

Obviously, Hernandez is still ready to be the starting LF next year.

Next year?
Are you crazy? He needs to be starting now! I don’t care where he plays…catcher, 3B, SS…whatever!

I know you’re being sarcastic, but if Schafer is indeed the best CF, and Gorkys can’t hit like a LF, then perhaps a move to SS or 2B isn’t such a bad idea. He’s fast and athletic, and a .750-.800 OPS plays a lot better at those positions than it does LF.

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't lay any money down on that one
Maybe opening day 2011?
