Gwinnett 0, Lousiville 5
The Gwinnett team couldn't get any offense going on the night and Toff Redmond didn't pitch well. When those two things happen you can't really expect to win your games. Jordan Schafer remains on the DL and it is a little telling that he has been out for almost two weeks now after being demoted to Gwinnett. If he can get healthy and get back to Atlanta and start producing we might actually have a productive OF. (Don't look not, but FUGA has actually been serviceable this month.)
Mississippi 8, Chattanooga 1
Pretty much the opposite of what happened with Gwinnett. Good pitching + good hitting = happy-action-fun-time. The real kicker here is that Mississippi struck out 15 times. I said at the beginning of the year this team would K a lot, but damn. Kyle Cofield has pitched remarkably well for a guy who hasn't really got much going for him. He has 45K in 71 innings with 44 walks. If you read here a lot you know I am big fan of K/IP and K/BB as indicators for success with minor league pitchers. Cofield has neither one of those things going for him right now. He does however have an incredibly good H/IP with only 53 hits allowed in his 71 innings. John Sickels picked Cofield as a possible breakout candidate this season if his K/BB and K/IP evened out. That hasn't happened but he seems to breaking out anyways.
Frederick 11, Myrtle Beach 2
Man I remember the days when Cole Rohrbough was really good. Not saying he is done, but I guess I was just expecting him to roll out and bowl people over this season. He did that for a few games so I guess I won't complain too much. Maybe he is just hitting some bumps now. Donell Linares is trying to put himself into the Braves future plans. He still doesn't strike out or walk much and I would like to see him hit for more power, but you never know what kind of a power hitter a guy is when he is at Myrtle Beach.
Rome 11, Augusta 8
You guys remember last year when it was almost every night that I was posting 5 or 6 guys per team? I miss those nights a little. Stephen Shults might have benefited from his time with the Myrtle Beach club where he hit well in the few games there and appears to have brought it back with him. This guy is a beast from everything I have ever heard about him and I'd like to see him tap into his ridiculous physique. JJ Hoover has probably been the most consistent pitcher for Rome this year not allowing more than 4 runs in any appearance this season (at Rome anyways). His 63/7 K/BB is the stuff of legends also. Paul Clemens still hasn't tapped into his electric stuff yet as he gave up 4 runs in 2 innings tonight. Also Craig Kimbrel has not allowed a run in over a month and has a sub 1.00 ERA. MOVE HIM BACK UP.

Can you consider Santamaria a prospect
Heyward is the next crime dog - June 20, 2009
meh, sure. He is still young enough to develop. but he profiles similar to people we have already. Speedy dude without much power.

Schafer was scheduled to take two weeks off minimum with the wrist after the MRI came back with the bone bruise.

I didn’t even notice, show’s how much I care about the Lookouts.
BigG1392 - June 20, 2009
Ya'll are crazy...
I was at Lookouts games every week when I lived there in high school. Great park, decent level of prospects.

Craig Kimbrel’s line in 15 appearances for the Rome Braves is just crazy:
0.95 ERA, 10 S, 19.0 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 37 K, .136 AVG
fandave - June 20, 2009
How old is Kimbrel?
and why isn’t he up at MB or even Mississippi yet?
Scott Coleman - June 20, 2009
He was at the Beach, and got treated like a redheaded stepchild.

Born: 05/28/1988. So, just turned 21.
He had 8 appearances for the Pelicans earlier in the year and was horrible bad wild. His line there:
10.97 ERA, 1 S, 10.2 IP, 10 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 1 HR, 18 BB, 15 K, .256 AVG.
No won/lost record either at the Beach or in Rome.
In the 2008 draft, he was picked in the 3rd round out Wallace State CC (location: Hanceville AL). After signing, he made a very impressive partial season debut, logging time in Danville (rookie league), Rome and MB. Aggregate line in 24 appearances:
3 W, 2 L, 0.51 ERA, 10 S, 35.1 IP, 16 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 15 BB, 56 K, .131 AVG.

I just wrote about the M-Braves hitters Matt…how fucking bad are they really?
bigjoe - June 20, 2009
Pretty bad all around I guess. Not a single hitter on this team stands out. no one projects as an every day MLer at this point. The best prospects still remain Hicks, Cabrera and Concepcion to me. Britton is interesting, but hits like a catcher from the 80s. Matt Young I think has the best chance of helping the braves in the future simply because he has two skills that are actually pretty good: he can walk and and he can steal a base. Granted he has been caught almost 50% of the time this season, but I think it is something he can work out.
yondaime4 - June 20, 2009
Yeah, I mentioned Matt Young yesterday…he could probably make the majors as a fourth/fifth outfielder kind of guy
bigjoe - June 21, 2009
anyone see Furman Biships new article on why we're going to trade Chipper?
SayHeyWerd - June 20, 2009
i thought about doing a fanshot, but i figured it wasn’t even worth anyone’s time
