Via the latest Bradley Buzz, the Atlanta Braves are apparently interested in Mark DeRosa, or so says Jayson Stark of ESPN.com:
You can add the Braves to the list of teams with interest in their old buddy, Mark DeRosa. Cleveland wants pitching back, and the Braves are one club with a pitching surplus. But teams that have spoken with Atlanta say the Braves' entire prospective rotation (including Tommy Hanson) is off-limits. And they would want a significant return for Jo-Jo Reyes, Charlie Morton or Kris Medlen.
The Braves would obviously talk about dealing young arms for an impact bat, a la Matt Holliday. But they've been telling clubs that if they give up young players for any hitter with a hefty paycheck, they would expect the team they're dealing with to pick up a major chunk of the salary.
I've been on the fence about the whole acquiring a "bat" thing. There's no doubt we definitely need better production from our outfield, that's for damn sure, but the "who" to acquire is the real question for me. I like Mark DeRosa, but I don't think he's the everyday impact player who will definitively turn around the Braves offense. Then again, I'm not sure a Matt Holliday would either (see his home/away splits from his time at Coors).
If the Braves want any sort of impact bat in return, they're going to have to part with something of value -- do Reyes and Morton count as value?
Don't get me wrong here, Mark DeRosa would be a substantial upgrade over either Garret Anderson or Jeff Francoeur, and in my mind is worth more than either Morton or Reyes (or Francoeur, but the Indians need pitching). Speaking of Frenchy, Stark says this:

Isn't adding the bat of Francoeur kind of like subtraction by addition? I keep telling myself "we need to give Francoeur one more month to turn it around, one more month, one more month. I've gotta stop that. Francoeur is an utter drag on our offense, and I'm about ready to completely give up on him. Rowland's Office has obviously had enough of him already, as they have been referring to him as the Lilburn Flash in the Pan.
The question in trading Francoeur becomes, "who then plays right field?" Who will be this year's Jason Perry? The homerless Brandon Jones? Brian Barton, Gregor Blanco, ... Joe Borchard? Do we have anyother D-caliber outfielders with a name that starts with a B? Matt Diaz is a B-caliber outfielder with a name that starts with a D, and he has played some right recently, but we're sacrificing a significant amout of defense with Matty in right.
After all that rambling I'm still stuck. DeRosa would be a decent addition. I'm not as hyped about Holliday. And I'm ready to see Jeff Francoeur put on a uniform other than that of the Atlanta Braves. The bottom line in all of this talk is that we need more production out of our outfield... but, then again, we've known this since last season, and all the team did about it was sign Garret Anderson. The Braves need to wake up and do something while we're still only 4-games out.

If DeRo is a +2 wins for the rest of the year, and fyf is -1 win for the rest of the year, that’s like adding a +4 win guy to replace a +1 win guy. Since fyf is so bad, adding a slightly above league player is the same as adding an impact bat.

Derosa is NOT the significant return that the Braves are looking for in trading one of there young starting pitching prospects. Acouple months of Derosa rates giving up a guy like Morton? I don’t think so and would give us a marginal upgrade and still not be a longer term (Beyond 09’) solution to a OF RH powerbat. Unless we can get Dero for JoJo than I rather pass and move on to Willingham/Luke options that will be on this team in 10’

I’m pretty sure the Indians will want some value back if they traded Derosa. We are not the only team looking at him, so they don’t have to settle for anything too weak. I think Morton for DeRo would be excellent for us, but I expect them to want more for a guy that hit 20+HRs and .285/.376/.481 last season. Also, Mark’s abilities to play different positions will make him even more desirable for other teams.
I think the market for DeRo will be too big for what we want to give up.

When you mention that the trade has a chance to look one sided, what do you expect when you trade unproven prospects for proven MLB vets. You are pretty much trading away the chance that the player has of being successful in the majors. We took that chance with Tex and we lost the edge of that deal. We took that chance with Jair and Gorkys and it worked out for us. Other deals work out differently…

I dont really care to trade Morton for a rental in DeRo i mean its not like he is all that great. He is solid but i dont think he is a difference maker. Maybe they are hopin to rob a team like they did with the Dodgers last year when they got that good young Catching prospect for Blake lol. OK, in 190.2 IP Reyes has given up 216 hits, 95BB, and 129 ER for a 1.63 career WHIP and 6.09 career ERA. Thats spread out between three different seasons and not a small sample size. A team isn’t going to accept that as a centerpiece of a trade. DeRo has a pretty high value right now, he will get them a LOT more.
AND, I actually have alot of faith in JoJo. I defended him, or tried to, all offseason, so I hope he gets his stuff together. However, JoJo is more bust than potential right now.
Same idea with Morton, although I believe Morton has more value.

IMO to have a legitimate chance at the playoffs we need to get our OF (overall) up to average production.
So, whoever we add, basically, has to not only be an upgrade over FYF, but needs to be a big enough upgrade to the entire OF to get that production level up to something close to average. DeRosa is an upgrade over FYF, but he’s not going to make up for having Schafer in CF every game.

I don’t know why people in this blog consider Charlie Morton an expendable piece. The guy was injured last year and he has demostrated in AAA that he can be a very good pitcher, if not a starter then a reliever. There is never enough pitching so you shouldn’t be so trigger happy when it comes to trades. Remember the last time the Braves were desperate for a bat they unloaded the whole farm system for a guy who wasn’t a great thing in a Braves uniform (The artist known as Mark Teixeira).
Medlen, Hanson, Morton, Jurjens are a foursome which can be a superb starting rotation if given the time to mature. If that plan fails, Medlen and Morton can be excellent, cheap and very effective relievers.
Finally Gondee. According to Dewan’s +/- defensive metrics, Jeff Francouer was THE WORST DEFENSIVE RIGHT FIELDER IN THE GAME in 2008, so Diaz couldn’t do it any worse.

Tex had good numbers, but he wasn’t clutch enough when needed. Certainly I didn’t like his “PR I’m a good guy, I always say the right thing” attitude, or his “I’m a slow starter” excuse last april when the team was falling apart. He is another A Rod, a guy too afraid to be himself so he always has to show his persona.
And for him the Braves gave Andrus who leads the AL rookies in VORP and is a stud in SS defensively, Salty who if given a chance can be a really good catcher and Neftali Feliz, for who every scout drools when mentioned.
I’ ve said it before, why not fortify the bullpen with Morton and Glavine? Demote Moylan who clearly is not ready for the big boys yet and Bennet who is losing all the extra innings games and can’t keep being lucky with that + .350 BAA and low ERA. Bring up Hanson, keep Medlen in the rotation and trade Javier Vasquez?
I’m getting tired of the Bad inning syndrome the guy suffers almost every start. (I wasn’t surprised he couldn’t finish the 7th on saturday). Now I’m getting why the White Sox were desperate in getting rid of the guy.
This is the best Vasquez we are going to see, he is in peak now with all those big strike out numbers, so trade him for a big bat and give the kids a chance to shine.
If the Braves package Vazquez with Parr, Francouer, Campillo, Reyes, Brandon Jones or anyone of those expendable guys they could get a big bat without giving too much.

All he did for us was produce, particularly after we traded for him in ’07, his production was just crazy.
Beyond, that, the very presence of a legitimate power hitter in the middle of the lineup and a gold glove caliber defender at first base helps a team tremendously. Even during his “slow start” for us, he was OPSing near .800. If your team can’t ‘weather’ two months of a ‘slumping’ hitter putting up above average production instead of the monstrous production that he puts up later in the season, then it isn’t that players fault that the team isn’t contending.
If you want to argue that the trade was a bad one, because we didn’t have the other pieces needed to win, that’s fine. Acting like it’s Teixeira’s fault that we didn’t have the other pieces needed to win, however, is just ridiculous.

Hits righties decently, and is a stud against lefties and is only 27… A career .287/.353/.439 line but has never been given a full time job really. As a 24 year old, in his one full big league season he posted an .809 OPS for the Cubs.
This year he’s hitting .411 for Colorado Springs right now, and the Rox seem like a sensible trade partner.

DeRosa is not the answer
I like DeRosa. I think he’s a great versatile player. He’s just not the answer as a full time RF for us. He’s a mid-to-high .700’s OPS type player. His offensive spike last year was very wrigley field aided. Obviously he would be an upgrade over Francoeur, I just hope we are setting our sights a little higher. There are a lot of other better offensive options out there that we should be exploring.

Even though I mentioned trading Morton earlier I would like to shy away from trading any of the young pitching at all, especially with the promise they are showing now as potentially the best 1-4 future rotation in baseball. I live in Seattle and we finally have something that resembles depth in the pitching department with Vargas, Olson and Jaukabauskus and that is all that has kept the M’s from totally imploding on themselves. i was one of the select few who was happy we signed him instead of Griffey or Edmonds in March. I’ve also said we need to give him a few more ABs before we DFA him. The man has incredible career numbers and knows how to hit.

Why is Schafer getting out of all this? He strikes out every other AB, cant get a 2 out hit with a RISP to save his life and yells FUCK! every time he messes up. The only thing he has going for him is his defense. I would say speed too, but you actually have to get on base for your speed to matter.

As one of the guys who tried to support GA amidst TC’s onslaught back in March, I’ve been pretty pleased w/ his bat, now that he seems to be healthy.
His defense, however, still seems to be a little shaky.

We need two big bats not one
with one he will just get pitched around. I am not saying we don’t have any good bats because we do.
Chipper and McCann are good examples But Chipper is older and on the bench or DL list part of the year.
Mac has to have some days off because of the position he plays. We have others on the team that hit a homer every so often and some that drop in some nice hits if not in a funk!
We need two that are known threats every time they step up to the plate to hit back to back in the line up ……but one is better than none!

Question-Does Frenchy have options left?
I realize he would probably have a fit but does he have options left? I would think they just bite the bullet and realize that he isn’t going to get any better and send him to AAA. At least with the team being up the road in Gwinnett he can still stay at home etc. So he can’t complain about the hardship on the family etc.
However, he needs to see minor league pitching so he can re work his swing. The braves could put ANYONE in RF and fill his immediate roster spot. If he doesn’t click at AAA…send him to AA. If he doesn’t click at AA..send him to A ball. At the end of the season he will either come around or be down in Short Season rookie league before he gets released.

Actually while you are at it…give Jordan a ride there two. Poor guy needs to see some AAA pitching. We are not helping his case by leaving him in Atl. Bring Blanco back up…have him play CF and lead off. Bat Kotchman 2nd…KJ 3rd…Chipper 4th…McCann 5th…Yunel 6th…Diaz/Anderson 7th and RF 8th.
Yes..I know that Blanco isn’t hitting in AAA right now but I would happily take his .250 bA and .350 OBP right now in the lead off spot.

This is why I don’t buy that this team will trade FYF if they have the chance. If they wanted to improve the lineup, they’d send him down and call up BJones. They’re worried about keeping him happy because he’s the local kid that brings the teeny bopper crowd to the games, and they still view him as a potential superstar / face of the franchise type of player.

That’s what scares me about management. They’ll sacrifice a player and his career to get fans in the stands. If they really cared about FYF and Schafer, they’d send them both down.
It amazes me that most people go to games just don’t have a clue about the team. FYF gets lauder fanfare than Chipper Jones. What the f*ck has FYF done for this team? Chipper does everything better and has won a World Series.

Unless you are the Marlins, teams should try to think long term when it comes to position players. In this case, the Braves tried to sell Mr. Fail as the face of the franchise and it backfired. Under normal circumstances, they would have sent him down a long time ago.

I like DeRosa and I think he would have value for any MLB team…especially one with as many potential holes as the Braves have. However, his numbers the last couple of years have been a largely impacted by the parks he played in…he played in Texas and Wrigley. He would be a good cog in the machine…but wouldn’t be the band aid to the offensive problems. Right now he represents a fill in for Jones at 3B and a possibility for RF if you bench/move Frenchy or a platton partner in LF if you decide to give Diaz Frenchy’s ABs.
