Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 5/6

Syracuse 0, Gwinnett 2

  • B. Jones 1-3 RBI, BB
  • K. Medlen 7IP 2H 0R 1BB 10K

Seriously, if there is a better 1-2 punch in the minors right now other than Hanson/Medlen please tell me who it is. This is getting ridiculous. Medlen improves to 4-0 on the season (Hanson is 1-3 I believe) and has allowed 24 baserunners in 30.2 innings. Just awesome. He is going to have to stay a starter at this rate.

Tennessee @Mississippi - Postponed

Too much rain, not enough baseball.

Myrtle Beach 3, Lynchburg 3 - Game 1 Suspended

Game 2 - Postponed

Lexington 2, Rome 4

  • J. Campusano 3-4  2B, RBI
  • S. Sime 2-4 2B, 2 RBI
  • J. Thompson 8IP 5H 2R 0BB 6K

A really nice start from Thompson here after getting roughed up in the last couple outings. He is another guy who has excellent control with only 3 BB in 35.1IP. I'm not sure how many guys he is going to strike out but he has a pretty solid groundball rate. Too many good pitchers on this team. Well thats not really possible is it?

What are we going to do with Medlen, we can’t very well put him back in the pen at this rate?

We have an awesome problem on our hands and I’m pretty sure Kawakami is going to wind up being one of the more expensive relief pitchers in the league.

And he went 2-3 with the stick as well. Dude can flat out hit. He’s definitely the extra pinch hitter/runner off the bench for whoever.

LOL you really need to learn to gather your thoughts and then post.

Kris just needs to quit being so multi-talented.

Except don’t.

Im willing to give JoJo and KK 2 more starts apiece, but if they both keep sucking, Hanson and Medlen up and JoJo and KK down (or atleast to the bullpen or DL for KK).

I wouldn’t say that Jo-Jo has been sucking.

Agreed

But I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts to pitch like he’s accustomed to, well since he’s been in the majors. Hopefull I’m wrong though.

I think you will be...

Jo-Jo just looks so much more confident up there this year. He needs to avoid the One-Bad-Inning Bug, but I think he’ll be fine. Now, whether he does well enough to keep the job away from Hanson, Medlen, or Morton is yet to be seen…we shall see.

And Jo-jo's bad inning against Houston

really came off of a bunch of singles, if I remember. There was a bunt single, then a few more that weren’t exactly hard hit-it’s not like guys were pounding the ball against him.

This.

That stuff is largely out of a pitcher’s control. He had a pretty decent outing that day— and looked a lot more like a major league pitcher than a lot of guys making a lot more money do. He didn’t dominant, but Cox also pulled him to early (77 pitches) so that Bennett could come in and allow a couple runs to score anyways.

Just Hope

I just hope the Braves dont do anythnig stupid like trading Medlen.

It is def a good situation for the Braves it almost makes me wish we had made this year a full rebuilding year and just let the kids play

International League Strikeout leaders

1. Tommy Hanson – 48
2. Kris Medlen – 38
5. Charlie Morton – 30

I really want to see Morton in the MLB pen. He has a power arm that would fit well as a setup/middle relief guy.

seconded...

He may be more valuable to the Braves as a nice trade piece.

I doubt we trade Medlen…hes a surefire steady reliever at the very worst. At the best, I don’t even know where his potential stops (well, it isn’t THAT high). Does anyone know how well his changeup is developing? Didn’t he add a changeup, when he began starting?

I think...

He’s mainly a fastball/curveball/changeup pitcher who will occasionally show a slider.

Interesting idea. Might be worth a try.

I've got to tell you Yondaime...

2 out of 5 times I come to work in the morning, it absolutely makes my day when I check your minor league update and theres a line from Hanson or Medlen.

It’s just orgasmic.

First thing I do at work every morning is check Youdaime’s updates. Then I check out Firstinning for some 20 sec ideas for later.

Are any of the minor league publications talking up Medlen yet?

Medlen’s so under-rated.

He’s our fifth best prospect IMO. And in our organization, that means something— because the four guys ahead of him are all no-brainer top 100 prospects.

Baseball America had him rated 9th in our system before the season. Considering our talent, that’s pretty high.
