Derek Lowe was able to dominate the Blue Jays tonight, both on the mound and at the plate, as he collected his 6th win of the season and the Braves' 4th win in their last 5 games. In addition to pitching 7.2 innings and allowing just a pair of runs, Lowe was also able to collect a pair of singles, and both drive in and score a run. One of the more entertaining experiences of my Spring Training trip this year was watching Lowe take a round of batting practice. He has a lot of fun, but he's very serious about his hitting, something that Atlanta pitchers have been known for, and it paid off tonight.
Mike Gonzalez ran into some troubles in the 9th, as he's been somewhat prone to do this season, but fortunately Rafael Soriano was able to come in and close the door, collecting his 4th save of the season. The offense was able to put enough runs across against Casey Janssen, who pitched pretty decently for a guy who hasn't pitched in a Major League game in a year and a half. Being able to score a little without the tandem of Chipper Jones and Yunel Escobar in the lineup is a good sign. Casey Kotchman is getting on a little bit of a roll, driving in a pair of runs with a double after driving in the game winning run last night. It seems that moving him into the 2 hole was one of the more shrewd moves made by Bobby Cox this season.

In a barely related note, I got Paul Molitor’s (a former Blue Jay) autograph tonight here in Norfolk.

ummm...
you say it’s Lowe’s 5th win, when it’s his 6th.

I mean, what are numbers really? Let’s all just be thankful that he broke the 0-2 streak that I had going on the nights I do the posting.

Congrats, CB!
I was gonna ban you from posting game threads if we’d lost again. Alas, DLowe saved you!
Kidding.

2 games above 500
back to back solid wins, have to like our chances for a sweep if JJ continues to deal …

Talk about flying under the radar
The Braves are hot right now, and ESPN’s online cover stories focus around the Nats and Pirates sucking. haha. I hope the Braves keep it up. The best kept secret in baseball this year. People will have to listen in the next couple of months, even if they don’t want to.

seriously if the Braves could catch any offensive heat they could go ape shit in the standings.

Didnt catch the game but from reading some of the recaps of the game it seems as though Diory Hernandez was making some pretty good plays with the glove??
Is this true or were they standard defensive plays?
drumzalicious - May 24, 2009
I would say solid. He took some shots and got rid of them all cleanly.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - May 24, 2009
But...
Solid is a bit more than anybody expected, especially with as many plays as he had to make last night.

I was pleasantly surprised with his glove tonight. I have seen him make a few mistakes in Gwinnett, so I was a little concerned.
GwinnettBraves - May 24, 2009
He handled all the balls right to him. His range is not that great, but I’ve only seem him in this one game. He’s good enough to be a reserve shortstop at the least

Put together a few good ABs too.
Smoltz's Beard - May 24, 2009
It’s time to use Soriano as the closer and Gonzalez as the setup man.
