Wow, that was exhilarating. 3 blown leads, 4 starters on the bench to start the day, a 3 inning outing from the starting pitcher, and the Braves still prevail. Unbelievable. So many guys to praise today...Prado, who we all crapped on when we saw him starting over Kotchman, had the go ahead run in the 8th and hit the game winner in the 12th. How about Chipper, who reached base 4 times drove in 2 and scored 2? Or even Garret Anderson, who had his best game as a Brave...3 for 5 with 3 RBI. Even Kelly Johnson, coming off the bench, goes 2 for 3 with a double and the initial go ahead RBI in the 8th. The bullpen was money after the 5th, allowing 1 run on 7 hits and striking out 8. These are the type of games that we'd horribly fail at last year, and we're starting to win a little this year. A fantastic rebound from last night, don't you all think?

Great win.
makes up for the disaster last night.
and i appologize for complaining last night about Benett and GA and the minor leagues. I look like an idiot for posting that (and it’s not the first time i’ve mad a mistake) im sorry im sorry im sorry im sorry im sorry!
GO BRAVOS.
Scott Coleman - May 13, 2009
Your Sig.
True, but ouch.
nick9314 - May 13, 2009
changed it
figured it might bring the kid some luck. he’s something like 3-28 or something like that.
Scott Coleman - May 13, 2009
Nice job with the quick recap. A couple things if you don’t mind I’d like to point out:
- Top of the lineup really looked good today, including GA. Let’s hope this is a step in the right direction. Good to see Kelly come in with some big hits also.
- Prado…not much else I need to say.
- 2 runs in 9 IP from our bullpen today (only two BB as well). That includes 2 scoreless from yesterday’s goat…Jeff Bennett. People can get in line to apologize whenever they want.
Smoltz's Beard - May 13, 2009
very true about the 'pem
and the 9th inning should’ve been totally different if the umpire wouldnt of blown the call at 3rd with Beltran. The bullpen has really turned it around since the first 10 games or so.
Scott Coleman - May 13, 2009
I think SB was talking to you about the apology. You really freaked out about Bennetts outing.
bbxxj - May 13, 2009
no he said “people” can line up for an apology. i know i wasnt the only one complaining last night.
Scott Coleman - May 14, 2009
Just goes to show
that relying on single data points (games) to reach conclusions (such as the bullpen, or Jeff Bennet in particular sucks) is dangerous and usually faulty. That’s not to say there hasn’t been more examples of poor bullpen pitching than just last night, but Tuesday’s game sure brought a lot of comments about it out. Great game for the Braves today and obviously, a stellar road trip. Other than the first week of the season, the team’s first real momentum.
MrGrinch - May 13, 2009
good point grinch

angrysmurf - May 13, 2009
i’ll echo the love there for your sig
Zeus12888 - May 13, 2009
SB, I came here specifically to find you and to offer my CONGRATULATIONS to Bennett for a nice outing and helping us beat the Mutts. It’s sweeter still that it let us come away with a series win! (IMO we actually swept the boogers if it hadn’t been for a crap call by the ump the other night)
I’ll bitch when he fails, but I’ll also sing his praises when he doesn’t.
NCChopper - May 14, 2009
haha…it’s all good.

Love Esco rockin the backwards shades there…like a boss
Zeus12888 - May 13, 2009
Yep. Bobby doesn't want 'em covering up the 'A'.........respect
Chief Noc-A-Homa - May 13, 2009
I really respect that. Might not agree with everything Bobby does, but he is a class act, through and through.
Zeus12888 - May 13, 2009
Those blue uniforms are magic, man. Magic.
I wish they would wear them on Sundays. I’m not a big fan of the reds, to be honest.
~ See, on a Sunday they should do blue uni with blue and red cap. That would look pimp.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - May 13, 2009
The reds are my favorite unis, Blues are good too, > the grays.
MatM - May 13, 2009
I really liked the reds at first, but now I wish they’d wear some darker pants with them.
Bronn - May 13, 2009
they hurt my eyes
BeantownVol - May 14, 2009
Whats Funny
They were the bane of our existence last year we lost like every game we played in them
drumzalicious - May 13, 2009
That’s true. I do remember that. The blue jerseys were jinxes.
Gage23 - May 14, 2009
yup
That’s the jersey Glavine chose the day he took his first trip to the DL ever. Huge jinxes last year!
McGriff the Crime Dog - May 14, 2009
Thank heavens it's not last year!
Go blue!! (But let’s see some grey on the road as well!)
Chief Noc-A-Homa - May 14, 2009
Big Joe, how many clicks did you hand out today?
Zeus12888 - May 13, 2009
I haven’t done it yet
bigjoe - May 13, 2009
gondeee who?
mvandonsel - May 13, 2009
haha
Smoltz's Beard - May 13, 2009
Fun game, but bring on Medlin and Hanson. Lates, Jojo.
Meatloafin' - May 13, 2009
I'll be interested to see what they do, because Glavine will probly make a start late this month...
Wonder if JoJo will get another shot….the Braves are hot right now, and I’ll be damned if a bunch of New Yorkers are going to win 2/3 in their own park. Fuck You New York (sans any Bravos fans there) ;~)
Chief Noc-A-Homa - May 13, 2009
Manuel said before the game: “Momentum in my opinion is something you can’t really determine until it’s past you.”
Well Jerry, look in your rear view and take a gander at it flying back to Atlanta!
Zeus12888 - May 13, 2009
Just got home and they were showing highlights from the last half inning. I love the fact that Reyes broke out his HR trot…stupid bastard.
Smoltz's Beard - May 13, 2009
Like I said....
….dumb as a bag of rocks.
sddbaker - May 14, 2009
Except annoying, too. That stupid grin all the time…
WienerDog - May 14, 2009
I thought I
was the only one annoyed by Reyes smirk. The night before, when Bennet walked him in, the cameras panned to the guy while he’s on 3rd & he’s clapping his hands & grinning like a school girl. Real bush league. Todays win was great & not to take nothing away from the Braves but it was sweet to see Reyes contribute to the win w/his stellar baserunning (insert sarcasm + smirk). Appreciate Bobby’s class, putting Bennet back on the mound the day following his bad outing. The Bravos are pulling it together. Gotta be careful not to let their guard down against Arizona.
adc62 - May 14, 2009
That was a gift, he would’ve been on 3rd with no outs. Sloppy sloppy.
TradeAndruw - May 14, 2009
Hence why I loved it.
Smoltz's Beard - May 14, 2009
Hey, did I mention I saw your namesake walking around the Atlanta airport last Sunday night?
Uninvited - May 14, 2009
huh?
Smoltz's Beard - May 14, 2009
Shouldn’t he be in Boston?
Anyone see Werth steal home yesterday? Not that I want use to try it.
TradeAndruw - May 14, 2009
Extended spring training in Ft. Myers this week as part of rehab. Might as well spend a night at “home” flying from Boston to FL.
Lizziebeth - May 15, 2009
Smoltzie...
I was in Atlanta for Mother’s Day and flying out that Sunday night. Went through security, down the escalator and saw him heading towards baggage claim. I thought it was interesting that I passed him walking while the Red Sox were playing on national television 800 miles away.
I did take the opportunity to walk up to him, ask him if I could borrow a dollar, kick him in the shins, call him a greedy backstabber, and run away.*
*This may not have actually happened.
Uninvited - May 14, 2009
Haha, nice man. Loved the player, can’t say I really like the person that much anymore.
Smoltz's Beard - May 15, 2009
Yeah, the bullpen looked great. GA played well after I lit into him on a fan post reply last night (maybe he reads Talking Chop….yeah right:). And Bennett gets his self esteem back with 2 solid innings. I really like how Escobar is playing right now. And Jeff Francouer I have lost tons of confidence in. As I said in the game day thread. New nickname is “The Craptual” until/if he ever gets back on track. And that last breaking ball Gonzo threw was filthy.
Jerret Anderson - May 13, 2009
This team is already so much more entertaining than last year. As soon as the Braves lost the lead last year, you just knew the game was over. This year, I feel like anything can happen. I love their makeup. They’re playing with heart!
They’re definitely worth the price of admission and I hope that more folks in Atlanta agree with me.
Little Lady - May 13, 2009
well i guess GA and Benett can stay for now. but as for JoJo, please send him down.
I dont care at this point who pitches for us. just not jojo. DONT trade him tho. i dont want another kyle davies situation to bite us in the butt.
p.s. with the off day tomorrow, any chance we can skip jojo’s or whoever our 5th starter is next start??
Scott Coleman - May 13, 2009
You don’t want JoJo to pitch for us anymore, but you don’t want to trade him? That leaves either keeping him in the minors forever, or just releasing him I guess.
Smoltz's Beard - May 13, 2009
well then
i guess we’re keeping him in the minors forever.
Scott Coleman - May 14, 2009
Davies is 2-1 with a 5+ ERA…. how did that come back to bite us in the ass?
cmdpsu15 - May 13, 2009
He started off the season well
not so much recently
ATLforlife - May 13, 2009
Jo-Jo it's time to say bye-bye.
He just doesn’t have it in the majors, maybe he needs a change of scenery or maybe he just sucks, but it’s time to cut the cord. As for GA, I’m not sold still, if he continues to hit like this, then I’m good, but his bat has to be good to make up for his terrible fielding. I didn’t like the signing then and I’m not really on board now either, but hey, I’d rather be proved wrong than be right.
Perrinbar - May 13, 2009
Isn’t it lucky that Morton and Jo-Jo are on the same schedule?
Little Lady - May 13, 2009
Let's play a game
Name that Pitcher:
Through his first 43 games:
245.2 IPs, 4.77 ERA, 9W 21L, 1.435 WHIP, K:BB 1.08
Through his first 38 games:
186.2 IPs, 5.89 ERA, 5W 15 L, 1.63 WHIP, K:BB 1.37
One of these guys is JoJo, the other is a Future Hall of Famer…Braves’ fans should be familiar with him…his name is Tom Glavine – one of the best LHP of all time and a perfect example of why we shouldn’t give up on anyone too quickly.
justincredubil02 - May 13, 2009
I get your point but Glavine had a worse team behind him
Your talking 87-88. I think the braves won 110 games both years. I also believe that the 1988 braves were one of the worst teams in the entire decade we call the eighties.
I’m not saying we should give up on Reyes but most people knew glavine was going to be something special and no one thinks that of Reyes.
Charmin519 - May 13, 2009
It’s a decent point (and one that was made before the season) but keep in mind that Glav’s ERA was a full run lower. Maddux had a shaky rookie season, too. But this isn’t JoJo’s first rodeo. He’s had his shot this year – and he’s failed with only one exception. And that would be ok for the 1987 Braves, but this is not that team. We’re looking to win now.
Weldon - May 13, 2009
no we are not
we are looking to compete now and compete later.
justincredubil02 - May 13, 2009
I think we’ve played this game before
Euruproktos - May 14, 2009
I'm watching the game again (and I missed the 5th) Go Omar!! Go GA!!!
lol. Citifield kind of sucks for the most part. The Yankees (an AL team) should be playing here, and the Mets should be playing at a field the size of new yankee stadium.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - May 13, 2009
I was driving when we won, so...

mvandonsel - May 14, 2009
I have not. I keep meaning to though. I’ll have to try and remember when I get home.
Smoltz's Beard - May 14, 2009
Put off everything in your life until you see this video. its worth it.
10-4 - May 14, 2009
The funny thing is that I went to college in the Bay and my roomie always used to watch the local news, I saw this mess live the first time!
mvandonsel - May 14, 2009
Ha
That’s bigger than me being at the game when Philip Wellman blew up in Chattanooga!
10-4 - May 14, 2009
NO WAY!! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN RIDICULOUS!!!
mvandonsel - May 15, 2009
i was at this game today
I swear I almost had a heart attack today…just a few thoughts
1) I hope this is the last time i see jo jo reyes in an atlanta brave uniform….i don’t normally want to bash guys but i think he’s 25 now and has plenty of opportunities the last few years….he just can’t seem to pull it all together and every inning today was nerveracking with him.
2) Glad to see Bobby went away from his usual loyalties and pinched hit for schafer with kelly johnson…schafer made an amazing catch early in the game, but there was no way he was getting a hit off putz in that situation.
3) Yunel still can’t run the bases…he should have been thrown out when he took second on wrights error…and shouldnt even ran in the first place with chipper batting behind him and taking the bat out of his hands…and he had 0 chance of making it on the church throw…i knew it automatically.
4) WHO CARES BECAUSE THE BRAVES WONNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bpk228480 - May 13, 2009
Great win for the Braves, but lets keep the amount of relievers used to a minimum
And I agree with those that think it’s time for Reyes to either be released or sent back down to the minors. Replace him with either Morton, Medlen, or Hanson.
I also think when Campillo is 100% and ready to return, that Carlyle should be the one to get the boot. If not him then Bennett because I have a good feeling about James Parr as a reliever (a lot better stuff than Buddy’s junk).
Then can I praise the bench for how well they have played so far. Nobody can say the Braves would be where they are right now without Infante, Prado, Ross, and Diaz. Norton has been a letdown so far, but who’s to say he won’t heat up later in the season?
And just poking fun, but what the hell is wrong with Soriano? Giving up a solo shot to a 40 something year old hitter, what a waste…..LOL
RaffyGonzo - May 13, 2009
I believe they would let Parr go down or Caryle before Bennett. Bobby has a man crush with Bennett and his 90+ MPH Sinker
drumzalicious - May 13, 2009
That would be fine with me, I just cannot stand Carlyle. Atleast Bennett has an effective pitcher to get hitters out.
RaffyGonzo - May 14, 2009
I think our best choice is to give Morton a chance. Last year him and Jojo had their shots. Jojo had his shot this year thus it’s Charlie’s turn. He was very good tonight, 7IP 2ER with a good BB/K ratio, and is 4-2 now with a 3.50era or so. If he pitches well, we have our 5th starter or a new mid-season trade candidate.
If he stinks it up after 3 or 4 starts, give Hanson or Medlen a shot. Both guys are only 23. They have 15 years of pitching left in them. Lets not rush them like we did Jordan Schafer.
Scott Coleman - May 14, 2009
Norton’s actually got 2 H and 3 BB in his last 10 PA.
Smoltz's Beard - May 14, 2009
Jojo
This kid’s struggling, it would probably be a good idea to send him down and see if some time would help. Either way though, it’s always good to win, especially if it’s against the Mets.
RichmondBraves - May 14, 2009
We dont want to see Hanson or Medlen this year. Lets hope Charlie can get it done. Also I am a fan of Campillo being #5 he did have a good 5th starter year last year. JoJo is gonna go somewhere else something is going to click and hes gonna be good is my opinion.
TomGarrett - May 14, 2009
Any time
We beat the Mets is like another little gift from Heaven. Made even sweeter after Wednesday’s disaster (I still cringe at Bennett walking in the WR) although thinking about how sweet a sweep would have been, oh well.
Gonzo made it interesting in the end but prevailed. GREAT road trip!
