I would expect editorialism and criticism from the AJC, but to see it come from the "Braves.com" MLB beat writer (who presumably kinda works for the team) is surprising. It is also impressive, since it is quite spot on. This is why I'm glad Mark Bowman finally got a blog:
While I'm confident that Schafer will prove effective while battling through inevitable strikeouts, I'm also pretty sure the Braves spent about $2.5 million too much on the left field manequin that Scott Boras sold them in February.
When you talk to Garret Anderson, he's as lifeless as he looks during those few occasions that he's actually deemed himself healthy enough to be on the field. He's a nice guy who has had a nice career.
But there were a number of better, more economically-sound options for the Braves, who would have been wise to just stick to their initial intention to give some of their own players a chance to prove they could play left field.
Braves manager Bobby Cox pushed for Anderson's signing and he has continued to show support for the 36-year-old outfielder. Cox has labeled him to be a "glider" who moves effortlessly toward balls in the outfield. In addition, he's believes the 36-year-old outfielder will be a key piece to this year's success.
Well Cox is entitled to his opinion and I'm entitled to believe the Braves will be putting Matt Diaz in left field much more frequently than Anderson.
Don't let Diaz's .217 batting average concern you. He's owns a .255 career batting average in April. During the season's other five months, he's combined to hit .322.
Well put sir. My favorite part was this:
When you talk to Garret Anderson, he's as lifeless as he looks during those few occasions that he's actually deemed himself healthy enough to be on the field.
As the people who are around the clubhouse the most, this is the kind of stuff D-Fab and Bowman should be bringing us -- kudos to Bowman for finally putting these opinions forward.
I've been trying my hardest to give Anderson the benefit of the doubt, but it's not all his fault -- as Bowman said above, Anderson is old, why should we be counting on him for the lion's share of playing time in left field, so part of this is the Braves' fault. We're wasting that spot on the roster and in the lineup on a guy who looks done. Now, Brandon Jones isn't exactly tearing up the International League, but I'm pretty certain he could be at least as good as Garret Anderson, with the added bonus of developing a young player.
We've talked about the loyalty that Cox (and the Braves organization) shows the players who play for him, but at some point even he has to realize when there's a dead fish on the pond.
It's only been ten games into the season, but the first, second, and third impressions of Garret Anderson have not been good ones. Hey, we cut and ran when Blaine Boyer, who had a great spring, couldn't come through in the three games he's been in, why not cut and run with Garret Anderson?

Gondee this post was perfect!!!!
Is there anyway we can cut him and get some money back? Seriously, is there anyway?

no, contracts are guaranteed. Garret’s contract is a stupid tax for frank wren and bobby cox.

i’ve actually been thinking the same thing,
i would not be one bit surprised if… when
we trade G. Anderson away very soon, this righty outfield bat we just got for Boyer is going to be used in the bigs this season, Matt on lefties this guy on righties
trade Anderson for some bullpen help?
bravesfan1047 - April 20, 2009
If they seriously think Brian Barton can outproduce Brandon Jones, they’re all fucking nuts and deserve to finish in 4th place
bigjoe - April 20, 2009
Your dedication to Brandon Jones is hilarious. He’s never done anything in the majors.

He’s gotten something like 300 at bats in the majors.

Same line of thinking as the Kotsay trade...
…. to afraid to not have a “legit” bat in the outfield.

more like too afraid to not have an “old” bat

What you're forgetting
Is that Bowman is an idiot. No, really, he’s not a particularly smart or insightful dude. Some guys are just reserved, but that doesn’t mean Anderson isn’t ‘trying’. The guy has a hurt calf – of course he’s going to look pretty bad. Maybe he should have been DL’d – but that’s not his fault. And he has hit a few doubles the past week…it’ll take him a little longer since he had such a short spring.
Anyway, I wouldn’t put any stock into what Bowman says. DOB says Garret’s a decent dude who’s just a little quiet. And DOB has way more credibility than Bowman.

Mark Bowman is not an idiot
I much prefer Bowman to DOB. I think it’s great that Bowman is giving us some of his actual opinion instead of feeding us the “he’s pressing, he’s sure to bounce back soon” BS that DOB and Bowman both tend to write sometimes.
More of this Bowman!

DOB vs. Bowman
You’re sort of echoing Mac, who doesn’t think too much of Bowman either, but I’ve spent plenty of time around both guys, and I’ll just go on record as preferring Bowman — he’s a serious class act, and a total professional. He’s also very smart and insightful. I’ve always thought he was constrained from writing more opinion pieces because he worked for MLB and the Braves.
gondeee - April 21, 2009
The difference being that this was a blog
I guess that gave him a little more freedom. But you have to admit that the majority of his stuff is needless fluff. I can go for that sometimes, but as Mac and others have noted, I’ve had enough of the Braves’ critics being silenced.
Hell, I did a google search for “Mark Bowman” “silencing his critics” and the first result was an article about JS Jr. silencing his critics. Truly. I guess that’s the kind of stuff he has to write. And while he might be a good guy, this blog entry was, well, I’ll just post in the new entry.

Haha, Anderson is a 'glider'
That made me chuckle.
bbxxj - April 20, 2009
That honestly was the crappiest excuse i have heard.
Personally if the dude is injured then sit him and put him on the DL so he can recover. It does the team no good to have someone constantly out of games who is supposed to be a key part of our offense.
I dont doubt that he will eventually come around and hit better because of the short spring training and such but i think if he showed a bit more passion a lot of fans would get off his back. He looks bored in the field and bored at the plate and it infuriates people.
I really hope Schafer can start turning things around so this team can have a spark cause right now the whole team is just stale. no kind of emotion or energy we just hit the first pitch into someones glove and jog down the line.
the only emotion seen is when a pitcher gets out of a jam other than that we are playing very stale lately
drumzalicious - April 21, 2009
I think we've got a new nickname for him
VictorW - April 21, 2009
Sure, Anderson’s a glider, in the sense that he’s powerless and eventually crash-lands.

I have nothing to add to this thread.
Smoltz's Beard - April 21, 2009
I don't care if he glides or scoots ...
…but the very least he could do is not look like he’s not bored out his mind and wants to be anywhere but on the field.
I can overlook mistakes if you’re hustling to the ball on every play (for a while). But if you’re not physically up to the task, don’t take the field. That’s beyond selfish, dishonest and not in the best interest of your team.
I think Diaz has earned that spot.
NCChopper - April 21, 2009
personally i could care less how he looks. i’m willing to accept that he’s an unemotional guy – we knew that when we signed him. the point is, his nagging injuries and lack of production at the plate are significantly adding to the growing team funk

FUGA was in Men’s Health this month for some Bullshit article on Scott Boras’s performance training place. Lets just say he has the same I don’t give a shit look in Mens Health as he does in Left Field.
