Atlanta Braves Minor League Recap: 4/15

Gwinnett 3, Durham 5 Final in 10 Inn.

  • G. Blanco 2-6 2B, K, SB(2)
  • B. Canizares 2-4 2B
  • D. Hernandez 2-5 2B, RBI, CS(2)
  • K. Medlen 5IP 1H 0R 1BB 6K

As good as Hanson has been in his first couple of starts Medlen has been even better. No runs allowed and only one hit through 8.2 innings. Canizares is hitting the ball well so far this season, but he was hot early last season and then faded as the season went on. Manny Acosta gave up a walk off two run homer in the 10th inning. Winner.

Mississippi 3, Huntsville4

  • G. Hernandez 2-4 2B, BB, K, SB(3)
  • M. Young 1-2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB(4)
  • K. Kaaihue 1-4 HR(2), BB
  • D. Heath 4IP 2H 0R 6BB 2K

That is the Deunte Heath we know! More BB than K baby. Dude seriously walks a lot of guys though. The story in this game for me is the Braves stole 6 bases and didn't get caught at all. Lucroy (catcher for Huntsville) is an offensive minded catcher but I have to wonder if the pitcher was walking the ball to the plate. And how do you have 12 baserunners and 6 steals and only score 3 runs. That is poor Mississippi.

Frederick 3, Myrtle Beach 2

  • J. Heyward 0-2 2BB, K
  • D. Linares 1-4 HR(2), K
  • B. Johnson 1-3 HR
  • J. Locke 4IP 2H 2R 5BB 6K

Not much offense out of Heyward, Freeman and Cody Johnson. The old Cuban guy went yard and the backup catcher Benji Johnson got ahold of one. Jeff Locke let the wheels fall of a little in the 2nd and then completely in the 3rd when he gave up a  double then walked three straight batter to score a run. He gave up a lead off homer to lead off the 4th. Stil had a nice amount of Ks and a 4:2 GB:FB ratio.

Savannah 3, Rome 5

  • L. Sumoza 2-4 K
  • S. Sime 3-3 BB
  • Z. Spruill 5IP 7H 3R 0BB 2K

Alright this stuff with Sime is getting ridiculous. He only has one XBH so far, but when you are hitting almost .500 I guess it doesn't matter much. Spruill hasn't issued any BBs in his 9 innings of work this season but he has given up 12 hits so far. His defense didn't help him much tonight committing 3 errors. They have been pretty bad for the most part this season on defense anyways. The pitching staff can't be happy about that.

I was at the Gwinnett game in Durham, I’ll have some pictures up sometime soon. Melden looked good, kept the hitters off balance. Acosta did fine in his first two innings, but he never should have gone out for a third. They put him in a bad situation and it cost them.

I was there too...

and was quite impressed with Medlen. The Bulls couldn’t touch him at all.

Were you hanging out outside after the game, tall kid in the fashion Braves hat with a girlfriend?

I was at Rome tonight. Zeke looked pretty good, got a lot of ground balls, but the defense was pretty atrocious. Thankfully, they strung some hits together anyways.

Pruneda was downright nasty, he came in with one out in the 8th and got a groundball on a nasty slider that broke the lefty’s bat, and turned into a double play ball, then struck out the side in the 9th for the save. I’m not really sure why he’s still in Rome. But I guess we’ve got a lot of good bullpen arms in Myrtle and he’s still real young. He looked better than some of the pitchers we have in the big team’s pen though.

Also, got to meet Braeden Schlehuberand David Francis, both seemed like really nice guys, and got a few cards autographed, as well as the ball I caught so that was enjoyable.

Good deal man. Francis is a heck of a nice guy.

He certainly seemed to be.

I wish I had had something better than my ticket for him to sign, but it was really just cool to be able to talk to him for a couple minutes.

If you’re gonna go to Rome a few times this year, I’d suggest picking up last year’s Danville team set. I counted 11 guys on the roster that are there right now.

I may look into that. I wasn’t able to get by the card shop before we left, because it was sort of a spur of the moment decision; I’m sure he would have had a couple more cards for me to take down there. I’ll probably try to go to a few more games down there when it warms up a bit; tonight was a bit too chilly for me. It’s not too bad of a drive and it should be a lot more fun when a couple of my friends and my brother are in town this summer.

Don’t mess with card shops, it takes too long and it’s too much of a crap shoot. Check out beckett.com and find a couple of dealers you like. You can go to STB on eBay to pick up the minor league team sets.

I definitely recommend going to some games and getting some autographs, it really increases the enjoyment of a game.

Canizares must be seriously terrible in the field

To be so low on the depth chart and never get talked about.

He really is pretty bad. He’s very stiff. It was funny today because he had to catch in the bullpen and everyone, players, fans, coaches, was making fun of how bad he was at it.

He’s a heck of a hitter though. If he had any pop he’d be in the majors.

He needs to hire Mark Sweeney's agent

that guy must be looking for work right about now…

Charlie Morton was named the International League Pitcher of the week for his win the other day where he struck out 12 in 6 innings.
