From D-Fab this afternoon:
Almost forgot to mention: Chipper and the Braves have made some progress toward a multi-year extension. He said a deal isn’t imminent, still work to be done, but he sounded encouraged by the talks they’ve had so far.
That's fantastic news. My hope is that they can hammer out a contract that would take him through the end of his playing days. Some sort of three-year deal with a couple of option years.
Chipper has always been pretty agreeagble come contract time. He even took the nearly unprecedented step of reworking his contract several years ago to help the Braves stay within their budget. With most players, as I would assume it is with Chipper, contract time is largely about respect (whether the word itself is actually uttered or not). Chipper seems to have a lower threshold than say, Smoltz, for believing that the team is respecting him with their contract offers.
It would be great to have at least one player from the great teams of the 90's and 00's to begin and end their career as a Brave.

Get it done, Frank.
And don’t screw around with this one.
FineHamAbounds - February 18, 2009
Yeah. I want this to get done before the season. If we suck come July, I might throw up if I hear rumors of ZOMG CHIPPER’S GONNA GO TO A CONTENDER
bigjoe - February 18, 2009
I’m not going to count on anything anymore. prays for Chipper to stay

I wonder whether D-Fab's club access will be limited at all ...
after this Griffey debacle (regardless of whether we sign him). I mean, if I were Frank Wren, I’d be less-than-thrilled about D-Fab breaking the story like he did.
I think they’ll get Chip’s done deal relatively quickly, you don’t want a pissed-off Larry Jones, Jr. on your hands.
FrankyWren - February 18, 2009
I’d guess that Chipper will want a 4 year deal, that would give him a decent shot at 500 HR and an outside shot at 3,000 hits.
Lennox - February 18, 2009
Thoughts on the price tag anyone?
I wouldn’t know where to start.
FrankyWren - February 18, 2009
11-14M base salaries, escalators galore?
jeg - February 18, 2009
Honestly?
Exact same deal he’s working on now.
bigjoe - February 18, 2009
I was actually thinking the same thing
Chipper basically gave up $10M over 3 years when he restructured his contract to fit in Hudson. Sure he turned options into guaranteed money, but they were pretty easy vesting options (450 PAs or All Star). Went from $47M over 3 years to $37M over 3 years (with an $8M – $11M vesting option, the one he’s on for 2009).
VictorW - February 18, 2009
Hells yeah
Get ’em Chip. Great news. And with Martini and Prado as back-up, that is kosher.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - February 18, 2009
Honestly, I’m not exactly worried that we could give Chipper too many guaranteed years. I’d be willing to bet Chipper would retire before he wasn’t good enough to play at a high level. I’m not saying give him a huge deal but I just think the length of the term isn’t a major concern. I would say a max of 6 years and I doubt we would play much longer than 4 more. If he will take vesting or team options, by all means we should but if he wants “respect”, I wouldn’t be too concerned with Chipper trying to play forever.
jeg - February 18, 2009
But here
Chief Noc-A-Homa - February 18, 2009
Haha. Whoops. But here's my thing....
I still think they should have a DH rule for everybody or nobody. The bitch of it is, Chipper could go on for several years longer as a DH, as everybody knows. But “not in the National League.”
That’s one of my biggest beefs with the game……..
(The other is that a manager should be aloud ONE “Challenge” a game on a shady call, where they should be allowed to view instant replay.)
Hey I can dream. But come on, some calls are bogus and should be reviewed.
Haha, anyways, GO CHIPPER!!!
Chief Noc-A-Homa - February 18, 2009
FUCK!!!! GRIFFEY PICKS MARINERS!!
SayHeyWerd - February 18, 2009
Good.
royhobbs - February 18, 2009
Excellent.
VictorW - February 18, 2009
I guess he has zero interest in winning. The Braves are no sure thing but we damn sure have a better chance than the Mariners.
jeg - February 18, 2009
It’s all about the Benjamins
mattdiaz4life - February 19, 2009
Run Chipper, Run
I think he should turn down the Wren-Wrecked Braves and sign elsewhere. Why not? The management in Atlanta has repeatedly proven themselves to be incompetent this offseason and Chipper deserves better, as do we.
stoph - February 18, 2009
Im guessing Frank will find a way to cock this one up, too. By this time next year chipper will be wearing a Mets uniform.
Enron - February 18, 2009
And so the Wren bashing begins
Rhyno18 - February 18, 2009
I know, srsly, wtf? He is trying to make sure Chipper retires a Brave…and people are still jumping his shit? Really?
mattdiaz4life - February 19, 2009
Fucking trolls – you win this time, trolls
mattdiaz4life - February 19, 2009
Man, fuck Frank Wren for not signing a 39 year old outfielder with bad knees and a middle infielder who’s had injury issues for the past few years. What a loser.
bigjoe - February 18, 2009
FUCK HIS FAMILY!!!
Damn it, wrong thread again :)
Rhyno18 - February 18, 2009
Of course
He probably shouldn’t have been attempting to sign either of them in the first place.
Lennox - February 18, 2009
Let's Boycott the Wren-Wrecked Braves until they fire his A$$
Why not? Hard working Braves fans are losing their jobs because of incompetent management. Let’s take out one the high-paid management bozos.
stoph - February 18, 2009
Have a neat summer.
royhobbs - February 18, 2009
I didn’t boycott the Braves in the 80’s, I ain’t gonna start now, sorry. I gotta have something to bitch about, and I luvs me some baseball.
Rhyno18 - February 18, 2009
you need to explain
how Wren is “incompetent”

mattdiaz4life - February 19, 2009
Glavine needs to retire
Why rejoin this joke of an outfit? He was better off in NY. Maybe he can reunite with Smoltzie in Beantown.
