Ken Griffey Jr: Here we go again

Ohhhh noooo. Hopefully this is just a glitch:

Free-agent outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., who is being hotly pursued by the Mariners and Braves, told MLB.com that he has not reached a decision on which team he will play for next season.

"We are still kicking things around with my family and have not made a decision," Griffey said from his Orlando, Fla., home. "This is the first time in my career that I have been a free agent, and it's nerve-wracking."

I can't take anymore of this kind of stuff this off-season. And it's not even the off-season, it's spring training now.

And then there's this report from SI's Jon Heyman:

Ken Griffey Jr. is telling friends he will choose the Braves over the Mariners, sources said.

Sometimes I yearn for the days when we had to wait until the paper came out the next day to know what the stories were.

[UPDATE: 2-17-09 @ 4:45pm]

From D-Fab we have some reassuring words:

I would suggest that Griffey and his agent had told the Mariners they would talk to them this afternoon before making any decision, and that they plan to do that before announcing any decision.

We’re not going to get an announcement from the Braves today, I can pretty much assure you.

It's not a Braves free agent signing this year without at least a short moment of panic.

This is a godsend for you guys.

Even though Griffey himself said he hasn’t decided, two independent sources have said he’s chosen the Braves. I’m going to believe that, I think Griffey is just giving the “Nothings official” line in the rare chance of the Mariners or another team swooping in with an offer he can’t refuse.

Folks, I can understand why the Furcal situation has you concerned about Griffey, but all I can tell you is, you need not be concerned. Dude is going to be a Brave. Just saying what he needs to say right now because they probably felt bad about Mariners hearing the news second-hand instead of directly from Griffey and his agent.

I had the same reaction

You’re right gondeee, here we go again.

I've always supported DOB ...

But if this doesn’t happen, he’ll lose a lot of credibility IMO. It’s one thing to break news when you know it’s a sure thing, it’s something else entirely when you break news to bolster your reputation.

DOB

Is down at Spring Training talking with everyone in org. I think he’s going to be right on this one. You don’t just throw this out unless you know its dead on balls right.

Also anyone think that all of the A-Roid hoopla is causing a little bit of a delay?

I know

He’s at spring training, but I doubt he’s talking w/ everyone in the org, especially given the “close to the chest” mentality FW and his minions have adopted this offseason.

I hope you and DOB are right. But … I feel like DOB is someone who might get a little antsy in his pantsy at the prospect of breaking the Griffey signing.

you've got to be KIDding me

ha! zing!

you’re better than that

I thought it was perfectly cheezy
It's done....Griffey deal to be announced Wednesday

It’s at the AJC site here, and what lets me know it’s the gospel is that the article is co-authored by Dave O’Brien and Terrence ‘Ken Griffey will save the Braves and I’ve been beating this drum since the 90s’ Moore.

I think it’s a good signing for the Braves, I just hate it that ol’ Terry is getting what he’s dreamed of all these years.
