I believe I predicted this a month or so ago, much to my chagrin:
Chip Caray received an early Christmas present on Monday morning, when Fox Sports Net hired him to serve as their play-by-play announcer for all the Braves games televised by Fox Sports South and SportSouth.
This was the role previously held by Jon "Boog" Sciambi, who accepted a full-time role with ESPN at the conclusion of this past season.
Later this morning, Fox Sports Net is supposed to officially announce this hiring of Caray, whose role as TBS' lead baseball announcer was terminated on Nov. 30. That decision ended his association with Turner Sports, which handles all of the Braves games broadcast on Peachtree Television.
This arrangement will allow Caray to once again call a majority of the televised Braves games. During the past two seasons, he saw his workload with the Braves limited by the travel requirements that came with TBS' national baseball package.
Caray's decent, but cheesy, and not the comedy genius that Boog was. Oh well, at least it's not Bob Rathbun.

There’s always mute with the radio on I suppose.

Oh boy!
Another year of overdramatic calls!
BigG1392 - December 21, 2009
OH BOY!!!
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
I hardly listen to tv announcers anyhow.
Baseball has decent people and give some nice stats. I don’t have a problem with Chip Carrey.
And at least it isn’t a basketball announcer….
Sparhawk - December 21, 2009
Jesus H. Christ
Maybe I’ll buy MLBTV instead of MLBXtra Innings so I can choose which broadcast I want to listen to.
“HERE’S A DEEP FLY BALL! RIPPED TO CENTERFIELD! OH MAN HE CRUSHED IT! …….And Nate McLouth makes a play on the lazy fly ball in Center.”
Fantastic.
Scott Coleman - December 21, 2009
I miss Boog already.
paulyicecubes - December 21, 2009
Id rather have a Caray in the booth
call me sentimental.

"fisted"
hehehehehehe
Scott Coleman - December 21, 2009
At least it's not Joe Morgan.. I love his quality announcing.
EyePod - December 21, 2009
i don’t mind chip at all, really
Bravely going forward - December 21, 2009
Thank God for radio, this guy is the worst announcer in the history of announcing. Worst move they could have possibly made. I bet dead silence would get better ratings. How can they hire someone who has proven repeatedly throughout the years that he knows absolutely nothing about baseball. Poor Joe, that’s who I feel for. Judging by the games on PeachtreeTV last year, this upcoming year will be hell for him. This is the most idiotic hiring of any type in the history of baseball.
samxrm - December 21, 2009
Tell us how you really feel.
Bravely going forward - December 21, 2009
Oh Boy...
I knew it was going to happen, but boy oh boy is Caray bad. His talents don’t account for his lack thereof.
IDChop - December 21, 2009
*His Dad’s Talents. Sorry. I type like he calls games apparently.
IDChop - December 21, 2009
I'm glad he's coming back.
I enjoy his play calling and his relationship that he has with Joe Simpson.
And right on with the Rathbun comment.
Fischerking - December 21, 2009
I will look back on the Joe and Boo era with much nostalgia
This is going to impact my level of enjoyment this season. I’m with the game on mute crowd

Marry me.
bigjoe - December 21, 2009
Does anyone else
Think that Boog is a condescending a-hole? Glad that Chip is back in the booth.
Fatvirus - December 21, 2009
not I
VivaLosBravos - December 21, 2009
No
I think Boog is hilarious, a good announcer, and brought up some sabermetric angles during the broadcast
eaheckman10 - December 21, 2009
Boog may be funny...
…but calling him hillarious after being able to hear the wit of Skip for so many years just seems wrong.
cavebird - December 21, 2009
amen
Fatvirus - December 21, 2009
i liked boog a lot
he had moments when he would go a little out there, but I loved his work for the most part.
And compared to the other broadcasters in the NL East (the Phillies and Muts announcers are convinced their teams never do any wrong, the Marlins announcer screams more than Chip does, and Rob Dibble is a dumbass) he’s really, really good.
Scott Coleman - December 21, 2009
No.
He’s funny, smart, and on top of his job.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
Boog needs another line other than "Outta Here!!!" for homers....
I like Chip.
Chip and Joe should work out pretty good.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - December 21, 2009
Now I see why they invented the mute button
nick9314 - December 21, 2009
I can’t wait to hear all about the cubs this year and how the city of chicago is heaven on earth.
Anybody know who Boog will be partnered with and what games he’ll broadcast?
Chesterhighwater - December 21, 2009 via mobile
no clue
but he was doing the Memphis/UMass basketball game the other day. It seemed weird to hear him not calling a Braves game.
Scott Coleman - December 21, 2009
I saw that while flipping through the channels. I actually backed up to ESPN to make sure. It was so surreal to see Boog on a wooden court instead of a press box high above a green, grassy field.
TheLetter2 - December 21, 2009
He's been doing basketball for several seasons.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
He's mostly doing other sports. I don't think baseball is his main assignment.
Probably mid-major basketball games on the Deuce or outside of prime time.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
Um,...
if I recall correctly, he was signed to be the primary man for baseball on ESPN radio.
Mr. Sanchez - December 21, 2009
We were both sorta right.
Splitting his time between baseball and basketball on TV and radio.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
It is. But you don’t exactly see many baseball games going on now, do you?
bigjoe - December 21, 2009
I meant generally.
I don’t know why they wouldn’t have worked him on baseball when he wasn’t doing Turner, unless there was an exclusivity agreement.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
I don't mind it
Sure Chip makes a lot of mistakes but Im alright with it out of respect for his father. Joe Simpson is good enough to carry the broadcasts and I couldn’t imagine someone rather listening to the away announcers. I’d rather shoot myself in the face than listen to opposing announcers talk up their teams when the Bravos struggle.
WNWDOTCOM - December 21, 2009 via mobile
What bugs me most
isn’t the dramatic pop-outs or the randomly irrelevant side-stories, it’s the forced fake-laugh.
Bronn - December 21, 2009
….He seems to laugh easy. I wouldn’t really characterize it as a “fake laugh.”
Chief Noc-A-Homa - December 21, 2009
Worst move of the offseason
I’m a little surprised there’s any support for Chip around here. His complete lack of baseball knowledge and game awareness is incredible, and that doesn’t include the times he’s just dead wrong. I’m convinced he doesn’t understand the meaning of any of the adjectives he uses either. He should have gone to the Cubs. He seemed to always like them more anyways even when he used to be the Braves announcer. I’ll definitely be listening to a lot of games on the radio next year.
ajones2522 - December 21, 2009
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Slee - December 21, 2009
Boog vs. Chip
Boog is just fine as a national announcer. He tried too hard to be a homer as Braves announcer. I like him much better when he’s not doing the butt-kissing. I wish him well.
As for Chip, well, I can’t stand Chip, but as long as his contract includes a requirement for him to call at least half of the games while doing an impression of Skip’s voice, I’m cool with him as a Braves announcer.
Thrashy Thrashy - December 21, 2009
He does do a fantastic impersonation of his father’s voice. Good call.
gondeee - December 21, 2009
As long as that idiot Sciambi is still gone this can only be good news. Nobody cares if you look like a cartoon character, it’s a baseball game.
cbwilk - December 21, 2009
this
Bravely going forward - December 21, 2009
...because that was probably his idea, not the producers'.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
Sure, If that’s the case on that one fine. Doesn’t make up for the other nine million idiotic things he talked about that had nothing to do with the game.
cbwilk - December 21, 2009
Because there are 180 minutes of interesting game material to talk about every night.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
lmao
I’m surprised Syndrome got no shoutouts in ’09.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - December 21, 2009
There really are. Baseball is a fascinating game. Here we are around the end of December and we constantly find things to talk about.
cbwilk - December 21, 2009
Are you really singing that song when we're up or down eight in the seventh?
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
That’s my favorite song, so yeah.
cbwilk - December 21, 2009
for you, sure...
for most of us, the game is slow and needs filler.
Mr. Sanchez - December 22, 2009
Great. Why not get Jeff Foxworthy then?
cbwilk - December 22, 2009
It'd probably boost ratings...
face it cb, they aren’t selling to you because you’ll watch regardless. People like us will watch if they hired Tim McCarver and Thom Brennamen to do the games. Caray, and Boog, help bring in “casual” fans I’d guess, and that’s the market they are catering to, not the diehards like us who aren’t changing the channel if they let a cat scratching a chalkboard provide the commentary.
Mr. Sanchez - December 22, 2009
Frankly, I don’t think there are casual fans of baseball. When I talk to people I either hear “I love baseball” or “Baseball is boring, I don’t like it”. At best I hear the occasional, “I like going to a game, but I’d never watch it on TV.” I really think if baseball, and all sports for that matter, focused on having top notch game-calling rather than stupid human pet tricks to get people to watch something they’re not inclined to watch in the first place, they’d be better off. People aren’t watching sports they’re not interested in, no matter how good a standup routine the play by play guy has.
cbwilk - December 22, 2009
I love how Boog would take the trivia question so seriously
bigjoe - December 21, 2009
Now the question is, who will do games on Peachtree…please no Fred Hickman. That would be fatal.
bigjoe - December 21, 2009
God, he's awful.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
THAT IDEAR, ALONE, IS EPIC FAIL. EPIC.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - December 21, 2009
He says “you know” so much, he could run circles around Obama.
Chief Noc-A-Homa - December 21, 2009
you know you suck weiner at broadcasting
when freakin ESPN fires you.
Scott Coleman - December 21, 2009
He wasn’t even really a broadcaster at ESPN…as far as I recall, he was just chilling on Sportscenter. Which takes a lot to get fired from.
bigjoe - December 21, 2009
I remember one night I turned the TV on
And Stuart Scott and Hickman were the 2 anchors for the 10pm show. It kinda ruined my night.
Scott Coleman - December 21, 2009
It seemed Boog and Joe got along better to me. Secretly I believe Joe hates Chip. After the post game wrap up how often did the Lemmer and Chip go have a round?
Chesterhighwater - December 21, 2009 via mobile
I had the feeling that Joe kept his distance from Chip as well.
Gage23 - December 21, 2009
OK, Chip is no Skip. There are a lot worse options than Chip: Ron Gant, Brian Jordan, Fred Hickman, Tim McCarver, Joe Morgan and Mark Lemke come to mind. Face it, we were spoiled by having Skip, Pete and Ernie Johnson for so many years. Maybe a couple of months just doing Braves baseball will straighten him out. I’m willing to give him a chance. You have to figure that if he gets worse the Braves and Fox SportSouth will be looking to replace him.
John Holton - December 21, 2009
Why would you figure that?
Nobody in the world would have thought to hire him at all.
MichaelProcton - December 21, 2009
LINE DRIVE, BASE HIT!….Caught out there….
FeartheChop - December 21, 2009
As long as the Braves are having a winning season, I can deal with Chip.......
Getting the right players on the field is more important to me during this off season, than worrying about who is calling the games. That said, Chip is overly dramatic at times, but I’ll take that over “know it all”, “done it all” Joe Morgan any day!
HEYJUDE - December 22, 2009
And why the hate for the Hair?...
Rathbun is a basketball guy, but why the hate for the best hair in the business? I like Chip better for baseball, but the Rathbun has his good side (basically basketball and hair).
Mr. Sanchez - December 22, 2009
Hi, so what’s wrong with Chip Caray? I have no beef with him but obviously some of you do. Maybe because I haven’t heard many games that he’s called. He seems to work well with Joe Simpson (who I thought was great with Boog).
ATLforlife - December 27, 2009
Here's What's Wrong with Chip
Chip’s work has been decimated by the media critics and baseball fans alike. This is the NYTimes essay on Chip’s miscues that many credit with getting him fired:

For an equally savage New York take on his work, try this:
