There are some interesting tidbits floating around the internet today concerning the Braves, mostly coming out of Dave O'Brien and Mark Bowman.
Dave O'Brien speculates on who Atlanta might be interested in this off season. They are the usual suspects such as Josh Willingham, Carl Crawford, Mark Derosa, Mike Cameron and Jermaine Dye. One note that came through via MLB Trade Rumors is that Jermaine Dye would be open to playing first base. I think his bat could be a good fit with Atlanta if we don't resign Adam Laroche, and especially if he isn't the defensive liability at 1B that he is in the OF (which we honestly don't know if he would do well there). The problem would still be the same as with Laroche, however: how would we pay him?
Mark Bowman also weighs in on the closer situation, Adam Laroche, Adrian Gonzalez and Jordan Schafer's future with Atlanta via his weekly mailbag. I am a bit surprised to see him say that the Braves might trade Schafer in the offseason and I had fallen in love with the idea of a Heyward/Schafer/McLouth OF over the next 3 years, but if we are offered the right package I would be willing to move him. I hope they ask me.

Anything more specific about the Crawford rumors?
I know it’s all speculation with a capital “S” but Carl wearing the tomahawk at the top of the lineup makes me salivate just a bit.
The Keith Lockhart Era - November 23, 2009
nothing really other than we are interested in him.
yondaime4 - November 23, 2009
+1
It would be great to see the top 3 of next year’s lineup to look like this:
1. Crawford
2. Escobar
3. McCann

that might work too.
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
I am not so sure I like that top of the lineup.
Crawford has great speed and his baserunning is a plus since he has a 82% success rate. However, he has a lifetime OBP of .335 and that isn’t too pretty. He is a plus left fielder, so that is something, but he wouldn’t push McLouth to left. Personally, I prefer just signing Cameron instead—-Cameron is an equivalent hitter (slightly better going by OPS+ history) and he is a plus centerfielder, improving our defense more than Crawford would by pushing McLouth to left. Plus, he wouldn’t cost any prospects in trade or our first round draft pick. And his salary would be lower.
cavebird - November 23, 2009
Word
Nailed that one on the head.
get swoll yunel - November 23, 2009
whats wrong with an outfield of crawford, mclouth, heyward..thats a fast and good defensive outfield all the way around…
Hcgadawgs - November 24, 2009
very left handed
would be perhaps the one flaw
cirela20 - November 24, 2009
and cameron is better defensively than anyone you mentioned
Swo12bv - November 24, 2009
And...
…Cameron will cost less money and players in trade.
cavebird - November 24, 2009
and crawford is a young player in his prime….cameron is not….
cameron doesn’t have too much more pop than crawford and crawford hits for a higher average, steals more bases, etc..
Hcgadawgs - November 25, 2009
Crawford or Cameron? There's almost no way...
… and it’s because of money: Cameron just made $10mill. He won’t get it again, but he’s not gonna want a cut in half, either, since he’s a lifetime .250 hitter and 36 years old(!). Crawford – who’s signed through 2010 – may be available, but made $8.25 mill in Tampa and would command multiple high-value prospects in return. So he’s a double-negative.
carpengui - November 24, 2009
What makes you so sure? Cameron’s been worth well over $10M in 3 of the last 4 years. $24M/2 is possible, and he might even get more than that. People around these parts are severely underestimating the market value of Mike Cameron.
Yakker - November 24, 2009
Because of the market...
The only way Cameron gets more than $10m this time ‘round is if they’re a bidding war for his services from teams like NY (either one) and Boston… and they’re bidding for Holliday and Bay. I know he’s a Quality Man – the kind that the Braves tend to go after – but face it: Wren is trying to unload contracts of that size, not add them. So yeah, I might go after a Mike Cameron at the $5-9m level, but (a) if I’m wrong and he gets over ten, then it won’t be in Atlanta; and (b) I just don’t see the pursuit of a 36 y.o. .250 hitter who just finished getting $10 mill.
I expect that Wren will wait for the Heyward era to begin (June, ugh) and see about a bopper that plays infield. The closer we get to March, the more pitching needs will demand that somebody trades for Lowe or Vaz — then we name our price. (By then we’ll all be up in arms wondering why nothing has happened yet!)
[My best-case scenario is Roy Halliday gets traded and the BJays then ask for Lowe for Aaron Hill… stop that laughing… come’on now…stop it….].
carpengui - November 24, 2009
I agree
I would love to see Carl Crawford in a Brave Uni……That would be a key cog that we are missing..It would give us some speed on the basepaths and he hits for decent power..If the Bravos can get some more power to go with him, then it will be fun!!!!
Sabanholic - November 23, 2009
We would actually have legit basestealers for the first time since Furcal left!
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
Crawford has never been a leadoff hitter...
much more often in the 2 or 3 hole, and I don’t like the idea of him/McLouth at the top of the order personally. Considering Tampa’s cash constraints though, I think sending back McLouth would be critical in a trade for Crawford (although I’d prefer BJ Upton because of a) right handed hitter b) younger c) less expensive in salary and trade package).
Mr. Sanchez - November 24, 2009
PLEASE SIGN ADAM LAROCHE!! GET SERIOUS ABOUT NEXT SEASON. BOBBY’S LAST YEAR AND MAYBE EVEN CHIPPER’S TOO. EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO SIGN HIM TO A 3 YEAR DEAL DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOU CAN’T TRADE HIM AFTER 1.

I was hoping that this last year was his last but maybe the team rallies around him this season…Bobby has been great for Atlanta but he has passed his prime…Anyway, i hope they when a championship for him going out!!
Sabanholic - November 23, 2009
Its an interesting idea
Dye has played five games at first in his career, with one in the majors (2005). No errors, with a UZR/150 of 12.9. Not that a size so small matters. I would probably rather have Laroche, because he will probably hit the same if not better than Dye, and he always plays great D.
esadb - November 23, 2009
He mentions trading Minor. In one of the other threads we talked about how you can’t trade a player until a year after he signs. What I didn’t recall at the time was that if you have a Player To Be Named Later in the trade he has to go to the new team by the end of 6 months. What this means is that someone like Minor, or most of this season’s top draft picks, couldn’t even be part of a trade until February.
This should in no way be taken to mean that I think we should trade Minor, just as a clarification of the rules for these kind of things.
cbwilk - November 23, 2009
we better not trade Minor
hell, we already paid him a huge signing bonus and drafted him earlier than anyone thought we should because of “signability”. might as well hold onto him.
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
Agreed
The Keith Lockhart Era - November 24, 2009
hmm
Not really feeling the idea of trading Schafer.
drumzalicious - November 23, 2009
I second that emotion.
My feeling is we don’t know exactly how much upside he really has, but chances are he will be an impact player.
fandave - November 23, 2009
thirded
Wren may be feeling pressure to get back to the playoffs, but the FO needs to be patient and let Shafer get back to being a damn good baseball player and then in 2011 they could have a very nice core of young controllable players, that could carry this team for a number of years.
JFP - November 23, 2009
Fourthed
We’d be selling low. He’s a great athlete and an incredible fielder. If only he can figure out how to hit a FB…
nick9314 - November 24, 2009
I'd pee my pants if we got Crawford
but it would have to be part of a trade-and-extend deal. It makes no sense to get him for just one season. However, If we could get Crawford and then sign Glaus or Dye to man 1B for a season or two, I’d be ecstatic.
Crawford
Diaz
Chipper
Dye
BMac
Escobar
McLouth
Prado
That’s an incredibly well balanced lineup (L/R/S/R/L/R/L/R) and it lets us keep The Jay Hey Kid in the minors until June.
Sorry for the rosterbation. I’ve been pretty good the past few days. Don’t chop my manhood off. I know it’s a touchy subject on here!
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
I would rather see Prado batting #2 than Diaz.
SmithnCompany - November 23, 2009
That’s crazy talk.
justincredubil02 - November 23, 2009
Prado > KJ
:)
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
Prado may well be better, but...
…don’t undervalue KJ. He had two pretty good seasons in 2007 and 2008. I am not sure about the defensive comparison. Per fangraphs, Prado is average and KJ is poor. Per the metric on baseball reference, Prado is average and KJ is pretty good. I have no clue what that means.
cavebird - November 23, 2009
That defensive metrics are inherently flawed.
cbwilk - November 23, 2009
Bingo.
get swoll yunel - November 23, 2009
I think you’re reading it wrong, UZR/150 rates KJ (-0.2) as a better defender than Prado (-3.6) at 2B last season.

Don’t feed the trolls…

justincredubil02 - November 24, 2009
Again why I don't like all the advanced stats...
in the right hands they are good and very useful when used in context with other advanced stats. But in the hands of a fool like me (or many others), that little amount of information can just be dangerous.

Mr. Sanchez - November 24, 2009
not that. I am talking about mvhsbball just trying to bait me into a KJ vs Prado debate…again.

I was just thinking of players at positions the Braves need. We don’t really need a SS or a 3B, but we could always upgrade.

bravesguy311 - November 24, 2009
Alright,
that right there is an interesting trade, and actually might hold water as legit rosterbation. My question is why would you make the trade- what are the pros and cons? Tell me that and I’ll weigh in
GoBravesNY - November 23, 2009
Two one year rentals for the best prospect in baseball?

But they could very well put us in the world series in 2010.

We would be losing a franchise building block that could very well help put us in quite a few world series. I’ll definitely pass.

GoBravesNY - November 23, 2009
HAHA. YESS.
I’m taking a screen shot of this. I will bring it back when Heyward is on top of the world.
nick9314 - November 24, 2009
bravesguy311 - November 24, 2009
correct
but he’s one hell of a prospect and you don’t give away six years of control over this type of impact player for two guys who A) don’t fit into the teams limited budget and 2) aren’t signed for very long. Its not good baseball economics and anyone who would make that trade should be for fired immediately and be banished from baseball for a mandatory psych eval.
JFP - November 23, 2009
I am not that sure about that....
…they could be enough to get us in the play-offs. Carlos Pena racked up a 130 OPS+ last year, LaRoche had a 123. That’s an upgrade, but not that big of an upgrade. Carl Crawford had a 113 OPS+ last year and a 103 OPS+ for his career. True, he would be a huge upgrade over Garrett Anderson, but we can get that anywhere. Wouldn’t it be better to sign Cameron and LaRoche/Delgado/etc. for approximately the same salary and get the same benefit without giving away the best prospect in baseball?
cavebird - November 23, 2009
maybe we should just stop talking about trading Jason Heyward
cause theres no way in hell the Bravos would trade him.
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
No. Fucking. Way
nick9314 - November 24, 2009
Hmmm...
So here we are again at the start of another week and Mark Bowman again weighs in on his guesses of whom the Braves are interested in. For me it is always interesting that these so called major league sources are mostly wrong.
Now with that being said I must admit that I am curious about J. Dye but not that excited. However resigning LaRoche would be nice but also not likely. We should be trying to trade Lowe for a couple of prospects and then put together a package deal and get A. Gonzo in ATL.
Who knows what will happen but I just hope that J. Dye is not what we meant by acquiring a RHH impact bat, LOL.
Nelson Cruz rumor is floating around again and the Braves are listed as first on the list for his services so who know whom we are going to get but these rumors are getting a-little crazy and we are not yet even at the winter meetings.
Go Braves.
Holty_Panthers_Fan - November 23, 2009
Bowman has done nothing but shoot down rumors all offseason long…so, I am not exactly sure where you are coming from here.
justincredubil02 - November 23, 2009
Adam LaRoche
GouldisGold - November 23, 2009
is related to Andy LaRoche?
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
I got autographs from Adam, Andy, and their dad Dave this year in ST. That was pretty neat. Adam’s the coolest.
cbwilk - November 23, 2009
Man, i wish i lived closer to the Braves spring training. Maybe one year we could do a swap where you get to check out the AFL and I get to check out ST lol
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
I’d love to go to AZ for Spring Training. I’ve heard from pretty much every serious autograph collector who’s done it that it’s better than Florida. Much easier, you get two teams sharing complexes which makes for more opportunities in a day. One of these days, when I’m super rich, I’m spending the second half of February and all of March going between AZ and FL.
cbwilk - November 23, 2009
its nice
there’s only 2 teams down in Tucson (i believe), but the Phoenix area is loaded with teams.
Scott Coleman - November 24, 2009
of course! they’re brothers- ESPN’s favorite group of siblings in baseball behind the Molinas. Ravech would always go apeshit whenever Andy (3B) would make an above average play that required him to throw to 1st when they were both in PIT

bravesguy311 - November 25, 2009
The most overrated athlete in sports is definitely Derek Jeter.
justincredubil02 - November 25, 2009
Most important thing from that mailbag
The fact that Bowman seems to think that the Braves will offer arbitration to BOTH Soriano and Gonzalez. Always thought Gonzo was 100%. But it now seems like Soriano will be getting an offer as well. I would offer it to Laroche too. But I bet they pass on that and just offer to Soriano and Gonzo.
NEBravesFan33 - November 23, 2009
They’ll have to offer to arbitration to all players if they want to get any picks if those players sign somewhere else.
jack dein - November 23, 2009
and
the odds of Soriano or Gonzo accepting is what…10%? Soriano is one of the best relievers on the market and Gonzo didn’t hire Bora$ to accept arbitration. I could see Roachy accepting arb. so he hits the market next year when the economy is better, but I still think the odds are 25% or less.
Scott Coleman - November 23, 2009
I agree
When it comes down to it, these players and their agents have one week to decide on accepting the offer or not. That’s a risk you have to take with all three players.
NEBravesFan33 - November 23, 2009
None of them will accept it but when they go somewhere else we will get 6 picks for them. I doubt LaRoche accepts because the Mets need a 1B and probably don’t have the money to sign Holliday. LaRoche is probably the 3rd best bat in this free agent class.
jack dein - November 23, 2009
yep
and it probably means that the Braves will draft 5 or 6 local high school guys who are signability picks
JFP - November 23, 2009
That's why I want this for the off-season...
…it is boring and unsexy, but it works. Trade Lowe for a B-level prospect or two. Sign Cameron and a cheap first base guy with risk but power upside (Delgado, Glaus, Dye??). Then sign some live arms who aren’t proven closers for the pen. Let Soriano, Gonzo, and LaRoche walk—-with arbitration offers giving us five extra 1-2 round picks (LaRoche is only Class B so we just get one for him and I doubt we get first rounders for Soriano or Gonzo—-a team with a protected pick or a high Class A signing will probably sign them). With our payroll 5 million or so lower than last year, we can draft the best position players (maybe a couple of pitchers) with the picks and have the money to sign them. That lets us restock the farm system, have some financial flexibility for 2011 (the nice thing about draft picks is that it is bonus then nothing) and still be a better team than last year.
cavebird - November 23, 2009
Everyone keeps assuming that if Gonzalez and Soriano are signed they’re going to teams where we wouldn’t get their first round picks because of some other free agent signing by that team. I’m wondering, who are the guys these teams are signing? I could see the Yankees signing Lackey, and that would keep their pick away from the Braves, but who are the BoSox going after? They’re probably gonna be looking at Bay before Holliday.
cbwilk - November 23, 2009
we get 2 picks either way
if say, the Royals sign one, their pick is protected.
BUT we get their 2nd round and a Compensatory Round pick (between 1 and 2) as well. We could, actually, have 5 picks in the first 60. That, my friends, is what you call a haul.
and next year’s draft is MUCH deeper and we should have more money to sign kids above slot.
apoxonbothyourhouses - November 24, 2009
6 picks, actually.
apoxonbothyourhouses - November 24, 2009
This. Exactly why worrying about not getting the other team’s first rounder isn’t that big of a deal. You’re still getting a ton of draft picks.
cbwilk - November 24, 2009
Actually, it is only five picks
LaRoche is Class B and only nets one pick.
cavebird - November 24, 2009
i think we have a pick so that would be 6
Swo12bv - November 24, 2009
We have a first and a second, actually,
so it would be seven. Which is why I assumed that he was not counting our original picks.
cavebird - November 24, 2009
The reason is simple and is why the Braves shouldn't sign Wagner
It is because, while they are good, they aren’t worth signing at top dollar and costing a team a first round pick. That’s why I assume that we won’t get a first round pick for them. Also, look at the teams—-15 teams have a protected pick. Of the remaining teams, one is the Braves—-obviously if we sign one or both of them, compensation picks are not an issue. That leaves 14 teams. Let’s take a look at them:
Yankees: Could sign one as a set-up man, but will likely sign a higher free agent.
Red Sox: Same as the Yankees—-could sign one as a set-up man, but will likely sign a higher free agent. (And, honestly, with their bullpen why would they bother at all?)
Tampa: This might be one possibility for a first rounder. Their bullpen is a mess and they aren’t huge spenders so a higher Class A signing isn’t likely.
Twins: Not being huge spenders and having Nathan, they won’t be looking at Gonzo/Soriano.
Tigers: They are more likely to shed payroll than sign a closer, but with Rodney bolting this is a possibility.
Angels: They have Fuentes but could still sign one. Still, they are already linked to Bay and have three guys leaving, and could easily sign a higher Class A free agent.
Texas: I don’t see them looking at Gonzo/Soriano with Francisco and Wilson already there and budget problems abounding.
Seattle: Another possible but not likely source of a first round pick. They could use a closer, but have limited money that will be needed elsewhere.
Phillies: They will likely stay with Lidge, but it is possible.
Marlins: Florida giving away a first rounder to sign a free agent. Yeah, right.
Cardinals: With Franklin in the fold and a claring hole left by Holliday, I doubt they spend on a closer.
Dodgers: Set at closer already.
Rockies: Street should be back and they don’t have much money to spend.
Giants: They are set at closer and need to spend on hitting, not pitching.
And that’s it. Basically the reason people are assuming that we won’t get a first-rounder for Gonzo or Soriano is that we probably won’t. Still, as someone else noted, a second rounder and a sandwich pick ain’t bad either.
cavebird - November 24, 2009
Are we certain Boston offers arb to Wagner?...
considering arb rules, I think that would be something he could easily accept, and probably make more in one season from arb than he could over multiple through free agency.
Mr. Sanchez - November 24, 2009
with papelbon (sp?), saito and others in that BP, I don’t think they will.
justincredubil02 - November 24, 2009
saito signed a one year deal last year i thought …am i incorrect?
Swo12bv - November 24, 2009
Not sure, but I would think that they would offer him arb before they would BW…just because he would be cheaper.
I could be way off though.
justincredubil02 - November 24, 2009
has an option for a second,...
but it ain’t cheap and they have several other options so it’s a question of what they wanna do.
Mr. Sanchez - November 26, 2009
If they don't...
…I have no problem with Wagner, assuming the price is right. I still don’t like overpaying for the proven closer tag, but Wagner has done enough in his career to earn it.
cavebird - November 24, 2009
i really don’t think they will offer arb, they are not gonna spend 8-9M on a guy to pitch the 7th inning, they arent the Yankees (they spend money but usually intelligently)
Swo12bv - November 24, 2009
even if the market is better, theres not way he is in a better spot than he is this year, with a couple teams looking for a 1B and he is the best one… that means he’ll get overpaid (most liekly)
Swo12bv - November 24, 2009
i know
NEBravesFan33 - November 23, 2009
I think they will definitely offer arbitration to LaRoche.
We would be happy having LaRoche on a one-year contract. Offering him arbitration is a no-brainer. The tricky part is Gonzo and Soriano—-we wouldn’t mind one accepting, but both would be one too many. If we are fairly certain both won’t accept, we just might do it.
cavebird - November 23, 2009
LaRoche is not cheap
He made $7,050,000 last year. Career highs in runs, hits, walks; 2nd in dbles, homers, games…. pretty much the consistent numbers that got him that $7 mill. Therefore, he’s at least $7 mill to keep — if he loses the arb case. That’s tough to swallow — even though we like the dude. He’s 30 years old now – this should be his ‘money’ contract time.
carpengui - November 24, 2009
The Braves have signed reliever Juan Abreu.
…according to Mark Bowman. Abreu, a 24-year-old career minor leaguer, spent the past four years in the Royals organization. He struggled with his control last year, erasing some of the optimism he created in 2008. He will be added to the 40 man roster.
Just thought I’d share that with you all.
GouldisGold - November 24, 2009
Who gets dropped off the 40-man?

Nobody...
They currently have 39 players on the 40 man roster.

David O’Brien speculates on his most recent blog that the Braves may be interested in the role-model kind of effect Cameron could possibly have on Jason Heyward. What do ya’ll think?
Bravely going forward - November 24, 2009
Cameron is not a role model. Parents should be role models.

Cameron was a role model (or whatever word you want to ascribe to his duty) to Prince and Braun and Weeks in MLW
i agree Athtetes arnt role models to fans or people, but it does help to have veterans on you team guide younger players (provided their sole purpose isnt guiding the youth…. they have to be able to produce and Mike can do that)

I have no problem with signing Cameron, role model or not. I was just throwing out an old Barkley-ism.

That is contradictory...
…as Cameron has three kids. On top of that, he has written a motivational book for children with all profits going to his foundation to benefit inner city kids. All in all, a pretty good guy. I think the idea is a major league baseball mentor here to Heyward—-from everything I read Heyward is very with it and has very with it parents and it isn’t like Cameron would be filling a void.

Jeebus guys. Way to miss an effing joke.

Don’t joke in the offseason. It’s only going to get lost in the rosturbatory glory.

At this point
I want Mike Cameron over any other possible FA OF or guy we could deal for…unless it was a Ryan Braun type player.
