Game 162 Recap: Nationals 2, Braves 1 in 15 innings

A season that most people just wanted to end goes out with a game that just wouldn't end. The announcers were having a good time of talking about the fact that they had run out of things to talk about, and the fans only stayed around because there was a post-game concert scheduled.

Things got so lean in the position player department that Martin Prado played right field for the first time in his career. That actually might be the highlight of the game. As they have done for the last week they just didn't do much hitting, and when they did have runners on base, they just didn't do much hitting. The only run was a Nate McLouth solo homerun in the 6th inning. McLouth almost won the game in the 13th with a shot that took the center fielder to the back of the warning track... there was a big sigh from the announcers, Joe and Boog, who were hoping that would have gone out.

It seems weird to talk about how well a starting pitcher did... wait, no it doesn't, that's par for the course for this team. Tim Hudson finished strong, pitching 7 innings allowing only one run and striking out 7. The bullpen also put in some great work, pitching 7 more innings without allowing a run. Boone Logan did in the 15th what Manny Acosta tried to do in the 14th, and that was end the game. The Braves almost came back in the bottom of the ninth, but you know, it's the Braves.

Time for the cold veil to set in...

To fire up the hot stove:

LOVE this countdown calendar.

Gondeee

thanks for all your hard work this season, my man. You do great work with all the writeups, previews, recaps, etc. This is the best Braves blog on the web and you do a great job running it.

Agreed. Always one of my first stops when I get online. The go-to Braves website around, as far as I’m concerned.

cudos

this was my first year posting on this site, I even tried my hands a couple times on OT. This is by far one of the best blogs going. Educated baseball fans. It is the first one I go to. Fine operation.

Those umps were ready to go home. It looked like Connie totally checked that swing to me. Oh well…

same here.

with people on, in that situation, you can’t call that.

I must say it was a real shame for the team to wind out the season on such a run-less and generally listless losing streak.

Regardless, however, it was one helluva an 82 or 84 game run that almost got us into the playoffs and should have the players and management very fired up and looking forward towards a championship run next year.

Thanks talkingchop and all talkingchoppers.

My favorite quote.

+182 (as in the # of days until Opening Day, 2010.)

Opening day??

Im pumped for the Winter Meetings in a month!

It’s been tremendous fun talking with you guys this year. I got only one game this year, but I hope 2010 brings more. Until then, champagne wishes and postseason dreams.

wow. that is not the kind of weekend I wanted to come back to. Oh well. get ’em next year

A microcosm of our season.

Well, I’ll see ya’ll in the winter!

It ended the way it should for the braves

One of the best pitching staffs in baseball. Sad to see just how pathetic this braves offense was this year. Would like to see a new hitting coach. Pendelton does nothing for these guys. Would like to see Greg Norton maybe sign to a 10 year deal. What a weapon off the bench him and Kelly Johnson. This team has alot of holes offensively. Great job by the starters this year. To bad they pitch in front of some of the worse hitters i’ve ever seen. Chipper time to retire.

You do realize that

chipper was still like our 3rd best hitter, right? Even with his off-year. You want to make our bad offense worse by him retiring?

i didnt word that well

but hopefully its readable

yeah, especially with no heir apparent to Chip. Makes a lot of sense, huh?

it hurts to lose 6 games in a row to end the season but I’m actually kind of glad we lost once we were mathematically eliminated (obviously not the FLA losses or the 1st WAS loss) because it gives us the 19th pick in the draft i believe instead of something like the 22nd. Hopefully we can find another Jason Heyward

i guess thats good news. i havent heard anything about this years draft in regards to depth, college vs HS talent, the strengths and weaknesses, etc.

anyone know? or is it still too early?

like was said below it’s mainly college righties in the projected first round but iirc there’s a GA kid who’s supposed to end up at 3B who many think will go around mid first, seems like there could be a fit. It’s honestly too early to start throwing out names and discussing the draft but I’ll take the 19th slot over 22-23 in exchange for losing a few meaningless games

a young, local 3B?? Sounds perfect for us!

well i was off by a little, he’s a SS/P at this point: Kaleb Cowart. But he’s probably going to move to third if he doesn’t pitch down the line

Deandre Smelter as well, ...

among others locally.

Just like the young, local RF that worked out so well! :P

speaking of young, local OFs

I finally saw a picture of Donovan Tate today…I had absolutely no clue he was white lol

Are you kidding?...

he’s not.

well there’s two, remember heyward is local as well. And McCann’s worked out damn well also as a local, braves do very well picking GA kids

Yeah. Still, they don’t always get them to produce (Francoeur) or keep them (Wainwright ).

Although there is this kid who catches...
College pitchers i think.

mainly righties.

I always reply fail.
This season went by SO fast

It feels like opening night was just yesterday. Just think…back then, we thought DLowe was actually a good pitcher.

and that Jeff might have a good year.

BTW, how bog does that 3rd game seem now? Especially when we were within 2 games a week ago.

After that game, I sat on the couch and shook my head for a good 10 or 15 minutes.

Bog?

I looked it up and could not figure out what that could possible mean.

*possibly.
Yeah...

A bit tough to poke fun at someone’s typo when you’re having problems with word selection. :P

I was here today at the game

it just kept going, and going and going and going
i was hoping to get home in time to see some football, oh well
it sure was a sorry game for the Braves tho, the offense was… well down right pathetic
hopefully these past few days are sending a huge red flag to the front office to get us some better offense
anyway it was a good year for us, until this past week that is…

NAHWAL update

I just finished scoring August. I will do some scoring tomorrow. I can’t say when I’ll have the yearly done, but next Tuesday should be a good day to circle for a yearly winner.

Tim Hudson will be back healthy next year at least thats some great news!! O wait we have no offense we are going to only score one run against the worst teams in baseball!! Very frustrating season to say the least. It seams every time we would get close we would get knocked way back, but I look forward to what’s coming next and Heyward starting next year!!

I'm a little confused...
A season that most people just wanted to end goes out with a game that just wouldn’t end.

Who wanted the season to end? That makes it sound like it was so terrible we couldn’t wait for it to be over. It always makes me sort of sad for the season to end…

Yes, but many were so sad about the way things had gone...

They didn’t feel like suffering through more losses against one of the worst in baseball.

It was a fitting end for this season, great pitching wasted due to an inept offense. All against a team with a horrible record that we should have been able to beat.

Why so sentimental?

I’m pissed off because Bobby finally managed a game the way it should be. If he’d done that all year we would be looking to face the accursed Dodgers not crying in our beer about how we shoulda-coulda-woulda done!!! F%^k Bobby Cox and Terry Pendleton!!!!!!!!! It pisses me the Hell off that we didn’t do better with the talent we have on this team. Well the Braves ended over .500 so I guess that’s something. But to end the season losing 6 in a row is pathetic. Bobby’s coming back next year and everybody’s happy,,,,,, F*%k that!! I’m not!!! Unless this team gets some awesome players, next year will be a copy of this year. At the very least, get rid of Terry Pendleton! He can’t coach the talent on this team to win. I’m PISSED%&^^#$%$##%$&^%*&^$^#^$&%&%&$&$%$^%$^%cker

Pendleton has been on this staff through MANY successful years. He clearly has it in him to do everything he needs to do.
Maybe I should be a Yankees fan, that's how they act while buying tickets

NONONONONONONONO

A week or so ago i posed the question “How weird would it be to finish second in the division and the wild card”?

Nevermind. Ask the Marlins.

I really wished the Braves had won this game. I had to explain to my grandson why the Braves sucked this year.I blamed it on managment and I think it was true. I’m pretty sure I won’t buy season tix for next year. The Braves front office doesn’t care about the fans, other than how much they can screw us out of. I’ve paid my last $12.00 parking fee for disabled parking. If you saw an old guy with a 7 year old kid, walking with a cane, that was me. I thought in April the Braves were a hot team and I bought season tix. Well I was wrong again. The front office should really consider us, you know the fans whoo can’t afford those $200 tix. I’m about ready to give up on the Braves, their management sucks and they don’t give a fuck about their lower income fans.

Just kidding?....

Right?

i really really hope so.

This series was embarrassing. Getting swept four in a row to the worst team in the league with the team we have is absolutely shameful.
