As reported by Ken Rosenthal and Mark Bowman, the Atlanta Braves are closing in on a three-year contract extension with starting pitcher Tim Hudson.
A source familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday night that Tim Hudson could be just a few days away from agreeing from the three-year contract extension that the Braves have offered.
"It's getting pretty close," said this source, who added that there are just a few "small details" that need to be ironed out.
Those were the quotes from Bowman's source, and here is the quote from Rosenthal's source:
"It will be a shocker if something doesn't get finished in the next three or four days," one source said.
Here we go again... I thought this off-season would be a bit more tight-lipped for the Braves, after the embarrassing early announcements of failed deals last year, but even before the end of the World Series we're getting leaks from someone involved in these talks. Now, it could be coming from the agent, but wouldn't the Braves also ask the agent to keep things under wraps as well as instructing all of their people to so as well. Who knows if these are two different sources, they are two different sets of quotes, so we could assume that there are not one, but multiple leaks coming out of these negotiations. I love rumors as much as the next person, but come on Braves front office, spare us the embarrassment of another off-season like the ones we underwent last year.
Oh, and I'm pretty excited that Hudson will be coming back. Our pitching staff is going to be stacked... again, but let's not forget the other parts of our team which has holes that need plugging.
Let's also note the side story here, which is Ken Rosenthal's spotty record on "insider" information. Just two weeks ago, he reported that barring some huge offer, Hudson was sure to be a free agent. He had "major league sources" telling him so.

If we can get Huddy for 9MM a year, I think that’s a good contract for us. It also finishes up when Huddy is 37, so we’ll probably have him until he starts to slow down a bit.

I personally think that there’s already a deal in place to trade Lowe after the WS is over. Where is anyone’s guess if it’s for Carlos Lee i’d be very happy. Huddy can give us what Lowe gave us last season plus and he’d cost 6 mil less per.

All I can say is that is this a typical Braves move not that it is a bad one don’t get me wrong I am just always worried about signing guys especially pitchers to longer deals than a yr or two and decent money after Tommy John Surgery. I am now excited that Lowe is going to be traded but to who and yes it has taken me a few months to warm up to the idea but we need to free up his cash. Carlos Lee ? Hmm just doesn’t seem to be the type of player the Braves acquire and neither does that Cruz kid from the Rangers. Don’t get me wrong I would be grateful to get Lee however I am just wondering if we could get A. Gonzo from the Padres or Prince Fielder from the Brewers (of course getting Fielder would cost us Vasquez and not Lowe b/c Brewers have been scouting Vasquez for a while now). Only problem with that is Fielder only has one more yr or two or arb eligbility and after that we will never be able to keep him.
I guess Lee is our best bet and he what 33 and still in his prime. Man could you imagine this lineup ?

Of course what will all know it that this rumor has to become official and we are all so way off by listening to the so – called experts and rumor sites that we are usually way off on whom the Braves are trying to get ? So who knows I just want us to put together a team that can go deep into the postseason next season.

it would probably take some kinda top 20 prospect but damn it would be worth it…that lineup would be DANGEROUS

I still think...
dump Lowe for the best offer we can get, either a slugger at 1B like Paul Knoerko maybe, a couple young position prospects, or whatever. Then, hopefully get Javy extended for a similar hometown discount thanks to his age, his long desire to pitch in Atlanta, and desire to avoid the west coast. After that, start looking for Minor to eventually replace KK in the rotation, and the glutton of A ball/rookie league guys (Teheran, Delgado, Spruill, Devall, Oberholtzer, etc) to eventually replace Huddy and Javy.

I don’t like it at first glance. Vasquez pitched a lot better than Hudson and doesn’t have questions about the health of his arm. He would have been a better choice to give an extension. That’s $9 million less the Braves would now have to sign a first baseman or other power bat and one or two high end relievers. Wren could have waited on re-signing Hudson until after he got all the other work done. If this means that Lowe gets traded though, then I could learn to love it.

TJ surgery has a pretty solid track record of recovery. 2009 was Huddy’s rehab, and he should be back pitching just fine next season.
