Braves Third Baseman Chipper Jones talks with Forbes.com

The financial magazine Forbes has an interview up online with Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones. Why Forbes is interviewing a baseball player I do no know, but here is possibly the best answer to a question like this I've ever heard:

[Forbes:]  Near the end of the season, you mentioned that you were considering retirement after next season. Now that that the season is over, do you still feel the same?

[Chipper Jones:]  I was really frustrated with how the middle part of the season went for me. I have such high standards for myself and I will never settle for being a mediocre player. I will work extremely hard to make sure that doesn't happen again this year.

I think we will see a Chipper Jones on a mission next season. I know he can get there mentally, let's hope his body cooperates with him. The rest of the interview is here.

Sweet interview.

Rec’d.

rec'd?

A front page story rec’d? Lol

I liked it. I know it doesnt really do anything

But I wanted to show that I loved the interview.

I gotcha man. Yeah, it was definately a good artice

I love Chipper but...

his body isn’t going to hold up for an entire season. Let’s say he plays 120 games next year. Who will play the other 40 or more? I think the team needs to have a plan of what to do if Chipper can’t play most of the year.

Really?

He played more games than anyone on the team this past year. More than he should have, probably. I do think they should probably give him a regular day off every 8 – 10 games.

So you're saying...

that the Braves should do anything about addressing the need for a replacement for an aging player who has a history in recent years of not being able to make it the year without missing games? Not the best move IMO.

No...

I don’t think that’s what I said. I’m just making the point that his body did in fact hold up for an entire season this year. Of course they need someone to back him up, and they have a couple of them. In fact, I think Prado’s best position is third.

Ok. I understand your point.

Prado might be a useful replacement. I haven’t really thought of him taking 3rd for long periods or as a temp/mid-term holdover if Chipper gets hurt/career ends.

We did just fine

With Prado and Infante spelling Chipper at 3B this past season. There are a couple of guys out there that if we could get them at a reasonable price would b a fit. One is Garrett Atkins and the other is Joe Crede.

i woulf like crede…he would be great with our groundball inducing staff

There’s no reason that Chipper can’t have a much better season next year than he did this year. Having said that, he’s an older player and the Braves need to be thinking toward his replacement. While it’s unlikely that he’ll retire after next season, he needs more time off. This is the time for the Braves to see if Prado or Infante is the next starting 3B, if someone in the minors is ready to come up and step in, or if they need to be looking outside the organization. I don’t want to have him retire and the Braves not know who’s going to play third.
