The Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones talked with The Sporting News about several hot-button off-season topics.
Chipper on the Mets and Phillies:
We won for 14 consecutive years, and you never, ever saw any bulletin board material. And now that these two teams are on top of the division, they can't keep their mouths shut. Just go play baseball. It's Cole Hamels now. It was Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Beltran the past couple of springs. These two teams are constantly going at each other verbally. You know, win with class, lose with class. Just keep your mouth shut and go play your game.
Chipper on the Braves failuire to acquire Jake Peavy:
If Jake wanted to play in Atlanta, Jake would be in Atlanta. Jake is in control of this whole thing. There was a deal in place, and Jake didn't want to play here. So Jake's not playing here. [...]
Certainly, a month ago when Padres G.M. Kevin Towers was fielding offers from four, five, six teams, the best offer on the table was ours. [...]
I don't know why we were on his wish list, but that's baseball. That's one of the rights that he has with his no-trade clause. I would be hard-pressed to think San Diego is ever going to give out another no-trade clause. This is a prime example why the Atlanta Braves have a strict no-trade-clause policy. They're not going to give any player who comes through here a no-trade clause. I don't care if it's Hank Aaron. I don't care if it's Mickey Mantle.
You've got to wonder how accurate his statements about a "deal in place" and Peavy being the one to turn it down are, but if they're anywhere close to accurate, that's a very interesting development to basically see a player controlling negotiations so closely.
And finally, he has some interesting words about the Braves and money:
Ten or 15 years ago, we could lure people to Atlanta strictly on reputation. You knew we were going to win, and we had a bunch of good players. Players would shun money from New York and take less to come here. For the past three seasons, we've kind of been on the downslide and not making the playoffs, so you can't do that anymore. We can't compete monetarily, so the only way we're going to get players in here to play and win is to force them--and that's done by trading.
The downside to trading is that it weakens your minor league system. But the only way that we are going to win now is through trades. We just don't have enough money to compete with the New York, Los Angeles and Chicago teams.
Always good stuff from Chipper, and he seemed to be in one of his really candid moods when answering those questions. I would have liked to have seen them ask him a question about his impending free agency next year.

I could see Chipper in the Front Office one day, as dedicated as he is to honing his craft he would be great at evaluating talent. Of course he would make a great hitting coach, or manager for that matter. I hope he stays with the organization long after he stops playing.

Agreed.
Smoltz's Beard - January 2, 2009
I've never said this about a Brave
But in the case of Chipper, either we make a huge move in the next couple of years for a playoff/WS run or I hope he gets the chance to go somewhere and try to win another ring. If anything, it would add to his HOF credentials.
Bobby Cocks - January 3, 2009
Chip secured his place in the HOF this past year.

i dont understand what is going on here, explanation please… where did u get the HOF standards?
Swo12bv - January 3, 2009
baseball reference. they’re on each player’s page…check it out sometime. formula is kinda convoluted though, so i’ll let you read it for yourself
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
Oh I agree that he’s a definite hall of famer, but prob not first ballot. And another ring doesn’t hurt his overall standing of where he ranks all time amongst third basemen.
Bobby Cocks - January 3, 2009
You can definitely tell the frustration in Chipper’s words. He’s my favorite Brave, and it sucks to see him running out of years to win. I want to go give him a hug, be his friend, maybe take him to a movie, maybe dinner. I miss his musk. I’m a mess without him. I think when his career is over, ne and I should get an apartment together.
Maybe i should sit the next couple plays out.
10-4 - January 2, 2009
that wasn’t at all creepy. nope, not at all
bigjoe - January 2, 2009
u have to appreciate the anchorman quote come on
Swo12bv - January 2, 2009
i don’t like any will ferrell movies that have come after old school, sorry
bigjoe - January 2, 2009
thats basically like saying you like penises in or around your mouth
SayHeyWerd - January 2, 2009
do you like dane cook too?
bigjoe - January 2, 2009
yeah…
whats he have to do with will ferrell
SayHeyWerd - January 2, 2009
he’s considered “funny”. at least ferrell has been funny in his career…sure it was more than 5 years ago, but thats more than cook
bigjoe - January 2, 2009
well a lot of people think both are funny..
SayHeyWerd - January 2, 2009
A lot of people are stupid. That Step-Brothers movie was pretty cool and the douche in that movie had to get home so he could Dane Cook on Pay-Per-View.
Euruproktos - January 3, 2009
what does that even mean
SayHeyWerd - January 3, 2009
Too much High Life and Jameson’s leads to tortured syntax.
Euruproktos - January 4, 2009
I tried to watch a Dane Cook special one time, to see what all the fuss was about. I had to change the channel after about 5 minutes.
10-4 - January 3, 2009
Man, Anchorman was an instant classic….one of the most quotable of all-time. I named my fantasy football team after it (A Whale’s Vagina), and I owe much of my team’s success to Mr. Ferrell and the city of San Diego.
coldriver10 - January 2, 2009
San Diego is unavailable to provide any assistance in the playing of baseball
Euruproktos - January 3, 2009
Really? I loved anchorman and hated Old School. But to each his own, I guess.
soup du jour - January 2, 2009
Will Ferrell = OVERRATED!!!
mvandonsel - January 2, 2009
whoa ill admit lately his stuff has been less than impressive… but he has been in some very funy movies. Albeit he’s funniest when around other funny people… Old School, Anchorman, talladega nights… he is surrounded by peopl who are very funny.
Swo12bv - January 2, 2009
Less than impressive? Did you see Step Brothers?????
jjcollins - January 3, 2009
how about ELF?
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
Santa's coming! I know him!
FrankyWren - January 3, 2009
elf was sick.
dude…your gay, your probably watching Home Alone 3 right now
SayHeyWerd - January 3, 2009
waitwhat
i like movies that have plots, like anything by tarantino.
or things that are actually funny, like anything like kevin smith.
you like movies involving will ferrell dressed like something that children believe it. do the math.
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
no i like movies with Will Ferrell period. He’ll make any movie funny, no matter if its about Elfs. Kevin Smith, lol. not even close to Will.
SayHeyWerd - January 3, 2009
I used to love Kevin Smith, but did you see Clerks 2? Meh. And how about Zach and Miri? What a dud.
cbwilk - January 3, 2009
clerks 2 was just alright…i really am not buying into the whole seth rogan thing, so i skipped zack & miri.
but lord…clerks, mallrats, dogma, J&SBSB…just 4 absolutely epic movies
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
big fan of J&SBSB, and dogma, must confess i havent seen clerks or mallrats from beginning to end, always seem to catch it in the middle or w/e… they are pretty good from what ive seen.
Swo12bv - January 3, 2009
clerks is a mustsee for anyone who has ever worked in retail.
mallrats is pretty much a must see for anyone who’s ever been in high school.
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
Chasing Amy was good too.
mvandonsel - January 3, 2009
heartbreaking. and fantastic
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
You’re just a tracer…
Smoltz's Beard - January 4, 2009
HAHAHAHA
mvandonsel - January 4, 2009
Totally agree, epic stuff. They’re each great in their own way, but I just love Chasing Amy the best.
And I’m down with Seth Rogen, but mostly cause everyone thinks I sound just like him.
cbwilk - January 4, 2009
speaking of movies with a plot… just watche godfather 2 last night (again) can we officially say the godfather movies are the best movies ever?
Swo12bv - January 3, 2009
they’re up there. on my list of MOVIES THAT DONT SUCK (IE shit i’ve rated 4.5 or 5 on facebook’s movies app)
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
i have yet to see it however i have heard it was quite funny… but Semi-Pro was horrible
Swo12bv - January 3, 2009
step brothers
was hilarious.
justincredubil02 - January 3, 2009
Your awesome
jjcollins - January 4, 2009
Honestly.
I thought Step Brothers was one of the worst movies that I have ever seen!
mvandonsel - January 3, 2009
Your an idiot
jjcollins - January 4, 2009
ummmmm ok?
mvandonsel - January 4, 2009
Superbad > Step Brothers + Infinity.
mvandonsel - January 4, 2009
you’re actually the idiot, since you don’t know how to use possessives properly.
bigjoe - January 4, 2009
And you don’t know how to use capitalization properly.
jjcollins - January 4, 2009
its not that i don’t know how to, its that i opt not to.
bigjoe - January 4, 2009
Well maybe I just opt to use your instead of “you’re”
jjcollins - January 4, 2009
but thats not really something that is considered appropriate in any setting… Your and you’re are completely different words… whereas capitilazation does not change the meaning of most words, so its considered acceptable especially on the internet
Swo12bv - January 5, 2009
+1
Great movie.
Smoltz's Beard - January 2, 2009
This post needs more cowbell.
Lizziebeth - January 3, 2009
Nice!
A couple of years ago they had a promotion in Rome where they gave fans a certain section a little cowbell. Randomly during the game they’d play the SNL clip on the video board, and when Walken said he needed more cowbell, the fans would oblige. I laughed every time….
secondbass - January 3, 2009
should be ‘fans in a certain section….’
secondbass - January 3, 2009
that would have gotten really old after like, the 6th time
bigjoe - January 3, 2009
i gotta say being a residnet of tampa and going to the Rays games…. it licks balls having all those bastards bangin the damn cowbells… the only saving grace is dollar hot dogs every thursday
Swo12bv - January 3, 2009
Dollar Hotdogs in Oakland every WEDNESDAY!
mvandonsel - January 4, 2009
dollar hotdogs in philly ONCE A MONTH
bigjoe - January 4, 2009
$5 hot dogs in ATL EVERY GAME!
10-4 - January 4, 2009
$11 hot dog and chips in the chophouse! mind boggling
at least the dog was tasty
bigjoe - January 4, 2009
Couldn’t resist throwing the line in there, but, yeah…I gotta agree that would get old quick. Plus wear out the novelty of the SNL clip! Cowbells do NOT belong in baseball. Or near me at any other sporting event. Except maybe golf. That would be kind of amusing for a few minutes.
Lizziebeth - January 4, 2009
big fan of the golf clap… its great to use it in situations that don’t require a golf clap… like the middle of a lecture
Swo12bv - January 5, 2009
i’m more of a fan of the slow clap, personally
